Ask your house owner about cheap food places. Ask him where is the Galle Sunday or Saturday market. ( its call POLA) You can buy all vegetables, fruits and fish for very cheap price. You do not have to spend Rs.25,000 for a week. Trust me.

Hi friends, I am from Australia and have been to Sri Lanka many times .. you went to a expensive supermarket !! .. go with a local to the markets for vegetables and fish, it's so much cheaper, also local shops are much cheaper for everything !! .. your room price is good. Enjoy the adventure.

Dont go to the super market to buy vegetable's. You said you paid Rs1000 for tomatoes 500 grams. If you go to t local vender. ( its call local pola) you paid around Rs.200 for a kilo. Also do not buy rise and flour from a super market. If you go to a local store you can buy more cheaper. For fish too. Do not buy fruits and vegetables from super markets. Local stores are more cheep. you will pay half of money. try next time and give us another vidieo.

@2:30 Those bakery products are actually very traditional to Sri Lanka & are referred to as "short eats" by the locals. Though European influenced thanks to 450 odd years of occupation, they have a much longer history in Sri Lanka than say a Samosa which is only a recent arrival on the island.

Exactly! Most foreigners think buns and stuff aren't traditional, but samosas, naan and all the new indian food arrivals are traditional, which is definitely not the case😅We grew up eating those bakery products, not samosas.

Normal locals don't buy peanut butter,honey ,seperate chicken,srimps,liquid milk stuf......,they simply buy rice and vegetables mainly. Also their have cheap fish options to fullfill protein.but it's your budget and your choose.western food related things are little bit expensive, because we do not use it that much and no one trying to make it.

On a short note, since you seem to be unaware of the srilankan culture and background, Srilanka was colonised by the Dutch, Portuguese, and the British so our culture is quite a mixed. During the British colonisation era, they brought Malaysians and Indonesians back with them to srilanka. Furthermore Arab traders from different Arab countries and Morocco came for spice trade and settled down in srilanka. Due to this factor unlike other Asian countries srilanka is quite a mixed culture and our food is also a fusion of different countries and culture. The bakery food you saw in arpico is traditional tea time or party snacks. We call it short eats. And we srilankans love milk tea and we a cup of milk tea in the mornings and evenings. People tend to mix our culture to that of the Indian and other south Asian countries just because they are the neighbouring countries. As for curd you can get the pure buffalo curd in mud pots in many local shops

You have to go to a local market to buy the necessary items, because the prices of the products in Arpico Super Market are very high compared to other stores in the area.

Arpico super centres are mostly suitable for buying packaged food and imported goods. For buying locally produced vegetables and fish/meat, I recommend Keells super.

Yes Arpico foods excellent . Cheap and quiet low quality could buy from Cargills or keels where most lower end locals are use.

Coconut oil is the best for health. Specially for cooking purpose. But you can reduce coconut oil price from 50% if you buy it from a normal grocery other than a supermarket. And supermarket white coconut oil is not healthy. they use chemicals to make it white and pure. you can buy normal coconut oil from a grocary store. when you buy coconut oil from a grocary you have to bring an empty bottle

You guys bought those from a supermarket, but there are some little markets where you can buy those a little bit cheaper.

Ok You got the wrong Tomatoes thats why its very expensive, and also the salt would cost just 120Rs not 200, And dont ever buy eggs fom super markets, you can get them for less than 500 Rs from a normal market. ANd instead of sunflower oil, use coconut oil which is cheaper and healthier. ANd also you bought Bee honey which can be very expensive, instead you can buy Kithul Tracel as a substitute for bee honey which is cheaper.

Arpico Supermarket is relatively expensive , you follks should have gone to the 'Main market ' or the 'Pola ' to purchase vegetables, price you paid for tomatoes seems over priced, also look in to other super markets like 'KEELS ' or Cargills , my advise you to do a price comparison.

For an average family with 3 children may cost $120 or maybe $150 for the whole week's food. Yeah, I think for that family, $500 will be a great amount for the food. You may need at least LKR 125,000(single person) or more to survive in Sri Lanka with a normal conditional life. Lots of people are poor. For a 5-member family, at least LKR 400,000+ salary must be needed. (Child's educati0n+vehicle maintenance, extra needs, and day outs, etc...) Is Sri Lanka expensive or cheap when compared with the Philippines and Kazakhstan? ☺☺☺☺

Well good budget for foreigners as a digital nomad. They can adjust just around 1000$ 1200$ per month. But in Sri Lankan locals just living for about 4 5 months with 1000$ may be even more some others.

No for us $1000 per month..For tuition classes for Kids, Vehicle maintenance (80,000 per one service in auto Miraj), Electricity bill, paying taxes, and with all the stuff... Lower-class people skip their meals, that's why they can't live according to that money...But you can't even think of a better life for such amount.

Real situation is very difference in Sri Lanka.Sri Lanka is best country for foreigners .Typically most european country pay above 10$ per hour for there employees .let's think employees work 8 hours per day they can earn 80$ in europe countries .in Sri Lanka average minimum salary per day it is Rs 1000 ( 3.27$) that mean monthly minimum salary is Rs 30000 ( 98.16 $) in Sri lanka 1chicken kilo gram is Rs 1200 daily average salary is Rs 1000.I think it is best example for know about the real situation of sri lanka.majority people represent in that category .

In Sri Lanka normally the average salary between 40000 50000 for month that's why Sri Lanka is very expensive to survive if you are a foreigner you will feel cheap because your money converted the Sri lankan rupees you will get lot of money but you have to earned here work here then you will feel how expensive Sri Lanka most of the people they can't get their three meals properly

Dumb unfair comparison. All the items you bought are imported except rice. Live and buy like the locals. We don't buy cereals in a box, that is a Western invention. Instead try rice porridge with coconut milk Kiribath or porridge made with Mung Dhal for breakfast. Galle is expensive Western touristy town and the price of imported goods are marked up for them. They only live there for a few days there and they are there to spend money.
