I'm a dog mom to an older dog and my humble suggestion is to just let him enjoy his garden in his old age and let him potter about to his liking, you are an excellent dog dad and I adore Sherpa he is a precious boy ❤

Jamie. I owned a 48 year old donkey. He became so troubled with arthritis that he struggled to get up. I decided to call a holistic vet that gave him supplements and acupuncture. It worked wonders. Maybe you could go see one and get their opinion. Linda

Im 60 with hip arthritis old grannies much more senior than me walk quicker than me round a supermarket. I choose to avoid massive stores and shop in Lidlington and aldi. I dont blame sherpa just wanting to laze around his beautiful garden. 😂

You’re a busy man and I can tell you enjoy having something to do or work on! But as someone who’s said a hard goodbye to a senior dog before, I suggest you slow down alongside him more often. Sherpa dedicated himself to accompanying you in adventures and I think it would be so nice for you to show him that you’re accompanying him in his retirement. Lay down next to him on the grass every now and then, hug him and give him pats, let go of the camera (or use a tripod) and just be with him. ❤ i’m sure it will mean a lot to him.

I agree 100 % spend alot of time with him. If he wants to lay on the grass lay with him. I lost my 14 year husky 2 years ago and I am so glad I just spent time doing nothing with her except giving hugs and love. ❤❤❤❤

It's hard watching our best friends grow old. Monitor his weight, but if he is eating,drinking, peeing and pooping, just let him be. He loves you and his garden. That's all he needs and wants. My heart is with you both.

​​​​​Both you & Sherpa are one in a million. You both look after & care about each other more than some pet owners. Yes, he is getting older but, as long as he is eating, taking treats/meds and getting some exercise (even if it is in his garden or short road trips) than I wouldn't worry to much. If he continues to lose more weight or clearly is in more pain than you may need a Vet visit. He is enjoying his Golden Years and appreciates everything you do for him, including providing a beautiful garden to enjoy. It’s very hard seeing your beloved pet companion getting older sending you both love and strength

We lost our beloved Sheltie at 15 years and 8 months. Once he turned 14, he went through what Sherpa is going through now. You have done all that is humanly possible for your amazing dog. Just make sure he's comfortable and knows how much he is cherished by you and his many fans.

Jamie, I know you’re worried about Sherpa-we all are. But don’t neglect your health! You shouldn’t be having frequent nosebleeds. Could I humbly suggest you have your doctor check your blood pressure? You’re an excellent dog dad, but don’t forget Sherpa needs you to be healthy! Sending love and hugs for you both.

It happened like this with all of mine. They got more and more picky about food-I eventually just fed them whatever they wanted (that was healthy) and they ate what they wanted. As we creatures get older and slow down it’s our biological destiny to eat less and do less to conserve our energy. You have set his life up so beautifully, Jamie, for him to enjoy whatever time he has left-may it be a very long time! My heart breaks for you as you try to figure out how to make his life perfect-we all try to do just that. You succeed better than most. We love you for it. We love Sherpa like he’s our own as well, so we are with you in this and all things. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

Jamie my thoughts and prayers are with you and sherpa.i would be concerned if he wasn't eating at all and he was in constant pain.

Oh this is hard to watch. I couldn't love him more if he were my own. I wish I could give you a big hug Jamie. It breaks my heart you're going through this. I will say a prayer everyday he keeps going strong for a long time.

I have ended up with several senior dogs due to various circumstances. I have also had senior horses. They bring so much joy and are so very special. However, it is hard as our beloved pets slow down and become more picky about their food. That said, Sherpa would not ask for a better dad or a better home. He adores every inch of the garden, and especially his Sherpa Shed where he can enjoy the outdoors out of the rain or in the shade. Just keep doing what you're doing, and most important as you know is just to enjoy this precious time. Although we do not know you personally, we are here for you. If you see any negative comments in here - do NOT read them. Some people are just snakes. You are doing everything exactly the right way for you and Sherpa. The two of you and your family are the only ones who count❤🙏✝️

Let him rest, Nevermind if the walks are curtailed. As an elderly person myself, I can’t be bothered some days with anything. The next day I’m up for a trip out, Sherpa probably feels the same. It will be swings and roundabouts, play each day by ear. He’ll tell you when he needs rest. Take care both of you ❤

Jamie, it’s just time to give him some convalescent care. Let him rest in the sun and enjoy outside. No more weekend adventures. Shara is officially retired to the garden. Let him rest when he wants to rest, eat when he wants to eat poop when he needs to poop. When those things stop happening is when you have to face those hard decisions. God bless you. Its always hard to watch a beloved pup get older

Jamie, like many others here, I have had, loved and lost a number of great pups over my 79 years. I, like you, have a large fenced in yard (2+ acres) with my home. My huskies and malamutes all had liver issues in their old age. My Vet believed in quality over quantity. When they reached 11 years old( which is quite old for these breeds) we stopped worrying about lab tests. We switched to "a what makes them happy" program. Fed good food, vitamins and supplements for mobility and daily slow leashed walks for consistent mobility exercise. My last Malamute lived to be 14 plus yrs old. One night she went to sleep and crossed the rainbow bridge peacefully and I am sure with joy. I know that I will see all of my dogs and cats one day. I have followed you and Sherpa for 3 years and love your content. You both have the perfect home now. Love and prayers from middle Tennessee.

The fact that Sherpa still has an appetite is a very good sign! 👍

My angel bear is a senior dog now. He lost 4 lbs. He S always been fit not overweight. The vet wasn't concerned, he said its common for senior dogs to lose weight. Easier on their joints. Angel bear has a good appetite. Sometimes they have an off day. If he s eating the soft food and not kibble I'd look at that tooth again. Hope the sweet boy is OK, luv him bunches🩵🌞💙🐺🤗

Excatly, and if he likes portions of good wet food, some snackies and less kibble, its fine as long as he is still eating and especially drinks enough water. My seniors have lost some weight and the snackis suddenly fills them more than usual as they dont run around and use as much energy as before, so appetite also slows down...I would get teeth checked and see if he poops/how it looks when he goes to check if it is "healthy " looking and not an indication of either an upset tummy or blocked bowels..Sorry, not a polite subject,but I work in a hospital and what works for humans amazingly sometimes works for doggos. Try giving him some skyr /yoghurt with pro biotics to soothe his tummy if need be and not fat free as he doesn't need to loose weight.

Ring your vet and tell them how much weight Sherpa has lost. If it exceeds a certain amount there may be cause for concern. Let the Vet know and keep them informed.

He has lost about 13% of his body weight. In human medicine we have great concerns about any rapid weight loss. At the very least I would do a panel of blood tests, the results will dictate what steps to take next. Simply being old is not a death sentence.

Wouldn’t expect an elderly dog to be all energetic and ready for adventure. Just chilling at home seems like the natural thing.

It’s the course of life for us all.. we all get older as each day passes and old age ailments creep on us all 😅 Sherpa is a beautiful furbaby and your doing everything possible to keep him happy and comfortable .. trial and error buddy x he loves his big garden maybe play with him a bit more, throw treats for him etc. Google things to do with an older dog. Regarding his weight I’d ring the vet for advice to put your mind at rest.. Give him lots of cuddles and attention and let him do wat he enjoys xxx ❤

Jamie, I'm old. I struggle to get up from my chair. I need a cane to walk. Going places wears me out. My back hurts all the time and sometimes I just eat whatever I like rather than cooking what I should. (Unfortunately, I haven't lost weight.😮) This is old age for humans and for dogs, too. You give Sherpa a wonderful life for an elderly dog, who is aging in comfort, in his garden, with the occasional Jeep ride.😊❤

An old dog losing weight could be a sign of something underlying. My old dog started losing weight and was slowing down. But he was eating normally and acting normal, and all his lab work came back looking just fine. Then 3 days later he died from cancer. He had a tumor in his lung that ended up making his lung collapse and by the time we were able to get help, it was too late and i had to make the difficult decision to let him go. He was my whole world, and I still miss him every day.

I had a similar experience. By the time I requested an xray for her lack of eating, we found a large tumor in her abdomen and the ultrasound showed the liver and pancreas wrapped by it. She seemed fine for week and then suddenly went downhill fast. I had to help her go at the vet. I miss her everyday. But there was no warning until the end.

Maybe he just doesn’t need so much in his dish, we all tend to eat a bit less as we get older. 🐾🐾 He looks happy in his garden. 🐾🐾💙

Thank you so much for putting a smile on Jamie's face - he did need cheering up, I think! (And I would also have all the mixed feelings in the same situation.) Humor is a very healing thing!

Although Sherpa is slowing down he still looks happy, he still smiles, he enjoys his house, and he enjoys his yard immensely. Sherpa is very loved and has been cared for, we wish every dog could be so lucky. Blessings from Oklahoma.

It's always difficult seeing your pet not feeling well and getting older. All you can do is love him every day and let him do whatever he wants. You both will be in my prayers.

Hug him and cuddle him! Give him the food he likes and many treats. We don't want him to be in pain but old age needs no medical treatment, just love.

He's 13, weight loss is a concern if there isn't a clear cut reason. Old age truly does ravage the body. But Sherpa is greatly loved. No one can ever deny that. He'll have his up and down days. But he'll have them with you, Jamie. He knows he's a lucky dog. ❤❤

Just doing your best to make him comfortable. It’s just as it seems to be age hitting him in his days and all and wouldn’t be surprised if he just wants to chill, he’s living his best life in that garden. Bless ole Sherpa.

Get your nose bleeds checked out! If you are having them that frequently, there can be underlying issues. If you get seriously sick, that’s going to cause issues for Sherpa. No one can do any better for Sherpa than you have. I’m 70 and grew up with dogs and raised and trained my own since I was 23. They were big dogs (typically 50-70 pounds) and the longest I had one of them live was a female who made it to 14. (Average age for the breed is 10-12 years). Dogs hide their condition. You have done more to stay on top of all possibilities than I’ve done and I do a lot. Know you and Sherpa are in my prayers.🙏❤️🙏

Jamie see the vet. That's a lot of weight. Bloodwork. Could be anything but it's definitely something. At his age it could be thyroid, diabetes, the bad C word, but the point is he cannot keep losing weight. The slowing down is probably a part of whatever is going on. It is not the worst day, it is just the beginning of even worse days, when you miss him, when you wonder if you did rhe right thing, when you're sure you didn't do the right thing. It is just the beginning of a lot of worse days, some worse than others.

Jamie With love and respect as a fellow animal lover who has seen my share of dogs and cats to their final rest. Sherpa is 13. He's not lazy he is winding down. If it helps think of him as a man who's very old. Dont ask an old dog to do anything you wouldnt ask your old grandfather to do. Their hearing, eyesight, appetite, and body are all winding down. You don't enjoy road trips, long walks , just a short walk around the garden or to sit in the sun. And long deep sleeps. There is nothing to do about it that you have overlooked. No dog has ever been more loved and cared for. He is loved, happy and has everything he needs Jamie, and just one more thing; he needs you and all of us to accept and understand that.

We had the same problem with our huskies and Malamute when they got older. It's hard to watch them struggling when they're older. Hopefully, he improves good luck

Sherpa just wants to hang in his garden with his Dad and enjoy his senior days. Maybe change his food a bit. I started making my girls' food pretty much in to a soup, so it was easier for her to eat. She started gaining weight and eating all her food. This has led to her being more active again

Jamie, I encourage you to not overthink the wonderful care you give to your fur baby. Realize you are doing everything you can. I know this is easier said than done because in your head you think, "there must be something else". Its incredibly hard to understand there isn't. Even we humans slow down as we age. We aren't exerting ourselves as we once did, our caloric intake is less. Whether dog or human, we look for love and support in latter years. You are giving both in abundance to Sherpa.

You have beautiful garden let him enjoy it.

Don't forget that Sherpa has dangerously high liver enzymes, which can put him off his food

as long as he not in to much pain let him rest at home more, he is a happy boy he got a full life you given each other so much.

Jamie, we get creaky when we get old. Good days and bad days. Just continue to love him and thank God for every minute he stays with you.

It's like watching my old rottie getting old again Jamie. Just let him enjoy his garden, he is in the best place for him. I went through exactly what your doing, changing food, hand feeding her chicken. Lots of pain relief to make her as comfortably as possible. He will have good days and bad days. He still seems very happy in his garden that's all that matters

My Roxy gal is 16 years and 5 months, she is very much like Sherpa that wants to sleep alot, slow movements, bad breath and not that much into food but still happy. My advise is enjoy every day that he is still there, love him in abundance and let him do what makes him happy.. A very tough and difficult time and sometimes you feel so helpless. Jamie sending you and Sherpa big hugs..

It’s awful that animals are only here for a short time. We need to love and cherish them while we have them. They impact our lives so much. All the best to you Jamie and Sherpa ❤

I was thinking the same. I soak the dry dog food for my two older greyhounds (greyhounds are supposed to only eat soaked dry food) and my Rosie had 13 teeth extracted in all. I mix can food and vegetables and it's all soft and she has no problems eating it.

My heart goes out to you and sweet Sherpa. I'm going through the exact same thing right now with my sweet boy, Biscuit, it's heart breaking. He's 14, diabetic, the last few months the weight has been declining, he's picky with his food. The veterinarian told me to just keep him comfortable, happy. I couldn't even schedule his annual check up, they told me he was end of life, a blow to the heart. I'm praying for you and Sherpa, you're in my heart and thoughts daily. ❤🙏🐾

Since Sherpa is older and on more meds, he may not have the same taste. I had to cook all my old boys meals, and he ate a lot of cookies. He lost weight, too, but lived to age 15. Rested more, playing once a day and walkies just weren’t as often. Your care for Sherpa is fantastic! It is frustrating. Winston had a wonky leg too. Was stiff when he woke up. A few days he got zoomies again! Sometimes it is just age… I’d wish every pup had the lovely home and love you’ve provided Sherpa. Bless you both.

So Sherps has lost a littlex weight & I see your concerned so call the vet & take him in. You are right he does seem to be struggling on his back legs more. Could this be about his teeth? Just a little suggestion. I'm absolutely sure you've thought about that. You know Sherpa better than any of us keyboard family from around the world. Sherpa is your "heart" dog for sure. Definitely get the weight loss checked out especially if he isn't eating. I wish you both good health. Maybe he just wants some different food.

Its the hardest part of being a dog owner seeing them slow down. Let him enjoy the garden hes happy there. Sending both of you love and hugs ❤❤❤❤. He could be in pain

Agreed, we should all commend Jamie for his bravery. I don't think I'd be able to show such vulnerabilities online.

Jamie I know it's so hard to see him age. I have watched my family of precious ones age and need gentle care too like you give Sherpa.🥰 There is a point when the best thing for Sherpa is to let him relax rest sleep and enjoy your precious time together, in a new way. Love to Sherpa and hugs to you. ❤❤

My dog had the same symptoms due to old age. Weak hind legs, hardly standing up (eventually not able to), loosing weight etc. Poor Sherps, wish him very best🩷

Back left leg looks a bit iffy, but he’s old for his breed, he’s happy at home and meeting his friends. He’s a a grumpy old dog, enjoying his old age! You’re right, the move has been brilliant for him compared to the caravan. He’ll be doing a fair mileage on perimeter patrols!

Yes, that and the lower back near the hips looks a bit like something is not comfortable. It may be worth poking him a little bit gently and see if the two sides feel the same. He may have slept with the leg bent funny.

He was looking tired the last few days,but today he is smiling when he got home,he is just getting older,I know its sad,but we all love him,take care.😍😍

It breaks my heart to see Sherpa struggling. I’m in same boat Sweetheart old age is not much fun. Jamie you give Sherpa a wonderful life. And Arthritis could be a problem. Just be with your boy. All he'll want is to know you're around, being there for him. Nothing else matters. It's you and him. Treasure that.

I already told you in a different comment and don't know if you read it. But he is an old dig. Let him have his old age in his garden en home. I know not very exciting to vlog but I saw it with my dog. When she turned 16 she slept almost all her days until she passes a few mobth ago. She became 18. But the last 2 years she only wants her garden and her own home. She was very happy... sometimes she ate a lot and sometimes she could leave it for a week... but not changing the routine... so I think he is happy in his garden. And wants his last years being at ease in his own environment. That's what old dogs do. And yes he is walking like an old dog. If you aren't sure go to the vet. But I think he did the right thing by buying him his beautiful garden. He is happy... at home... ❤

I had a Labrador mix, quite large. She made it to 15 years. I did take her to hydro for a few years as she got older. But I eventually saw she was experiencing more back leg pain after the treatment. I stopped the hydro. My Lulu would have good days and bad. She was a pleasure in my life. She passed away in 2019, still miss her. God bless you guys. Jan

I think Sherpa has earned lots of time to relax in his beautiful garden with his Dad. Jamie, you’ve earned some time hanging out in the garden with the bestest boy too! 🐾❤️🐾 My Zinnie Kitty is 15yrs old & he’s beginning to change his routine a bit as well. He just wants to be with us all the time & get lots of attention. He’s going through some weight loss & has become super finicky with his food as well. We just keep trying to keep him happy & give him what he wants. He deserves it.

Don't forget your own health. May be stress, may be sinuses.🤷‍♀️Don't let it go too long. Sherpa is a healthy boy for his age but some issues can't be avoided. You are the best care-dad he could ever want. 🤗🐺 Don't worry yourself sick. Okay?! Bless you both. 🙏💙 🐺🧔💙🤟

Jamie you will just have to keep an eye on our Sherpa I know you get worried just keep checking his weight but remember you don’t give him as much treats as you used to and Sherpa might just want to stay in his garden which he loves Jamie but just keep an eye on the beautiful Sherpa big hugs to you both.🐾🐾🐾❤️❤️❤️

Prayers for you both. It’s hard watching them slow way down when they get older.

The fact that hes still eating and drinking is a good sign. Yes he is slowing down quite a lot, but he walked around the garden quite well for his age.Losing some weight as you say will help his joints,too many older dogs are overweight and struggle with their joints. I know you will do your best for him and it is hard watching him ageing

Remember, if he doesn’t have an exercise day ~ he won’t have the same appetite … you are doing everything right. Sherpa can just have good days and bad days , like everyone at times xx hugs to you and sweet sweet Sherpa

1) Give him his old food for 3 nights to see if he eats all of that, then go back to the new food to see if he eats only half of it again. That will either confirm your thought, or rule it out. 2) You may be giving him too many treats during the day, so he has lost some appetite. 3) Is the weather hot? That can affect his appetite. 4) He may have lost some appetite because he is not as active as he used to be, which is normal. I have noticed in some recent videos that his back legs gave out from under him a bit, which reminds me of what happened to Phil, sadly. Talk to your vet about that.

It may be time that everyone of his friends come to visit him in his garden. It’s hard and it’s just retirement time for him. I think he loves you and his garden. It stinks getting old, but you have given him a good life and will continue to. Enjoy you both so much! ❤❤

it's just a good pup getting old pray for the best prepare for the worst I enjoyed my years of watching him go around and meet people he's a good boy :)

Jamie, you are the best dog dad. I turned 80 last November, and trust me we all slow down in old age. And yes, we fall asleep in our recliners quite often. Some of us lose weight also. What I'm saying is that dogs are the same way when they get older. We all slow down and most of us seniors have arthritis too. I had to have a knee replacement because of it and have more arthritis in a lot of body parts. Sherpa has arthritis and maybe is back rear left leg is sore today. Each day is different when you are older, but you just keep trucking along, just like Sherpa. He is supremely happy in his garden, it's his happy place to be in his old age. I am a bit concerned about your nose bleeds where you are having them frequently. Check your blood pressure!!!!--- Please Jamie. You have been concerned about Sherpa lately and his problems, and it could have an affect on your blood pressure. Take care of yourself so you can take care of Sherpa.

He is getting old Jamie. My Siberian Huskey was 17.5 when she passed and that was so unusual for that breed. Let him enjoy his twilight years in his beautiful garden with you. Thats his best life!! Old dogs don't metabolize their calories like younger dogs. Its to be expected at his age.

He's slowing down. We all do. Let him rest at home and stop all the visits and walks. He's happiest at home with you.

I recall reading an article about ageing cats and how their world gradually becomes smaller until they alternate between bed, food bowls and litter tray, plus a comfy lap to snuggle in. With my dogs (all big breeds) they slowed right down as they got older, wanted to stay near me instead of running off to play when out for walks and became more picky about their food. Jamie, you are very good at reading Sherpy's body language and responding accordingly. His happy place is pottering in his garden, keeping an eye on your DIYing and reminding you when it's treat time. I know that you love him very much, so just take each day as it comes and continue to enjoy one another's company. Sending you both lots of love and big hugs

Hi Jamie...you know what, just like humans as we age we eat less & move much slower. I believe based on my husky as he aged (16 loving yrs) & as a caregiver to my dad (who btw lived to 102), it's just Sherpa nornal aging. He's extremely well cared for & the less weight may very well be due to just eating less because of his tooth. Try not to worry too much & keep doing what you're doing;; your care for him is absolutely on track as a wonderful caregiver🤗 ....✌️💖🥰🙏

Have Sherpa in my prayers. I know he is your baby. I bet he loves his yard. Have to keep him moving. 🙏🙏🙏

As with older dogs little and often small meals and maybe the warmer months may give him some respite from damp weather.. He's doing okay for his age and hope for every day to be a good one for Sherpa and You..x❤
