No. It's not even close. Infinity War has no "No, I am your Father" moment that will be quoted for eternity. It's villain is nowhere near as iconic as Darth Vader. It's not a fair comparison. Infinity War is great, but it's great with the context that it is built from an already tremendously popular cemented fantasy universe decades old with literally thousands of stories and volumes of content to draw upon. The Empire Strikes back was just a sequal to a hit movie at the time, there is no comparison. The Empire Strikes Back is still being talked about 40 years later as one of the most iconic cinematic masterpieces of all time. Infinity War is great, but it isn't anywhere near the same cultarally impactful masterpiece that was The Empire Strikes Back. I don't even like Star Wars that much, the first 3 were dope, the prequals were ok, and the current sequals are trash.

I'm really shocked by this. Iron Man and Ragnarok so low? Vol 2 so high? I guess we must just have VERY different tastes.

Winter Soldier is just so damn good. Even my mum loved it and she doesn't even know English that well... it's trilling, great pacing, great twist, great character developments... the relationship btwn Cap and Bucky just drawn you in so well and everything else that happens on the background complements it... Solid 5/7

The Hulk is on a rampage. In a highly-populated city of innocent men, women and children. And Iron-Man is the only Avenger... Who is able to answer the call, to action... Come on, now. Pretty good list, give or take. I'd put GOTG2 at the bottom of my list for sure (even though I do understand yours personal connection). And Infinity War is the best one...by far...if you are a fan. It's not a stand alone movie and it was never meant to be (as you mentioned). But for a fan that re-watched most of the MCU movies before going to see Infinity War, that's a total winner by far. I still cannot believe someone could pull off something like that. Not just from the comic book movies point, the writers and the directors. It's unbelievable to me how the movie is so well put together. I wish they would all got some awards for that, seriously.

Personally I put TIH at the bottom, but I completely understand that it's opinion in this case, as both TDW and TIH are going to be low on 99% of people's lists. That said, Thor represents the central conflict in the series, while IM and CA represent the conflict within the team. If Thor's good, then everything else is good. It's partially why I think Avengers was good, and AOU underperformed.

Getting rid of Edgar wright for ant man is the biggest missed opportunity marvels ever had.

True, but I do think if it was meant to be it would’ve happened. The Ant-Man movie we got wasn’t bad & was a solid entry and although Edgar Wright’s version could’ve been better, I think he’s got such a recognisable directorial style that it might’ve clashed with the MCU’s consistent unified style of movies that they’ve put out. I mean it’s all good imaging it and thinking it’d be great because we’re Edgar Wright fans, but it is difficult to tangibly picture an Ant-Man film both Edgar Wright & MCU style in my mind. I think because it didn’t work out too, that the Edgar Wright thing was just perhaps a naive fantasy & realistically would’ve happened if the idea was so great but considering it didn’t happen, we probably got the better movie with the non-Edgar Wright directed flick.

Especially with the sounds of heavy action music, punches, window smashing, etc coming to an abrupt halt by interrupted by the calm ding of an elevator lol. That’s that classic Edgar Wright humour led by visual & aural cues rather than dialogue & punchlines But yeah, that scene looked cool I won’t lie

I disagree about Thanos being the first fully realised CG character. Rocket literally had me tearing up in guardians 2, and when he was talking to Thor in infinity war you could quite clearly understand his character progression.

Wait a minute, you put GotG 2 above Homecoming, GotG 1, Black Panther, AND Iron Man 1? I agree wholeheartedly with you on Winter Soldier, though. That was a masterpiece.

Glad you rated Thor so high. I don't think people appreciate how absurdly tough making an alien techno viking running across rainbow laser bridges to teleport to alien worlds to battle frost giants is. How Kenneth Brannagh managed to take that material and not make it stupidly bad but made it pretty good. That's a feat.

One issue though, he did all of that fine. What screwed the movie was Jane Foster and coming to Earth, which puts it below Thor Ragnarok. So I have to disagree with him massively on that part. That said I rank Thor higher than most people do. I put it about midpack.

Ocek In terms of raw film quality? Yeah Thor’s weak. And it certainly has a mediocre 3rd act. But I give points to Thor the same way I give points to the first Avengers. Sometimes just being the first to pull off something stupidly difficult is worthy of praise. Even if the movie doesn’t stand the test of time. It’s like how you don’t give the Wright Bros plane crap for being a primitive aircraft. You praise it for being the first to actually work.

The only problem is that you don't pick the wright brother's plane and rank it somewhere between the SR-71 and the Concord, so you should probably pick a better analogy. Anyways, the reason why Thor ranks higher than other MCU movies, imo, is the fact that it has a complete story arc and a believable character transition. Thor makes one of the most radical character transitions in the entire MCU, and that can be held up by its own merits.

Blazing Saddles for it's time had a ton of humor that was taboo at the time but comes across as tame now. Thor is worthy of praise because it also validated Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant man and Thanos. Because if shit as absurd and silly as Thor's story works, then they would as well. Despite what folks think, Feige wasnt some master planner, he admits he winged alot of upcoming stuff.

CA - The Winter Soldier, Infinity War & CA - Civil War are definitely the three best movies in my opinion 👏👏👏

I loved Ragnarok, but the one issue I had with it was the fact that Asgard, a staple of the MCU, met its end in such a flippant manner. It was the equivalent of being at a funeral and saying "Aw, what a shame, but never mind. Wanna play Xbox?"

GOG 2 had some great scenes, better than GOG 1, but overall GOG 1 was just better balanced. That said. I loved the Yondu/Rocket scenes. Had me a lot more emotionally invested than Ego/Starlord.

I personally think guardians of the galaxy one is definitely another good movie that shows the beginning of characters and their developments. Guardians of the galaxy volume two is more of a fun comedy film. I always think that there’s one movie that is serious and another one that can be fun and enjoyable. For volume three a bit more dark and serious hopefully.

He's all over the place with bad placing here and a lot of his exposition is simply his own opinion rather than anything grounded in the reality of these movies. Placing Guardians 1 & 2 back to back so high ...? Putting Thor in the top 10 ...? (and leaving Ragnarok out of the top 10?) The love affair with all things Captain America apparently ..? Ant-Man at 17th ...? Hulk is too high. Black Panther is too low. Winter Soldier is a great MCU movie but is top 10, not top 5. He has Hulk ahead of Dr. Strange here as well as fucking Ant-Man, which he thinks sucks apparently (fyi - Ant-Man belongs either tail end of top 10 or somewhere in the 11-13 ranks). I thought Dr. Strange wasn't the greatest either but it was definitely better than The Incredible Hulk. Guardians Vol 1 was way better than Vol 2. I would keep Guradians Vol 1 int he top 5 maybe (or possibly 6,7 ish) but Vol 2 is outside the top 10. Original Iron Man is always top 5. This movie started off the MCU, was a great story, a great movie, and a great superhero movie. Top 5 should be (not necessarily this order) Iron Man, Captain America Civil Was, Avengers Assemble, Thor Ragnarok and Captain America Winter Soldier.

As well as the Sokovia accords which is what causes Civil war. Hulk and Thor also left the team after the events. He killed Quicksilver, Strucker, and made Ulysses a billionaire (as well as chopping off his arm)

I put infinity war #1 based on experience alone. I was on an emotional rollercoaster when I watched it the 1st time. From start to finished the movie never let go. I was literally traumatized by the opening scene and intimidated by thanos and the blackorder. I was completely tensed during the NY and Train battle. And devastated to see iron man as he neared his death but then relieved when Strange bargained for his life. And the ending left me restless.

The only one that i strongly disagree with is your rating on Thor, its very meh movie, definitely not top 10

Ok I like the list for different takes. I must object to Thor and Black Panther. They should be swapped. Yes BP is overrated and it took me a couple viewings to see it's core flaws and adjust my own list accordingly. However, Thor is simply underwhelming this character did not find his identity to me until Ragnarok. Also the direction was rough imo in that movie. Loki is a solid villain but overrated to me personally. BP has two solid villains that deserved more screen time. Shuri is great every time on screen and the action is shot very well albeit the final act fights have too much CGI. Overall, BP is a top 10 Marvel movie easy. Thor introduced a great character, however it's the following films that make him into the character we all enjoy.

I dunno, a techno viking running across a rainbow bridge and battling giant beings made of frost is pretty hard to bring to life and make entertaining. I think it's better than BP.

Lots of good points, thanks for sharing! Avengers 1 will always have a special place in my heart, both because it's good and because it's the first MCU movie I saw.

I hadn't seen this video before now, and so I watched it having seen a whole bunch of your more recent stuff, and was not at all surprised by the Russo movies all being at the top, a placement which I wholeheartedly agree with. I also love how you've liked a whole bunch of the comments criticizing your list.

Diamond Gamers WS, then IW. 3 for me was Strange, which he didn't like that much. Odd. I loved that he simply didn't out muscle Domamu, or have a convenient explosion blow him to safety while killing a better armored foe. It was a smart, fun climax.

I know for a fact that I've watched Captain America the Winter Soldier at least 20 times. I have to assume, that the first Avengers movie, is right up there in terms of re-watch occasions as well.

They need to put the Russo brothers in charge of all the Marvel movies. Infinity War was simply perfect.

Just now coming across this channel and love your essays. We have some extremely similar rankings, including the Top 3 (IW/Winter Soldier, Civil War) and a few specific ranking slots (Spider-man, Thor:TDW, IW2). I had IW3 a spot above IM2 and Guardians 2 all the way back at 15. Also, I think I'm about to watch Winter Soldier...again.

This list is excellent. You didn't overrate Black Panther, you have Guardians 2 slightly above Guardians 1 (my friends give me crap for feeling that way), and you have Cap 2 and Cap 3 in the top 3 where they belong. Really really great stuff

Its astounding how blind folks like you are to how racist that viewpoint of yours is. Black Panther is The Watchmen of Superhero Films. Just like Alan Moore's The Watchmen, posed the question in the 1980s of, "If superheroes really existed. How could they just ignore the fact that humanities nuclear proliferation poses a threat to all life on Earth?" Black Panther likewise, is all about this question, "If Wakanda truly existed in Africa. How could they just ignore all the suffering and injustice that their neighbors of the African diaspora are facing?! From set design. To costume design. Score. Soundtrack. Story. Characters. Cinematography. An amazing ensemble cast. And Director. Ryan Coogler, who imho is the best director Marvel Studios has. Who would have done a much better job at the helm of Avengers: Infinity War than the Russo Brothers did. Black Panther is the best MCU Film on my list at least. And it is far from being "overrated". Its just that damn good! And no. I'm not saying that its flawless. We praise the films that are good and great for all they get right and do exceptionally well. Not for being perfect.

You should really calm the hell down. It is highly overrated. The story was bland, the main character was bland, and the only things that were great were the music and the villains. You're also saying fuck you to me for giving my fairly tame opinion. You should really be less intense. LOL. I'm racist because I think a movie is overrated? Perhaps you are the racist because race doesn't factor at all into my view of the movie. Get a grip.

Black Panther was the 8th best MCU movie, not the 11th. But there isn't that much difference between 8th and 11th. The people calling it 11th best are only a little bit racist.

The top three are the Russo movies.

I had trouble understanding how you do these rankings since it’s kinda like comparing apples to oranges... but I like how u placed GOTG2 over GOTG... I loved that movie because it had all the best moments in the first movie, and adding on to that, a father figure arc that I can really empathise to. Anyway, I would love to watch a movie with you... it’ll be so cool for me to finally talk to someone that loves analysing movies as much as I do.

Im really surprised by some of this (I actually love both Black Panther and Ant-Man) but I also agree with a lot of this, specifically Winter Soldier at No.1 and I also prefer Guardians 2 over part 1! But regardless, you very well laid out your reasoning behind this list and I'd be curious to know where you would now sort Captain Marvel and Ant-Man 2 (and then also Endgame after we've seen it)!

Grace Berlin guardians 2 below iron man 2 and ultron?? I’m genuinely curious as to your reasoning, GOtG2 is easily top 5 at the least to me. Love the soundtrack and the characters are incredible- all of the guardians are perfect and the yondu, nebula and ego were great too. The end gets me choked up every time i watch it. Also curious as to how low the first cap is, I thought it was pretty good. Not amazing, but definitely not a thor dark world.

Damn - this list was so different (for the most part) and it was really interesting to see a video type like this spiced up a bit

I always thought of the Cap movies and the Avengers movies as their own series while still connecting to the other dozen movies

The winter soldier is nimber one for sure

If you are a fan of Shane Black movies, you are really going to love Iron Man 3. Like he said, it's basically a Kiss Kiss Bang Bang sequel, or at the very least feels in the same vein. Iron Man 3 was more interesting than Black Panther. Tony struggles and gets depowered, but is interesting while that is happening. T'Challa is very boring as the lead, which is a huge reversal from how cool and interesting he was in Civil War. The villain in Black Panther was much, much better, but it's really the only area that movie beat Iron Man 3 IMO. Edited - Because I realized I can't spell vein correctly on the first attempt, lol.

joe clark It is my personal opinion however I believe that Black Panther was just very slow paced and the CGI was not good compared to other MCU movies. I don’t hate the movie but it’s not a top 5 mcu movie like people say. I would have Winter Soldier, Infinity War, Civil War, Ragnorok, Avengers 1, Iron Man 1 all above Black Panther. Maybe even Doctor Strange but they’re about even

Devastator black panther was certainly overrated. Ultron was definitely not- it’s literally in the bottom 5 for most people.

I noticed some time ago that Black Panther has a lot of similarities with The Dark Knight Rises. Animal-themed superhero that has a black costume with ears and uses stealth attacks to take our enemies deals with his ideological opposite who destroys him in a fight and rules over his home while he recovers and rediscovers what makes him a hero. He makes a grand re-entrance by taking out bad guys while using an ally to pilot a vehicle to take out other bad guys. He starts a war between the keepers of justice and the enemy’s forces. People have noted the structural similarities between Ragnarok and Black Panther, with the whole “new king deals with the death of this father as he is banished” deal, so your note on Ragnarok being similar to the Dark Knight Rises was interesting to me. Great video!

For me Infinity War is the most re watchable marvel movie to date. There are times where i sit down to watch particular scenes and parts only to realize that 40 minutes have passed by without me taking my eyes off the screen, get bored or simply forget to pay attention. Infinity War is if nothing else, an absolute spectacle.

I feel like civil war really is every heros movie to some extent, they somehow managed to make every hero have a big part.

I'm maybe in the minority about Thor Ragnarok...I kind of hated it the first time I watched it, but upon a second watch (and hearing that a lot of the dialogue was improv), I did enjoy it more. But Thor seemed really OOC to me, and like you mentioned, the comedy was a bit much in places. Same thing with GOTG2 (Pac Man, anyone?)

the pac man shit fit starlord's character perfectly, lal. He's emotionally attached to nolstagia to the point of a fault. GOTG 2 is great when you understand all the nuanced character work present(everyone getting a parent moment with groot at the opening sequence, the song lyrics, ect.)

To me, Thor Ragnarok is by far the worst movie in the MCU. It turned the epic, almost shakespearean story of the first two films and Avengers into a slapstick comedy. The destruction of Asgard should have been an epic, devastating catastrophe, but it was just drained in jokes and action. Plus, it was just done by the worst villain in the MCU, out of random evilness. Why did Hela do it? Because she is evil.

Great list. Well done. I think Strange is maaaybe slightly higher, but only because of the unique defeat/draw with the big final baddie. And, you know, the more I have watched Guardians 2 the higher I have ranked it. It used to be below Vol 1 on my list, but now I think I have it as my number 3 overall, or something like that. It's just awesome.

I’m not shocked at Black Panther being as low as it was. I think it resonates more with its demographic (Black Marvel Fans) because a lot of the issues discussed. It brings up a lot of issues that the black community has and starts the discussion about the problems in our world and what’s going on. When you relate to those ideals and are happy that someone is finally speaking on it, you hold it higher. As someone who can’t relate to a lot of the things going in the movie, it is just a movie to a lot of people. A lot of your critiques are justifiable and I found myself agreeing with many of them. For me personally, the realities of Black Panther and the discussion of the whole Black People vs. African People fight was all too relatable. This relatability makes it higher on my scale. This is just like GOTG2 scores extra points with you because you feel as if you can relate to it.

No wonder you didn't enjoy it if you went in thinking it was a just a movie for black people, which is honestly a pretty racist viewpoint to have to be honest. There are no such things as "black issues". There are human issues. They took a Shakespearean tragedy and put it in a setting that happened to be about African people from an imaginary country. The acting might just be the best in the MCU, the story is good, the villain is good, and while it had a few problems (all movies do), I think you need to watch it again with a more neutral point of view.

I enjoyed Black Panther, but happened to agree with some of his viewpoints and critiques on the money. And we just have “human issues” bye, we ALL have issues specific to who we are... Each group has different problems, and although we find ourselves in common situations, we don’t all share the same problems because of who we are. Some white people have problems that black people don’t and some black people have problems that white people don’t. And I never said that Black Panther was JUST for black people, that’s just who I feel it was targeted to. Nothing racist with that, it would be stupid for Marvel not to Target African Americans for something like this....You missed a lot of the undertones of the movie, I suggest that you watch it again lol.
