You just cannot beat the proximity effect of a ribbon mic - can you?! For podcasting, it'd probably work if you backed off a foot or two...or three!

Yeah...or just some good EQ work. Dylan was able to get this to sing. I only tweaked it a bit for clarity...didnt want to change it too much for the honesty of the video

Between my ribbon mic and my other LDC and SDC. I lean to the ribbon for any kind of video call or VO or just talking into a mic. They sound amazing!!! Definitely need some EQ in the end though. Still amazing!! This mic is on my list of ribbons to get one day.

Yes to this! They've, Røde, invested in bringing a somewhat eclipsed type of mic into the prosumer market and we hope much wider use. And made in their own factory in Oz. Looking forward to hearing the music. It certainly had detail and presence on the guitar here. Five stars. Studio advice not to follow: just plug it into the mains to warm it up 😂

Lets not exaggerate. Making a ribbon isn’t THAT hard. If youre trying to make massive quantities then yeah, you gotta tool up, but there are plenty of companies out there doing it by hand for not a ton of money and are some of the best ribbons Ive ever had. Take a look at Hohm microphones from Australia (surprise! Another Australian company making crazy sounding mics for not crazy prices!) The top end on a hohm ribbon can rival that of some of the better well balanced dynamic mics, almost into condenser territory. And the bottom end is absolutely insane. Glad to see that Peter is still involved since stepping out of his title a while back and focusing on the parent company. I had a couple of conversations with him over the years hes a genuinely amazing person that truly cares about his business. Looking forward to a first listen to this mic in a music setting! Thanks for the video!!

One of my clients was auditioning my mic locker. He mentioned he wanted a "voice of god" mic sound. I put up a ribbon and just like that he was sold. Went out and bought one. IMO the ribbon imparts a vintage cream difficult to achieve with other mics. Put up a ribbon, a good dynamic and a decent condenser on an electric guitar thru a Mesa Boogie and you are lost in sonic wonderland for mixing options. Roll tape.

Boxy, muddy, muffled?? What? This things sounds much crisper than many traditional ribbon mics. Try sitting it in a mix and you might have a different perspective. Some would say muffled, another might just say “un-hyped”. There is no lack of sibilance on this mic.

I have some sort of addiction to gear like this with a story. I'm just wondering how expensive it will be. Also, from what I know ribbon mics are quite delicate and can be literally burned out if you accidentally feed them phantom power so newbies beware.

There is an inherent proximity effect with ribbon mics due to the figure 8 nature of their pickup. These are not podcasting mics. They REQUIRE eq and compression as part of their post processing. Much like an SM7B...they are frequency rich and not harsh...that is the quality that is sought after

@@DarkCornerStudios Roger that! However, I have, use and love an AEA KU5A (with their preamp) for some VO and it's nowhere as boomy as the Rode you're featuring. My two cents; the new Rode NTR is gonna need some serious EQ. Cheers!

Listening and comparing your voice Ito other videos to hear the roll off I do think the Rode Ribbons best use is not instruments but a sensual sounding person reading porn recitals from a book. I'd suggest an unknown for the test as your not my type - it would break the immersion. I don't mean Giblert Gs. One exposure to that s more than enough.
