Fans of Lupe Fiasco, MF DOOM, KRS-One, Eminem, Nas, Loaded Lux, Cassidy, Daylyt, King Los-it's always the same recycled arguments hurled at them. You'd think after years of regurgitating the same points, the critics might come up with something new, but no. Every discussion boils down to two tiresome complaints: "They always think it flew over our heads!" or "They swear they're intellectuals just because they worship such-and-such artist." The truth is, those who adore genuine lyricists aren't pretending to be smarter. They're just appreciating layers of meaning, complex wordplay, and storytelling that others might not grasp. But instead of acknowledging that maybe, just maybe, they missed something, the critics retreat to their comfort zone of mockery and dismissal. It's almost as if the mere existence of thoughtful, intricate music is a personal affront. How dare anyone enjoy art that requires more than a cursory listen to understand! Heaven forbid someone appreciates a verse that references literature, history, or metaphysics. The gall of these fans, thinking there's more to a song than a catchy hook! Clearly, if you can't understand it, it must be pretentious nonsense. So, we circle back to the same banal criticisms. It's easier to belittle what you don't understand than to admit there's a whole world of lyrical depth out there, waiting to be explored. And thus, the critics continue their age-old chant, blissfully unaware of the irony in their repetitive, shallow critiques.

It’s not the fact that they enjoy intricate lyricism which rubs people the wrong way - it’s the way that some fans will view fans of less “lyrical” artists as less intelligent than them due to the music they digest. Which is pretentious. Another way I’ve seen it come across is when a conscious artists’ fans make generalizations about a more mainstream artist, assuming their fan base just isn’t as “woke” as them. It’s just unnecessary gatekeeping that these fans should try and refrain from. And I say that as a hardcore Lupe fan.

It's not that deep, he's clever and layered with it, but the subjects are the same things that weigh on, not all humans, just streets ninjas. And that's why he lacks mass appeal. I mean, it really depends on what kind of fan you’re talking about. Look every artist has annoying fans. Jay Z, Eminem, 2Pac, Wayne……. I like all those dudes but we’ve all seen fans of theirs in common sections that you can tell they’re on some hero worship shit and they put them on this pedestal where they aren’t even human anymore.
