The Narwhal is absolutely worth it. It comes with a reactor that you can't buy yourself until your 50's and starship design 4. All this available to purchase at level 1.

I replaced the stock weapons with 4 PB-380 Neutron beams all on one firing button, and the Atlatl 280c missile launcher on the second, obliterated the Ecliptic Battleship with relative ease (still had to get behind it out of it firing arc as it melts you fast if you don't). As other have mentioned the auto turrets seem hit or miss, they don't seem to even work in some battles, so I scrapped them and went to manual fire.

I'm at level 140 and a my non-modified Narwhal wipes the floor if level 70 starborn, spacers, crimson, and ecliptic. I'm at the point I get three to four enemy ships at the least when I do encounter them and I haven't lost yet. I have a damage control tech, a missle tech, a laser tech, Vasco for shields, Andreaja and me. I have a "Can't upgrade the Narwhal glitch" so I'm just going with it stock, no mods. Also it keeps picking up people, miners, scientists that won't leave the ship, but I don't know if that is a ship glitch or game glitch. Playing on Xbox X.

Narwhal is definitely worth it. I bought it, and shortly after, tested its combat capabilities in the space above Neon. This thing mowed down around 15 or 20 level 5 to level 38 ships without losing its armor or grav drive. It's so strong. And this thing also is good for hauling. Slap some cargo modules on, and it's great for cargo runs.

Hmm I defo love the design and you get pretty much all the desired modules, such as a comfy captins quarters with some living areas. Only thing I would change is removing the med bay because I feel like it's kinda a pointless waste of space except role-playing or design I guess but not too bothered myself. I would switch the science lab to be underneath the crafting room and add an extra computer station or storage in place of the med bay. But quite a nice ship. Not sure about the price mainly cos I'm like level 25 and still on A class ships and not too far into the story so I don't know how much credits I would have and be getting when I'm in C class ships. Either way thanks for the detailed video and thoughts

Credits are definitely easier to come by later on so you should have no problem affording this ship. It is a solid ship if you don't have any Starship Design. If you do have some skill points invested in Starship then you might be better off upgrading a stolen ship or a free ship you get in the game.

Aside from the "you can buy at level 1 a level 50 reactor", which comes along with this model, you need to make better use of the laser turrets at the start of combat. So, first thing you do is run away or boost perpendicular to the enemy vector and let the turrets do their work. After a few seconds under turret fire, you can face and rip them apart with those powerful railguns.

Personaly, I preffer building the ships rather then buying, but I've used Va'Ruun, Ecliptic and Crimson ships as a base to build, only salvaging the reactor and grav drive when needed, mostly at early game, but I tend to use similar designs to what we already have in game, but with some upgrades that make sense, like adding crew stations, workshop, etc. So far, I've build 3 ships that I would say are true end game stuff, build them for this specific purpose. One I build from 0, got a random Crimson ship and deleted to build the SisDef Chimera, then I've changed engines, added a bit more cargo and all Vanguard weapons, spend way more then I can remember, but I'm sure it was over 600k, but that Is what I call my Flagship, even used the OP engines from Walter Stroud quest, before the Kepler quest, I think it's Slayton 6830 or something like that, over 50k eache engine, plus the almost 90k reactor, a crazy expensive Grav Drive and so on, only the Deimos Bridge is another 40K, so the ship is really OP, but the Narwhal with upgrades would be cheaper for sure, unless you change reactor and grav drive. The second ship is the Kepler R, which I remodeled, changed engines, reactor, grav drive and used the square looking engines, I think it's name is something with P, it used 4 power so only 3 can be used, a lot cheaper then the 6830 or something and we don't need 6 engines to build, so the design can be smoother in my opinion. For the upgrades, the cargo, wich I got to reach over 15k without the cargo skill, and turrets, because it is so heavy it can't dogfight, I've spend about the same as buying the Narwhal, I think it's the way to go for those who don't care about boarding enemy ships. The third which was my cheaper 'end game' build was actually based on the Crimson, I think it's Wirght, ship in the 3 from, that one already have a 40 reactor and is relatively easy to come by even in 'lower' levels. Since it already had a quite good reactor, all I did was change the gravdrive, fuel and guns, that was under 150k with ease, but since I don't like it's design that much, I've build something between the Gladius and the Hoplite using the reactor it already come with, in total, I've spend less then 200k and build a ship that is as capaple as my Flagship but is lighter, even carrying over 3k cargo, but it doesn't have the 'utility' modules like the Lab and the Workshop, I've keeped it lightweight for what it have. I would say that is The best way to have a great ship for cheap. And for those who don't play in higher dificulties, just using the Crimson Wright 3 with a better grav drive, fuel and guns can be under 100k and still clear the whole game since it comes with a relatively decent shield.

Building your own is always the best ship, although you need to invest into starship design. The Narwhal's default internal layout is super janky, but most default ships you can buy all suffer from janky hab layouts. If you build your own you can set up two levels without ladders and can use hallways to guarantee doors in certain spots to minimize the layout jank. In either case, to get the best stuff, you usually need to progress some faction quests... namely Vanguard and Constellation. With 800k credits or so, starship design 4, and faction modules unlocked you'll set yourself up for the best components. Beyond that it just matters what habs you want and how much storage you need on your ship. On the Narwhal the 8A reactor is interesting because it has the highest hull in the game. It opens the possibly of hull tanking with ship parts, although on very hard difficulty this option is less effective and you're usually better off with a big shield and 40 reactor power. My strategy for Very Hard ship fighting is mount two sets of auto particle weapons facing backwards, and one manual particle beam facing forward. Fly away from the ships and your auto turrets will fire behind you, doing most of the work while you do your best to keep your shields from popping.

@@citizenzerogames1637 I have the Obliterator 250MeV Alpha Turret (it's an auto turret) & the PBO-300 Auto Alpha Turret (both C-Class) mounted facing backwards, then on the front I have the Vanguard Obliterator Autoprojector (A-Class & need to do Vanguard quests to unlock). The Vanguard one you can fit six of them because they only cost 2 power each, and they have a range of 3,600m with a high fire rate. The next problem is powering all of these weapons. Sure, you could power down the front weapon when you're shooting backwards, but nah. First order of business is getting access to the SAL-6830 engines. These bad boys are C-Class engines that only require 2 power per engine. On my main C-Class ship I get 94 mobility with 3520 base cargo and only 4 of these engines, sitting on a mass of 2952. You unlock these by doing the main quest line (the part where you sneak around Neon with Walter). You have to choose the option to do business with Slayton Aerospace, then you get access to them in the Neon City Stroud-Eklund ship builder (Walter's neon office he takes you to at some point). If you really wanted to min/max it, you could probably give up some more cargo space and do 3 engines, but I like having decent cargo space. So with 4 engines, you only need 8 power for full engine mobility. Then you need at least these crew members: Vasco: +1 reactor power Sam Coe: +1 free engine power Omari Hassan: +1 free shield power (hired from a bar in Akila City) Barret: Particle beam weapon system skill makes your particle beams weapons recharge faster, meaning you can assign less power to them and still get the same recharge rate as full power. Hell, I tested the Vanguard weapon recharge rate. With no crew assigned, I was around a 3.5 second recharge rate at 12 power, and maybe 3.8 second recharge rate with 9/12 power. Barret onboard brings these numbers down to 2.8 and 3.3 seconds, respectively. So with the reactor power skill maxed out and the crew members above, I can get 46 reactor power with a freebie in shields and engines. This means I can max out shields & engines, and then do 9/12 power for 3 weapons and have a single power leftover for the grav drive if I want. The goal of any engagement, especially with multiple ships is to keep your distance. Enemy ships seem to get a massive damage boost on very hard difficulty and so you cannot withstand 2-3 ships close up. This is why I do the backwards auto turrets. You can't shoot backwards, but they can.
