I'm so disgusted with the American legal system about child support. I think that if the man signs the birth certificate under the presumptive idea that he is the father, and he isn't, I don't think that the man should be held accountable for financial assistance (child support). If he's been paying for a child that isn't his, he should be reimbursed, and the mother charged for providing false information.

Kids get jealous when a parent hook up with someone new and start taking care of the stepchild, etc. She had to broke in spirit to be so young and sleeping around like that. I agree; also they should have mandatory DNA testing with every birth. However, when he signed, he assumed the financial responsibility for the child; so I think the law allows this to protect the children who are innocent, so they get financial support regardless of paternity or relationship between the man and mother. So when the man gets upset with the woman he cannot remove himself from the child. What they should allow is for the man to sue the mother for falsifying information. On another note: This can go either way in another situation, because as you know, if the father has the kids the majority of the time (ex legal and/or residential custody), the mother will need to pay the man for support

The law is evil and paternity tests need to be mandatory if a woman can have a man sign a birth certificate under false pretenses and then six months after the fact admit the child may not be his. This woman is being nonchalant about it while the man could go to jail probably because there is no penalty for paternity fraud. To think 1 in 3 men and possibly more are going through this without any real recourse. Shame on our system for allowing women to abuse innocent men this way

That "you're family at the end of the day" is used so often now to shut people down and bulldoze over feelings that make them so uncomfortable. He's legally his father even though he's not biologically his father, that's why. When you sign the birth certificate you're basically signing a contract saying you will be legally responsible for that child including paying for that child. They make it very clear that a man should not sign a birth certificate if they have any doubt they aren't the father which is why even if a DNA test is done afterwords proving a man is not the father, he has to petition the court to be removed from the birth certificate. He would have to prove that the mother lied to him and made him believe he was the father and even then they don't always judge in the man's favor. This is why if a man even has the slightest bit of doubt, he should not sign the birth certificate and ask for a DNA test. There's a very good chance that man will be stuck paying that back child support due to the fact that he knew months after the child was born that he may not be the father and didn't pursue a DNA test right away. Instead he did nothing about it for 20 some years. The woman is definitely at fault for lying to him but he's also at fault for not doing something sooner. He never would have incurred such a high balance in back child support had he taken care of this immediately when he found out there was doubt that he was the father.

Why would the state pay to find a father when another man already accepted legal responsibility for the child? It's the legal father's responsibility to hire a lawyer, pay for the paternity tests, pay for the courts and then sue the mother to recoup his money. It shouldn't be the taxpayer's responsibility to cover those costs. It's a personal matter and as far as the State is concerned it isn't their problem at all. They just work within the law to enforce the law.
