Does cycling cause erectile dysfunction in males? Is getting a numb penis while cycling a bad thing? And, can cycling lead to an increased risk of getting prostate cancer? In this video, Si put these questions to leading urologist Anthony Koupparis, who gave some very interesting answers around the subject. The video gives mostly good news (we can all let out a sigh of relief) but also highlights some instances where further medical attention would definitely be advised. We hope you can all learn a lot from this video and continue to enjoy riding your bikes.

when I started cycling I had a traditional road cycling saddle - Selle San Remo and I would certainly have numbness and pain after longer rides of 1h - it certainly stopped me from longer rides - I purchased a Selle San Marco Max Flite with center cut-out an have NEVER looked back - numbness was GONE - rides of 3-4 hours followed - I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the central cut-out for everyone experiencing these problems - it was a world of difference

A flat, firm saddle like a Selle Royal Seta (not expensive) or equivalent, that is appropriately sized to provide correct support to your particular sit-bones. This effectively elevates the perineum out of the fray. Also, a 3-ish degrees nose-down attitude of the saddle keeps the saddle nose a little bit lower and again, out of the equation. Once I discovered this not so obvious solution, all discomfort became a thing of the past. Beyond this, correct crank length is another significant aspect of this situation. A crank that is too long causes over extension of the knee and consequently, exaggerated movement of the hips. I'm 5'10" (178cm) and 170mm cranks are vastly more comfortable for me than the typical 172.5 or 175 that come as standard fitment on frames recommended for my stature.

I've noticed that this happens over long distances, long duration with a single posture. Easiest way out, tilt the seat downwards in front by a bit and it should ease the pressure down there. For MTBs and hybrid cycles it shouldn't be a problem based on their cushioning and shock absorbers.

Dudes need to get serious and get over any hangups about 'checking down there'. I lost a cousin just over a year ago, at 53 to IHD, a condition that killed his father at 47..and our fathers are twins, I just turned 51. Hello..there's my wakeup call. Whilst I was getting a heart check, the doc says I best get 'the other check'. So that took care of a dilemma (in my own mind) of a digit in the widget, or do I just wing it and hope for the best. Knowing is better than wondering. Let's stop dying for a sake of a little bit of self imposed pride.

Thanks Si for a great presentation on a subject that pretty much all men are or should be concerned about. As we get past that all encompassing 50 mark it's really vital to have a check up once every couple of years to every year as time marches on. Research and treatment for prostate cancer has improved by leaps and bounds in the last 30 years and although it led to our father's passing, it's good to know that his sons (i.e. my brothers and I) don't have to suffer the same fate. I've experienced the numbness in the 'undercarriage' while riding my bike on rollers and solved it with a few layers of chamois like soft cloth between me and the saddle. Well done with an important subject!

The disease is much more common in countries where meat and dairy products are dietary staples than in countries where the basic diet consists of rice, soybean products, and vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, cole slaw, or sauerkraut. The underlying factor linking diet and prostate cancer is probably hormonal. Quit the meat dairy and eggs and you will cut your chances of getting prostate cancer short.

Yes. I went from a Fizik Antares which came with my new bike to a Specialized Power which has a big cut out. That solved the problem. But I used to have pressure and a little numbness before on all of my bikes. What was helping there was a small adjustment in the saddle position, maybe lower the saddle a bit or tilt down the nose slightly and of course use every possibility to pedal out of the saddle, for example accelerating after a narrow corner or passing over bridge.

This is a very helpful and informative upload. I'm 65 and 3 years ago diagnosed with a trace of what appears to be a benign prostate cancer, it hasn't advanced and my PSA levels are fine. Up until 10 years ago I cycled quite a lot. Now I've just ordered a new bike as I miss cycling and want to get fit again, so the reassurances given in the video are great news. I think I will however invest in a Brooks saddle, which should afford greater comfort and minimise any potential irritation.

Excellent video. When I first started riding I also had a numbness issue that lasted just over a month. Needless to say it was rather disconcerting. The problem was not the bicycle but rather my tendency to slide forward on the saddle. I've since been much more conscious of maintaining a proper seating position.

The next operation will involve taking tissue from inside my mouth and rebuilding the urethra . I want to cycle as it used to keep my weight in check and all the health benefits it brings . Ive not cycled for 4 years now but my desire is still there to get out and munch some miles , but doctors advice DONT CYCLE !
