Frutiger Metro is so underrated. I always loved this aesthetics so much and saw it a lot in the early 2010s on DeviantArt and had few of those wallpapers on my PC at the time. I never knew the name of it because I had MLP, Emo and Scene Wallpapers in that style and just thought it was a Internet Emo/Scene style. now with a name attached to it It has open up a whole world to me on things I never noticed but seen in my everyday life back then. it has even inspired me to make some Frutiger Metro stuff myself today now.

Same. Frutiger Areo and Metro are so nostalgic to me. I wish I knew how to make wallpapers for my phone lol or had the option to change my app icons to more 3d dimensional. Best believe when I get my own house one day it's going to be heavily influenced by Frutiger Areo 😂. Basically create the world I wish we were still in.

When I see Frutiger Metro or Frutiger Aero I get overwhelmed by nostalgia. It's not like if I see a liminal space where it's just a distant familiarity, I mean I can't even focus on anything else, I just have this extremely vivid sense of familiarity. If I could go back to any time, it'd 100% be 2000-2017.

hi, i loved this video. i'm the creator of the frutiger metro article on the aesthetics wiki. i chose the name literally just based on the Reddit post stating he made it up, and i personally felt it fit at the time as it does share a lot of similarities with frutiger aero (the colours, flourishes, humanism, nature, etc). i agree with the points you made about the name, especially the metro part, as ive always thought frutiger metro and the metro design language don't really have much in common. however, i feel the name has come to stay and its honestly quite charming and endearing. there's a ton of frutiger aero subgenres on the wiki now, most of which ive made a lot of contributions to. anyways, i subscribed, i would love to see more content like this from you as not much people talk about frutiger aero in-depth on youtube.

glad to hear you enjoyed it. thank you for all the work you've done. i do archival / source compilation stuff on other parts of the internet and i know how difficult it can be. i do enjoy the name as well (despite the fact that it was literally pulled out of some dude's ass). i think it gives the aesthetic a very broad / subjective reach, and i tried to emphasize that.

i love frutiger metro so much. not only is it visually pleasing but incredibly nostalgic. i love bright colours and loud, obnoxious designs, so the calm, nature-adjacent aesthetic of frutiger aero is still nostalgic and comforting to me as someone who grew up in the 2000s, but frutiger metro is so much more visually exciting and pleasing. ithink it really encapsulates a lot of what i love about old vector art and the early internet as somebody who grew up on youtube, deviantart and whatnot. also as a scene kid, frutiger metro basically describes my entire aesthetic just with a few images lol. it just feels like a reflection of my soul and i hold it very near and dear.

My elementary schools website had links to online child friendly games. I would give anything to have those links again, but one in particular. It’s this game where you choose a certain color, then when you move the cursor different frutiger metro designs using that color would be created. Triangles for orange, leaves and stems for green, ect. This video really reminds me of that website

3:04 Always loved these wallpapers with Domo, Danbo, and Bugdroid. Have been looking for a name for this kind of look too but I doubt one can find a term to encapsulate it all. My mind just defaults to "late 2000s deviantArt edit" as they're mostly edits of existing photographs set to a bleached colortoning or, in the case of the first two examples, Cinema4D renders which I think could also be linked to a bunch of Minecraft wallpapers made in the same program.

As a lil kid I really wanted to move into the big city, so i guess thats where my love of the aesthetics came from, lol. Very stylish. Reminds me a lot of the game De Blob. Vibrant & rebellious, holds a strong association with music & art.

Thanks for making this video! It really bordered me how "Frutiger Metro" is portraited on the internet. In the beginning, I thought it was pretty neat, being a mostly flat aesthetic that also have the motifs of Frutiger Aero, like the Windows 8 wallpaper that you showed in the video. But looking at the images that people associate the aesthetic with, it really confused me, since the images seemed to be more urban-focused than nature and humanism. To me, the visuals seemed inconsistent and not representative of what I think of "Frutiger Aero". Hance why I added the other name "Vector Metro", since, in my opinion, it represented the aesthetic better. I'm also responsible for creating the "subcategories" section of the Frutiger Metro page, to better organize this rather broad style. Also, I believe that Vectorbloom is the true predecessor of Frutiger Metro, since its visual motifs are strikingly similar to it, and Microsoft's Metro UI is kind of a simplified swan song for the aesthetic. This video really captures most of my thoughts that I have about the name and characterization of "Frutiger Metro" on the internet. Great video! :D

The grunginess/stencil graffiti I think draws similarities to this so-called "UrBling". That was the peak aesthetic when I was in later years elementary school and middle school. Like Piraka from Bionicle, G4 Tech TV in the late 2000s, Ecko Unltd, Jay-Z/Linkin Park Collision Course, etc.. And even Hybrid Theory all the way back in 2000. Never was into this "frutiger metro", because I never considered it edgy or cool. Edit: Hybrid theory had no "bling" aspect, I think. I prob got it mixed up with the 20 anniversary edition in my mind. Sry. But the graphic design definitely feels more overall 2000s as opposed to overall 90s despite being from 2000.

I have some specific memories of the Frutiger Metro aesthetic, I saw it in my city, but in my country it was mostly urbling, but I remember when I visited Berlin as young I saw this aesthetic everywhere, idk why but when I think of Frutiger Metro I think of Berlin. It was not in the grungy areas but like very specifically residential areas but a bit on the lower end. It tried making everything feel nice awesome and like home, but nothing really looked inviting like on the paper filled with frutiger metro.

As a Sonic fan, I see Frutiger Metro and think Sonic Generations. Its graphic design did a great job of blending the old (the bright colors and abstract shapes in Japanese box art of the Genesis games) and the new (motifs common to frutiger metro such as the patterned circles and star shapes), bringing the game's vision forward.

It reminds me of old Instagram and Pizap(now dead). It somehow irks me but at the same time makes me feel nostalgic. Like an unwanted memory that keeps popping up out of nowhere. I don't think the design is inherently bad. I just think it reminds me too much of cringey things.

LittleBigPlanet, 3DS, Hannah Montana and Doodle Jump are the embodiment of this aesthetic for me. Weirdly enough, the Wii U reverted back a bit to Frutiger Metro but games like Splatoon and Tokyo Mirage Sessions: ♯FE had a combination between both aesthetics. You could almost pinpoint the time when the shift over to Metro began on Nintendo consoles. Never was too big a fan of Frutiger Metro but I do hold some nostalgia as I grew up with it. 2012 marked a noticeable stylistic change. Overall a bittersweet feeling. A bit corporate and washed.

I agree with you. The Wii U already had many minimalistic takes, as it was released already by the end of this design era. It's interesting how it was more vibrant and cheerful than the Wii, and yet had some more simplified icons and logos (but considerably more colorful). I also didn't like frutiger metro that much back in the day; maybe because I moved to an urban center quite early on life, and a good part of me really disliked it lmao; I ended up being a classical wannabe child, trying to reject modern stuff in favor of old aesthetics. Nowdays, I miss it all greatly.

Frutiger aero is just a newer version. And more nostalgic

It's like the aesthetic of language books from my middle school days

great video, i love the language you use and the editing, although i would ask if you could leave text up for a little longer as i can’t read it fast enough 😭(unless it’s a design decision)

definitely was a decision by me to go as fast as possible. some ppl have told me to slow down and i’ll be keeping that in mind in the future.

I think that some of the just dance games exasperate rave metro, at least some of the older ones.

Idk if you heard of them, but I feel like the Deeqs (from dairy queen) fit this aesthetic perfectly.

@OhioanOrganDonor it was kinda like ubfunkeys (they fit too!). Just you on a quest to stop a villain(s). Sadly, the story was never finished and it turned into 3 puzzle flash games, then completely vanished. The theme of the original fits very well with the aesthetic too. kzread.info/dash/bejne/q2eI15RyeaTep6Q.htmlsi=Gu182VyjZB17zSXb

This was always the most corporate and corny of the design aesthetics. I remember seeing this design aesthetic in the episode of Tim and Eric that parodies MTV variety shows. Always thought it was ugly and it brings back the despair of being a helpless high schooler in the 2008 economic downturn.

I hated this design era when it was about. I was a kid but idk what was wring with me but it made me physically feel sick. Like i never was but it gave me travel sickness. Same with some songs from back then too. There was a R.E.M song that did it, it wasn’t losing my religion but same album. Especially the clown fish with the bubbles, absolutely hated it. Ever toilet in the uk had something like it. The only one i do like is that hand soap where it looked like the fish was swimming in the soap. Idk the name but i loved it. Honey and vanilla scent. My nan had it and maybe its because i loved her so much and loved going around her house. Man i moss her. How the f*ck did i end up tearing up from hating this design period 😂 miss you nan.
