A look at how bad Grizzlies number 2 pick Hasheem Thabeet actually was. Will he go down as the biggest bust of all time?

You know, hearing stories like Hasheem and Darko, it’s nice to know that even though not much could’ve gone worse as far as their careers went, they still managed to find their place in life and be happy with it.

Bro got drafted to a team that already had a starting big and got 13 mins 13 mins and had 1.3 blocks a game & Marc Gasol avg 35 mins n 1.6 blocks a game. Any front office that knew basketball would know he’s not offense minded and can give you an easy 15 rbs & 4 blocks easy. And if Golden stat would have traded for him that would have pilled his full potential out and we wouldn’t be having this convo.
The fact he flopped but kept trying and trying and when he couldn’t get up he just said he was happy with what he had achieved is so inspirational

I'm a Thunder fan and when Hasheem was in OKC he was a great part of the team. He was one of the fan favorites. He wasn't a great player but he gave a lot of effort and brought a lot of enthusiasm. He was the kind of guy that you want kids to look up to!
He is such a nice guy though! Humble and grateful for everything he has and the opportunities he was given. You really feel for the guy because he worked his ass off to prove himself but he is a victim of timing and how the league is and it breaks the heart but when you see he made overr 16 million you feel better about it. Did meet him Memphis and was a really nice guy even held the door open for me and wished me a good day super rare for a #2 pick right out of the gate. Because of that I always pulled for him. I have a signed rookie card and it's value is $8 but to me I wouldn't take $800 for it because I love telling the story of how and when I got it!
I like hearing that Thabeet turned out fine and gets to help his family and others now with the resources he acquired. But mannnnn that was a swing and a miss that drastically lowered the potential ceiling for the grit n grind grizzlies .
You’re spot on about the timing. So many decent big men are not in the league because of the style. It’s all 3 and drives. There’s a lot of skill being lost in basketball. No post up, no midrange. DeMar, KD, and Kyrie are the midrange guys and you can see how hard it is to guard them.

Spot on! I was thinking same thing. Also, Hakeem Olajuwon started at around 16 but he was "teachable/trainable", and could follow instructions and get better as he played. Unlike Thabit, who just not good enough and couldn't progress to reach performance of other players.
Good to see Rob Dyrdek talking basketball! Refreshing!
I remember how everybody knew thabeet wasn't good enough for the pick he was at but draft politics made it to where the grizzlies had no choice but to get him.Imagine if the grizzlies got Derozan or Harden along with already having Gasol,Randolph,Gay,Conley n probably still got Tony Allen they woulda been serious contenders for years
Maybe he would've been more successful in soccer but since he's trying to help others to get out of poverty and learn basketball, I should say going to the NBA is a good choice for him

thanks for the fun video. really like the content on more obscure topics and obscure players rather than just having so many vids about the same players on every channel. have to say though, dont people realize that curry wouldnt be curry if he went to the grizzlies and that harden wouldnt be harden? getting franchise players is a lot more than just guessing right out of the top prospects, lol. always find it a bit weird when people talk like that.
Interesting and so very true. In those days my Grizzlies would basically miss on just about every single draft pick regardless of the rounds. But that was a completely different era, under a completely different owner (RIP Michael Hesley) under a completely different management team, with a completely different general manager. And more importantly..now we have a completely different and a much better coach in Taylor Jenkins (who should have easily been voted coach of the year..easily.) Now our current ownership and management team can't seem to ever miss on a draft pick. After Morant, Jackson and Williams...our team is basically made up of a lot overlooked 2nd round draft picks and yet we still finished the season as the no. 2 over all seed. We must be doing something right. Anyway...very nice video and WE ARE MEMPHIS!! GO GRIZZLIES AND TIGERS!!!!

Finally someone who see it. If you look at his averages he barely got playing time. He couldn’t do much and wasn’t even an option in the offense. If he went to the warriors, I’m positive the league would be over. Their development team would of turned him into a god.
what differed thabeet and Bennett is the grizzlies were a solid team for the next 6,7 years and really needed a go to scorer. There are two all time prolific scorers on the board and they picked thabeet. The Bennett draft there’s really no what ifs. Cavs won’t draft Giannis at #1.

Because he’s very skillful in the paint, if had a shot he would avg close to 30 a game
Rip Hamilton said the pistons knew Darko Millicic was a bust after his 1st practice as well.
I'm here to make excuses.. oh wait, everyone beat me to it
I think the most alarming aspect about Thabeet’s development as a player is the negative mentality coaches adopted toward him early. Stoudamire gave up on him 10 minutes into the first practice, that’s an atrocious approach to take toward the development of a young player. No one starts out solid, he averaged 3 PPG 3 RPG and 1 BPG in his rookie year. Drafted too high, sure, but he could’ve developed into a solid player with time and patience. With the anxiety of being a high draft pick AND the coaches looking down upon you through the process, he had hurdles to deal with. Steven Adams averaged 3 PPG in his 1st year, Steve Nash 3 PPG, Dirk 7 PPG. There’s potential in everyone, just a matter of perspective and mentality.
These videos are great and do a lot to humanize former players. Aside from him still becoming wealthy, I feel bad for Hash.

Every high expectation placed on athletes by professional sports teams starts early in life and there be few that achieve stardom based on a draft pick is like a Las Vagas bet .

This is why I hate when short ppl say if I had your height I would be x good. The larger body sometimes is just so awkward it doesn't matter how hard you work the coordination is just not there.
Uconn!!
I remember that draft thinking WTF ?? Curry and Harden were ballers in college
He wasn't that bad things just didn't work out basketball wise for him I wish him all the best.
He was good af on 2k as a huge rebounding rookie 🤣🤣
Totally agree
Wait a sec, I thought most draft picks work out with teams before the actual draft, so if Stoudamire thought he wouldn't work after watching him for only 10 mins what the heck was everyone else thinking?
W attitude
Then Knicks GM said he would’ve drafted him number 1 had The Knicks had the number one pick because “you can’t reach size” or something to that effect! I mean at least Jordan Hill was drafted after Steph and those guys (still passed on Jrue) but, he would’ve solidified himself as the worst GM ever if he took Thabeet at 1.
I feel like Hasheem grew up in an era where back to the basket bigs were still a thing. That's not his game at all. He should've been used like DeAndre Jordan / Gobert type role.
I understand your analysis with what you have, but I wouldn’t even call him a bust, he barely got chances to truly improve. If they kept him in the college scene an extra year that would of been huge. Or if that warriors trade went through and they kept Curry. With warriors development team. They would of had a bigger dynasty. Cause at every level he showed improvement and growth.
There’s a a 7foot 16 teen yr old that’s a beast
Hey at least he tried thats what matters the most he didnt give up
He is playing in 30 minutes in the CHINESE BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION
it’s easy to make fun a draft bust until you realize how much they accomplished to get to that level
Jaylen Brown next video A.M Hoops 🙏🙏🙏
Andy hoops playing in the back round? 4:33
I hate it when people compare draft picks to current superstars who were passed in the draft. No, they were not going to win a championship because they added Steph Curry who took 4 years to break out, 5 to make an all-star game or James Harden who was a bench player for 3 years. If you need a big man you draft a big man. Nobody knows which players will breakout or bust. James doesn't play defense and Steph as amazing of a shooter he is, benefits greatly on being on a team that is loaded with solid two-way players. Sticking him on the Grizzly expecting either to carry them will not work. None of them carry their team
