I started taking lessons 3 weeks ago (although I do have lots of recreational skating experience). I have already started doing 3 turns and waltz jumps ! It's amazing how fast you can lean when you practice hard and are determined, and I can't wait to see how far I can get in a year. I'm 18 and the other kids during my session are like, 6-11 years old. It can be disheartening to see kids so much younger than you performing elements that are currently too hard for you. BUT as you said, "Be a figure skater because you love being on the ice". I skate because I love it, and nothing can take that away. I can't stop thinking about skating, I go every morning at 6am to practice, and most days I skate 2-3 a day. It is NEVER too late to follow your dreams. Thank you Joel, you motivate me and inspire me everyday! I hope to skate with your level of skill and grace someday:)

I started skating at 41. It is never too late. I know people who actually learned to skate in their 50s, 60s and 70s, and one lady who started a few years ago and just turned 80! Young adults in their late teens and 20s seem to pick up skating pretty quickly, especially if they have previous experience with rollerskating or dance. The older you get, the more challenging it is. What Joel says about taking your time, enjoying the ice, and not worrying about other people, is spot on. As an adult you will learn at your own pace, take the time to enjoy the process and really perfect your basic techniques. If you rush through, barely passing levels just to say you passed, you may not have a strong foundation for your more advanced skating.

I really would love to skate to be honest. YOI and you have inspired me to skate. I've always wanted to learn how but I'm afraid of falling. I went to the rink to skate with my friends because it was her birthday, I fell 11 times but I just laughed it off. It's really fun and new to me. I just love it very much. I'd love to learn how to execute more difficult tasks but I just don't know yet.

Skating is amazing. I just watched YOI last night, and it really made we want to ring up my old Coach and tell her that I'm getting back into it. I used to take Figure Skating lessons with a couple friends, but I ended up stopping because Life got in the way. If you mean you want to learn to Skate in a basic way, the I recommend maybe getting someone to go with you, or just making you way to the middle of the rink, and try to figure out how to skate back. When I was little my Dad dragged me into the middle and left me there while he did a lap, and I crawled to the edge, so he did it again. Needless to say, a couple turns later I figured it out. Then he took me around the edge and held my hand and all that. He made me figure it out myself first.

I'm 17, i'm still in my first year of figure skating and now i've got my forward and backward crossover. But I remember when I started to learn how to do them backward. I was really struggling with it like.... a lot XD I was so scared to run in to someone that I couldn't focus on doing the right move ^^" And then a girl around 10 came at me to gave me some tips, in fact she was in the junior competition section of our club, but not only that in fact she was apparently the best of her section >> I'm ... well I have anxity problems and I panic ...very quickly when I people are watching me. So at first I just kept falling over and over again for no reason ;-; But she stayed and she started to act like if she was my coach the entire afternoon. In fact people around us were kinda shook because well she (remember she's just around 10) was yelling at me whenever I started to hesitate to do it or even hit my leg with her watch when i was being to slow ... while i'm a 17 year old beginner XD Still it was really cool being coached ^^ (btw now I'm working on my entry for the one foot spin (I got my one foot spin but... still need to work on it I still fail a lot) and to improve my three and my Mohawk >->)

I figured (ha ha get it!) you were in B4. I got stuck on the three turns and for the longest time thought "okay, I'm done" then one it I just got it. I think figure skating just runs that way. You work and work and work and nothing, then one day it's like your feet say "Oh THAT'S what you want me to do!" I'm working on an axel these days and hoping I'll stop two footing my double. :) . After Basic you can go into Freestyle and in that there's Pre-Pre... but you can do the adult testing of Bronze, Silver, Gold. Have fun!

Blu Skates Thanks for that info! There’s a good TED talk about how it takes 20 hours to really get proficient at a new skill, so I won’t give up if I get hung up on something. My problem is trying to do everything at once and expecting to be able to, so what has helped me is making a list of 5 things to work on to take to practice.

I'm so glad I found this video! I skated for only a year when I was 12/13 and even then I felt out of place because of my age. After watching the winter olympics and Worlds I was reminded of how much I love the sport (doing it, not just watching it) and I wish I didn't quit. I'm 18 now and I am looking into private lessons with one of my old instructors who was so kind and encouraging. But I still have that fear that I would be made fun of because I would be surrounded by little girls who can skate way better than me. This encouraged me a lot! Thank you so much Joel!

Thank you for helping me find my love and passion for the sport.

I've always wanted to learn ice skating but I live far away from the rink, and of course, there's also the fear that I'll be the only newbie in the rink. But YOI has paved way for a lot of people like me and we don't feel so alone anymore. I live about 250km away from the nearest rink and I've only gone there twice, but once I graduate I hope to go there much often! Thank you so much for being very inspirational and breathing hope into many people like me! It's really nice to see how genuinely you love the sport and how much you want to share it to others... Bless you and I hope to see you in YOIcon!

This mission is so true. It doesn´t matter how old you are, if you love even only an idea of being on the ice, do it! I´m 27 and i just started and i can tell that it was one of the best decisions i´ve ever made. I´ve always loved watching figure skating, but i had other hobbies and i just thought it would be too complicated, so i didn´t give it a try. And then, many years later i had this worst phase of my life and i watched Yuri on Ice. Since i love to draw and paint, my folders were soon full of YOI pictures, but one day i just decided - ok, i love it so much, i´m gonna buy skates and start. And that´s exactly what i´ve done. I skate for almost 3 months and right now i upgraded to Jacksons, cause i know that i´m completely in love with skating and i will no longer regret buying more expensive equipment. In fact i recommend to all beginners - try some profi skates on if possible, it´s a completely different feeling.

this speaks to me! cause i just started 2 months ago and im starting beta already at 15! skating has inspired me so much that me and my friends are trying to make it a club at school (a lot harder than it seams hahaha) so thank you so much for making this video cause sometimes i get discouraged cause i see so many other people who are younger than me doing jumps and spins but i still love doing it! you look really tired haha don't forget to rest up! a lot of people are gunna be sad (me included) if ya get injured! (OK I DONT KNOW IF U REMEMBER BUT when i was still using rentals i but my skates under a chair cause me and my friend were going to eat lunch then when we came back you were sitting on the chair and my skates weren't there and i told my friend "aw dang my skates aren't there, ill ask him if he's seen them" and my friend was like "WAIT-" and i just walked up and asked you and u were really nice and you actually helped me look for my skates for a bit and then i saw them in the corner and when it was all good and i went back to my friend she had this look on her face and i didn't think much of it until you said "i think they want me to do eros again" and me and my friend just looked at each other and i asked quietly "wait... eros? is he?" her: "YEAH THATS JOEL MINAS" me: "I JUST TALKED TO JOEL MINAS???" AND I DIDNT REALIZE IT WAS U UNTIL THEN AND I SAW UR GOLD SKATES AND THE MAKKACHIN IN UR BAG AND I GOT SHOOK ok thats the end hahaha)

After I saw that red eyes i was like, "joel are you sick? Your eyes are red, your nose sounds runny, you looked really tired." Joel, hear me out, rest first. We still need you in top shape ;) Your motivations are just what I needed rn. Thx Joel! I've always wanted to be able to ice skate since i was little. But there are no place to ice skate in Indonesia. There were times when a rink will be open in a mall for one week only, however the rink wasn't that big, and it's hard for me to get the feeling of really being on the ice. Ice skating is fun, and I hope I could ice skate again someday (although it's been a couple of years since i last skated) I wanted to try roller blading, but the environment is just not perfect for the wheels of my roller skates. Dancing is my only option, but I won't complain, I love dancing xD

I started at 42 and been ice skating nearly 3-4 times a week for 5 months. Not problem. I started jumps now after learning all three turns, mowhawks, front and backward crossovers. I used to rollerblading before and been a professional boxer before and still training. The conditioning of your body is very important as ice skating is all legswork and can be very hard if you do things properly staying low on the ice while skating. Already mastered the three jump, waltz jump and toe loop single jump. 🌹💪💪 If I am doing it at 42 everyone else can. PS: there are people here on their 60s+ and learning ice dancing with their partners. Amazing!!

Omg Joel, you’re so sweet and motivating! I’m so happy to have stumbled upon your video. I just started learning to skate this week and was looking for tips for beginners! I fell in love with ice skating like many of us because of Yuri on ice but I felt I might be too old for it

Hi!! I really love your channel, when I feel that I'm about to give up I always watch this video, now I'm having a hard time because I broke my ankle while i was training in my rink. I'm 14 years old, and well, few moths ago I remeber that I used to cry everyday because I really wanted to go to the Olympics someday. In the rink where I train (Lol, I'm from Mexico) I have really good coaches, I started skating a year ago, and I already can do single jumps!!!, and well, a girl of my rink was selected to represent Mexico in a Junior Grand Prix, so if she could do it, maybe I can too!!!. I know it will be really hard but, well, if I don't fight for my dreams nobody else will do it, nowdays I'm still dreaming about going to international competitions someday, but I don't cry and feel sad when I think about it. I will work really hard everyday and give my best, and maybe I get a surprice and maybe someday I will be in the Junir Grand Prix!!! I won't lose hope!!! Thanks for everything I really love U!!!!

I started skating at the beginning of this year at 20 years old and it’s honestly the best thing I’ve ever done. There are also plenty of other adult beginners at my rink and many of them are older than I am.

I'm 24 and starting lessons, and I really needed this. Being transgender and an adult, it's going to be so hard trying to get competitive, but it's inspiring stuff like this that really makes me more excited to try, and also the non inspiring stuff fuels me to prove people wrong. >:) I love your videos so much, your Eros is love. And yeah. That's pretty much it.

Thank you I really appreciate it. I'm gonna be 19 in 3 months and yesterday I saw the Olympics and I thought it was beautiful. I don't see myself ever getting there lol. I used to do ballet and gymnastics and I can't really do those anymore. I really want to get involved in something again and I'm sad that I really can't. When I saw skating, I thought it was beautiful. I wanna be able to dance on ice. I was afraid to start, but now I'm not!! It's nice to know I;m not the only one that's gonna start late. Thank you for your advise. Yes you have encouraged me. Hearing you say it encouraged me a lot :DD Thank youuuu

Thanks for the tips, Kuya Joel. 💖💖💖 You really encouraged me to push through in ice skating, especially when I saw you perform Eros, (I'm still trying to get my bearings back kinda hard to skate in a rink when it's kind of expensive, so now I'm persuading my mom to buy roller blades so that we can both exercise on balance) it's a passion I had when I was eight (despite doing it only once in my childhood, it was love at first fall.. and spin), one of the few physical activities that I really loved, (I kinda hate sports at times, I'd rather just read a book or binge-watch than throw a ball or something), a passion long forgotten since there was a lot of factors that kept me from going back into the ice. I hope I see you in a rink soon, and probably hope for you to be my coach (I'm not proposing, I think that's a new way for YOI fans to propose lol, just literally be my coach. 😂 Kind of a high dream, but a girl can dream big. ^_^) Thank you very much and don't push yourself too hard. 💛♥💛♥💛♥

I started to really like ice skating when I looked into it after watching the obvious anime. But yeah, I was worried that I would be too old to start because everyone else has been doing it since they started walking and such. I’ve already slowly started to get on the ice and work on the basics but I think after watching your video I’ve become more determined to become better in the sport and move up to figure skating after I’ve become more used to the ice. Thank you so much, man. I really do hope more people become inspired by your encouraging words ❤️ ily

Figure skating is so beautiful, I'd love to take lessons, but until then, I was actually somehow lucky enough to find a small outdoor (winter only 😢) rink that I can walk to from my house! So I'll definitely be going as much as possible :) And thanks so much for posting all these videos! It's really motivating to hear that there's still hope for me and to see you skate 😄 (Also I've done ballet for a good amount of time, so I like to think that maybe I have a bit of a head start? 😊 Although I've fallen pretty far behind because I've moved relatively recently and missed a lot of important years finding a new studio so maybe not so much 😅)

Hi kuya Joel! Thank you for uploading this video! I want to skate badly ever since I was little but never did got a chance to do so up to this day (I'm currently 15) and I was hoping that I'll be able to start skating soon (maybe next year or so, who knows haha). The nearest rink from my home is the ice rink in SM Megamall which is 2 hrs away. I learned that if I really want to start skating, I will just have to bear with the distance. Thank you for inspiring others so much!! I really enjoy watching your videos!!

Hey! I watched this video when i was really insecure about beginning so late and i didn‘t know if I should start at all, because i was scared! I‘m skating for a few months now and even if it‘s hard sometimes, I couldn‘t be happier to have started skating. My fear, that i will be under too young children were gone too, since there are many people in my age and even adults who are at the same level at me! Discovered YOI this month, Yuzuru Hanyu and you this week, and learned how expensive the sport is today. My heart's breaking. 😭😂😭 But thank you for your words. I'm 16, and I'm really scared to try, to be honest. But I have this feeling, that feeling like I'm looking for something. Something that completes me. I feel like an empty canvass that's just waiting to be painted on. And I have a feeling that ice skating is the answer. I used to skate when I was a kid but remembers nothing at all. But your words really inspire me to get back to it. Thank you.

Thank you so much Joel for posting this video. This will definitely inspire others to skate. I hope that some people will read my testimony. I've been skating for nearly 4 years (nearly three years of competing; will be competing in my first Adult Sectionals this Friday March 9, 2018). Yes, I'm living my dream as a competitive adult figure skater. I started taking ice skating lessons at the age of 39 (first competition was April 24, 2015) on after being inspiring by watching Michael Christian Martinez compete at the Sochi Olympics 2014. Before that, I became an avid fan at the age of 10 when my family and I watched Holiday on Ice 1988 in Manila. Yes, I'm born and raised from the Philippines 🇵🇭. Sadly, I never had the chance to learn how to skate as a child. But I'm happy that my childhood dream of skating came true. I'm also a "Yuri on Ice" fan. That's why I support Joel. So happy that I was able to skate with him 6 months ago at SM Megamall. I gave him a "Yuri on Ice " T-shirt and YOI stickers. I hope to see you here in L.A. Joel. I really do love skating. The rink is #myhappyplace. Skating is therapy. It helps me to overcome my shyness and builds my confidence. It teaches me to face challenge both in the rink and in life. I hope that I've inspired someone here (sorry for the lengthy story). Love the sport; follow your heart and dream.
