I’m tall. Most of the people in my family are tall. Does that mean my son will be tall? Turns out the inheritance of height is a lot more complicated than we thought. Scientists know that nature (genes) and nurture (environment) both play a role, but after more than a century of questions, we’re only just now starting to get some answers

I was 5'3 at 15. I read somewhere that most guys only grow 2 inches after their 15th birthday, so I accepted my fate of being 5'5. Turns out I was a late bloomer and am now a little over 6'0 tall and am still growing even though I'm going to be turning 20 this year. Stay strong short guys, you might be one of the rare cases 🙏

I'm an adult male and 5'6. However, I'm not unaffected by my short stature. Yes, gaining a few extra inches would be cool but on the contrary I can easily snuggle into tight spaces, shop into teen's sections, have ample flight legroom and so on. Yes, I've been bullied for my height but I just realized that there are somethings that we can't change and some people will always point it out, no matter how obvious it is. So short guys out there, don't be afraid, work hard and attain success so that people no more lookout for your height.

I've always thought of genes as a min/max parameter and nurture to be the determining factor for the end result. Your genes have a set path of growth no matter your lifestyle but poor care makes your body underdevelop or underperform. You might be genetically predisposed to easily bulk up and become fit but poor habits and diet will only ensure it won't happen. Can't grow something without the proper nutrition and care. That's why people tend to have stunted growth. Injuries also can affect your growth for better and worse, like those bone extension surgeries where they cut then space and brace it to force your bones to heal that way. Or it can permanently disfigure.

Very true that mostly siblings are similar height, but often, parents are also similar heights. Let’s take the first 3 in line in the British royal family as well as spouses. William, Prince of Wales, is 6 foot 3 and wife Catherine is 5 foot 9. Their 9 year old son, second in line, is currently around 5 foot 3. Very tall for a 9 year old. And little sister Charlotte, 7 years old, is around 4 foot 9 - 11, which is also very tall for age. Both parents are tall. And the Duke of Sussex, William’s brother is 6 feet tall as well. And the king is 5 foot 10, and so is the late Princess Diana. But then, the late Queen was 5 foot 3. So, sometimes, it’s passed down through parents, others, not.

It is proven, through studies such as one done by NCBI, that maternal height (height from the mother) influences the height of a child at birth, stunting at 2 years of age and stunting at adult height. The reason for the initial influence at birth is due to maternal physical constraints on offspring growth in utero. This is because even with genetics aside (which plays a large part), shorter women have reduced protein and energy stores, smaller reproductive organ sizes and a more limited room for fetal development - influencing fetal growth via the placenta and infant growth through beast milk quantity. So straight out of the gate, birth from a short mother causes the odds to shift closer to the favor of shortness in children and places a lower glass ceiling on possibilities of escaping this at a later stage (after 2+ years) and after the child reaches adulthood (18 years).

After that I moved out for the studies and he stayed back. He used to take proper diet where as I got hung on junk food, stopped playing sports entirely etc. He ended up being 6'2. My height and my biological age, used to be great till class 5th, where I had friends to play outside with, and being active in sports. But then after 5th grade, I switched homes. There I had no friends to go out and play with, but I still was in sports in my school. But sports wasnt played everyday, and only for 1 hr per period, we had 2 periods in a week. So after a while when I reached 7th class. I could see the differences in myself and my friends in school. They still continued to grow, didnt have "puberty acne". But for me I didnt grow as fast as they were growing, and I started to have puberty acne already, their meat intake was also better than me, because my mom wouldnt allow us to bring meat to the house. So yeah, I think height does depends on how fast you age, and your protein intake, and your physical activity.

idk bruh so many people in the comments here seem insecure about their height while I’m just here chilling at 5’7, not tall, not too short(pretty short though), but honestly I’m fine with my height, even if I stay this height for the rest of my life, I’d be perfectly ok with that, height usually isn’t going to cause you as much mental strife as you make it seem, only causing you stress if you give it so much attention, but honestly, the height you’re at right now is fine, so I don’t think you should worry about that and maybe worry about taxes or something idk. TL;DR: I think you should be accepting of your height, if you aren’t and are worried you might be stuck at your current height, then that’s ok too, just don’t stress over it so much because, to put it bluntly, you shouldn’t stress over things you can control.

I'm almost 5'11 and my mom is only 5'5 and my Dad is about 5'11. I'm a lot taller than my sister too. I think that a lot of my height came from my diet instead of genetics. I've always been a meat & potatoes type person, preferring savory food over sweet. I think he's onto something when he says the higher protein makes people taller. I drank a lot of milk and ate a lot of eggs, steak and chicken growing up. I'm sure that helped with my height.

Your height is purely genetic bro, your mother and your father are practically height equivalents, with your mother being an inch shorter (she would be 5'10 as a man). So do the average, 5'10 your mother, 5'11 your father, 5'10 and 1/2. You are basically exactly your target height.

There is a photo of her in her wed dress and Imao it's copy paste, one of her children (my aunt-grandmother) is often mesmerized and in daze when I visit. I always pictured him as medium height, like 5'8" to 5'10". Definitly didn't think he'd be taller then my 6' 190lb ass. I guess now i have to look up to him in more ways then one.

It's Okay To Be Smart Nor I, but the genetics are pretty interesting, from what I have read. For example, there is an important gene on the X chromosome, but autosomal genes are also involved. This complexity explains, for example, why Patrick Stewart and Bruce Willis balded at different ages.

male pattern baldness*+Josh* (and i don't have it, just to be clear) i thought the other major factor was the presence of high/higher male hormones, isn't it so. like my kid cousin, whom i've literally cared for back when he was an infant.. started looking like you avataar (receding hairline) when in his twenties and now also has thinning at the crown. i've seen similar things happen to other cousin/friends who are fools who ingest all kinds of excrement powders and shakes in the name of 'gym' 'body building'. although i've a fairly high libido drive, since i haven't yet started loosing as much hair..i assumed i've lower testosterone/ then again, i've (initially family, then by choice) refined white flour >> maida en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maida_flour and not into too much snacks, junk food. obviously not a pizza burger guy, having been a desi at heart even when not in the subcontinent. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/desi fairly good food habits, being blessed with (born in) a decent home/family that provided for us, managing stress well and keeping it low.. apart from lifestyle choices (say: no meat/fish eggs, being teetotaller) too helped i think (in only having grey hair and not yet male pattern baldness).

My moms brother is like 6'4, my maternal grandfather is 6'4 as well my mom is 5'6, my sister is 5'7 and I'm 5'7 my dad however was 5'7 but his family has taller people as well, As a kid I had asthma and would vomit a lot when drinking hot milk in the morning and would be a picky eater/not eat much... honestly I think that's the biggest reason I'm also 5'7, not eating well enough, as soon as I became a teenager (15) my appetite grew a lot and I started growing (I was much smaller till I was 15) but of course there's an age limit on growth, idk if it's correlated or not but sorta interesting.

My Mom is 5'7.5" and my bio dad is 5'7", me and my sibling are both shorter. I'm 5'6" and my sibling is 5'5". My Bio dad had two other kids with my step mom who is 5'4". My half siblings are young now, but I do wonder how tall they'll be. My assumption is that they'll be short since both sides of their family has some REALLY short people. But it could be that they turn out to be taller than me and my full sibling because of the simple fact that they are growing up in a much healthier environment then us two ever did. It's certainly going to be interesting to see once they're older.

One thing I often notice is that the tallest people in many communities are generally of African descent, I'd say over half the guys in my school that are over 6' are black. However, on average, I usually notice a more even distribution, with people of European and African descent generally being a bit taller than Asians and Hispanics. Since humanity originated in Africa, it is the continent with the most genetic diversity to this day, so even though the tallest people in many communities like a school are black, the shortest people often are too(although certain Asian people like Filipinos are very short as well usually)

I'm Australian and I was an adhd child so my parents gave up on forcing vegetables down my throat pretty quickly as I would flip my lid. So pretty much a nutritious diet of vegemite on toast 4 pieces for breakfast and a frozen microwave meat pie or 2 for lunch and dinner smothered in tomato sauce. So pretty much my diet was awful and had no nutritious value but by 10 years old I was eating evrything i could get my hands on pretty much eating like 5000 calories per day to accommodate the growth I was going to acquire. Pretty much I think it was genetic I have a long line of people in my family ranging from 6'2 to 7'.
