Is Death the End? - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon
Friends, on this Fifth Sunday of Lent, our Gospel is John’s story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. Let’s face it: we are all haunted by death. No matter what we accomplish in this life, we know that it will all be swallowed up in the end. The fear of death broods over the whole of life. But does death have the final say?

I’m sorry for your loss. My condolences. Words cannot describe the pain of death. We struggle to understand the course of life. When I lost my mom I felt completely detached from reality. Time doesn’t feel real. I know one day I will see her again and that gives me the courage to confront life with confidence. All the things I do I do them with love. ❤ All we can do until we see our loved ones again. 🙏
My wife and I both lost our fathers this past year. Our dear friends lost their 10-year-old tragically as well. The belief that Jesus calls them forth from the grave gives me great hope.
My son, Solomon, died suddenly last July. I miss him very much. But I felt from the beginning that he did not cease to be. I am still connected to his true being through my heart, thanks be to God. I stumbled into the Catholic Church five years ago (confirmed four years ago) after an agnostic upbringing, and much fruitful (and much unfruitful!) searching for what I can now name as God. I cannot help but feel that God was preparing me well in advance for the incredibly painful event of my son's death. Being able to pray to Mary in particular was of incalculable comfort. Thank you Bishop Barron for this beautiful homily and for your beautiful explaining of the Catholic faith. I appreciate your not "dumbing down the faith". But I most of all thank God for his mercy and infinite love. May my son be always with him. Praise Jesus.🙏🧡🌿

@@liannesadler5771 hi lianne, if you want to be in contact with God, (or however you name the force of good in the world as you experience it) I would say just mentally make that request to that being. No money is required. It is indeed a sad and terrible thing that the vulnerable are sometimes - often - taken advantage of by those out for their own gain. But don't let that stand in the way of reaching out to that which is truly good. I pray you will find your right path. Peace.

@@liannesadler5771 We do this. We could choose not to, but we do. Not all of us the time, but we do at times all. What use is money to those who believe an eternity of abundance is the truth? If the poor are to be given their help, it must come from somewhere. If their is scarcity, we grow out of ourselves by sharing what we have for others out of it. If God did not care, He would not have joined us, and there would be nothing but despair ultimately, for death and evil then do win justice dies and we all die and there is nothing but the void of nothingness to stare at in eternity. As we see for those who do not believe in such hope as in the Cross of Christ, God dying out of infinite love for us and joining us in our pain; we otherwise see a short, gluttony and distraction, clinging to shadows, pretending beauty and goodness are not dying over and again here in the world until death takes them and us. If God does not reign over all, Death and Nihilism do. We can rail against them all we want, but we will always lose. Do you have another answer for this? If you wish to know where God is, go to the suffering and the poor and care for them out of what you have. Expecting nothing in return, but for sheer love of them as another in need. Then there, He shall be and you shall see and find Him, if you truly seek Him.

@@liannesadler5771 That is not to say, there is not a grave issue of the trusting and innocent being abused by those who ought to be shepherding them. This is clearly seen in the Old Testament among the kings and high priests and in false prophets. In the New Testament as well, and in the Apostolic Age is referenced clearly as charlatans, the greedy, and the lazy in Christian leadership are all warned against in the Didache. Yes this occured and occurs in even the Church. Was Christ Himself not sold for 30 pieces of silver by one of His own Apostles, to the people He was coming as the King, Prophet, and Messiah, the fulfillment and perfection of the Law and Prophets of, and turned over to the Cross by its leaders out of envy, fear, and ignorance. Was He also not though found of no fault, put to a spectacle, torment, death, and attempted shame by a ruler who knew He had done no crime, to appeal the fury of a crowd? If one is truly a Christian, they know and believe thus. God knows full well by both knowledge and experience the tortures of this world. And again, we did it. We must call such as these to justice, most of all, when the wolf preying upon the sheep is us.

None of the quotes suggested spoke to him, so we asked if we could have our own words. Looking at many other sayings, Dad decided on one we see today. What an amazingly powerful message. I love how the Church puts these wonderful scriptures in front of us during Lent, Easter and throughout the year. And I thank you Bishop Barron for giving a true homily and helping us to take them into our lives and marinate on what is there and apply them here and now.... As a former Protestant, I can say they are on to something with their emphasis on the Bible. Now take that love for the Scriptures and look at them through the lens of the Catholic Church and its teachings, and you get the complete, rich picture of how much God loves mankind and how He delights in us and went the whole way to win us back for himself... Jesus wept is my favorite verse. Of how short it is, a lot has to be said in this one verse. And speaks to all in many ways. Simply beautiful and shows the humanity god shares with us.
This miracle was the straw that broke the camel's back for Ciaphas, he immediately knew Jesus was indeed the promised Messiah and so it set forth the series of events that led to his passion and death. We adore you oh Christ and we praise you: Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world.
I met a man yesterday. He left the Church because of the scandal. I could here in his voice that he wanted to come back. He died in spirit. But I believe the Lord will raise him up from the dead now in spirit and bring him out of his grave. Then He will raise all, whom He loves so much, from death. . . For God gave HIS only Begotten Son to die for us. . .and He raised, and continues to raise us! 🙂
This is so beautiful, so faithfilled, so hopeful. You delivered this sermon 4 months ago. Yet very recently had to give up your own mother to death w/ resurrection of living who die in Christ. No doubt Jesus ("tears of God") has wept w/you, your family, & friends, & so do I, as well as many of those who listen to you. Again, may she be there w/the Blessed Mother, praying for us all.
Thank you for your inspiring words in my difficult times

Death is not the end. I don't know if everyone goes to Heaven or only a few people or something else, but I put my trust in the Lord.
There's something powerful when Bishop Barron says the Word of God isn't just descriptive, but creative. And in the context of this story, and the principles of our faith, His Word re-creates us, ultimately drawing us out of death to new life, which we can experience even now. The sense of hope is powerful that, when it seems like all is lost in the midst of death, God raises to new life.
Excellent breakdown of the Gospel!
Incredibly important sermon, for if death was the finality of life what would the meaning of life be. Jesus’s conquered death so that life matters and His love of dying on the cross not only saved us all, but showed us not to fear death, but teach us to realize there is everlasting life. Bishop Barron always a great sermon, but tying it all together today in your homily was your best!
I am the resurrection and the life they who believe in me Will never die

Thank you Bishop Barron for this powerful Sunday Sermon on death!!! The death of Lazarus, the Valley of the Dried Bones, our own fears about death...and how our Loving God can and WILL RISE US UP FROM THE GRAVE!!! I could say that I have had a close encounter with physical death and another that was both physical and spiritual!!! The first I was diagnosed with an adenoid cystic carcinoma at the age of 47. My son was about 12 then. I remember praying one day to the Lord to please keep me alive, so that my son still would have his mother to love and care for him. I thank the Lord that 18 years later I am still here!!! The other encounter, was after having had cancer and we had moved location. I recall that particular day I was feeling tired and lacking hope I felt depressed about my life. For some reason, I decided to get out of the house and breathe fresh air out doors. All of a sudden the wind picked up and was blowing fallen leaves and tumble weeds across the road in front of the house. The wind took a different direction, and came up the driveway where I was standing! The breeze swept my hair gently to the back of me, as I breathed in the wind, I felt the wind refreshing me all over! For a minute I thought I might have been imagining all this! So I looked behind me and saw the trees swaying, side by side in the neighbours gardens. A bush that was in our garden was swaying also because of the wind! Then the wind left, leaving me pleasantly stunned. I remember saying to myself the Holy Spirit is like the wind, not knowing where it will come from or where it will go... Both my husband and son came out to see how I was. Both the depression and tiredness had left!!! I felt as if the Spirit of the Lord had lifted up my dry bones from the arid valley I was living in, and restored my flesh and sinews!!! How GREAT IS OUR GOD???!!! I thank You LORD!!! May the Lord keep blessing and inspiring you Bishop Barron with your Sermons and spiritual mission!!!
I feel very Blessed by youir message, Bishop. TY :) Amen!
God bless you Bishop Barron , what a blessing to have you with us, yes indeed you have made such a difference in my life as well
Thank you Bishop! Very nice speech! I think, that the weeping of Jesus is beautiful and shocking. Seems as if He would like to say many things, but knew, we are not yet ready for more, but He sees our faith in every desperet times of ours, and it touches His heart. That's real faith: believing without understanding everything. And that's exactly what He asks from us. He knows, that our mind is limited, and our beliefs are false many times, and this time He crushes one of them, with giving life to a dead. It doesn't give answer to all our questions, but streghtens our faith in life and resurrection. We still don't know why are things the way they are. Where and how humanity exactly turned to death instead of life? An apple? We don 't know, only that we have his own flesh and blood instead of that apple. We have life over death, because He conquered death. We only know, we are saved. We must focus on God in every bad circumstances. He is our salvation, our happiness, and everlasting life. This is all we need to know right now.
Thank you Bishop Barron, it's encouraging to know our Lord is conquerer of sin and death. Lord free me from fear of death and final judgement.
Whichever Bible verses Bishop Barron takes on, he never ever fails to bring out new depth and new truth. Another amazing and transforming word today, thankyou Bishop.

The thought that death in not the end changes the outlook on life.
Thank you, Bishop Barron. Nourishing sermon, as always. Blessings.
My heartfelt gratitude to you for this homily! I thank Jesus, the living God each day for my faith. With so many close loved ones gone before- it’s His words that make the pain of loss bearable. God Bless you always. 🇨🇦🙏🙏🇨🇦🇨🇦🌹
Thank you, Bishop Barron! God bless you all, my brothers and sisters ❤
'I am the Resurrection and the Life' This gives us hope that there's life beyond....
Maravilloso sermon. Gracias Padre Robert Barron.
If the next Pope would be an American, I would love to have Bishop Barron as the best candidate, but of course he has to be first appointed as Cardinal. 😇Thank you Bishop Barron for your thorough explanations, linking the Old with the New Testament and most of all stressing out that God's words are not merely descriptive but are creative, in a way affirming the Eucharist. God bless you and your ministry. 🙏

I agree that BB would make a fine pope, but I'd pray that he'd still be able to do all the teaching he does that so helps all of us and enriches the world.
Emmanuel. Fully god and fully man.
God bless you, Bishop Barron!
The greatest gift... one's life for one's friend...I am the resurrection and the life...he who believes... eternal life... God wept...look how he loves the sibling saints Martha Lazarus Mary... July 29... releasing us from the shackles of sin and death... thank you Bishop Barron and Word on Fire crew...
Come, Holy Spirit, come increase our faith, hope and love. Ps 130:2, Jn 11:25 Jesus said: “I am the resurrection. Anyone who believes in me, even though that person dies, will live, 26 and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” 😇Jesus, I love You!
One of my favourite bible stories since I was a kid, I love this story. Such an amazing metaphor about how death isn’t the end/has no hold over us and how there’s no need for us to be scared of death at all and to be at peace knowing there’s everlasting life following it. Very true how god unbinds us and liberates us from the fear of death. When jesus wept I can relate about my grandmother who has passed due to cancer. But this verse is such a good reminder that death is merely a word and everlasting life follows suit. We know that god promises us everlasting life and there is nothing to be afraid of. His heart breaks with us but we know that this is not the end. Love the part about gods word not only being descriptive but also having effect and power behind it. We must trust in his decisions and words as he will always take care of us and will always be there for us. Thank you for the wonderful story and message behind it, really needed to hear this one as my grandmother has passed away recently and this story brings a sense of peace and understanding/closure.

if it makes you feel better, good.I personally think you just die.I consider it like falling to sleep ..
I always remember that God can not tell a lie. What ever He says, "is". If He says "Let there be light". There is light. If Jesus says "Lazrus come out". He comes out. Jesus proves He is God by His many deeds. When He says "This is My body". The bread at Mass becomes His body. Keeping Bishop in my prayers. God bless him and all that help him in his work of bringing us closer to God.
You never distinguish between belief/faith and facts, Bishop.

What facts are you looking for? Reason and logic can bring you to the edge of faith; there are thousands of years worth of philosophical thought on religion. In the field of logic, if the logical argument is set up as true, and the premises are true, the conclusion *must* be true. Philosophy/logic is another way for understanding truth about how the world works. The Bishop has discussed these topics before.
“But now, thus says the Lord, who created you, Jacob, and formed you, Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name: you are mine.” Isaiah 43:1 ❤️🩹❤️
Every Sunday Morning I seek out your homily. Today is no different ever since early 2022 starting with the three levels of temptation, then the invasion of Grace and then most telling on October 30 - Zachheus - Jesus entered his house took over the whole house every aspect of your life. This rattled my world. Now it has been the past three Samaritan woman and her identity, the blind can see and now the dead can live on. I am grateful for your informative and instructive reality of Jesus in our life.
