Is Humanity at a Turning Point? Fritjof Capra on Patterns of Connection

Ғылым және технология

The Michael Shermer Show # 229
Michael Shermer speaks with scientist, educator, activist, and accomplished author, Fritjof Capra, about the evolution of his thinking over five decades. In this conversation, based on Capra’s book, Patterns of Connection, Shermer and Capra discuss: what it means to be spiritual in an age of science, nuclear energy and why Capra thinks we don’t need it and Shermer thinks we do, 50 years of progress or regress, limitations of models and theories of reality, limitations of analogies between western physics and eastern mysticism, mind and consciousness, and why Capra is hopeful for the future of humanity.

Fritjof is one of the greatest minds of our time. He is also one of my heroes in his activism, as an earth protector, educator, scientist and philosopher. I am grateful this man lives amongst us.

This is quickly becoming my favourite podcast. A lot of them _profess_ to have open dialogue from all sides but actually often don't. You really do come up with the goods! I remember reading the Tao of Physics when I was a teenager, it was huge for me back then. Thank you so much guys

Enlightening and insightful discussion with Fritjof Capra - I've read his books and done his course and still he imparts so much clear grounded insight. This was a very informing talk.

Dr. Schermer, you're questions and willingness to listen-- and push back gently when required--are a high scientific art form (yes I said that). Even you're friend SJ Gould, would've paused to ponder (I refer to his non overlapping magisteria) how you brilliantly tiptoe in a firm direction, between art, science and spirit. In simple English "You and your podcast r da bomb". Wish I had some bucks to support u.

At 25 min down memory road, factually Prof Capra nobody can die of a "psychedelic overdose" - it can't and has never happened. You are mistaking other drugs. Other than that misremembered 50 year old piece of information, a very good talk, thank you. D.A., J.D., NYC

Good grief that was a painful introduction. You said that you didn't know why some people might not be into the courses you were talking about, well, let me try to clarify it for you - Because they don't have to be. Not everyone has to be interested in exactly the same things that you are interested in. Now I am going to do my best to listen to Fritjof's input into this podcast, and completely zone out when you start to speak.

Michael no one in MMT is suggesting that unlimited spending is possible. Stephanie Kelton stresses in her book that the issue of inflation has not been dealt with. Inflation occurs when demand & money increases beyond supply. Case in point - inject money into Wall St and share prices increase - that’s inflation but the shareholders think that‘s a good thing. Regarding the stock market increasing at the rates you mentioned I remind you of Prof Al Bartlett’s observation “the greatest human shortcoming is our inability to understand the exponential function”.

@cqxmrvcoyI don’t buy your conclusion. The real problem is interest on money. MMT simply makes the obvious conclusion that if an economy has the resources and the capability of doing a job that is of value to the economy then the money required to do that job can be printed. Simple as that really.

*Wow! Fritjof CAPRA! (82 now!) (Michael SHERMER!) This gentleman has experienced a "Bird's Eye View" -- of the world's societies via the ''bounce'' as 'he' has traversed the WESTERN WORLD! *(Great AUTHOR! I am SURE!) Thank YOU! **Peace .. Capra's books were important to me when I was a teenager. so I don't wish to be uncharitable. However, these idealistic advocates of renewables NEVER, EVER mention batteries. "Yay, sunlight is free!", they declare, and then completely ignore the difficulties, and horrors of battery construction and disposal, and the mining for rare metals used in their construction. One has to ask; ideology, or ignorance?

Interesting that he states that temperature follows Co2 levels while in reality, historically it is the other way around. Ie, the consensus of which they talk about has been politicized. The experts have come from one organization, the IPCC who determines who can take part and who cant. The inner group collects the data and decides what comes out. Giving the fact that that group has come out with policy recommendations for governments prior to the full report in 2022 in order to give Cop21 some ammo means it is an activist approach. Some well placed scientist have highlighted some elements within the diverse investigative scientist community who do not share the high certainty of the activists within the inner circle. So yes, the consensus is that 95% of the inner IPCC circle agree...with themselves and their models. Do you see what i mean?

Someday we will have to implement “The Unique “. Max Stirner. “The Unique and Its Property “,1844/2017 Landstreicher translation. A proper physics as well. “The Final Theory: Rethinking Our Scientific Legacy “, Mark McCutcheon. Till then this vacuous “ philosophy “ will obtain. So sad.

"Liberals are very broadminded:they are always willing to give careful consideration to both sides of the same side" "Socialism in general has record of failure so blatant that only an intellectual could ignore or evade it" Thomas Sowell Capra would be much better off sticking to physics and science, then talking politics and economics and being a mouthpiece for Frankfurt school,Marcuse and Marx

If video platforms such as KZread had existed during the seventies, I would have been able to watch Fritjof Capra, and I probably would not have read his book, in spite of the interesting title. It would have saved me a lot of time and the reading of quite a number of books besides The Tao of Physics. A half hour interview would have been enough to realize that this person didn't have my interest. Luckily we now have many such opportunities, and that's why I will never read a book by Michael Shermer either! During the first few minutes alone Shermer already show himself as the exact opposite of what he pretends to be, with his nonsense about "scientific consensus among experts", and his beliefs in the "man made climate change", as well as his apparent acceptance of the homosexual agenda and feminism as some kind of universal values. Shermer is a conformist, a guardian of the establishment, and not a real skeptic at all. That being said, he is still moderately useful as a debunker of obvious quacks such as Graham Hancock and Deepak Chopra.

I don’t want this global system he’s talking about and if he’s honest, he wouldn’t want it either (for himself and family). Sounds like he’s just wanting to even out the wealth from first world countries to third world countries and make the entire globe a second world system lol. I’m sure he’s planning on the folks like himself to be the rulers over this new system, he surly isn’t planning on giving up his personal wealth and status.

The moment someone comes with a system that rallies all the third world to take the wealth from the first, people will jump on it, but without overwhelming force, it won't work. But rest assured, it is a matter of time, as the first world ages and weakens. IMO some combination Islam and Marxist principles will be able to do it, but I'm just one guy.

The people who promote these group based, totalitarian systems always see themselves as part of the ruling caste. They never think it’s them who will end up on collective farms or production lines.
