Is Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers Really a Bad Game?

Ойындар

I was caught off guard by the release of Ring Racers, and I was even MORE caught off guard by how incredibly divisive the game is. I was wondering why that was the case, gave it some thought, and wanted to share my conclusions and opinions with the world in a bit of a ramble-style video. Hope y'all enjoy!

My favorite case of "Smash Effect" was to find out that the googly eyed kitchen pot that goes GAD DAYUM and AYO THE PIZZA HERE known as Gutbuster is a real badnik from a single Knuckles Chaotic stage I thought Zipp, Pulseman and Vectorman and Orta, which still surprised me but knew of, were deeo cuts, but that was quite something. Devs have went on record that missing chars from Kart's packaged bonus chars such as Vector, Omega, Hero and Dark Chao and etc aren't intentionally cut but nore so... possibly coming back in a future update as they ran out if time to finish them. It actually adds up with a few other chara seen in previews during the V2 era that aren't seen in RR yet such as Vanessa from Virtua Fighter 4. Also, that super obscure secret is one of my favorite things because it comes from an server inside joke that persisted for two or three years during the wait for the game until it released. A true prophecy fulfilled. All in all, while it can definitely kick you in the balls sometimes (playing it in a lobby where I got tumbled five times in a race actually had me dip hours later into Kart just to freshen up lol, and oh I know well how SS14 can kill you), but it legit has been the first game that has had me hooked to play it at least once DAILY. I spent three weeks straight playing almost nothing but RR, and considering how my attention is sometimes easy to sway, I call that a huge compliment to how tight the single player package with challenges and getting to go fast with all the mechanics clicking like hell had me going insane for the game. I've got all 14 emeralds in Normal diff, gotta continue the challenge you unlock from that, but aside from that one terrible day which tbf was one in 28 otherwise fantastic days or working on maps (I've already got two ready to go when the message board opens), it has been quite the damn ride. I know I won't relive the same first week magic playing after that, aside from getting miraculous first place steals in online, but man, the time I spent with it since then has made the five year wait worth it.

I was bummed out by the initial reception of the game with people dissmissing it based on opinions from others garnered from little playtime. Stuff like that really discourages new people from trying the game and it breaks my heart to see years of hard work and effort go ignored like that. Genuine thanks for spreading the good word on ring racers, this game fricking slaps.

Honestly yeah, the tutorial definitely left me a bit clueless on how I should be using some of these moves, especially the whip, the full dedicated section made it appear much more important than it actually was. My main kind of gripe was definitely with the stages and the CPU's. By all means, a lot of the stages were incredibly good, but a few just felt way too cramped and didn't leave much room for error, had to leave and come back to certain prix's because of this. And the ridiculous rubber banding with the rival cpu really made it feel much worse, I know it's kind of intentional but it feels a bit bullshitty to get sugarcoated by my rival on the final lap because they coincidentally had a humungous speed boost in the last 2 seconds of the lap. Other than that though, it's quite nice, as a pixel artist I love the whole vibe of the game, levels look stunning, the additional window vfx really hit it out of the park and some of the custom soundtracks are absolute bangers. (Sorry for the yapping) But yeah I agree completely with what was said here, very fair review, keep up the good work!

Oh no don't apologize for yapping. I love long insightful comments like these! Clearly a lot of people had issues with the CPUs, since they've been nerfed at least a little every patch so far. They're not as bad now that I've put a lot of hours into the game, but at first it was ROUGH

I didn't know people were so split on this game, but I also didn't consider the SRB2K to RR perspective. On my end, I was comparing this game to Team Sonic Racing, and really enjoying how Ring Racers kart-ifies Sonic gameplay. The character selection was really weird to me when I'd see specific characters, but not others- usually in terms of "we have have Player 2, but not Player 1. Luigi, without Mario." Whisper, but no Tangle. Carol, but no Lilac. At least Surge is the "Player 1" in this context, instead of having "Kit, but no Surge." I'm sure characters like those will either become mods, or be in officially down the line, so it's whatever, just a strange starter pack.

I had always thought about picking up SRB2 Kart, but never got around to figuring out how to install it. Then I saw a dialog compilation of Tails and Eggman discussing paint colors, was impressed at the level of detail, and decided to give Ring Racers a go. As someone who generally considers herself not the best at gaming, all the "This is not a pick-up and play game!" warnings and the complicated mechanics scared me a bit, but I figured I'd try Grand Prix's on Relaxed until I hit a wall. Thus far, I've gotten the credits to roll, haven't gotten so frustrated I wanted to drop it, and I'm just absolutely astounded by how high quality and fun it is for something that's LITERALLY FREE. There's dozens of references I immediately popped off at (the popcorn, Joyopolis, and Regal Ruin stages all come to mind, and even I'm not sure how I recognized Popful Mail the first time I saw her...) I guess years of Mario Kart and Sonic Racing were good for something, too, because picking up the basic controls wasn't nearly as hard as I feared it was going to be. I have yet to try online or the harder difficulties yet, so if that's where people's issues lie, I can't speak to those, (and I'm trying to hold out as long as I can without using the cheat codes, so idk how long it takes to unlock things via the challenges) but all in all, I love this thing.

My personal take on Ring Racers, as someone who wasn't as strongly acquainted with SRB2Kart as some others were, is really just that the rubberbanding on Rivals in particular was obscene (it's still pretty strong I think, but 2.0 and 2.1 were BAD on this front, like REALLY BAD), and the tutorial really needs to be revised and reorganized. The manual now actually existing does help alleviate the tutorial's problems (mostly its failure to cover valuable advanced mechanics like sliptiding and voltage drops), but its structure is inherently very flawed. I feel pretty confident in saying that, at least to start with, most players only need a tutorial for the fundamentals (so the baseline mechanics of steering, drifting, acceleration, etc.), plus the common track design elements. (Different booster types, tripwires, trick panels, springs.) Everything else- yes, including the SPB chase- should be fully separate advanced tutorial sections the player can later *come back to* when they're ready to tackle them. A lot of the reason the tutorial takes so long in the first place is because of *how* it covers subject matter, with the actually vital things interspersed between a bunch of advanced stuff that's *nice to know* but not necessarily going to be useful to a basic player. The worst offender in this regard is *definitely* the SPB chase, that's not something most players will run into immediately due to how rare SPBs are, and it can take a *lot* of attempts to get right, especially since it throws you into a decent-length underwater segment for the first time mid-chase (something that actively made me REALLY MAD when I did the chase). There's definitely a lot to like with Ring Racers! But it has some serious growing pains to deal with, and the barrier to entry is substantially higher than its predecessor.

I don't think the prize catcher has more health on stages 8-14.I think that is because of the varying amount of damage different items can do in each different state as well as the stage difficulty. Can't confirm it, but I tend to break the catcher with just 6 thrown orbinaughts no matter the stage. Example of item states: Thrown orbinaughts do more damage when thrown than orbiting.

@@OlmiOP I've broken claws in those stages with my first item ("orbinaughts" is the triple spike balls, yes? That's what usually did it for me), so they definitely don't have more health. What doesn't help is the "consistent RNG" variable, you can deal higher damage, and it'll happen the same way every time if you repeat your actions, yet a saved replay won't save that extra damage you dealt. I have a buggy replay where I drive slowly through the final special stage letting the claw get away and losing, because in reality I had collected the emerald right at the beginning.

Even though I used passwords for a good deal of the stuff, getting to access a couple of those secrets on my own (like something that lurks in Espresso Lane and something in the depths of Mystic Cave) was absolutely worth doing! Kart Krew absolutely went above and beyond with the game in the past 5 years, and I couldn't be more proud. If some are still sketchy about the Tutorial, go give it a bit more of a chance. There's some pretty fun secrets you can uncover there as much as there are in the rest of the game, as well as a couple of Mystic Shrines. And if you could skip past the Tutorial? I think I prefer SRB2Kart still, but only by a small slither over Ring Racers solely due to the already pre-existing mod support for the old one which makes the game experience very customizable. My experience with Ring Racers so far is very positive overall however with only flaws I can think of being the tutorial which at this point is like beating a dead horse, some minor nitpicky stuff about the game's physics (mainly slopes and those driving up walls sections) and some tracks in the game are rough to play on in comparison to others. (Which SRB2Kart also had that same issue with it's base map selection, which fortunately can be somewhat salvaged by adding custom tracks into the mix to add additional variety). Truth be told, I am still trying to hunt after complains that aren't again, beating a dead horse about the tutorial, or complaints that doesn't devolve into "I don't like it because it's too different from SRB2Kart/or even Mario Kart. I wish the game was more standardized" or "I don't like it because it's too hard". However, I can say at the very least the single player of this game is probably the most fun single-player content I've had in a kart racer for a very long time. As someone who loves secret hunting, getting all the spray cans and Ancient Shrines are a blast for me. Plus without spoiling anything, there's small hints of future content that will be added so there's still plenty of joy to be had. Plus, the game is still young and mod support has only really started. Give it some time and I believe the game can become even better, be it through future updates or mod supports.

INCOMING WALL OF TEXT: Yeah, this is one of those games that takes a fair lot of getting used to before you can truly reap the rewards for doing so. From what I've played of it so far(mainly single player), it's certainly a wild ride. Well, once you get past the long tutorial, which was mandatory upon initial release. Krew did band-aid this, but still. There may be a whole lot of actions and mechanics that players will need to know, but instead of forcing the tutorial on the player, here's what I would've done from the get-go. Give the player an in-game prompt about playing, say, Grand Prix without having played the tutorial first and ASK them whether they want to proceed anyway. If they choose to press on without the tutorial, they can't say they weren't warned, y'know what I mean? Whether the player wants to take baby steps and ease their way in or if they wanna dive right on into the deep end regardless of the risks, It's for them to choose what kind of experience they want IMO. Now as for the new mechanics, rings are solid. I like fast falling, (although I'm iffy about the bounce, if only because it takes away the potential to fast-fall onto a downhill road and go zooming). Spin-dashing is alright. I like that it ignores off-road allowing for quicker recovery. Tricks I initially wasn't so fond of until it was reworked, so you can change where you're facing while in the air. I like that. My only nitpicks with tricks now are the movement being rigid upon doing either a left or right trick. You just move in a straight diagonal line instead of a gradual curve. That and the "trick" is just the character spinning in mid-air in their kart. Where's the backflips, the handstand on the steering wheel, star jumps, striking poses, all that to really bring some flavour to each of the characters so you can really style on the haters in the rear view mirror lol. Can't comment much on the insta-whip. Haven't really been using it. Now unlockables. I can't comment on all of them, but addons, online play and colours are the most questionable of them all from what I've seen. Addons, because modders will generally need to see what this game has to offer before they get on it anyway. For example, if someone wanted to port over SPB Chase(which wasn't in SRB2K) but hadn't played Ring Racers long enough to know SPB Chase is a playable mode, then they'd end up porting something that's already in the game. Not to mention that I consider Krew establishing a proper place for modders to publically share their addons the "unlockable", which still hasn't happened. Online play being an unlockable is unneccesary. This ties into the whole " Krew forcing players to play the game their way" instead of allowing the player to choose their own experience for better or for worse. I get that they don't want players to be discouraged immediately should they choose to go straight online with no prior practise and get consistently left in the dust, but I believe that's their choice to make and with that choice comes benefits and risks regardless of whether the player understands them or not. Fortunately there are passwords to kinda circumvent this, but like you said, shouldn't have needed that to begin with. Unlockable colours in the context of SRB2 and all it's mods(where all the colour palettes are available from the outset) has to be the most lackluster unlockable IMO. It's just a palette swap. However, given the sheer amount of them, it's one that ties really well with the number of courses in the game. Plus I do like the idea of searching for unlockables within the courses and when I look at Ring Racers as just it's own separate game, I don't really mind colours being an unlockable. I still think having to find the followers in each course would've been better for the treasure hunting concept, but this works too. Think I've rambled on enough for now. I do think you gave a pretty fair assessment for Ring Racers here. Pretty nice. Keep doing your thing man.

The way I see it, Ring Racers is one of those fan projects that really encapsulates the essnce of 90s Sega in both the absolute best AND worst ways. There are times where I FUCKING hate this game, but there's even more where I'm so charmed by the presentation and satisfied with overcoming what it throws at me that I'm having a lot of fun and generally prefer the experience to SRB2Kart, which is sumple fun, but like you said, it has a VERY hard time standing out without mods and/or friends to play with. This is definitely a game made with certain people in mind, which are mainly those that love 90s Sega culture and are wiling to embrace just about everything that entails. Not everyone does, but I am one of those people that's pretty into that sort of thing.

i recently got into Ring Racers myself and i will be honest i side with Ring racers over SRB2K for one simple reason SINGLE PLAYER CONTENT as much as i like to race online the server i would play on SRB2K ( Kart's R us ) would not always have others racing all the time so racing against AI that is just as brutal if not harder is Great practice for me granted the rubber banding can be a bit bs but then again i have also rubber banded from FAR Back 8th all the way back into 1st place i also like how there is more mechanics to make it more its own type of kart racer defiantly a high risk high reward type of game i also like how much content there is to unlock yes some are BS but if you find that perticular challenge well to challenging and time consuming ( get 14 Emeralds on Master diiculity ) just use the chao keys you collect from just playing and then there is the modding side of things while not as over the top as SRB2K ...YET from what i have played with really gets me to constatly check the DRRR addons page for any new mods uploaded ( still waiting for a Chracter pack for CTR NF so far we only got crash bandicoot needs the rest of the cast ) i also like how some mods also change the racing game play from adding a hop drift like CTR or a Risky usage of 10 Rings to sorta like Recover from being Karted but at the risk of being closer to Ring debt and the community made tracks personal favorite would be the CTR track pack but that might be nostalgia talking but still looking forward to see what is added cause unlike SRB2K when you used addons in that game your restricted to online races only ( not sure why its not like time attack was connected to the interent ) but in DRRR you can Bloat the game with all the addons you like and All game modes are still avalible to play making the Grand Prix even more Zanny and nutty Specily at Vicuous and Master Difficuly my Only gripes with the game is the late game Sealed star challenges ( just a matter of getting good ) and Encore mode being buggy and proned to crash right now thankfully there is not a Mirror mode in the GrandPrix ....yet but who knows what KartKrew will add in the future

I think the only thing that made me and my friends lost all my interest on this game is how utterly difficult it is, we haven't played to much of the game, we've only played the tutorial, but because of how stupidly difficult it is, we didn't even complete the tutorial and just quited the game because of it Not saying that it's a bad game, it's just...it forces you to utilize EVERY. SINGLE. MECHANIC. Not only that but the game forces you to get better at those mechanics I really tried to play it but...no, just no, as much as i've wanted to love it, it's too much for me.

I am having a really fun time with Ring Racers and most of its mechanics. My problem is the main rival CPU, i think it just needs a rework or simply turn it into a CPU with some extra levels of difficulty and leave it there, the CPUs aren't bad by themselves. At first i despised Death Egg, but after some replays it doesn't feel as long, even if still takes 5+ minutes. I wonder if it would be possible to make something like an adventure mode, the tutorial gives that feeling, teleporters, dialogues, objectives, zones, i think it has potential for something like a CTR campaign. Also, i want my boy Vyse back >:( Cool video👍

@@sergiomendoza251 i find it to be a cool concept. It's just feels like a boss enemy instead of a superior CPU, it's obvious that it was made so that the Rival can be consistant in difficulty for them to reach high points to rivalize the player and make them your first target, but it can be infuriating since they are not just better CPUs, they literally cheat. The first one, because there are characters with like 3 determined Rivals, and the last 2 are pretty bearable and are able to struggle to reach high points, but the first Rival can be quite a pain, since unlike the other 2, it always stays in first place most of the time. It is valid to dislike it

character stay balance is my main concern to be honest in SRB2K, fast characters may have been overall better (as far as most people would say) but slower characters compensated their speed in favor of personally fun as hell gameplay, since they can take better lines, recover better, and charge sparks faster, so there's always a reason to pick one over the other speed category but in RingRacers, seeing those slow characters absolutely FLY on time trials is making me nervous, because that leaves the speed characters with arguably nothing to their name, if slow characters can do what they do and be even better, you're left with no reason to pick a third of the theoretical full roster

ALOT OF YAPPING INCOMING I'd like to preface my opinion by saying that I have played Kart on and off for 2 years and Got the first 7 emeralds in Ring Racers as my "First Impression." Use that info to assess my mediocre skill and scream skill issue if you want. Around 80-90% of players for alot of games don't care about how high the skill ceiling is as long as the skill floor is reasonable. The skill floor for Ring Racers is ALMOST unreasonable. The reason I kept going was because of my previous kart experience so the tutorials (as bad as they were) didn't really bother me. I will 100% percent agree that although Srb2(kart or otherwise)in general is made to be modded out, Ring Racers feels like a standalone game by itself and that's a good thing. My gripes(other than lmao skill issue) come with overall feel, handling, and mechanics that I feel are just unfun or just unreasonably hindering even for average or beginner players. .Bounce mechanics in general. This one's a personal one but I hate bounce mechanics in general in any game for the fact of forfeiting some control depending on said game. .Driving Slopes with no Rings is miserable and have me feeling like Sisyphus .Stairs feel bad and slippery to drive on compared to Kart. .Genuine track jank. Sure, It was also around in Kart and I know Ring Racers is new. However, it's so damn frustrating when driving off a ramp doesn't send you where you need to be for the THIRD time that same race! .Although there was a patch to have the trick system be a direction + a button(Thank god btw) realigning yourself(camera) mid trick still sucks. .Shortcut Gates. I don't mind that they exist. What I DO mind however is getting rocketed backwards when you get unlucky on your item timer. I would MUCH rather take damage and be stopped in place than that momentum killer. Plus we already have Casino night bumpers for that. (speaking of getting launched) .TUMBLING in general! Look, I get attacks in this game hit hard but there should be NO reason why I or other racers shouldn't be able to play the game for around 5-7 seconds straight, unless it's an SPB(Blue shell of this game) or you dying via -20 rings. Sometimes it feels like if you get hit into outer space in this game(ai or otherwise), your race is just over. Whereas in Kart, even on hard speed, you could catch up with the pack relatively quickly. Which is funny to say because you can flat out CHOOSE your items in this game! Don't get it twisted. I find this game good for ALOT of reasons. Sheer content, ease of setup, unlockables, etc. But for me it feels like the more I play, the less fun I have and fixate on said gripes above. It's very demotivating to say the least.

my experience on ring racers was very 50/50 and honestly, i understand some people why don't like ring racers a the all i enjoyed the full game and the tracks, the music, the graphics was awesome i like the tutorial but my only problem was the sega saturn controller hud, and the worst is a change the configuration for a modern racing style all buttons are mess out and that's why i can't understand the tutorial, and less because theres not a xbox/playstation/or pc keyboard to understand the controllers hud, and that is really a bullshit the special stages are sooo fun! but the 6 emeralds and the super emerald, to fun now changed to annoying and frustrating, a lot of them are so hard, really hard and unfair sometimes, losing over and over again and restart cups over and over, force me to use cheats to get the super emeralds, and i feel humiliated the new battle mode are good and bad in the same time is fun the new battle, is similar to srb2battle and battle plus mod but this mode is so broken the bubble shield in this mode is so op and the hosts don't ban this item (2.2 balance a bit this item but still broken) you can be killed so easy by this item and you can't recovery you can lose all you bumpers and get bullied the hitcombos, was unfair in race, in battle is much worse, you can do anything, and you can't parry when you get hit, only you can watch how the others bullied you and is some one use super flickies, is may worse needs to get more balance this but i don't feel kkd gonna balance a underrated mode (in srb2kart in 2019-2020 there are not any battle server and was very sad...) and on race the bad things are the the electric walls, the physics in some maps are annoying and if you get is worse the hitlag some times the bots are soo broken and some levels the rings are all over the place and is feels a additional artificial speed and very more things on this game and sadly some of them kkd will not balance so the only hopes are the divided community even this game divide my friends because nobody like ring racers for X specific thing the only hope solves ring racers is the drrr-noire build all my friends prefer play noire than the vanilla game because fixes the annoying things that's ringracers have and honestly... i prefer play noire than the vanilla game

i still getting hopes for ring racers maybe a year more the community will fix and get better the game, with or not drrr-noire when gets fully released and i will honest, as a srb2kart fan... the game is now obsolete like you said, ring racers is a complete game (is still incomplete ring racers because are missing a lot of things) but compared to srb2kart, kart have only, tracks, a few characters, and battle, is a arcade game, and ring racers have a lot, A LOT and is way more complete game and kart will not dead, is gonna move for a better place is very early but i hope the community will get all the things from srb2kart to ring racers, like srb2, the community brings back the old versions (mostly) to 2.2, and 2.3 gets released the community will do the same but in 2.3 now ring racers have a custom mode support like srb2 2.2 and maybe is the community is going to make a "srb2kart racer" "srb2kart battle" and gets back the old maps to ring racers i porting srb2kart all maps to ring racers, i convert all maps to udmf and i doing bot support, add the old textures, music, and getting some help to get finished the port srb2kart is not dead, is going to get a fress air :3

@@OlmiOP i think letting you pick your item was a deliberate choice that goes in tandem with the mechanics of ring management and the fact that they're both on the same key, and that items take priority. mario kart will give you a random item, and it's on the player to use it at the best time. ring racers will give you the time to use it (as soon after you hit the box as you can), and it's on you to pick which item would be best right at that moment, because not using ring boost makes you so much slower and trying to hog good items so punishing.

What I hate about this game is it adds all these mechanics and ask you to master them, and then punishes being in high positions by making sandbagging so powerful and facing first place with certain things that have no counterplay. Jawz are so spastic you often can't block them, shrink beams often cover the entire track, and the SPB punishes you even when you're not getting hit by it. The person who is essentially griefing the lobby gets first and you get somewhere in the back-half. Its even like this at high-level play. So if you wanna play casually you get slapped with a donowall of a tutorial and a ton of incredibly frustrating mechanics like tumble and hitlag. If you wanna play competitively you get fucked over by someone driving backwards, getting a shrink, going 10000 FU/T to pass you on lap 3, and then for good measure a jawz spikes you backwards at the end anyway. The overcomplicated driving also adds too much variance in how people drive, and the speed narrows interaction windows far too much. My favorite part of kart is tailing someone for a while, predicting their movement, and sniping them to pass them. That interaction does not exist in DRRR, at least not intentionally. Everyone's lines are so whacky that its nigh impossible to actually read what they'll do, and you have a tiny window to make your play in the first place. To make matters worse you have to dump your item to use rings, and since you always want to use rings, you never have an item for more than a second or two. If you hold, the person ahead of you pulls farther ahead, and you lose your window. Switching between the two games, I get more interesting item play in 1 or 2 races of kart than I do in 6 hours of DRRR. This game is so ungodly frustrating to me because it really feels like it lost the plot. The worst part is a lot of these complaints and more I still share to this day, were brought up during DRRR's development and then discarded because we didn't have the game. Now that we have the game, the developers are apathetic to fixing all but the most glaring issues, they don't even agree a lot of them exist. Certain members of the core community are also so overwhelmingly loyal to the developers that they'll harass people for even discussing these problems. It's always been like that, but its only gotten worse upon DRRR's release. The developers are surrounded by yes-men, and they even have them within their own cliques. That just makes it all the more frustrating. This game would be so much better had the devs just handled criticism a bit more honestly. This game is what happens when nobody is able to tell the "ideas guy" no.
