Is it divisive to call out false teachers? With Monique Duson and Krista Bontrager

When we identify false gospels and call out false teachers, are we the ones who are actually being divisive? Should we just agree to disagree, even when the gospel is at stake? What is actual biblical unity?

Agreed. Think about it. A young Shepherd boy named David had a LOT of practice with his Sling protecting his Flock of Sheep, before confronting Goliath. Google "what shepherds do". Their primary responsibility is the safety and welfare of the flock. Pastor is Latin for Shepherd. Think Psalm 23!

Agreed. Pastor is Latin for Shepherd. Shepherds are responsible for herding their Flocks to good forage, food. In this case Spiritual Nourishment. Logically Pastors need to know where the Spiritual Nourishment is so they can Feed their Flocks, in this case Hungry Believers.

The mega-church model is a hard problem to shake. Many pastors believe their numbers don't lie, "Look how many souls are being saved!" they say. At the expense of discipling those souls. Thirty years of my life has been spent in a mega-church and the last 6 months have been such a blessing to nourishing me in ways I've dreamed about for the last 7-10 years. Alisa, Krista, and Monique, you have each been a part of that process most recently and you need to know that what you are doing is making an impact for the Kingdom! Do not stop! Anytime you need a word of encouragement to counteract the world's hate, I've got your back! We are fighting a real enemy who wants us to quit and lay down our weapons - but our weapons are not of this world! Praise Jesus!

"We are fighting a real enemy who wants us to quit and lay down our weapons - but our weapons are not of this world! Praise Jesus!" Said adversary ("...a real enemy...") also aims that we shall believe a lie, and love it and live it and wage warfare for it, as that would be enough to work against us and to work against the final population of The KINGDOM. So what lie? Any of them will work, perhaps some more vigorously than some others. Which lies need thrown out of our walk with Christ (deserving of all praise, honor and obedience) and how do we know what they are? Well, Emmanuel (God with us) said that he who keeps His commandments is he who loves Him. And He said that He and the FATHER are one, and that He kept His FATHERS' (HIS, by virtue of what was just related) commandments and that neither were they nor would they be canceled or changed. So, have the commandments of men come to be taught as doctrine? I'm not talking about ceremonial law. That is fulfilled by the life, death and resurrection of The CHRIST. I'm talking about the Ten Commandments. Gods' moral law, the list which so many of are used most by all in the world to keep a check on societies. (Yes, this one has been altered for so long now, and this other has been revised and another has been cast out for some imagined reason, that's sort of part of the point.) Have the commandments of men come to be taught as doctrine? It seems as if this is what has happened. "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children." and "Many pastors have destroyed my vineyard, they have trodden my portion under foot, they have made my pleasant portion a desolate wilderness." Hosea 4:6 and Jeremiah 12:10 Care to know what verses this book I use references to? (Okay, I'll spill it.) Isaiah 5:13, with 2 for Jer 12:10; Isaiah 5:1 (and 2, because 1 ends with a colon instead of any full stop punctuation) & Jeremiah 6:3 What readings, what power! (I'm going to put this in the straight comments also, except for this line.)

What the church is up against is entire generations of children that have been indoctrinated within our education system (K-PhD) who have been programmed into social justice, critical theory, cultural Marxism, postmodernism, and unbridled sexual immorality… they have been conditioned for acceptance of these philosophies and ideas so as to easily reject the tenets of Biblical truth and adopt the progressive line of relativism and division along racial, ethnic, gender, sexuality, and a variety of victimized categories… the oppressed and oppressor. These divisions are the result of deconstruction theory that take every idea of cultural, societal, historical, and legal thought and deconstruct every line of belief, reconsider it under the umbrella of progressive or postmodern ideology, and then reconstruct a new belief system of progressive thought beside and within the old one so as not to shock people into the realization of the truth of its contradictions to biblical truth… then get them to accept the new false teachings while believing they are still in compliance with biblical truth. Friends, it is our education system we send our kids to that prepares the fertile grounds for them to reject what they are taught at home and church and accept false teachings… and, if we are not aware and vigilant of what is happening we have no ability to halt and reverse this seeming irreversible redirection of our society towards secular hedonism and new age heresies that are all too seductive… just like that forbidden fruit in the garden of Eden that was so enticing to Eve, the new thoughts of these humanistic self-virtuous utopias will seduce the indoctrinated into the unintended consequences of their own self-inflicted harm and eventually total destruction.

In order to be united, in true Spiritual unity - not a false, make-me-feel-good unity, we must stand our ground against false teachings, false interpretations, and misapplication of His Word. If people think or want to call that divisive, that is their problem. The Father said, of the Son: "This is My Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. HEAR HIM'" He told us to Hear the Son - not fallible men. The Lord & Saviour's teachings & commands are very plain and clear to those who have ears to hear, eyes to see, an opened mind, a willing heart, and earnestly seek the guidance & leading of the Spirit. They do not need any explanation or interpretation by any fallible men.

I was shocked about two months ago when I wrote my first apologetic on FB. It sadden me when people from my own group called me out and tried to get me to come back to a group I was discerning was wrong Theology and it was Word of Faith, Prosperity doctrine. Tell God what you want and he will give it to you. I sat and told these people they were wrong for telling people they don't have to work for what God gives us. There was no stewardship in what they were teaching. No, theological basis and they were quoting Kenneth Copeland, Kenneth Haggin, and Joel Olstine. None of it was scriptural based. They cherry pick. Yes, they came to me through what they would say is scripturally based, but how they did was not Biblically according to scripture.

A couple things I would say to this as well is that unity is founded on the basis of what God says, not upon what we say. When people buck at disunity in this way it's because they generally do not honor God alone to have the authority. Meaning, God is the one who decides what is right and wrong, light and darkness-we are not the ones who are deciding these things. If we ARE deciding these things upon ourselves then that means we are deciding it upon our vanity, selfishness, pride, or something similar, and this would be wicked. It is this that people are accusing those who are walking in RIGHT disunity as doing. Ironically, that is exactly what so many of these things (critical race theory, progressive christianity) are basing THEIR divisions upon, not upon God's Word, but upon themselves. Deciding what is true out of themselves. THAT is what is wicked. To divide because of what is of God and what is not of God is righteous, to divide because of what is of our own selves, a selectivism is wicked. The difference is that one is OF God and one is OF self. It also means that people don't understand that God is FOR what is of Himself, and unity is ONLY founded in what is of Him. "I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours." (John 17:9) Unity is always based upon what is OF Christ. People ignore this and think themselves "loving" to reach outside of this. It is treason to Christ and it is also WEAKNESS in the person who does it. This is a very common error today, where we try to have some "unity" as a whole, when Christ Himself is against such things, showing that unity is only in that which is of Himself, and He rebukes all else: "Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters." (Matt 12:30) The real issue is that people are offended at Christ and HIS division. And they are offended at HIM having authority.

@@user-wq4xy5tf8x Hello! This is VERY true. I'm thinking on Romans 12:1-2 with what you're saying. It is only when we truly give ourselves to Christ in reading His Word and obeying Him that we are transformed. I think we often try to have "unity", even in Christ alone, but when we're not filled with Christ and brought into true submission to Him, then it's still fruitless. This is because as we can only have unity if it's in Christ alone, so can we also only have unity in Christ if each of us, individually, are wrestling fully into giving ourselves over to Christ (both in abiding and in obedience). Bless you, sister

Hi Alisa, I have really appreciated your channel and especially your discussion of progressive Christianity. I mostly like that you are careful and not overly combative in the way you talk. I am a pastor in a church. In recent months, we have dealt with what I might call "incipient CRT" or "proto-CRT". Perhaps you have heard people talk about Paul and John's letters that deal with incipient or protognosticism. Paul and John don't call it out directly, but the beginnings of it are visible to the trained eye. In my church, I am the one seminary trained guy, the youngest pastor, and the one who preaches the most. I also went to a college that discussed Marxism, 3rd wave feminism, postmodernism, and critical theory quite a bit. I'm writing because I just want to share my approach for dealing with this kind of thing in a church. Basically, I do not "call out" CRT using any of my sermons or my writings for the church. But from time to time, I write things that specifically address some of the core issues at stake: 1) evangelism and discipleship are our priorities from Matthew 28, not becoming activists for social change, 2) our source for spiritual truth about ourselves and the world is the Bible, and nothing else, 3) the gospel is Jesus' death for sins, resurrection, and ascension to the Father until he returns to rule the world, not anything else that people might want to reshape it into, 4) Christians are called to respect authority, obey them, even when they are unjust, and not resist them, 5) like you and your guests said, true unity is coming together around truth, not just trying to get along and tolerate every opinion. Even doing these things, it has brought up very intense conversations and people have left the church. I never tried to make an argument against intersectionality, systemic racism, or dismantling structures. I simply exposited clear Bible truths that I knew for certain would bother someone who began to believe something beyond the Bible's teaching in these issues. I am really saddened by the fact that people have left; but I don't regret anything I have preached or written. On the other hand, I did have a meeting with the other elders to talk about the Marxist ideology in black lives matter and a few other related issues. We are all completely on the same page, praise the Lord! Time will tell if I am wrong for not calling out CRT more "openly". My goal is to follow the example of Paul and Peter in addressing the underlying truths that are incompatible with human philosophy, rather than trying to exposit and rebuke the entire flawed philosophy of CRT. I have no issues with those who do; but I am trying to be cautious not to move the focus away from God's word as I lead others in our church. Again, thanks for this great conversation. All the best to you, David

Public teachings have to be addressed publicly, because of the harm that is done to the people affected by them. To make a public profession to be a teacher, means that you have made yourself publicly accountable. It is not for the purpose of hurting the false teacher, but of upholding the truth against error that will be many times more destructive than the hurt the teacher has to endure by being called out about being wrong.

When Jesus prayed we would all be one, he wasn't necessarily praying for unity. He was praying for integrity. Integrity to the truth, the Gospel, is what unites diverse backgrounds and makes us like-minded.

Pastors should consider that as shepherds, their one primary job is to protect their sheep from wolves, and any other predator that could do harm. Problem is there are more hirelings than those who are truly called. For what it’s worth this is what I have seen throughout my 36 years in the body of Christ. It makes my heart truly heavy!

That was a really great discussion. It was interesting to see three ladies tackling the same problems of unity from their unique perspectives. I was especially interested with Monique's explanation that it has to be the Gospel first, the doctrine first, then you can come and have the hard discussions. She really impressed me. Well, you all did, but she just grabbed the bull by the horns so to speak and wrestled it to the ground. This is something all Christians need to learn to do, get the Gospel fixed right in their heart, then taking these hard questions and wrestling them to the ground. We don't need to fear, for "Greater is He who is in you than He who is in the world." (1 John 4:4c)

I thank you all for standing for the truth of Gods word. Me & my husband were in leadership at the church that we attended & the false prosperity gospel crept in and my husband was an elder and confronted the pastor & his wife and it turned out that WE were in the wrong and that we were being divisive . It hurt us both that they treated us that way. We ended up leaving there and the church there remains under that false doctrine.

Don't you think that part of the problem is that our church leadership isn't qualified for the job? Or they aren't rising to meet the qualifications? Pastors aren't studying as they should. Leaders don't even know what they really should be doing.

It seems that we want to build bridges to span the chasm between races, genders, sexuality, politics etc. We do this in an effort to create a way to unity. We have forgotten that JESUS is the WAY. He is the bridge. Our job is not to build bridges but to point people to the WAY. Only when we (sinners and the saved) recognize that this is THE ONLY WAY can we cross the chasm between sin and life. God has already provided the bridge!

The best way to help people spot lies and false teachings is by teaching them and saturating them in the truth. Otherwise, they will never really know truth for themselves and will have to keep asking us "how about so and so, are there false teachers too". Also our own motive could be impure as we might just be pointing at people we don't like personally or people who we wrongly think are false teachers But if we teach people truth, they will be able to spot a lie from a mile away. That is a way of Jesus.

I had the misfortune of singing a song I knew with a band who did not know the song. The drummer set the tempo and rhythm and I sang words to a completely unrecognizable melody and tempo. ZERO unity! What a disaster! Such a great analogy Alisa! You know a knife cuts, it divides. God's Word is sharper than a two edged sword. It is meant to divide Truth from lies. When the true Gospel is taught, false teaching is cut out and unity occurs.

You keep up the great work my dear sisters!!! To those who call you “divisive” please lovingly remind them of scripture! We are to CONTEND FOR THE FAITH! It says: “Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints. For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ (Jude 1:3 - 1:4 NASB)”

I really appreciate your desire to stand for truth no matter the cost. I’m wondering how we determine “historical Christianity”. I like the idea of RE-discovering our roots doctrinally, but I also don’t believe that the most commonly held doctrines are always a clear indication of truth. Do you have any videos or podcasts you’d recommend that help clarify how historical doctrines are selected?

I one time tried creating unity with a wolf. I allowed him to destroy all but his own inner circle of our worship team, sending multiple people away from the ministry entirely, maybe for life, and leading others into a narcissistic prosperity Gospel. When I read through how Jesus addressed the Pharisees, the Apostles addressed Simon the sorcerer, or how the church fathers addressed the heiratics, I realize that it is sometimes necessary to oppose those who seek to exploit the church and lead them astray.

I am so thankful for each of you! My question is...each of these instances of calling out were done within the local church body, weren't they? Call out poor doctrine publicly... absolutely. Call out Christian leaders by name... Should we not go the Matthew 18 route on a personal, one to one level? I'm just tired of hearing Christians calling others false prophets/teachers simply because of certain doctrinal differences ie. Calvin v Armenian. Gifts v cessation. Women Church leader v. No way.

Yes, true, due process is a forgotten word with many heresy hunters, who slander people who disagree with their pet doctrine. Little evaluative discipline in many who "cry wolf" over every doctrinal disagreement. Yes, private correction is a wise biblical way to correct people in effective conversation, like Priscilla and Aquilla correcting Apollos error in Acts 17.

I attend a church where the only unity is if you are a member. No CRT there, but since we are not members we cannot serve, have support of pastor or deacons etc. They have cut a hand off. We disagree with how membership is handled and how scripture is being used to justify membership and being taken out of context. Any ideas?
