This is one of those albums that you want to hear continuously. One song flows smoothly into the next for a thematic feel. There are a lot of albums from the time that are like that. There was a decade where people made theme albums that were some of the best music: Dark Side of the Moon, Abbey Road, Aqualung, etc.

This album (Days of Future Passed) was one of the first, if not the first, of what is/was called a concept album. I would recommend that you listen to the album with either headphones, or nice speakers, maybe some smoke if you imbibe, but absolutely start to finish, no breaks (except to turn the record over if that's what you have). It is a masterpiece. I also hope you appreciate the engineering behind the sound. It's amazing for that era! I also hope that you take the time to listen to the next 6 albums of theirs, even if your don't react to them. It's like ice cream for the mind!

this is how we did it in Hawaii in 1975... get up at 530am, make some peanut butter and jelly sandwiches... drive to Mt Olamana... there was a cow pasture at the base of the mountain... find the cow poo.. pick the toadstools growing from it, brown on top, black on the bottom only... open the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, cover with toadstools.. eat... climb olamana, by time you get to the top.. things get colorful, enjoy the scene... its now about 9am.. go back down to the car.. Load the moody blues casette into the Craig 20W/channel under dash player.. crank it up... drive to the north shore, stopping at all the beaches on the way.. play moody blues, and if you get alll the way through both side... restart... enjoy.. smoke a few doobies.. drink a couple beers.. don't hit anything or anybody... play it loud as your speakers can take Jensen 3 ways ... and that was the very best way to enjoy this album ever. TRUE STORY, but there is more... arrived back at Hickam AFB and a blue and silver 707 was parked in front of base operations.. still pretty high, we checked it out... a line had formed, we got in in and out came President Ford... and he shook all us shroomers hands, weird story.. but.. ya.. it is true... we had a sober driver by the way, I'm 70 yrs old now and survived all this... statute of limitations is long expired.. I HOPE.

This was their first album after a lineup change that included then 19 year-old Justin Hayward (lead singer, guitarist and writer of their biggest hits, including this song.) They were given free reign to make this album, so long as they made it "symphonic" in order to show off the "new" stereo sound developed by the record company. "Days of Future Past" was the result and it's an amazing album, especially for 1967! The Moody's subsequent releases are not as heavily orchestrated, but still complex, very melodic and deeply intellectual. They're in a class by themselves.

The Moodies wanted songs that they could perform live, so they learned to play other instruments for subsequent albums. Cello, mandolin, sitar and sax were some of the instruments. In all they could play over 30 different instruments.

When I saw them in concert in '86 or '87, their big hits from that era were, "Your Wildest Dreams", "I Know You're Out There Somewhere" and "The Voice". My favorite song of theirs, though is still "The Story In Your Eyes".

It has just been announced that Denny Laine the original Vocalist/Guitarist with the Moody Blues 1964/66 has died aged 79 years. His biggest hit with them in 64 was ‘Go Now’ a great song. He then went to be the front man with Wings backing Paul McCartney. He was with other groups and a great Solo Artist! RIP Denny Laine 😢💖

Got the Ed Sullivan Show. Knew that from the date. I recommend "The Question" from the "A Question of Balance" album. It's literally 2 songs in one. They combined 2 different songs and created a masterpiece. Great job guys!

It is called ‘Question’ not ‘The Question’.

Their first three albums are essentially concept albums, intended to be listened to from beginning to end. I saw them in concert in the early 70s. They can go from the hardest rock sound of any rock band to the most melodious orchestral sounds in the blink of an eye. A truly incredible band.

Moody Blues was all about expanding consciousness by meditation. This album uses the theme of a Universal Day, not any particular day. This allows them to move in and out of a Universal sense of time.

The orchestra isn't actually playing during the song itself but comes in at the very end. They used a keyboard instrument called the Mellotron which can simulate orchestral sounds. There was no such thing as The London Symphony Orchestra. They used session musicians, some moonlighting from the London philharmonic.

I have spent many Tuuuuuuesday aaaafternoooons listening to this.

Thank you folks! The best version of this is the longest (8 min), where it is combined with “Evening,” which has another, gorgeous melody. But they have SO many great tunes…keep listening! The “Long Distance Voyager” album is awesome! Take care!

I had forgotten about this one, it's so melodic and it's got that super long breath support drawn-out phrasing that they do every once in awhile. If you want to check out a really up-tempo banger, and it was another hit for them, I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band. The bass guitar line is so urgent and the singing is just fantastic and it's got great lyrical content and it just feels so good.

Maybe the lyric about the trees calling me near is referring to getting away from the hustle and bustle of life to find some peace out in nature or simply enjoy being alive 😊 Another great reaction from you guys

This album came out in 1967 when I first entered the U.S. Army. I did not get to hear it until almost a year later. I believe it was dubbed a "concept" album. The songs flow into each other from track to track. This, as I recall, was one of the first "rock" albums to feature a full orchestra. I think "Tommy" by the Who did something similar as well. We considered albums like these as "head" albums as they were not albums or songs o dance to but simply sit back and enjoy. Great reaction. Take care.

@@floydlawson3765 I was busy. I was in a barracks of double bunks. We had no radio that could pick up any "rock" stations. The E-5's had separate quarters and some of them had complete stereo setups with an amp, a receiver, a phonograph and some even had reel to reel tape units. Once I made Sp5 I moved off base. At that point I was able to enjoy my love of music again. Take care.

Dropping this on a Tuesday is pure perfection! LIke you said, this concept album is a discography of a day, and each song gives the rhythm of the parts of the day, kinda.

The Moody Blues have been one of my favorite bands since the mid 1960's. I love the stories and messages in their lyrics, and the way they are packaged in the beautiful, melodic, dreamlike vocals and instrumentation. Both of you did a great job with the lyrics, especially considering this was the first time hearing this song. I interpret the lyrics and music of this song as seeing the beauty of an ordinary day. I think the message is that we miss that beauty by getting caught up in a hectic, busy, and stressful lifestyle. As much as I would like a reaction to the whole album, I agree with you that it would be wiser to take a few other songs instead.

Ironically, this video was published at about the same time that the death of Denny Laine, guitarist with the Moody Blues and Wings, was announced. RIP Denny.

Great analysis of the song. What you need to do, is watch them on their MOODY BLUES Live at the Royal Albert Hall, with the London Symphony. It will blow you away. FYI: The London Festival Orchestra is the London Symphony that were moonlighting as the London Festival Orchestra, according to Graham Edge, the drummer.

Sad to hear today from Denny's wife that he passed away yesterday she wrote. Great song, great timing, and great reaction guys. Takes me back quite a bit. I was born in 70 so I got into them much later. Our band would sit around with a lot of beer and sometimes rip into a few of these kind of songs for fun. Keep up the awesome videos. All Of Moody Blues Albums are special to me as almost all the songs instilled within me an image of euphoria and imagination unprecedented for the time period. Most of all they tell a story and each song on an album creatively lead to the next song so you have to listen to the whole album. Great band and I have all their albums. I believe Justin Hayward said that he actually had 2 songs when he wrote this and decided to combine them.....and it worked. He's an amazing singer and songwriter....still touring at 77. You might also want to listen to "The Voice", "Question", and "Your Wildest Dreams".

The first 8 albums are all masterpieces designed to be listened to with headphones from beginning to end while studying the album art . In the 60’s it was pot or psychedelics and headphones when taking the Moody Blues out for a journey into your mind. They changed many people’s way of thinking about all aspects of life through their brilliant incomparable music

Play 'The Tide Rushes In' to have your mind blown. My favorite group of all time..

The lyrics here are part of the back to nature movement that was underway. The description of the afternoon is not urban, but pastoral, and making it feel mystical, magical. The wind is whispering a mystery in the trees. At the very end of the song, I imagine the sun is setting. Next up on the album is "Evening," and the sun has gone down, with lingering light on the horizon. IIRC, "Peak Hour" is the only upbeat, energetic song on the album. All of the rest is more tranquil and poetic.

I saw the Moody Blues in concert at the Desert Sky Pavillion outside of Phoenix, AZ. in '93. They and "The Phoenix Festival Orchestra" presented us with a fantastic performance of Days Of Future Past ... l just wish l had had a date who was ... worthy of the experience.

Days of Future Passed was one of if not the first of stereo rock albums recorded in stereo and the first progressive rock album. The orchestra on this track isn't an orchestra it's an early analog keyboard called a mellotron. The parts linking the rock tracks is the orchestra.

Totally forgot about this great song. TY. Actually searching for live versions. Heard reaction channels are being deleted for "replaying" tunes. Bands should be rewarding reaction channels for bringing life to their old great tunes.

Nice reaction for a Tuesday Afternoon. The other song that came to mind is The Rolling Stones Ruby Tuesday. Another great classic song. I can think of a few Monday, Friday and Saturday songs. No Wednesday, Thursday or Sunday come to mind.

You should do this album start to finish, everything is great, sort of like a day put to music....

The Moody Blues are my favorite band of all time. I had tickets to see the Moody Blues in concert at the Forum in Inglewood, California in 1969. But they got hung up in Customs and did not get to the gig. So the other band on the ticket had to do 2 sets, Jefferson Airplane. This song and Nights in White Satin are from their second album Days Of Future Passed in 1967. Their label, Decca Records wanted them to make an album with the London Festival Orchestra doing The New World Symphony by Antonin Dvořák to demonstrate their new Deramic Stereo Sound recording process. But when conductor Peter Knight heard what they were working on he thought that would be better and wrote the orchestral transitions between the songs about a day in the life of every man. The band and the orchestra never played together. The whole album was pieced together by record producer Tony Clarke, the sixth Moody. What sounds like the orchestra during the band's songs was actually Mike Pinder on the Mellotron.

The song is about a man walking away from his troubles and moving toward a new beginning. "I'm beginning to see that I'm on my way, it doesn't matter to me, chasing the clouds away." My sister introduced me to the Days Of Future Passed album around 1970. After that, more Moody Blues albums. Mike Pinder playing the Mellotron is what got me hooked on the band. When I heard he left the band in the late 1970's, I was disappointed. Within 5 years after Justin Hayward (Lead writer, singer, and guitar) joined the band in 1966, they recorded 7 albums that established their fan base with their progressive rock sound. All other albums following had commercial success but still, it was those early recordings that defined the band's unique style. My favorite song is Tuesday Afternoon. I've seen The Moody Blues in concert 3 times.

This album really needs to be listened to and it’s entirety. The song was originally titled forever afternoon Tuesday retitled Tuesday afternoon and releases a single for radio play

During this time, atmosphere was very important to the music and the words often were selected for their 'sound' in the given melody. So abstraction and feeling which hit at a deeper level was often employed and many of these guys from the UK were themselves painters or artists, so they saw the music thing as another way of expressing themselves.

You must listen to this album, lights off, laying on the floor, eyes closed. It’s the only way Sam and Phil. 🔥

The Moodies have been my favourite band since I was introduced to them with this album back in the 60s. Pretty much every track on the Core Seven albums is worth a listen. Hayward has such a beautifully expressive voice, and Lodge, Thomas, Pinder and Edge support him perfectly.

I saw the entire Days of Future Passed album played COMPLETE START TO FINISH on their 50th Anniv Tour of the album in 2017 at the Nashville Ryman Theater. Only Hayward, Lodge and Graeme Edge (drummer) left from original group, but still a very cool and satisfying experience to hear ALL the songs in order live, the way they were meant to be heard. I think they released a live Blu Ray of that tour.

I think the DVD from that tour was the performance in Toronto, one of only two cities where they had a live orchestra backing them up. I saw the other live orchestra show at the Hollywood Bowl. The rest of the shows on the tour used recorded backgrounds for the orchestra.

One of my favorite tunes .... I recall this was released just a few months after Sgt. Pepper's ... an amazing year of music.

Is it a song or an experience? Clearly the answer is....YES!

Aeesome band live saw them twice in the last century and once again about 20 years ago, always a fantastic show, especially when they went out with an orchestra and did this album as the centerpiece of their set. They don't make them like that any more. 🎵🎶

I never took the gentle voices as being the trees talking. Just part of the ethereal vibe.

You have to review Legend of a Mind by the Moody Blues…their tribute to college professor LSD guru Timothy Leary.

you are thinking way too much. Just close your eyes sit back and take the ride. Floyd , Blues, Tull, etc... basically almost all 60's and 70's music. Just chill and enjoy.

you guys have to do the album end to end for the full impact! the orchestra except for a small part at the end of Nights...never played when the Moodies did. what sounds like an orchestra is the Mellotron. written in a park while smoking a joint and he did have a dog named Tuesday. since you guys like music, try their song Procession, Story in Your Eyes for a musical journey thru time and music

that subsequent songs start going into the evening and twilight leading into "Nights in White Satin". "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Nights in White Satin" work as stand alone pieces, but as a part of the whole album just dove tails so nicely. A little trivia for you - "Nights" was the only song thar both The Moody Blues and the orchestra were together. All the orchestral transitions were arranged by their producer and recorded separately.

The London Festival Orchestra was a made-up name for a few guys adding strings

Sam made reference to "Peak Hour". It's my favorite song on "Days of Future Passed" and worth a reaction. My favorite Moody Blues album is "Every Good Boy Deserves Favour" which was released in 1971. The singer on "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Nights in White Satin" is Justin Hayward. However, when the Moody Blues were having their visa problems their lead singer was Denny Laine. He would later become a part of Paul McCartney & Wings. Sadly, Denny Laine passed away today at the age of 79. It would be worth your while to react to The Moody Blues' first big hit "Go Now" with Laine on lead vocal. It's a very different sound from you've heard today. R.I.P. Denny Laine.

I love the melodies. I love the faint snare and hi-hat. I'd be that guy in the orchestra with the triangle freaking out that I'd miss the single accent I was supposed to play and play it late anyway.

The album does go from day to night, young to old, and the days of the week. You need to listen to their live performance of Question and Ride My See-Saw.

All the songs on this album are good.. BUT, Put your headphones on , turn the lights down and listen front to back... opens a whole new appreciation of the music. ... Trust me ...

I'm guessing the Ed Sullivan show since that was about the only one on TV where they had our bands and they also hosted the Beatles for their first trip to America. I finally got to see them in an outdoor concert with my sister in Dallas in the 90s. Was a fun time on the grass with a picnic and wine. Grew up with them and many more that I got to see in college in the early 70s. I have this album still along with some others. This whole album is a one sitter. They always had deep, spiritual lyrics to their music so you have to listen to the words as well as the music. They and ELO did full album stories so suggest treating ELO the same with their albums. The trees reference is easy, trees want to communicate with humanity so if you go and hug or stand next to a tree you can have a conversation and if you know how to channel or communicate with nature then you definitely need to go to a forest and connect with the trees. The trees in forests are connected via all their roots to help each other out energetically and with other needs.

The Moody Blues - Tuesday Afternoon !!! Fantastic. There is another song that i was told to listen to as the intro to another. Others agree so you can find them listed as --->... Procession & The Story in Your Eyes - The Moody Blues... Procession is very "MOODY" and works as the intro to their get down rock of .... The Story in Your Eyes.

Group put the Mellotron to good use. It was not a synthesizer, but a series of key-activated tape players which could replicate notes as played by instruments. Here, it sounds like strings.

I saw The Moody Blues in 1973 at the Oakland Coliseum Arena. Fantastic. A group of close friends, guys and girls all went and we loved it. Smoked a few joints before and while at the concert. I was 16 in 1973...Beautiful memories....

You definitely NEED to do the full album to obtain the best possible 'experience' of all the songs - this one included, but especially Nights In White Satin (you've got the night and afternoon covered - now the dawn, morning, lunch, & evening to go!) "The trees are calling me near/I've got to find out why" is a line that resonates with me. As an avid hiker it puts me in mind of the peace I feel when I have the whole mountain to myself and there's nothing around but birdsong, the breeze, my dogs, the gorgeous views, etc. It replenishes my soul! Better than going to church for me. Loved your reactions to some of my all-time favorite music! This is my wife's favorite band.

I saw the Moody Blues in concert in Vegas and they sounded as good live as they did in the studio. Back in the drug era I always noticed that the British band were much more professional in concert than a lot of American bands because the American bands didn't a crap how they sounded all doped up whereas the British bands didn't take their audience for granted. They played sober.

I don't know if the Moody Blues pioneered the concept albums like this, but almost all their albums at this time seemed to follow a time line in life from "In search of the lost Chord", "Days of future Passed", "Horizon" and "To my Children's Children's Children" etc were all produced like this and definitely appreciated more as an album from start to finish as opposed to singles. A unique band with a unique sound ❤

Moody Blues Denny Lane. To soon to "Go Now" sad to hear about his passing. I'm turning 71 and just amazed how this music is still so relevant. In an interview,Justin Hayward said that the song came to him as he was with his dog walking the country side. He went on to say that smoking A BIG AFRICAN JOINT took him on a ride. Also the were the second,Beatles first of course incorporating the melotron, an keyboard instrument . It was used in Strawberry Fields Forever.

I bought this album when it was first released, after listening with you, I now have to go and dig it out of my pile of old vinyl!

Ed Sullivan. I love the MOODY BLUES. It was 1968. Alot of introspection and weird-Ness combined with the 60's lifestyle.

This was made at a time when FM radio was at it peek, with long-running theme music running. A wonderful time. And by the way, I guessed beforehand it would be the Ed Sullivan show. Many groups, made a debut on that show, including the Beatles. ;)

I wasn't a "huge" Moody fan growing up. But, then I was surprised, when seeing them in concert. It remained one of the best sounding concert I've ever been to. This song, I also remember, was a highlight of an old live album of theirs. Was this group actually better in concert than they were in the studio?

Depends when you saw them. The first 7 albums only had Mike Pinder's signature Mellotron orchestral sound on them. He was gone by 1977, didn't like the direction of the group. In the 80s, they still had some good songs and big hits, but like Chicago, Journey, Kansas became more of a pop group than a Progressive rock band.

Every Moody Blues album has an art masterpiece for its cover. Youve got to see Nights in white satin live. This is an album that should be listened to in its entirety as its 1 of the 1st concept albums This is such a deep rabbit whole so many great songs by them Seem them 4 times with a whole orchestra It starts in the morning and works its way thru the day. You seem to have the idea. This is very early prog rock along with Jethro Tull and P{ink Floyd and of course Emerson Lake and Palmer. Have you done or heard any ELP ?

Moody Blues were great and I was able to see them live, great group and great music

The Moody Blues made this album with the orchestra to test a new (at that time) stereo sound. You really should listen to the whole album, it was one of the first theme albums.

You chose cool songs. I def enjoy your channel and this particular song has special meaning to me.
