Best unbiased comparison on YT between the two... I wanted to buy S95D, so was searching for an unbiased comparison between the two... I love LG too, in fact my current TV is an LG too, but the way some people were bashing the S95D, I got confused, thinking is the matte screen really that bad? This video proved that S95D has more superior picture quality than the G4... Thanks man.. I don't need to see any more videos now... :)

This is a solid review that I think most people would find helpful. It's unfortunate you are being harassed by a swarm of LG fan boys. They're been like this since QD-OLED panels started mud stomping WOLED panels. Competition in the market place really bugs them. Thanks for taking the time to put this together.

Im guessing using filmmaker mode on both would create very similar brightness with probably the s95d appearing slightly more saturated?, i would have preferred to see s95d movie compared to cinema home on the g4 since those are the less accurate more brighter modes, cinema is the accurate mode for the g4 so it would obviously appear dimmer than movie on the s95d, so i would have preferred it being compared with filmmaker mode, but overall nice job.

Question: Would you be able to measure/compare APL capabilities of those sets?. In higher APL scenes we lose brightness which means lower contrast and lowers the depth perception - so that is as important as pure blacks, more important than peak brightness alone. A lot of people say G4 is brighter in real content - that is probably due to higher APL (or worse Samsung tone mapping). Perhaps the combination of inky blacks that WOLED has and higher APL than ever before (it apparently draws 30% more energy over G3 and can heat up the room) - could unlock this 3D pop people are talking about. Perhaps it’s not only thanks to better processing but higher overall picture brightness. Possibly they have crossed this threshold of contrast/brightness where objects stand out to our eyes. Would love for someone to compare APL to see the difference between them. Ps. I know you compared subjectively APL here but this was in incompatible modes - inaccurate Samsung and accurate LG. You would need to load up min 2000 or 4000 nit content and see them on both what it looks like in bright scenes.

Couple of remarks - comparing inaccurate Samsungs movie mode to accurate cinema on LG is a bit pointless. It doesn’t show what LG is capable of only how Samsung oversaturated colors. Secondly - with reflections being in the picture - Samsung loses color saturation to the point it looks under saturated compared to LG accurate mode? I mean that shows how much contrast gets a hit. Whilst on LG we don’t see reflections when colors are present, only when blacks. Gloss wins no doubt. Not to mention reflections and picture are at different focal lengths - which means it’s easy to lock your eyes on the picture and totally ignore reflections - unless they are too strong and attract our focus more than picture itself. I adore your hdr videos man. Well done putting them with similar reflections also. You might be first who managed to do so. It’s fun to watch.

@@zelko0768 Samsung's Oleds, well at least since the S90/95C and this S95D as well are very accurate in filmmaker mode especially after a calibration. It's simply pointless to compare two TVs in anything other than their most accurate picture modes, you'll simply see each manufacturers approach to manipulating the picture - that doesn't tell you which TV is better. To learn that, you'd have to get them as accurate as you can and play demanding content (= very bright content with wide color gamut and/or high color saturation, scenes with high dynamic range and very high/very low APL scenes) that's where the wheat separates from the chaff. Regarding showing the coating; VillaMan did a decent job capturing the reflections on camera there but to fairly compare them, they have to be at the same angle towards the camera! Put them right next to each other or on top of one another otherwise we have no idea how the reflection of one TV would actually look like on the other.

I have an S90C I just purchased and it looks great on 4k HDR but it actually doesn’t as good as the 10 year old Samsung 4k edge lit led it replaced as far as upscaling and motion of regular television shows we’ve watched for years. I saw both at the local big box and while the G4 has better white brightness, the color brightness in the S95D was far superior and more impressive. Also artist intent is overrated, I want the picture quality that looks best to me. On a side note, I held up my phone flashlight to the S95D and the way it minimized the glare was impressive. @@tHAvIlLaMaN No I didn’t. I already knew Samsungs movie mode would be highly inaccurate and over brightened due to their lack of adherence to the EOTF curve. I also knew LG would be more accurate because their sets are used as client monitors in Hollywood grading suites. You need to understand that people willing to spend thousands on a TV are hardcore enthusiasts, looking for highly accurate picture quality. Your assumption that we leave TV’s in “Standard” or “Vivid” modes is completely wrong. Accurate modes like Filmmaker or LG’s Cinema mode is what we want to see.

Filmmaker mode sucks, put the LG on standard, colour 65 and native/dynamic colour gamut, that's what I use, nothing below 68 is oversaturated on my G3. Can easily fix that in settings. When set accordingly, Samsung's TVs these days can be extremely accurate. But Samsung knows that 99% of their customer base has no idea what a Delta E is lol. So they set up their TVs so that out of the box they're appealing to most while still providing the extra flexibility to appeal to the few
