Is It TOO CHEAP? - Old Timer Splinter 24OT Carving Knife Review

Everyone wants an affordable whittling knife, and having a folding knife with a variety of tools like the Old Timer Splinter is one of the first people look at. Even with its 6 different wood carving tools, it feels like an under performer and lacks the quality steel needed for an effective carving tool.
Knife Specs:
- Steel: 65Mn Carbon Spring STeel
- Rockwell Hardness: 53-55
- Needs to be sharpened
- Poor edge retention
- 6 tools in total
Overall, I didn't like this knife. You would be best served putting that $20 towards a quality tool that will hold its cutting edge and not be as flimsy.
Still, if you feel like you have to have one, they are on Amazon and Ebay for a great price, check out the link below to pick up one for yourself.

For the price it's presumptuous to expect the blades to be shaving sharp. If you're going to be using any cutting tool you need to learn to sharpen your tools.

Good snd fair review. I opted for this knife and was sadly very disappointed. It was blunt out of the box and even though I spent a long time sharpening it I couldn't get it to hold an edge. I was worried it was my sharpening skills so this review gives me hope. It's a shame as I really wanted a good compact whittling set for little get aways.

Thanks for making the vid! The old timer seems like a cheap way to learn the different tools and forces you to learn how to maintain/fix them up.

I have no problem sharpening or even modding my own blades. My concern would be less of the finishing of the craftsmanship (that I can finish myself if the steel and temper itself is ok) and more so if it loses an edge considerably faster than a flexcut and if it wears out or breaks soon

The Splinter does indeed loose its edge much faster than the Flexcut. Matter of fact, right after using the knife in the review, the cutting edge had visible wear and was no longer sharp. I could literally see the worn spots on the cutting edge when rotating in the light. This knife is cool in concept, but terrible for long term use.

I just got mines yesterday and just found this. lol. It IS hard. But as my first tool set for whittling? Im glad I got it. But I definitily see I need to learn more on how to work with it. Thanks for this :D Once i get more comfy with it and the techniques, I'm gonna invest in a more quality tool afterwards. Like upgrading from training wheels lol

I think it’s the perfect entry level tool for someone to use and see if they like it. They can then decide to buy the much more expensive option if the concept is liked

I'm not much of a carver and not excellent at it but when I do some carving I have gotten Beaver craft bass wood and I do have a Old Timer carving kit and a Victoria Knox pocket knife As I'm carving I will use the small Blad from my Victoria pocket knife As I carve and when I need a nother tool for my digging in I will pick my Old Timer tools to do some digging in and I do have to say it works It's a low budget tool and I will have to put on a strop as I need it and After all it is a budget tool but I do have to say it works for the price

I think one of the main problems with those cheaper carving knives is the blades most the time are not sharp enough, and those curved blades can really stump a newbie on how to sharpen if the edges are poor right outa the box.

I think that if you are interested in learning to carve you should buy quality tools. Many years ago I purchased a beginners Flex Cut palm carving set. Love it. I’ve found cheaper versions and have tried them just for the heck of it and those cheaper tools would make a beginner lose interest in carving. Don’t settle for poor quality knives, tools etc! I purchased 6 of those old timers to teach kids carving and regret it!

Not sure if this one is the SCH24OT modle i noticed there were two after looking online.the SCH24OT says it has High Carbon Stainless Steel i wonder if that one has better steel compared to the other one that says 65Mn.

I have a feeling that the steel varies a bit with age, but if you keep it sharp it will serve you well enough.

Not sure if you caught it, but he has owned this knife for awhile & as he said even put a considerable amount of time on the edges, & itbwas still a hassle. But really if you know good tools & knives you can look at them & get a general idea how they will perform. I own one of these & just looking at the cutting edges onnthe tools tells you a lot.

Ya, I can see that showing for sure. But I also think part of the frustration was that this tool just couldn't hold an edge as the steel was too soft. It could have been the one I had though, but there are still better options at this price range and I go over them in this video here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oGyburCIZdPIZ5M.html
