You just cannot beat the proximity effect of a ribbon mic - can you?! For podcasting, it'd probably work if you backed off a foot or two...or three!

Yeah...or just some good EQ work. Dylan was able to get this to sing. I only tweaked it a bit for clarity...didnt want to change it too much for the honesty of the video
Between my ribbon mic and my other LDC and SDC. I lean to the ribbon for any kind of video call or VO or just talking into a mic. They sound amazing!!! Definitely need some EQ in the end though. Still amazing!! This mic is on my list of ribbons to get one day.

lol...using a ribbon for video conferencing is a massive flex... I do have to say I am enjoying my dip into ribbon mics...and this one is absolutely my favourite now...
This is a fantastic mic that I use for all of my VO work, absolutely love it. Pure quality.
Hi!! Friend what is your best dynamic microphone to récord voices and which capacitor??😐 greetings ✌🏼
Super smooth
Yes to this! They've, Røde, invested in bringing a somewhat eclipsed type of mic into the prosumer market and we hope much wider use. And made in their own factory in Oz. Looking forward to hearing the music. It certainly had detail and presence on the guitar here. Five stars. Studio advice not to follow: just plug it into the mains to warm it up 😂

lol... I love Dylans take on it...he said it SOUNDS analog...and has that older sound from the 60s and 70s
Lets not exaggerate. Making a ribbon isn’t THAT hard. If youre trying to make massive quantities then yeah, you gotta tool up, but there are plenty of companies out there doing it by hand for not a ton of money and are some of the best ribbons Ive ever had. Take a look at Hohm microphones from Australia (surprise! Another Australian company making crazy sounding mics for not crazy prices!) The top end on a hohm ribbon can rival that of some of the better well balanced dynamic mics, almost into condenser territory. And the bottom end is absolutely insane. Glad to see that Peter is still involved since stepping out of his title a while back and focusing on the parent company. I had a couple of conversations with him over the years hes a genuinely amazing person that truly cares about his business. Looking forward to a first listen to this mic in a music setting! Thanks for the video!!

Hard is relative I guess
One of my clients was auditioning my mic locker. He mentioned he wanted a "voice of god" mic sound. I put up a ribbon and just like that he was sold. Went out and bought one. IMO the ribbon imparts a vintage cream difficult to achieve with other mics. Put up a ribbon, a good dynamic and a decent condenser on an electric guitar thru a Mesa Boogie and you are lost in sonic wonderland for mixing options. Roll tape.
Awesome! Have you tried the Se Electronics Voodoo Vr2? I have that one and love it. Just wondering how they compare.

@@DarkCornerStudios from what I saw in terms of reviews before I bought it then it still has some high end compared to many ribbon mics. Especially cheaper ones.
The mic sounds incredible! The other cam angle looks great, but the color is a little less warm than the main angle.

Yeah...color matching and all around color work in general is really not my forte...lol Learning here!
Saw an AEA video and ribbon mics are not easy to do for sure.
NTR has a safety screw on top , you need to unscrew if im not wrong .
this has the quality, just needs a little eq and stepping a bit away

Proximity isn't too bad...eq cleans it right up
I did not like how it sounded compared to your other microphones...for your voice. Also, did you switch your camera to the Sony. The image was very sharp and clean.

Oh yeah...4k editing and 1080 output...much sharper on the punch ins. And wait til you hear this mic in the hands of a brilliant producer like Dylan. It's...quite good...that's all I will say
Own it for the LAST 8 years. Almost from Day 1 ....... You are CORRECT. This IS ART !!! Hasn't regret this particular purchase not for a single second. Besides the superb quality of the sound , sometimes i use it in interviews ...... just to show off its image , which travels the spectator back in 1940s-1950s !!!!

Yeah...the sound and the silhouette both take you back!
Boxy, muddy, muffled?? What? This things sounds much crisper than many traditional ribbon mics. Try sitting it in a mix and you might have a different perspective. Some would say muffled, another might just say “un-hyped”. There is no lack of sibilance on this mic.

Especially with my voice...lol
I’ve recorded choir on medieval church with NTR some years ago. Results please still.
I have some sort of addiction to gear like this with a story. I'm just wondering how expensive it will be. Also, from what I know ribbon mics are quite delicate and can be literally burned out if you accidentally feed them phantom power so newbies beware.
@DarkCornerStudios

Yeah...this one requires phantom...and a lot of them these days require it...

@@DarkCornerStudios That's great to know. I've always been afraid of buying a ribbon mic and accidentally ruining it. People used to keep a FetHead permanently attached just to protect them from accidentally powering them.
This is nice.

Sounds "wooly" for you. I can't explain it any other way.
Wow! That sounds SO muffled!!! And boomy and boxy! 😥

There is an inherent proximity effect with ribbon mics due to the figure 8 nature of their pickup. These are not podcasting mics. They REQUIRE eq and compression as part of their post processing. Much like an SM7B...they are frequency rich and not harsh...that is the quality that is sought after
@mind-brainstudio927

@@DarkCornerStudios Roger that! However, I have, use and love an AEA KU5A (with their preamp) for some VO and it's nowhere as boomy as the Rode you're featuring. My two cents; the new Rode NTR is gonna need some serious EQ. Cheers!

loved your video, however your mike sounded a bit muffled , but hey thats just me soz

Yeah...ribbon mics are intended to have an eq profile added to them. I couldnt do too much with it without actually misrepresenting how the actual mic sounds. But beneath all that...it is syrup and honey...trust me... Again...cant wait til everyone hears what Dylan can do with this mic in a mix

Who is George?
Sounds really boomy in a bad way to me honestly. At least on vocals.
Listening and comparing your voice Ito other videos to hear the roll off I do think the Rode Ribbons best use is not instruments but a sensual sounding person reading porn recitals from a book. I'd suggest an unknown for the test as your not my type - it would break the immersion. I don't mean Giblert Gs. One exposure to that s more than enough.

Excellent video. As always. Is it sexy or unique looking? Since I'm not in the market. I can go with both. If I had the ready cash. Would I have one? Probably. Just for the hell of it.

Thanks! If you are doing any instrumentation...this thing will add a whole other dimension to your work...guaranteed... Just wait til you hear the vocals on the upcoming song...it is impressive.
this sounds horrible tbh. very muffled, nasaly and kind of low bitrate.
