Is Harley Davidson Really Scottish?

Harley Davidson is an American Brand, right? It depends how far back in history you go. Scottish history tour guide Bruce Fummey explains the tale of emigration and the history of motor bikes that puts the home of Harley Davidson is, in Agnus, Scotland.

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

My Harley Davidson, a 1993 1200 sportster was built in the US for the US market. At some point in its history it ended up in Scotland. I was thinking the same…my ancestors emigrated around 1840 from Ayrshire to Ontario, Canada. I’m pretty sure the draw was owning land. They did acquire property and then built quite a bit a wealth in flour milling in Guelph. I’m 7 generations descended from the original immigrants and live in Texas (and own a Harley Road King).

I lived in a town called Timaru on the South Island of New Zealand for 2 years, it has an odd Andrew Carnegie link as the Town Hall was built using money he donated to them. Not quite Carnegie Hall in New York (or even the Dunfermline version) but there is a plaque in the town hall commemorating the fact

Aye I remember Timaru, and the pub crawl, well some of it, in 1972. That main street was the end of many a stout young fella, too many pubs, and too far to go to Christchurch. There was a train stop just a wee bit south of there; Te Muka, "Last stop for refreshments" I was never sure where the first stop was but we all hopped off the train and got our pies and tea.

My great-grandparents, Robert Davidson and Annie Galloway emigrated to the San Diego area in 1911. They came with 3 of their 4 sons, following Robert’s eldest brother, John. They were all gardeners and rebuilt the gardens of the Hotel Del Coronado when Spreckels purchase the 25-yr old hotel. My mother, M. Davidson married my father, Harley in 1945 after his return from the ETO. So in jest I can claim to be a Harley-Davidson. The 4th son stayed in Scotland, was a gardener in Auchterarder and in two Highland unit during WWI. His living descendants are well-known in SNP circles.

An interesting video about the genesis of the Harley/Davidson motorcycle company but what you didn't say is that William Sylvester Harley Sr came from a small village in Cambridgeshire, England called Littleport. I live on the same street as his family once did although I can't remember which house his family lived in at that time (the house may have been long gone, replaced by a modern one). There is a memorial to the English half of the iconic company opposite St.George's Church here in Littleport as I walk past it every day. During the summer months, we get hordes of bikers making their way down Victoria Street where W.S Harley Sr once lived on and gather at the memorial. This is ground zero for the English half of the dynamic duo! You could say that the company is more Scottish/English than American as this island of ours is the genesis of that famous partnership.... Keep up the good work!

Hi Bruce, I'm not quite down under but I live in Singapore, so it might be on your travel itinerary en-route to Aus. It would be great for you to do a show here about Scottish influence on this island as there is an amazing legacy from some of the great Scots who have lived here over the years. The real founder of Singapore and first resident, William Farquhar, has a great story to tell about how he founded Singapore despite Raffles who is credited with doing so (read Nadia Wright's excellent book on the topic). Farquhar is a direct ancestor of Justin Trudeau via his local 'wife' Antoinette Clement. Also Dr John Crawford, the Scottish Second Resident of Singapore who settled the treaty to place Singapore under British control. The famous MacRitchie reservoir built by Scottish municipal engineer James MacRitchie. The oldest bridge in Singapore is a beautiful cast iron suspension design built in Glasgow and assembled across the Singapore river. We also have the famous Fullerton Hotel, Anderson bridge (that forms part of the F1 circuit), Thomson Road, the Elgin Bridge, Scott's Road, Claymore road, Gleneagles Hospital, Saint Andrews Cathedral, MacPherson Road named after Ronald MacPherson from my native Skye. The most famous building here were all built by Scottish architectural firm, Swan MacLaren. There is even a headstone to "Our Willie" at the European cemetery in Fort Canning. It would be amazing for you to do a show here and a video on this, there is so much material and great stories to tell.

I see a comment from N.Z. about the Carnegie Trust building a hall in the town. I went to work in South Africa in '88 and was quite staggered to find the local town hall and local library were erected thanks to Carnegie. On the wall of the library, it told of Carnegie trusts efforts to assist development and above the door it said 'slegs blankes'...whites only. Didn't have that at the library back home and it was Carnegie.Huge place that one... So, although the town was a real 'boer dorp'...farmers town...in the '30's, it sought and received a big grant to build quite a splendid town hall with an well sized library. Plenty of brits in town, even in the old days apparently. With regard to Davidson, I thought 'thats a big cottage'...then you say "its got a family AND 2 single men occupying it", I thocht 'no much room in that hoose' Nae wonder they emmigrated.

I would say HD is an American brand 100% the parents of the founders may have been from Scotland and England, but the brand was born in America, so the sons would have been 'cultured' in America and raised there. Triumph is a English brand (prefer to call it British), but the founder was German.

My dad courted mum on a motorbike (not a Harley Davidson). When they retired and were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, someone heard about the courting story and hired a Harley Davidson trike for them to be driven for a ride. They were absolutely stoked. My brother often thought dad’s bike was an Indian, but just before she died, mum asked me right out of the blue if a Norton was a motorbike!!! @BruceFummey on your trip to Australia you must come to Brisbane. There is much Scottish history linked to it and Queensland state in general. Brisbane is named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, Governor of New South Wales, born in Largs, Ayrshire. While doing deliveries to the city hall, I found myself in the Lord Mayor’s office. In there was a large thick wooden door. I was told it was from his ancestral home. South of Brisbane is Logan City named after Captain Patrick Logan born in East Renton, Berwickshire. He was the commandant of the Moreton Bay Penal Colony and was not liked due to his harsh treatment of his charges.

I'm an American with predominately Scottish ancestry. I'm proud of my Scottish ancestry, but I never self-identify as "Scottish", *except* as a shortcut when I'm talking to a group that consists exclusively of other Americans and where it is understood by everyone involved that I'm talking about my ancestry, and not my nationality. Many Scots ridicule diaspora members in general, and Americans in particular, if they self-identify as "Scottish". And every time I hear an another American make that mistake in an international forum, I cringe and sit back and wait for the inevitable fireworks to start. *However* I find it funny that the same Scots who disown millions of diaspora members claim famous diaspora members as "Scottish". WTF! The founders of Harley-Davidson were Americans, Americans with Scottish ancestry, yes, but they were no more "Scottish" than I am. If anonymous members of the diaspora aren't "Scottish", then neither are famous diaspora members.

Funny how folk will claim the "inventions" of famous American entrepreneur immigrants but if an modern day American tries to connect to their Scottish roots were are told to bugger off.
