Dumb and Dumber is a 1994 American buddy comedy film directed by Peter Farrelly, who cowrote the screenplay with Bobby Farrelly and Bennett Yellin. It is the first installment in the Dumb and Dumber franchise. Starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, it tells the story of Lloyd Christmas (Carrey) and Harry Dunne (Daniels), two dumb but well-meaning friends from Providence, Rhode Island, who set out on a cross-country trip to Aspen, Colorado, to return a briefcase full of money to its owner, thinking it was abandoned as a mistake though it was actually left as a ransom. Lauren Holly, Karen Duffy, Mike Starr, Charles Rocket, and Teri Garr play supporting roles.

I loved this movie when it came out, and I was 15. I've come to not find it nearly as funny now when I'm 45, especially when I saw the trailer for Dumb And Dumber 2 and wasn't finding myself laughing at those clips. And the one clip I found hilarious was the dream sequence where the waiter had his stones used as a training bag.

Another Fun Fact: According to the Farrelly brothers, Jeff Daniels wasn't wanted for the film, but Jim Carrey wanted him in it. In order to ensure a no from him, they offered Daniels $50,000 for the role. He accepted without any hesitation nor did he attempt to negotiate, despite insistence from his agent the film would "kill his career." By 1994, the film was Daniels' most successful.

@@josh72456 No Clint Eastwood randomly went up to Jeff Daniels and told him that the toilet scene happened to him in real life. While they were at some fundraiser golf tournament thing. Started laughing, and just walked away. Then some years later when Eastwood cast him in a movie he was directing he told Daniels he offered him the part because 'If you can do 2 Days in the Valley and you can do Dumb & Dumber, you can do this.' I love the idea that despite Eastwood on the outside for the past 30 years looks like he's a grumpy old grandpa who has seen it all. Lived during a much tougher era and doesn't seem like the kind of guy who in a million years would watch a movie called Dumb and Dumber and. Not only can appreciate it, but understood exactly why Daniels did Dumb and Dumber to begin with. Daniels wanted to avoid getting type cast and more importantly he wanted to have a career as an actor rather than having to do the work of being a movie star. To use his word it was his way to become a "hired-gun" genre be damned so long as the script is good. And he didn't mention him by name but from an young age he wanted to avoid ending up in a situation like Liam Neeson who after Taken which was great. Got boxed in and had to do more and more action movies each one worse than the next. And in a lot of cases those type of actors having to go under the knife to not look your age and be on all kinds of "medication" to keep on doing it.

Another Fun Fact: During filming, Jim Carrey stayed the night at the Stanley Hotel and requested to stay in the infamous room 217 (Stephen King's: The Shining). Harland Williams' "dolphin having a stroke" reaction to drinking the beer was actually improvised by him right before shooting. He mentioned it recently on a podcast (maybe his own podcast? I forget). He actually said it *was* a sort of "dolphin" noise that he had done as a random joke earlier on set, and I think one of the Farrellys randomly suggested he do something like that for the scene - they kinda just told him to do whatever, even though this was like his very first movie - I think they happened to notice him doing stand-up shortly before the movie shoot and immediately liked him. He talked about how he basically started getting steady work as soon as he got to Hollywood - people just really loved his stand-up immediately.

I love this move. And for the reason why I love this movie more than most would say, it's because of Loyd and Harry. Basically it's that as an actor it's easy to act stupid for comedic sake. But the genius of Dumb and Dumber is that the actors are playing characters who actually think they are super smart but are too stupid to comprehend what's going on around them. And that they also play the characters straight. Also the soundtrack is what really solidified this movie. A lot of great and witty jokes are dialogue focused.
