I just hope the desire to buy something new and shiny is not a reflection of other issues in your life. You have a lovely family, so as long as you and they are being fulfilled by the travel and lifestyle and not drowning in the pressure of vlogging and other life pressures, it isn’t going to matter what size or shape your van will be.

Simple...add a small tent, some blow up mattresses, amd a portable stove, portable potty or shovel etc to your kit. Go where you want in the van, then leave it there and push on further with the tent. You get the best of both worlds. Feeling the sand/ mud between your toes, and luxery at home. It doesn't have to be all or nothing. We did The Gibb this way. Got to camp and get close to nature..sometimes uncomfortably close, then return a few days later to a nice home on wheels. 😊

We did the same thing the first time we did the GRR and lots of other places. This is good advice. Simon and Liz, you swag camped with your last van; that’s all that’s needed now. Build a new van if that’s what’s wanted (it seems to be the thing to do these days); before you built this van, you were looking then at options to go smaller, further and harder, and it seems like that itch hasn’t gone away. However, I’m with Liz; less over-thinking & more just getting out and doing with a simple camping set up.

The issue that seems to be developing is that people are starting to realise that content creators on KZread etc is not the real world. It feels like that content creators are travelling for a business rather than the joy of travelling. They have to create a revenue stream to travel and this drives the content. Many of us who travel do it for the love of it, pay our own way and deal with lifes issues in private. This isn't a criticism just a view cheers

You're 100% right. What's shown in a 25min weekly video is never going to accurately reflect what life is like 24/7. We try and show a bit of everything but at the end of the day we want to inspire and entertain, not just show what real life is like. Making content is costly and time consuming so it needs to generate some revenue or no-one would be able to do it long-term.

You can step outside anytime you like! You can’t always escape the weather or the bugs if you don’t have anywhere to retreat to, and being full time you need options from time to time, particularly if someone is unwell. Setup the vehicle and/or the caravan with a basic kitchen and start using it when you can to experience the outdoors more. You already have swags I think, and have talked about doing more travels in just the vehicle so setting that up with a kitchen would make sense.

We’ve done a lot of travel…WA, NT, SA, QLD TAS and NSW…harsh off road and bitumen…we were initially inspired by some YT’ers…the well known ones…however very quickly we realised this/these were our trips…not following in others footprints. Getting water, food, dump points…where to stay were never shown and still rarely shown by YT’ers and these are daily chores…plus washing, checking van and car. We love the experiences but we now don’t get caught by the glitz and glamour as shown on YT.

Like the TOP 10 best/worst style videos , the relentless creep toward homogenised carefully crafted fake sensational (OH NO OUR TRIP IS OVER only to find they had a flat tyre 🙄) thumbnails coupled with the not too subtle spruiking of mediocre brands/products is driving viewers to search for something new and could easily be the beginning of the end of similar channels. I'm very aware making YT profitable is not easy and there's a fine line to walk. Interestingly, there a significant data showing a swing in popularity and searches back toward warts and all, less professionally edited content. For example, having recently sat down with the owner of a large and successful premium Australian caravan manufacturer we didn't discuss the pretty beach footage, we discussed at length your water maker system... food for thought. Keep up the good work.

Hello I feel you and I are on the same page (see comment of mine), I enjoy watching the early episodes of content creators and as you mentioned before they become a “business”. All creators follow the same template approach and most if not all suppliers hitch there wagon to these creators. For example when I see another creator telling me how good the Ecoflow power hub is I turn off immediately. You could name another 3 product suppliers who are everywhere on line now. It’s the same with destinations, how many creators do we need in WA at the same time? They all seem to head to the current “in” place and follow each other. What disappoints me is that they don’t need to follow the creator template, many have a good story to tell and share. They don’t need to push products or create tired cliche thumbnails, just share your story and we will watch. Anyway I feel that the mood of the viewers is changing and more and more will become tired of the same content and same products being pushed. We are starting to see more creators have “honesty” sessions about there channels. I wish these guys all the best and hope they go back to being a family that traveled to see this amazing country. Leave all of the business side of it behind. Cheers

@itsrixtube food for thought indeed. There's a lot to consider when it comes to content and it's frustrating to see fake, sensational and click bait content perform well. We keep telling ourselves they will burn out and it's not a good long-term strategy for growth, but we're yet to see it. We want to keep it real, but that's only possible if people decide to watch the videos. Unfortunately, that's not always the case. People say they want real and honest content but the data says differently.

Yes, I agree. We were down in Denmark in February, staying at the Big4. This park is huge 250 sites. It would half empty and then fill up daily, even some that wanted to stay a day or two longer had difficulty in getting a spot. Quite a few were W.A locals, farmers having a couple of weeks off. But most from over east. Reminded me of kindergarten, but instead of the best toys in the sandpit, the best Toys in the caravan park. Spoke to quite a few that had no bookings and were reliant on a free camp or luck in caravan parks. Too busy as you mentioned

The Challenge for the future is finding new locations to Video. W.A. is at Saturation point with youtubers, covering all areas from Esperance to the Kimberley. The Beaches, Forests, Desets, Canning Stock Route, and Gibb River Road, the Goldfields, and the Wheatbelt, all done several times by youtubers living the dream. On top of this, is the number of formerly free camps now being closed for various reasons. That's the real challenge for the future.

We have a 16ft poptop. Outside fridge and kitchen. Separate shower and toilet. East west bed. Bunk over dining table which was a bed/couch. We’ve done 6 weeks with two teenage boys. We managed and inside was for sleeping. We enjoy outside living. There is a kitchen sink and bench so we use an induction cooker or butane gas cooker when weather is yuck outside. Doable and we love this size. We also enjoy our swag which we’ve done many 6 week trips. Simple is awesome but comfortable is too. Good luck and can’t wait to see what’s on the horizon.

Yep agree long days in the car together travelling the ideas can get crazy. One thing about outside cooking and you said it the environmental conditions when trying to cook. Keep an inside cookin option especially for those days where its hot, windy, sandy and fly ridden. They are the days the children will be cranky and hungry and just need to be fed.

Great content Simon, it would be testing some times espically for new full time travellers. You and the family show what it is like to live in a caravan full time with your ups and downs. Would be great to see more content on when you can't get into a campsite that's full and have to try and find somewhere else also the bloopers that happens when filming before the editing. I will see how we go when we head west for a month in our 15ft stoney creek hybrid as that suits us for couple travelling, will be the longest trip we have done. I’m new to your Chanel and love your thinking 👍. We have ordered our van which is 17’5” with an ATM of 3100kg. Our plan is to travel with 2900 kg full laden. Our objective is to be fully off grid capable and comfortable. We used your counsel and overlaid our vision for travel when we spec’d our van, much respect for your advice! When you are a newby there is a hell of a lot to understand when trying to build your van. You have a limited time before the kids are of an age where you can’t be as mobile., so got for it. If you get it wrong you can change again and will probably get you some great content along the way. Good luck

Yeah. We just upgraded from a foldout to a small hybrid, both with outdoor kitchens. I have no interest in an inside kitchen. For us, that will be later in life when we don't feel so capable. To me, what we do is still camping. I'm not interested in towing a small motel room. It's all about the outdoors. I cook when the sun is going down and the flies are gone. Sometimes mozzies, but use a spray or bug zapper. Part of the thrill is overcoming the challenges. I love cooking on a real fire or in my Cobb oven. I do that more often than use the slide out 4 burner gas stove. Having said that, we don't have kids with us, and we don't do it full-time. Good luck in your new plans.

Ages and stages. Like you - I have tented with my children and then, as I got older - switched to a camper trailer and couldn’t believe the luxury. Now single, 65 and retiring soon - I’ve decided to travel around Australia again. Everyone has their opinion on what I should travel with - most recommend a van! This time, however, I’m going for a small 13 ft hybrid caravan full height. My criteria - it has to be something I can manage myself and be reliable as I am quite mechanically challenged. It also has to have outdoor cooking but, for the times when it is wet or there are too many bugs - I need to be able to cook inside. I prefer to live outside but I’m old enough to want some creature comforts. I live in Vic so cooking outside is not much of a challenge - few storms and bugs but it absolutely was a pain in the neck when there were midges and wall to wall flies. I’ll be interested to see what you get that would cover all your bases for power, dishwasher, storage for a family, somewhere to do editing and home schooling, etc. I imagine travelling full time with young children would be quite challenging so would recommend buying a two burner gas stove and trying the whole cooking outside thing in current setup and see how it goes. Have fun x

I must admit, I love seeing you guys every week, but you have to put your needs and wants first because that, at the end of the day, is why you are doing this with your family (I remember your Carnarvon Gorge adventure and tear up too when thinking about the emotion you allowed us to see and the insight into your childhood, camping with your Dad), it's not really about us viewers. Perhaps, cut back on the vlogs? Once every 3 or 4 weeks with a rundown of your adventures for a while to see if you can be more fulfilled as an adventuring family or maybe just pull out a tent and some swags every now and then, hike into the mountains and be wild and free for a bit? Whatever you choose, we will support your travels and follow your journey regardless. Don't worry about the negative Nelly's, they make their own choices and are looking for others to blame for their own issues. Simon, is changing the house the answer, or getting out of the office more? I have recently changed from a Tvan to an AOR, both with outdoor cooking. I love it, however, the two biggest drawbacks wind and wet weather. The Tvan was pretty good, but I have yet to see a caravan that has addressed the issue of an end wall on a awning that is simple and effective. Similarly, you need a good wind break around you stove, ( I don't know about induction in a breeze). Look forward to the discussion and ultimate choice of van.👍

  • @TheLifestylePioneers

OMG keep the comfort and luxury! Happy wife happy life! You can always cook outside the caravan with a gas or induction cooker, etc, but if you only have outside, what about the flies, the heat, the cold (remember your trip to the southern highlands and there was snow!!). Yes, there are 4 of you and you're already in a small space, full time. If it was just for smaller trip, yes, go more rugged, but I reckon in your situation, you currently have the best of the everything!!! Don't do it Simon! Edit - have just seen the last bit of the video. It seems like you've come around Liz, so it's all good. I love my little haven of luxury to return to after a day outdoors, but you are probably more adventurous than me! That's common. People fall for that idea because they only see the bright side, unless they start 'stalking' those few youtubers who actually tell it all. The question is, how much do you actually want to share with everyone else. Common sense should tell everyone, that there is plenty (probably more physical) challenges with this lifestyle than when lifting the feet onto the couch at home. In saying that, we pull our hats to all those people who home-school their children whilst travelling. On the other hand, the children will probably thrive in this lifestyle much more than sitting in a classroom with limited physical activities. We are very interested to see which caravan will be your next one. We are guessing something, but after your last change from one brand to another we are not sure, if we are nailed it ;-) All the best and thanks for your great videos.

From what we've seen it doesn't have a great setup for bunks. We're not sure we want to go pop-top either.

WA is sparce , everywhere is more than a cut lunch away. What camp areas that are available are now busy as, during this time of the year. Beware.

It's certianly a tricky one, but it's better than a lot of other areas.

I deleted my last comment guys as I re-read it and realised how much of a dick I sounded. I still stand by what i said wrt moving your computer outside / getting a swag😂. As for a new van, stay with gas-less but put a 4kg ring on the drawbar so you cango back to using the BBQ. I would also stick with the same size van, dont forget the van is your house and if you get stuck somewhere due to crap weather, you will be thankful for the space. Also, its not just you & Liz anymore. You have the kids as well

Such a great video, I love how you two work. I think long as you both keep happy together and as a family, the rest comes and goes. You both have been invaluable in assisting us in our plans. We are keeping our home and I think if we want a break from caravan life, we’d go camping or go somewhere just to take a breath from the daily grind. It’s your home so I definitely think you need to cover those small creature comforts that are important to Liz and keeping the kids in a routine. I’m sure it will be exciting whatever is decided. Thanks for all the great work you do with videos. Maybe do them less frequently? Although I can’t wait for your weekly release lol😂. Alexandra King Island 🏝️

Personally we agree with the smaller nimble set up but we don't have kids LOL. We are waiting for our new Lifestyle Reconn R2SE to be built in December then this time next year we will take off full time with our Jeep Gladiator. We like to keep it small so we can go where the big huge set ups can't go. Personally not a fan of the truck craze that's going on.

Simon, take your editing gear outside and work. I've got a four person tent you can have for that real outdoor feel.

Its interesting as it seems that many of the top end YT vloggers buy a new caravan and / or tow vehicle every 2 years. Not putting them down but its not realistic for most of us to do this. Good on them if they can afford it. Sometimes puts me off watching when they keep pushing things that way.

We do it for a while range of reasons but mostly that we see an opportunity to try and show different options. It's not intended as a suggestion for what others should do.

Costs are biggest concern, now wouldn’t recommend sell up. Best to have a home base or renting out for a few years. We couldn’t be a flogger! Small kids maybe , but teenagers won’t do well, need better schooling and home base lifestyle, especially for their future

Can't agree with you there. Life's to short to play it safe. We've tried that path and it wasn't for us, maybe one day though. Selling up was the best thing we ever did.
