Is It Concussion or Mild Traumatic Brain Injury?

Because concussion or mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) results in small microcellular changes in the brain, which can’t be seen on a CAT scan, diagnosis can be difficult. A person does not need to be knocked out and lose consciousness to be diagnosed with a concussion or mild TBI, says Tracy Shannon, PsyD, a rehabilitation psychologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Often, a common symptom is initial confusion that resolves itself after 24 hours. To learn more or to schedule an appointment, call (614) 293-3380 or visit wexnermedical.osu.edu/patient-....

She sounds like she knows what she is talking about. I know from experience that it is extremely difficult to find a medical professional that knows anything about concussion/Mild TBI after affects.... the general medical professionals/ neurologists, etc. proved almost worthless. If they can’t see it on an image, they theorize. They often dismiss post traumatic stress and other issues simply because they don’t know.... worse yet they try to address issues with medication not knowing what they are doing... I lost a lot of faith in medical professionals. In fact, most of them don’t know much at all, at least clinically... The good ones are difficult to find !

Yep you are right about that. I hit my head skiing. I think I was blessed for not going unconscious. Shortly after but delayed by 3-5mo had a breakdown that put me on a trajectory of a diagnostic journey. An unintended finding was that I have autism. Go figure. When I was in the mountains we're all quirky. Nobody cared that much till 2008 rolled around. Since in those days if it was a close-head impact they couldn't do much. Even 3yrs later in 2012 still couldn't get an assessment referral from doctor because she said she didn't see anything.

If I had to go through this again, I would try to find a specialist that specifically deals with TBI, and concussions of all kinds. I’ll admit, It’s very difficult. I was not able to and suffered for a long time with not being able to sleep and ptsd issues that my doctors could not diagnose properly …. it took about a year for me to get back to some semblance of normality although there are lingering memory issues, etc. for me, time was needed for my brain to rest and heal.

I had that with seizures, it's a month since it happened and I've started to notice that my reading has improved, comprehension of complex things (not so much), and awareness of time and space is a little bit off (not severe as before). And depressive symptoms decreased since starting moderate intensity exercise (walking-jogging-running for about 40-60 minutes a day [did that for 3 days and has been noticing a relief. *MRI was normal, but EEG according to the neurologist showed some abnormalities; which is why she prescribed an anti epileptic; which I haven't taken.

Last August, I was playing on the PC minding my own business, till I entered a Mild TBI and I couldn't even stand up, it kept happening to me for months but it stopped once I consulted a doctor and I was taking medicine, but I guess it is due to sitting in front of a computer for a long periods of time? As the doctor said I had fatigue in my eye due to it facing the screen alot of time And now I'm gonna re visit the doctor in July, wish me luck guys.

It always amuses me that the medical profession calls a concussion a "mild" TBI, when in reality there is nothing mild about it all! My daughter and I have both suffered from serious concussions in the last three years, and we are still not fully recovered. We have been through a lot of stress and trauma and needed a lot of help from a range of medical professionals. I think it needs to be re-named!

How do you think it should be classified? Rename to what? Are you suggesting we treat a person with a severe head injury in coma same as one with a concussion who is fully conscious? Please respect the medical profession. People dedicate their whole lives trying to learn this stuff, so that they can help people only to be made a mockery of by same people they are trying to help.

Hey, former buckeye here. How severe would you classify a three day coma followed by about a week's worth of constant vomiting and I don't remember anything from 12 hours prior to my attack until roughly five days later and the next week is still pretty hazy? Legitimate question, this happened to me on July 31st, 2015 and since I don't have continuing care I'm not sure what I should be doing at this stage of recovery. I still have good function, obviously. I can still talk normally and take part in intellectual discussion but I still get light headed if I stand up too quickly or bow my head and I get headaches at night. No drinking since it happened so that's no an issue. Thanks for your help, it's a shot in the dark but I'd hope I can always reach out to my university......

Decades ago, my brother and I were having a boxing contest. He delivered a massive blow to my head. It seems I stood briefly and then collapsed. I don't know how long I was unconscious. My friends had been with us all day. When I regained consciousness, I asked them, "Hey, when did you guys get here?" I had seen my parents leave earlier. Just then, they came through the gate I said to them, "I didn't know you guys were gone." For a week afterward, I was in a dazed state. I didn't get to the doctor. I've often wondered about any long-term effects. I have periods of "absence" and people tell me to "stay with us". At her wedding, my daughter said, "Now Dad, don't space out." I've been scolded by bosses for staring into space. Please comment if can. Thanks much.
