This song arose from when he first moved to LA, as soon as he stepped off the bus some guy said to him "welcome to the jungle you're going to die".

@@user-sm2ql7nq4l The song is about LA and his first visit to Hollywood after leaving Indiana, but the thing the guy said to him was in NYC. The song was written in Seattle when it struck him how big LA is compared to Seattle and brought back the feeling of first going there in the early 80s. There's a lot of confusion over which city the song is talking about because of this but it is indeed talking about LA, particularly Hollywood.

Can we have a moment for Steven Adler? The drums were crucial to this song. Young, blonde and talented. He was stunning on drums... before the heroin. Everyone feels Axl, Slash, Duff and Izzy, but that first album was life changing by Steven. He has never recovered from that fall. Please react to Wasted Time by Skid Row, written about Steven Adler.

Will never forget hearing this live. Pitch black with the opening riff and then the beat dropped, light blast on and I saw the band. It was incredible. And yeah, it's a great metaphor for the world. Somebody screamed the opening line to Axl as he arrived in Cali and it stuck with him. It was mostly written about when Axl arrived in LA from little old Lafayette, Indiana and the absolute culture shock it was - especially in the 80s trying to get into the rock scene. Such a classic song.

When you said about metal being lyrically competent, you'll find that all music - especially this kind, is really symbolic. Far beyond most people's expectations. Behind the drugs alcohol and belligerency of most of these groups are some pure geniusness and some heartfelt shit. Like Kickstart My Heart, that was all about Motley's bassist Nikki Sixx and his crazy trip of dying three types to subsequent heroin ODs and revivals. This song's about Seattle and Axl's views and crazy experiences at the place, he wrote the song very poetically from that standpoint.

You have to understand that those of us that relate to this type of rock, and metal, have anger issues. If you really listen and try to understand, you have to understand that this music comes from the soul, and that soul is pissed off. The reasons for the anger are as different for everyone as our individuality. The tie that binds us is anger.

If you like the transitions and the complex orchestration, you should listen to their song Estranged. It's about 9 minute long so it might be a bit long for a video, but it's a great piece of art. Civil War is deeper than deep in terms of the lyrics, but again it's a long one... Axl Rose has one of the widest recorded vocal ranges, I can't remember if it is 5 full octaves or it spans across 5 octaves (?) but in terms of range most of the divas and celebrated vocal artists can't compete with him.
