Thanks to Andrew at Watch Direct for giving me this review unit. It makes a fairly strong case for itself if you are looking for a Japanese big brand daily, but the dial is not on par with Seiko. In fact, it might take some time for Citizen to catch up, but I am going to enjoy watching them try. Cheers, Jody

In Japan, Citizen has always been considered the 'little brother' to Seiko. This always kept Citizen hungry. Seiko has become complacent and lazy. Citizen is making the better watches these days with excellent quality control.

I disagree with that, Japanese watch fans get far more excited over complicated quartz citizen movements than Seiko automatics. Seiko is just perceived as a cheap automatic watch you buy in shopping mall there. As a Seiko fan, I was a bit disappointed when I realized that, but it also opened by eye to how far citizens quartz movements have come.

@@djdelarosa25I honestly have the same feeling about seiko instead of citizen. For some reason seikos are so nice but I just cant seem to like it more than citizen models, I like orient stars and citizens more than seikos, also I do have some watches with the seiko nh35 movements and I hate those movements cause they're so bad in accuracy, all of them are 25 to 30 secs off a day.
In the US, Citizen has been the much more ubiquitous and advertsed "mall" brand for 30+ years. They absolutely body Seiko in sales here. That Blue Angels chrono spinning on a turntable in Macys when I was a kid is why im here today.

Exactly my first thought! I'm generally a big fan of Citizen watches, but last 15y or so it suffers that same issue like most of bigger vendors. For year it's almost impossible to buy an affordable, nice looking smaller watch, be it mechanical or quartz. Not sure, who started this fad, that 41-42 mm is a new default case size for everything and maybe after some of moaning, they will now create one, two smaller models from hundred. It should be other way around IMO. My wrist is touch over 18cm, but still appreciate great fit of 36-38mm vintage watches for daily wear, same for many people around me. Of course at a diver, tactical or some busy chronometer - big size makes a sense there. Moreover larger cases require very careful design to successfully accommodate small diameter movement - like with date or day-date position against dial indexes or numerals - often you can see design horrors there :)).
I got my first Citizen year 1990. It was a Promaster Aqualand C022, and I am wearing it still today. A batterychange of the three batteries each 3-4 years only. An excellent watch IMHO.

As the self confessed Citizen fan, I think the cocktail wins this one comfortably. However, a commendably good effort and I feel this has been a test of the water for Citizen to guage reaction.
So glad you are reviewing this model. The history of the Parawater is pretty cool. They left them floating with buoys and people found them floating in the ocean.
i like it love the blue textured dial and the fact that its a limited edition at a good price sets it apart

Citizen needs to do a sub-40mm version of this. I really like the additional lume pips; makes it more useful than than the Seiko; it's a shame that it fades pretty quickly. The Seiko you have does seem to have a much better looking dial. I'm actually wearing my SRPE43 today.
Citizen was my first watch. My dad bought it for me when I was 5. Blue dial, manual wind. Wish I still had it.
I got my first Citizen about a week back, the NK0000-10A (JDM watch)and it is the same case (different finishing) and movement and at the price I paid it was very hard to beat by any Seiko offering. It is also the more classic (vintage?) look with polished hands and a blued second hand, silver/white sunburst dail. I absolutely love it! Nice, video as always, Jody. But we would have to agree to disagree.
Ive always loved Seiko watches...but Citizen have passed Seiko long ago. Citizen's dive watches are absolutely fantastic and their Eco drive models are really nice. I still love Seiko watches but to me, Citizen is much better in terms of Quality, variety and style
Good video and review! I agree with all of your points. My initial impressions are good. I’d like the dial, hands and indices. However, the diameter and lug-to-lug are too large. The bracelet needs a greater taper and a better clasp with more micro adjustments. And, of course, I would like to see a sapphire crystal.
I just picked up one of the Unite with blue promaster limited editions and the dial is sensational in the direct sunlight. I dare say it would be up there for dial of the year Jody!
That is a lovely little piece. If you look at it as a GADA, it might be a fantastic addition. It’s more understated than the Presage line, but I’m not sure that’s a bad thing… Presage feels like a dress watch. The Citizen feels a little sportier.
I have the green dial. Its true, around the house, I can't see much definition on the dial, but when i wear it during a drive, the sunlight brings that dial to life 🤩
i have a tsuyosa and it's incredibly well made and sized universally. their eco-drive line though seems to be produced for those w/ large wrists.
My Citizen H-145 eco-drive is radio-controlled and has a beautiful navy blue tuxedo dial. Finish, alignment, all spot on. Great daily driver and you never have to adjust it or change a battery. Yes the bracelet/clasp is janky, but that’s the only drawback in my view.

I wore a radio-controlled Citizen for nearly ten years. I wore out five leather watch bands and finally got a steel one. I wear it occasionally now. Still sometimes gets the radio signal.
Citizen needs to drop some serious money at the design department though. Seiko was virtually always sexier
I have a few Citizens and will be happy to see if they start making some interesting dials and give Seiko some competition on that front.
I agree with your conclusion on this dial, but I still think that Citizen Campanola line has the best dials out there. Tetsuo Gido's lacquer dials are breathtaking.
I love the way the two arrowheads at 12 look the same size as the others but its all let down by the chopped arrowhead at 3... Love the finish and proflle of the case but the bezel, glass and hands look like a 4:45 Friday afternoon rushed selection fron the Citizen parts database. The Seiko dial, hands, bezel and glass look so much more considered.
Interesting topic. I have indeed seen some amazing Citizen dials. Worth watching. I WILL say that my 2004 Citizen Perpetual Calendar Eco-Drive bought new in '04 and kept ever since has one of the best BRACELETS of any watch I own, and that includes my watches in the $2-4k range. Yup, I said it.
Check out the new Citizen BN0166-01L. Absolutely stunning dial. The combo of blue and green is stunning.
Currently wearing my Citizen Kuroshio '64 Limited Edition with the Cream Dial that was only available on the Asian market to 1,959 Pieces in each colorway(Signifying the year 1959 when Citizen released their first water resistant watch, the Parawater.) I absolutely love it, and it was a steal on Chrono24 for $275 USD. I definitely think Citizen has caught up to Seiko
My favorite out of Citizen and Seiko is whichever one makes one of these Cocktail time style dress watches in an appropriate dress watch size. 36mm please!
I think it's beautiful. I love the dial texture and minimal text.
Imo that watch looks a little bit dull. But in general i think Citizen took the Place of Seiko. With Seiko going higher in Price, Citizen is now the Champion kn affordable Watches. The Fujitsubo, the Promaster line and the Tsuyosa are stunning and big seller. Seiko used to be the best bang for your buck when you could buy an Alpinist for 450 $ and an SKX for 200 $. But nowadays Citizen is the Champ of affordable Watches.

Orient: "hey what about me???"
The answer simply is Citizen group NOT Seiko! I love Citizen and Bulova. I could care less about Seiko's devotion to Dials its quality control Seiko lacks. So thank you for rising above the one eyed Seiko supporters and giving Citizen the love it deserves. I love Citizen Eco drive, accurate and reliable and still cutting edge in its technology. I will be buying this Citizen watch in the cream, it is glorious. Keep up the good and balanced reviews. Oh Jody I do own some Seiko's but rarely wear them. 😉
Hi Jody! I have a titanium version of that same clasp. Is there an alternative/ direct replacement in titanium that adds more micro adjust? (Don't really care if pressed or milled) Thanks!
Great review 👍 I think you were right on all counts. It's definitely not in the same league as Seiko, although still has a place in the market at the price. I didn't get the urge to get on the Web to get one where as the Seiko review I did. 👍
Jory Goodman (The Time Teller) has an interesting opinion specifically about this type of dials.
Some great design and value in the Eco-Drive line. No battery required.
Looking at that Citizen, it doesn't really 'pop' in any way to my eye. It has a sort of 'generic' feel to it - hard to put into words. But when you brought out that beautiful Seiko towards the end of the video, that really sealed the deal for me. Citizen make some excellent watches, no doubt, but if they want to go head-to-head with Seiko on the dress/cocktail type, they have - as you said - quite a way to go ! Great video !
I love Seiko, and I dare say most subs feel the same. However the constant alignment issues, poor spec vs price isn't winning me over anymore. All the Seiko's I now own are older models because they still represented good value.

Jody, nice review. This would be a great "office" watch. Needless to say I'm a big Citizen dive watch fan and have numerous. As far as Seiko goes I bought one a few years back and was greatly disappointed, and it's only been worn a couple of times. Sadly it really turned me off to the brand.
That's a beautiful watch. For the price I would avoid it because of the mineral glass crystal though.
My experience with Seiko and Citizen only in their entry model, Seiko 7s26 movement is used to gain some minutes in a week time compared to minus some minutes from miyota movement from Citizen.
Try getting hold of one in the UK though? I have no idea why Citizen dont stock a fuller range in the UK.
What a beautiful dial of the citizen shown at the beginning of the video. Does anyone know the reference number of it? It looks like the vintage Seiko Superior Morpho.
If you would like to look at more interesting citizen dials, it would be great if you could review the seriest8 MOP dial.
I got all excited before I saw the size. It really needs to be 38mm, it also needs to have sapphire at that price.
Comparing these two beloved brands is quite hard. They both have their own shortcomings. Usually with citizen is a smaller date window and a smaller crowns. I have both citizens and seikos. I guess they both offer diff products for diff customers and theyre both awesome brands!

Is the lume a mint colour? I always associate that with fairly low quality old lume. The dial looks good with a macro lens but I'd guess most of the time I wouldn't be able to appreciate it.

I recently purchased a Citizen EO2021-05. I've been waiting years for a small diver, there was no way I was paying the asked prices for an SKX013. Citizen knocked it out of the park, it's an amazing watch. The face, hands & case are gorgeous, even the strap suits it. I have no idea why Citizens aren't talked about as much as Seikos, the tech and build quality are phenominal.
Although I really like the cocktail time that you have in the video, I often think they’re trying to hard with some of their other dials. I think this one compares more favorably to a poor man’s Omega aquaracer. And in that comparison $350 US is outstanding for what you’re getting… Thanks, Judy.
I love my Citizen except the clasp. Spot on review Jodi. Thank you
That is beautiful, in my opinion. Dimensions are also just right for me for that style of watch. would have that in a heartbeat over a Seiko.
Hey, how come you are not getting the yellow watch box? It should come with it...
Seiko prices have crept up over the years, while citisen has just kept up plodding along making decent watches. So yes, I agree they have become the better value for money watch.
Now better? Always has been 😉

what is best of eco-drive citizen or seiko automatic watch? 🤔
It wasn’t until relatively recently that I really started appreciating Seiko. If you go to a store like Macy’s that carries both brands, compare the offerings of both without a bias for mechanical movements, it’s clear that dollar for dollar citizen has much higher quality. The thing is that citizen does have some gaudy and/or cluttered designs
Excellent review Jody. Not my thing, but that Citizen is a beautiful piece for sure

Love the t-shirt. I also love my Citizens they are amazing!
I also have these watches ⌚️ I fell in love with them so I bought both colours ❤
If this watch had been a Seiko the indices would be patterned on actual bird feathers that wafted past the design studio in Japan.
It would make a good every day watch. With the narrow bezel, I'd prefer it at 37mm.
Love my Citizen Watches 🥰 all 8 of them 😍
i got a ecodrive chronograph from my girlfriend for christmas 4 years ago and i wear it everywhere except to work where i wear my timex expedition chronograph, don't know why i have to wear a chronograph to work as a painter but it looks really nice when i'm 40 feet up painting the dental work on a 200 year old house
We are spoiled by Chinese watches giving us sapphire for pennies. But I do remember when I first got into watches and was strictly into eco-drives, I found both the AW1490-50A Chandler in titanium with sapphire, as well as the AR3070-04L Stiletto with sapphire, each for under $200. I suppose Citizen is charging a premium for their autos, since the market is kinda forcing them to send a couple westward, even though you can get other-brand watches with better Miyota movements and specs for less $$. There's never been a weaker moment for Citizen to try to make a splash in the auto world, so they need to bring it big time, and that's not ever really seemed to have been Citizen's thing.
I have been looking for a citizen eco drive dress watch and most are not cheap. Most are super boring too. I like dress watches with leather straps that are soft and comfortable. I wonder if citizen will have it, they are a huge company. So is Seiko.
I am wearing an an 80's Promaster as I watch this. The secret is out I guess. I do think Seiko is coming out of their nap though.....
From what I could tell, getting into watches just couple of years ago, Citizen is better, and only more clearly as the more I hear of these Seiko issues that never seem to be corrected.
I think the parawater dials from Citizen were the most beautiful ever made. So, what else is new 😊
I'm literally sitting here wearing my favorite watch, a black gen1 Skyhawk, U600 movement.
For a great looking dial for little £££ have a look at the Timex Q Falcon Eye
This might be the Presage I have been looking for ...
I’ve been thinking of buying a citizen eco drive or a Seiko solar for a while. The range of Seikos is very disappointing whereas citizen have a much bigger and much better looking range, plenty of which have sapphire crystal. I think I’m going to wait for their forthcoming eco drive 365 which looks stunning in my opinion.
I'm dropping the hammer on the black dial version. For the ultimate retro styling, an expander bracelet 😮 it'll look retro chique
Citizen watches are some of my favorites
Yeah I have the newer cocktail time like your Irish one Jody the Old Clock (dark blue). The Citizen gets no where near it. Gets a ‘must try harder… see me’ 😆
Bought my kuroshio 64 for 270sgd earlier this month during 6.6 from citizen on shopre and I love it very much, however my friend mentioned how the dial looks like a butthole and I can't unsee that
