💜 ABOUT ME:
Hi and welcome! I'm Tanya and the only thing I like more than learning languages is probably talking about learning languages (well, that and hoarding language books).
My native language is Russian and I'm currently in different stages of learning English, Spanish, Polish, Italian, Korean, and Japanese.

It’s a constant struggle to work, study languages, and still keep up with other hobbies and still have time for family and self care all without burning out… it is reassuring to know I’m not alone! My other hobbies are travel, video games, and learning the piano. I definitely am able to incorporate languages into gaming because many games are available to play in multiple languages and often you can have English subtitles while listening to dialogue in a different language. Or any 2 languages for that matter (laddering!) Or subs and dialogue in the same language for immersion. More and more games have more options for native speakers of many languages and language learners alike and it’s great - gaming is definitely the form of language exposure I find the most fun!

Languages as a coping mechanism is 100% true for me lol. I do tend to focus solely on one hobby at a time, I’d really like to incorporate more as well. Gotta take some of those online classes I’ve saved 😆

Also I think Domestika (which is sort of like Skillshare but only Art focused and always running huge discounts) has courses in more languages (Spanish, Italian and Polish, for example), but there doesn't seem to be a way to search by language, but only changing the website's language will automatically give you the classes in those languages (subs are still available in all the other languages regardless). Many of my Art friends have done a few - I have some bookmarked myself - and they seem quite nice!

I did something similar for Spanish a while back. I was getting back to pencil sketching and watercolor painting, and found a few Spanish-speaking KZreadrs about these topics! I was still a beginner in Spanish then, but I was able to follow along because the video served as a visual guide. Recently, I've taken a few online courses (in Spanish) on creativity and topics related to my field and soft skills for professional growth. Another thing I do is play video games and watch baking vids in Spanish. Finally, I decided to be more serious with my Stoicism studies, and I've found a few Spanish channels about the topic and been reading about it in Spanish. It's definitely a balancing act, but I'm so glad you've realized these things and started to figure out your rhythm. Best of luck to you!

I’m also studying Spanish, and I’m interested in drawing and stoicism. Could you perhaps recommend some Spanish KZreadrs you followed?

@@Soloespanol-yc8iu Sure! For drawing, I loved "Really useful how to draw and paint tutorials" (the channel name is such a mouthful). For Stoicism (and other philosophy topics), my favorite is "Notas del aprendiz." When I was more upper beginner to low intermediate, I could still follow along because he speaks really slowly and clearly.

This video is very interesting! I'm always curious about what other hobbies polyglots have. I'm very similar to you in that I want to learn how to draw. Drawing is creative, and it's the perfect hobby to explore your imagination. I also want to learn how to paint in watercolor and gouache as well. I just love art! I signed up for Korean classes, and they begin next month. I can't wait till I can get to the level where I can watch drawing and painting tutorials in Korean! I think you are absolutely amazing for being able to take drawing lessons in Spanish! Exploring your other hobbies through the languages you've learnt is such a wonderful idea. Thank you for making this video.

While our lives are very different, I always feel that your videos resonate with what's going on in my life. I have decided to stick to the 3 languages I have been learning this year and not to take up new languages. And also trying to find ways to start to immerse myself purposefully with the areas of life in mind where I would need/like to use the languages. And also that there are other things in life too. Thanks for validating unintentionally my processes too!

I'm not really experienced language learner, but managed to learn English to such an extent that now I'm able to consume almost any kind of content from short yt videos through podcasts to books, and when I realized that in fact I hadn't put much effort in learning this language (of course I don't mean that English somehow appeared in my mind out of nowhere, but it took me relatively little time to make big progress, although my writing and speaking skills are still really poor, but that's a matter in which I have quite similar approach to yours, definitely I don't prioritise output abilities, which of course doesn't mean I don't care about them.) okay, coming back, since I knew that learning a foreign language to satisfactorilng level might not be as hard as it could seems I decided to give Spanish a shot. When it comes to my hobbies, I was always kind of guy who enjoys learning new things, so language learning fits perfectly, in the past it used to be programming (so in fact also learning a languages, but a little bit different ones) but abandoned it over time, other things that interests me are literature, dreams, religion studies and philosophy, so stuffs that require tons of reading, and here it's almost impossible to not connect English with them, as there are so many books that cover those topics, which aren't available in my mother tongue, I also naturally connect English with music but that's rather obvious if like it. I think that connecting Spanish might be rather harder, but reading fiction books in different languages it's always fascinating, because you can see how the same thing is shown in a different way, so that's definitely what I'll do when I'll achieve a level of Spanish that would allow me to do so. Of course I'll also gain access to some content, that is only accesible in this language so that certainly also will be a potential use, but as you said, in English it's always kind of natural thing, while in other languages it would be rather searching for something to watch/read/listen than searching for some particular content. Sorry for being wordy, intended to write just a short comment, but somehow it turned out to what we can see. By the way, it was a really nice video and I'm looking forward to see what you'll tell about learning with this partner

I really enjoyed watching this video, because I feel myself in the same way, I started to learn German a long time ago, but now I want to begin with other language. I was thinking about Catalan or Russian, but I know that... if I do that, I will fall apart and eventually collapse. For now, I just want to master my German Skills at certain point where I'm able to consume content at least with subtitles (Point that I haven't reached yet). I don't want to overwhelm myself, I barely have the time to not neglect my English, to practice German and to deal with my life (University and hobbies), good video :)

Okay, I've finally watched your video. Not gonna lie, I was low-key afraid when I saw the title 😅 Language learning is my only hobby. I'm afraid that if I had other hobbies, I'd take them too seriously (so I can't have many). Whenever I've tried to learn something else, like the piano, I approached it with extreme seriousness, diving into the topic as if I was preparing to write a PhD thesis on it. I would burn out in just a week or so. So, language learning it is. Funny how it started: when I was 16, I told my parents that I didn't have any hobbies. They said "but you're good at English." I was like: "Is learning languages a valid hobby?" Then, I came across Alexander Arguelles and the rest is history.

Yeah, I can definitely see the benefits of both being a specialist or a generalist. The problem (at least for me) is deciding which one I actually want to be and not feeling like the grass is always greener on the other side 😅

Late to this but, I'm really hyped you're taking on a new hobby!! :D Absolutely agree with the message, it's important to just live with your languages rather than constantly being in the process of learning. Personally, the languages I spend focused time studying are often the ones where there's lots of content I specifically want to consume in them afterwards. So once I get past the intermediate/beginner stage I usually just have a romp of a time reading/watching.

So che fai questi video più per te che per noi che li guardiamo probabilmente, ma voglio comunque ringraziarti perché sono sempre molto relatable, at least for me! I set a goal for myself in 2023 not to start a new language and just focus on Korean, and even though I’m very tempted to just randomly start learning the thai alphabet or something like that, I gotta say that sticking to Korean has been kinda helpful since it is the language I mostly enjoy content in. I also would like to be able to look up stuff about my other interests in korean as well as my other previous/future target languages, hopefully one day I’ll reach that point. Grazie per essere un’ispirazione e per condividere con noi i tuoi progressi e le tue riflessioni

When you said you hate topics like numbers and telling time, I was like, yikes, I forgot how tedious studying can be on the beginner's lever. That is, if you don't live in a foreign country and can't use what you've learned right away. I tried studying Korean, Italian, Welsh but it was a bit frustrating - having to learn all these basic stuff and not being able to do anything *interesting* in a target language - so every time I just gave up and went back to English and Mandarin (the languages I can actually use for reading/watching/speaking)... I do want to go back to Welsh and Italian, though. Some day. Some day in the future. -_- I'm a native Russian speaker too, and I'm currently 29 as well :) I find many things you say very relatable!
