“I’m in low level burnout, but it’s FINE….” Mm, is it girl?….is it? Seriously though, as someone who’s been there, low level burnout leads to high level burnout if you’re not careful, take some time to slow down, do some art that feeds your soul just because it feeds your soul, don’t question it, and certainly don’t worry about posting it. As much as we all appreciate you sharing so much of your art with all of us, it’s important to keep a part of yourself that’s just for you.

I love art challenges as a whole, literally prepping Huevember as I'm writing this. I've always felt that there's nothing really wrong with making things in advance to post when it comes to an art challenge. People pre-film videos for a variety of reasons, and nobody ever bats an eye. Why should it be different for artists? It shouldn't. We're still pushing ourselves because some people have jobs, kids, plans, life situations, etc. that stop them from potentially actually carving out the time to do this every day. Rest days or prep makes it much more accessible to me when it comes to the mental load of it, because it's healthier. I can't make art every single day, it does not work for me. I won't punish myself and say I can't participate in art challenges because of that. I do it because I love it, but I think most artists can agree they're not gonna wreck their mental health for art.

As someone who is 32 years old and definitely experienced the culture shift surrounding Inktober/Drawtober and even fully completed Inktober one year where I actually drew something in ink every single day, my experience is definitely that even back then people were often planning in advance and making thumbnail sketches for ideas and I often felt like I couldn’t keep up with it all even though I did draw something every day. I think that is still true of some people, but also I love the acceptance of “if you want to commit to once a week instead of every day then do that, you know yourself” vibes in the more recent years. I do think something gets lost when it becomes more about having something to post on the right day rather than actually drawing something on the day, but that was already happening (imo) even within Inktober (at least by 2017). I have a healthier relationship with it overall now, and I think the one thing that makes me sad is that I genuinely want to complete so many of the prompt lists but there are SO MANY and I become very indecisive and end up doing nothing usually now 😅 but this year coincided with my obsession with Tears of the Kingdom and Legend of Zelda in general so I drew a handful of Linktober prompts and it was easier to make some kind of choice. 🤷🏼

I am someone who loves to draw but doesn't really post at all, but I understand where you're coming from, i feel art is an independent journey, so these challenges should be treated as personal challenges for example when people did the 100 heads challenge the most important thing was, Is it improving your ability to draw faces? Or challenging you in making specific features and different races that you dont generally observe or draw? So similarly -tober should be very similar, a personal challenge within a challenge, what i mean is you can find a way to customise it for your needs and improvements other than just the repetition of drawing everyday just for the sake of it while burning out.

omg that first marker drawing is so precioUS, love the colors you used!! very rich! and as for the topic on the daily challenges, i kind of just dont participate in any of them anymore cause i dont really find prompts all that interestinG jdioHS but but i remember what got me into ink drawing in the first place was inktober! i kno it got some flack for being strictly traditional but i always felt like that made sense! i dont think i'd use ink the way i do now if i just opted for digital art when i felt insecure about my traditional inks. its also kinda funny how october is like the month where every artist just runs to find a daily prompt list !

I totally feel this 100% I’ve tried participating in 2017 and 2018and got a decent way through. In 2017 I made my own prompt list of things that just sounded fun to me and got about 8 days through using ballpoint pen every day and then in 2018 I followed the official list with traditional ink and dip pen with a couple pops of color and made it a little over half way through. I did some thumbnailing early on and kept it mostly low pressure, but I did end up getting pretty burnt out by the end. You can tell the level of effort dropped off, but I still had fun with it and it was relatively low pressure. I tried posting most days but mainly just the ones I liked. I tried again in 2019 and made it a couple days in, but the drama definitely had me questioning a few things. Since 2019 it’s definitely felt different and now I’m always unsure what medium to use, which prompt list to choose, how much effort I’m going to put into it, weather I’d like to push myself to do it every day or do one once a week- I tried to do it again this year in ink but following different lists, but it hasn’t stuck or become a regular practice for me. I’ve been feeling a lot more jaded about the community aspect of social media, especially now that there’s no real dedicated place to post art anymore. Instagram has always been iffy but I kept posting there because I had been since 2014, but since reels became more popular and hashtags have broken, I’m kinda at a loss now. And with the added pressure of turning everything I make into a product and seeing it through that lense, it’s a lot more overwhelming and less certain now. I feel like you always are able to put all of my thoughts about art into your videos so well it’s honestly wild. Also I absolutely love how you’re approaching it this year! Not worrying about posting or sticking to one medium, all the little drawings you’ve done are so nice and fun and I love the colors! Thank you Al for all you do!!

I was gung-ho about drawtober this year, I started planning early, mixed up 2 different prompt lists I liked so I wouldn't feel so pressured into doing prompts I wouldn't like, and then halfway through I became so discouraged because it was like no one was seeing my art, and other art in the tags that were just straight copies of another artist's work or even AI were getting so much more engagement. I know I shouldn't have let that get to me, but it did, and my art suffered for it most days.

I kinda like this fluid Artober philosophy shift because it emphasises taking what you need from the experience. The only reason why I post my low/mid effort Artober stuff is to learn to be okay with being out of my comfort zone and learning that I can make something that only I value and the world will not end. I'm a recovering people pleaser so it's a nice challenge to put something online that's borderline embarrassingly bad that I know no one will see or enjoy but I'm still proud of myself. For me it also encourages a daily or semi-daily art habit or set other intentions like focusing on learning how to use a new material.

This struggle sounds like its more about internal vs external focus... if a challenge offers only external rewards (being seen, gaining followers/likes, etc.) I can see why it would feel like there's a standard and maybe one that's too high to be worth it. But if its internally focused ( gaining a new skill, overcoming a personal obstacle) then those "rules" probably dont matter as much and you can just do what's right for you. The good news is that it's always up to you to determine which way to focus ;D

I think drawtober as it is these days feels more like a community art project with everyone coming together to make a body of work to be released in the month of October based off the same themes. I think a big reason why theres so much emphasis around the social media aspect is directly because its a community based challenge. While there definitely is issues where people over commit past their limits, it also is a really fun way to attempt creating a collective body of work if thats not something you're used to. The community aspect can be really useful in helping commiting to doing the whole project because it can feel like the viewers are waiting on the next piece. Overall I think its up to the individual to decide what it is they want out of partipating though, and I dont think the people putting in their all should stop anyone who just wants to do a daily drawing challenge that doesn't necessarily result in having 31 completeled illustrations.

I started to join inktiober in 2017 I believe and I started to enjoy it a lot in the recent years. but that is mainly because I'm doing it with a friend group together and sharing it on my art account is just a nice bonus. Joining an artchallenge in a tiny circle is really amazing for me, because you talk more about the drawings and at least I take longer to see how my friends interpreted the prompts. In all the years I joined inktober, I only finished it once though. drawing everyday is just unrealistic with my mental health. So I stopped making that one of my goals. and this is somthing I would suggest anyone as well. skip a day if it doesnt work and focus on the experience of drawing the same prompt with others together. and on the days you don't draw you can still enjoy the art of others.

I think that as someone working to make art as their sole income, Drawtober would come with a higher pressure to "perform well". Due to the life you live and the work you do, what Drawtober would look like for full time artists would be different than someone who does art more casually. As a full time artists who makes their money based on what is posted online, participating in Drawtober would have a very large social media aspect and wouldn't be as much about the "original intention of Inktober" I think there will be a shift away from "commercializing" art as much in the future because many artists don't feel like it is sustainable mentally or physically. Historically speaking, humans have never made art this way before, cranking out art every day.

I participated for the first time this year, and went in, kind of thinking I'm gonna do a low pressure ink drawing each day, on the day, no prep (no cheating I thought). On the first day, I did that and when I saw all of the beautiful finished pieces that people where posting (that had clearly been made beforehand for some of them) I kind of felt like I was underperforming and had to do better. So I switched to gouache, thinking I have to learn gouache anyways, it'll be a good opportunity to do so. But I really treated the prompts literally and didn't focus on smart and original interpretations. I didn't end up finishing the challenge because of school vacation here and my 6 years old son being at home (also, I kind of got over it, as it was a lot of work to create, film, edit and post each day) so I ended up just creating most days, and I switched back and forth between mediums. I also did some bad art. BUT I still progressed in gouache and so it was worth doing it for me in that sense. However, I now get the people that prep for it lol. Also, I didn't feel like I benefitted from that much more exposure than what I usually get, which is very little because I still have small channel / account. So... I don't know, I don't think it's a big deal not to do it, and also, I regret not doing more spooky stuff before halloween because of those meaningless prompts 🙃 still kinda fun...

I totally agree with you about the fact that Inktober is a challenge to be made in October. I, too, don't see the point in making the prompt in advance (ie. in September) to then post it on the day you were supposed to draw it (it's supposed to be part of the challenge). This is just unrealistic for most artists. I get that this is a fantastic way of making content, but you can make content in a different way about this challenge. That being said, I think there is still a point in participating in it. The ultimate goal is to improve yourself, get out of your comfort zone. I just think that people are still not comfortable about showing the real side of it (which is that sometimes, you can't finish a drawing, or you are disappointed in what you've made, etc.) Showing of all perfectly finished prompts just to get so burnt out after that you need a month to recuperate, that is pointless to me haha. That was my 2 cents on the matter :)

I think it has to do with the individuals proximity to art. Like is it their job or are they casual. Since you are a content creator, it feels like you would feel the pressure more. Versus me, a non content creator, its super fun! Especially going through the hashtags and seeing my favorite artists make beautiful illustrations( and the potential for prints) I've never been publicly participating, but I've tried a few prompts like magtober. They're great to be loose with and seeing how my imagination interpreted a single word.

Edit: Yes I think that these monthly challenges are definitely worth doing if you make sure that you enjoy it and don't burn yourself out. It's hard not to feel pressured into creating beautiful pieces because 'that's what everyone else does' But I think it's a good idea to have realistic expectations about what you want to create in that month and if you don't stick with it then that's fine too!

I've been using it as a chance to work on quick drawings. Trying not to take more than 20mins for each prompt and using the prompt to make h me think outside my box (doing kattober so it's drawing cats every day, I'm all in for that!) but not strictly doing then every day, just doing them by the end of the month. So some days I've not done any, other days I've done 2 or 3. I got ahead earlier in the month and am 2 behind now but that's my plan for tomorrow and I'll do the last day with my niece on Tuesday.

I definitely have the same feeling of it being more about social media and getting seen than the actual art making. That's also not necessarily bad but it kind of feels like a "if a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it, did it make a sound" vibe. Like if I do the art every day but can't post about it did I really participate in the eye of social media? I dunno, I think I'm over trying Inktober "intentionally" and want to just participate when and if I feel like it. Also obviously there are all the positives you mentioned and it's cool to see such a big number of artists participating!

This is such a good video as always and I love your critical thinking! Personally I find drawtober super enriching and it feels like the one time in the year where I fully go all out with art and really push myself to my limit. I don’t feel like I usually do that with art, at least not to the same extreme, so I find drawtober tangible for me since it’s a once in a year thing and I know that I’ll only have to do it for a specific amount of time. I also know that once it’s over I’m able to resume with my normal pace of art which helps me to keep going. I’ve only done every single day once (I’ve participating three times) and I find it to be more beneficial when I don’t do art every day. I still try to not skip too many days, but if I’m ever exhausted or just completely uninspired by a prompt, I skip it. Having that balance works really well for me and I always leave the month feeling like I’ve achieved something good and it’s a really good practice!

I never experienced the original Inktober experience because I wasn’t apart if the online art community until 2019 and didn’t participate in Inktober until 2020. I just do whatever prompts I want from multiple artists, I’ve never done all 31 days, but I also mostly draw digital art character portraits with one or two traditional ink artworks sprinkled in, so I probably would need two months in advance to do all of them lol. This year I only did four. I even dropped the ball on making a Halloween themed illustration for today :( I’m always really motivated the first week and drop off from there and do a couple random days lol. I am even worse with Mermay despite my love for mermaids (I always get burnt out and unmotivated even if I’ve only done one day lol).

I've been involved in some form of -tober since maybe 2012 - 2013, and I've realized over time that my brain just doesn't really need an every day sort of drawing challenge. My turning point was actually a different challenge, the one week sketchbook. I've honestly rarely had an issue with drawing regularly, and having a challenge to fill an entire sketchbook in a week threw my natural drive into a tail spin. Now, whenever I attempt one of the -tobers, if I start feeling that way I stop. In 2016 I actually did complete inktober, had Jake Parker sign my sketchbook and everything (pre-problematic things, oof), and since then I've been way more lenient on myself. That year was also the year in-between undergrad and grad school for me, so all I was doing was drawing and adding to my portfolio. So I had the time! I created my own prompt list with my best friend during the pandemic since we had more time to draw/post then too, but now that I have a full-time job/after work activities it's hard to commit to something like that anymore. I tried this year and gave up after going to a wedding the first weekend of October, lol. But I think that's okay! If you start and then only feel like it's a detriment to your creative process, don't feel like you *need* to do a challenge like this. I do like prompts, I like seeing people's lists and getting inspiration, but if I draw those prompts, yay, if I don't, I don't. You can still participate that way, not to mention liking/commenting on other people's work. I do always enjoy the community aspect, that is something I do try to participate in every year in whatever way I can.

I’m an anxious person that only worked big, and wondered why I never finished an October challenge. So I limited myself. Only marker. Only pen(ballpoint because I don’t care for liners or inking)Also no big page drawings. A SKETCH a day. I started the day before October began. Then I did exactly as I described. I completed 31 drawings on the same page. I adore the finished piece. I would like to take part in a monthly drawing challenge, but October doesn't work for me at all. To me, the biggest draw is (and always was) the community: posting your art, seeing what others did and sharing experiences. I agree, that the challenges don't feel 'authentic' anymore. They are too heavily focused on prepping and Making Good Art. Like you said, it's all about posting art on the correct day. As I don't post my art online right now, it doesn't seem worth it to participate. For me, drawing every day would be the most important challenge. In a way I prefer the Sketch A Day app (by Tom Hicks, available on iOs and Android, fot free!). It gives you today's prompt and off you go. Draw, post, see what others did. Every day of the year.

I think the whole purpose of these drawing challenges are still the same: drawing everyday to build up that habit, stretch your creativity, and have fun. I think the evolution of the prompts has certainly turned it into a larger and larger area of community building and social media outreach. I think you're correct that part of the reason that people make such elaborate work now is partially to build up their following (since the community is so bustling in this month). But the original reason was just another added layer to the challenge: not only do you draw everyday, but you push yourself to create as best of art as you can. It does lead to a very specific kind of challenge that more so tests your connection with art, but a challenge nonetheless. But personally, probably because I feel absolutely no obligation to post my art for others to perceive, I don't think there's a huge pressure for people to participate every single day to the same level of dedication of certain artists like Shaan (furrylittlepeach). If you want to go all out, do it! if you want to take things very chill, totally fine! I think at this point, after everything that happened a few years ago with the official inktober situation, the challenge has become much more relaxed. You as the artist have control over how much time and energy you put into the challenge, and that is okay!

I personally grew up seeing artists participate in ink tober and see it as this cool event. Definitly think that there is a different side to it for those making content out of it, like i didnt know there are people who pre draw the pieces a month in advance tbh. However, as a view i think the best ink tober videos or content are those that tie everything together. Like for example I remember one year where an artust dedicated a small skecthbook to making a story about this almost stick man character going through things based on prompts. Or another content creator who did maybe three pieces each with like three prompts but choose which ones they wanted. I dont really care if someone interprets literally or does something insanely creative, like tbh i remember seeing on tik tok someone draw a sexy pumkin girl out of the prompt pumkin. TLDR see what works for you, making content is tough doing things your way regardless of what way it is is prob the best thing to do.

personally, my only issue with many art challenges like inktober/drawtober is the month long time frame and expectation to create daily. my brain is so chaotic that my motivation can drop off in the first half, or even the first week. so when i've tried these challenges ive skipped many days or dropped it entirely. also, i understand what you mean when you say you don't like forcing yourself to create if the prompt doesn't call to you. i hate when i feel like im forcing myself to do things i dont like, especially with art since it's meant to be my place of personal freedom. most recently though, ive done a twelve day sims 4 cas challenge and while i wasn't perfect with posting daily, i still managed to keep my motivation through. also i think going through burnout or art block (like i am now) and doing these month long challenges don't help me or many others. but i also know that these challenges can bring back people's motivation, unlike me. so i think these challenges are just made for people who's brains can deal with everything they bring.

I tried to complete Inktober for many years and never succeeded. I never had the chance to only do art, I always had a full time occupation going on and I also really love adding details. So I decided to make my own prompt list with only 4 prompts this year and it was the most fun I had ever participating in an October challenge. I think you really just gotta do what you like doing and how much you're capable of in the time you have to enjoy it and not burn out or be art blocked after. I actually would not recommend the 31 day inktober challenge for artists that already create regularly because the chance it will throw you off your game might be quite high.

My first Inktober I literally did whatever I felt like, so long as some kind of ink was involved. Like I didn’t even bother with prompts, the whole point was to turn art into a habit. Like one day I grabbed some sharpies and doodled all over a page. That’s it. And one year (2019 I think) I did Inktober (actually following prompts), Huevember and carvedecember (stamp carving challenge) in a row. The funny thing was my huvember theme was “Donnie Darko” which I did by making the background the days choose color and then using a set of Darko themed stamps I was carving as I went along. Then I found out about Carvedecember a few days into the month and was just like, well, I’m kinda still in the carving groove so why not? These days I pretty much do whatever I feel, like doing. I do enjoy prompt lists because it gives me a jumping off point. Left to my own devices I do a lot of doodles and geometric abstracts, but even those seem to get elevated somewhat when I have a jumping off point. I’m not real strict with myself, I have a lot of health issues too so I always try to mould the experience around what will work best for me. I did an artober prompt list where instead of drawing anything I used the letters in the word to create and abstract shape and then made colorful backgrounds with alcohol markers. It was fun, low pressure, and easily done from the couch. There have also been plenty of times where I fizzled out part way, or ended up combining a lot of prompts. This may be a time where being a hobby artist with a very small following works to my advantage: no one ever really questions the decisions I make, and I don’t feel much pressure to live up to any expectations because there aren’t any.

I did peachtober a few years ago, but I knew I couldnt do every day, so I combine the prompts 2 and 2 which also maybe it quite a lot harder to come up with things to draw for each one, but it gave me enough time between to actually do it on the days and finish it :)

I think everything will always root down to “what is your goal”. If you’re a content creator and your goal out of a month long challenge is to create content, then maybe doing it ahead of time will be beneficial because you’ll gain more views if the prompts are posted on the day of. If you are doing it to get a daily habit going, then I don’t see why it matters when you do it or post it at all, as long as you are actually drawing every day. If your goal is to just create art based on a public theme and share it with a community, then do that. I really like the modern take on october art challenges, i like that it’s become more flexible and mentally sustainable. But i think if you want to do whats best for you during this time, you have to figure out what that “best” is. Really become clear on your reasons to doing the challenge, how much time you’re willing to spend on it, how important is the consistency or sharing aspect of it is. As long as you have a clear motive, you will be able to stay true to yourself, and be proud of anything you create. By the way i adore your sketchbooking process and will now proceed to binge watch the rest of your videos. Stay you! ❤️

I've been Not Caring for my art for the past few months and nothing has been better. I don't NEED to practice, I dont NEED to finish and I don't NEED to post anything- I just wanna doodle and feel good. I just do what my feelings want. I've been studiyng XX century modernism tho... I think that helps lol

I try to do the October art challenge most years. I use it as a way to get better at my inking, since I don't really ink a lot of things normally (I do a lot of sketching and gouache). I try to keep my drawings relatively small so that they don't take too long to do every day. I also TRY to do them daily, but often have to do some "make up work" when life gets in the way. While this means I am not "drawing every day" necessarily, it does mean I am focusing on drawing something fun. I allow myself to do really simple drawings some days and more complex ones other days, otherwise completing the challenge would not be feasible. I agree that a lot of people are doing the challenge well ahead of time so they can do more full-on pieces, and I say good for them, I cannot afford that kind of effort.

Last year I just drew little sketches in my notebook and didn't post them to my social media. I like some of the concepts I came up with and may decide to use those to make a more finished piece sometime, but who knows. I prefer for it to be using that specific prompt on the specific day to literally do it daily. I see all those people doing the most, and I'm not sure how they do it. In my mind, I feel like it's cheating if it's prepped to post on the day of the prompt if you didn't do it that day. Again, the point is daily drawing, right? Anywho... Enough from me haha.

fwiw the "copyright" thing was not just the announcement existing but his legal team started immediately issuing takedown orders against artists who had been selling their inktober work as sketchbooks labeled with "inktober" (particularly with the logo but i think some just saying it) including books they had made for previous years with no warning. supposedly it was done without his input i think? but that's when the other prompt lists like particularly drawtober got popular as an alternative tag because people got afraid the legal team would go after them if they tried to sell work if it was tagged inktober. and people were also kinda mad because the only reason Inktober was big enough to bother to do something like trademark is because of the huge push from other artists so some people felt like he was trying to profit off their work now that it blew up. but yeah he had in the year previous to the legal debacle said digital art (and i think also colored ink and basically anything but black ink work) wasn't valid for the challenge and got a lot of pushback on it already and i think walked that statement back, but it'd obviously already ruffled feathers. i did do it one year with a drawing every day though personally it was like. of any quality in any time so some days it was like a five minute doodle. i do think it's a bit what you want to get out of it, but it is a bit odd to me that it became so just anything goes. i felt like inktober was a bit in response to nanowrimo which also was a bit of a pie in the sky kind of goal for many artists but it was meant to like. be a challenge, so I'm not sure i even think it's that bad if it wasn't all inclusive (though i like seeing the other challenges that popped up that were more inclusive). i guess one of the things that became different about it though is inktober got so popular it started seeming like it was a requirement to participate to get/keep a following. so once it's less just for the personal achievement and more for a real life impact it matters more if it's not accessible? idk anyway I've rambled enough in the comment, mostly just wanted to help give some context about the legal stuff.

It's meant i've made so many amazing new art pals

I think art challenges can be fun and, like you, I love the potential for the community aspect of it. But I think I've had to accept that as a hobby artist with a full time job, it's just not doable for me to do a prompt every day for a month. This year I just picked a few and did those, which was nice but I feel like I kind of missed out on connecting to other people each day

Re: 24:44 with "how extreme it's become" and is it just because your a content creator, LOL it is not. The culture is a HUGE discouragement to even attempting any of these. Every year I've tried I'm had classmates or other people online basically shit talking me for only having 30 min to work on something, not having expensive enough types of inks, complaining if I shared on Discord or they saw my sketchbook I didn't have next weeks drawn yet... Many of these challenges have turned from sketchbook-filling art to must be a 10 hour finished piece which seems counter to most of these challenges ideas. I adored Repostober on Tumblr tho. The base idea is good but there's def become a culture of these must be fully rendered impressive works, rather then here's some ideas for practising and learning. Which is sad.

I would love to do a Inktober/Drawtober kind of thing but I notice that most of the ones I've seen have prompts that are solid characters instead of more abstract ideas. I work mainly in abstracts so it's a challenge because I tend to judge myself harshly on how I do things so while I'm interested in the idea, I wish there were prompts that were more open so I could do my pattern work and still feel like I'm participating
