😇This is the scripture comes to mind when i think of our cessationist brothers....ACTS 19...."Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They answered, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." So Paul asked, "Then what baptism did you receive?" "John's baptism," they replied. Paul said, "John's baptism was a baptism of repentance.

I think those are two different but related issues. One was a salvation issue (being born again by the indwelling of the spirit) and the other, public display of charisma gifts. The two are not synonymous, but on occasion, as in the acts, concurrent. But you don't need the gift of tongues to prove you are Spirit filled/born again, nor does speaking in tongues prove you are born again/spirit filled (even witches and spiritists are capable of such ecstatic utterances.) Not everyone gets that gift or even wants it.

Lester Sumrall - One of the stories told to Lester and is written in the books is told by Smith Wigglesworth. Smith Wigglesworth says he was having a healing prayer line. There was a man there with his Doctor who was dying of stomach cancer. Smith Wigglesworth was told by the Spirit to punch the man in the stomach as hard as he could, did so, and the man died??? The Doctor shouted, “You killed him! We will sue you!” Smith Wigglesworth just kept walking, and shouted back with his accent, “He’s healed!” The man who had died then came back to life, healed, excited, and thanked Smith Wigglesworth for praying for him. Satan does not do real creative miracles like God does!

Such a great discussion 👏 I was raised in a Baptist church and the Pentecostal church scared me if I'm honest. People flailing and falling and speaking gibberish, BUT as an adult who loves God's word and believes it to be 100% true, I DO believe in the gifts of the spirit and His work THROUGH us. I have asked the Lord for the gift of tongues, but so far it hasn't happened. I DON'T believe that you just speak gibberish out of emotion though. I believe it MUST come from God. In any event, I don't understand why Christians deny what is clearly taught in God's word. I also believe that we're coming into a time of great outpouring of God's spirit, so maybe that's why the attacks are increasing?? Thank you for this discussion! It was needed! Ps. I don't believe every charismatic is truly exhibiting God given gifts either. I believe some are frauds for personal gain, but the extreme the other way is just as bad and damaging.

In the 80's I went through a period where some powerful people were trying to falsely accuse me. I prayed in tongues daily because there is no way to know everything that those who work for Satan are doing against you. The Holy Spirit knew what they were doing in secret. I poured my heart out to God. I didn't know if praying in tongues was making any difference because I didn't know anyone who had first hand experience in praying when your back is actually against the wall. I reached a point where it looked like there was no longer any point in praying so I immediately stopped praying for God's deliverance. Within moments of reaching that point a series of events that defied all odds began happening and they kept happening for days afterward. I was brought to tears because so many things were happening in such a short period that it became obvious that God was intervening in my life.

I just recently saw a video by Justin Peters where he was literally mocking Paster Troy Brewer, who is such a kind hearted man of God doing so much good in the world. I actually see that he was manifesting a demon while mocking troy so wickedly. I confess...I have a strong dislike for Justin Peters. His understanding of the great commission is James 4:11... instead of NOT speaking against a brother, he does so for the WHOLE pagan world to see. If you are busy about your Father's business, you wouldn't be casting dispersions on your brother in front of the entire world.

There are some Cessationists who mean well. But I think a majority are trying to "evangelize" Christians out of Christianity. They are more concerned about creating divisions in the Church than at winning souls from the outside World. It's clear to see who means well. You head over to Paul Washer's channel, it's full of evangelism and teachings. You head over to others' channels, it's all about poking holes in others' doctrines.

What jumps off the page to me is this: how can MacArthur be so passionate against women speaking in the church or the trans/gay crowd attempting to change scripture to fit their narrative, while he does the exact same, even worse, as he claims signs and wonders have ceased? He aspires to make about 1/3 of the new testament impotent. How blind of him not to see the absolute hypocrisy of this. When confronted, he just speaks louder and more condescendingly. Thank you for exposing them.

I appreciate this discussion and presentation of cessationism. I was married to a man who loved Jesus with his whole heart and had a huge influence in our community, but he was a Calvinist. The interesting and difficult part of that belief system was, once you are saved, you are always saved. Doesn't matter how you live, how you present the gospel of Jesus Christ, you are going to heaven no matter what. No growing spiritually, no need to read and understand scripture, no accountability; the list goes on. Plus each individual is responsible for saving people who are not saved. Discernment and listening to Holy Spirit is frowned upon. Half of his family was Southern Baptist and the other half Church of Christ. Loving caring family, until it came to God, the work of the cross and the infilling of the Holy Spirit; then it was all out war to who was right. One of the largest churches in our community was know for their meanness and judgmental ways. Precious people, but so led astray. I know my husband is in heaven, I've seen him there.

I so appreciate this discussion! I have noticed that those people who do not operate in the gifts of the Spirit, seem to lack passion in reaching the lost. The things that they occupy themselves with, which they call ministry, is really nothing more than busyness; there is no transformation of those being brought from death to Life. Daniel, you amaze me, or should I say the Lord in you amazes me. I think it was in 2017, I was at "One Thing" in Kansas City. You and Reinhart were there, sharing about the mantle which Reinhardt held, being passed on to you; because of the deep level of humility through which you served the Lord. I reached out to our church for prayer and they started a prayer chain involving 7 churches in the area. He drove himself home on Friday afternoon. I was hospitalized and incubated for 12 days with double Pneumonia with fevers over 104. Three times they told my husband they were losing me. He had already reached out to the church. After 23 days in the hospital, I was released. The power of prayer works. May GOD bless

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. If cessationism is true that verse is wrong. If cessationism is true they are saying that Jesus healed yesterday but not today. We know that verse is very true. Rather when we don't see healing we need to ask, what are we doing to not receive God's best. Are we being a hindrance to the holy spirit?

But He never says that He will give His gifts to His Church only as an appetizer and then recall them when the Church continues to need them the most - as in our current deceptive age. The "perfect" that Paul is referring to, is so clearly shown the to be the Perfect that John is referring to in Revelation - the New Heaven and New Earth, when all of these gifts will no longer be needed because we will be in the majestic presence of the Lord Himself! We will no longer need healing, or gift of perception or prophetic word(s) or praying in tongues for edification. The bible never teaches that God gave the gifts of the Holy Spirit ONLY for the Apostles, but for the entire Church, His Bride, to equip her and strengthen her for the work of discipling. If a Church stopped desiring or using the gifts, that was OUR OWN choice, not God's choice. In other words, if you are afraid that God is not going to respond to your prayer in an open and obvious way that others can see, then you will more likely refuse to make ANY claims that He would answer your prayer because you don't want to look foolish, or have to "defend God." I hope you understand what I mean, my brother. But if you stand on God's Word that He has poured out His Spirit upon all flesh (i.e. all believers) then you have to also risk being laughed at by others who don't believe in a supernatural God doing supernatural things, for His own glory as well as for the benefit of others. All I'm asking is that you don't just lash out at me - using scripture to fight other scripture, but allow the Lord to be the Lord is His own Church. I love listening to Voddie Baucham and John Macarthur and many other Calvinists, but they and their followers seem to think that the Holy Spirit has given them ONE GIFT - that of judging/condemning others in the Body. We could all learn from Paul in Romans chapter 14, and be guided by love for the Body rather than loyalty to a denomination/theologian, etc.

I do believe in the gifts of the Holy spirit but honestly sometimes whenever i listen to the voices around me i do feel discouraged, confused and hurt but yes i have more peace and clarity in the scriptures to desire the spiritual gifts .God is still speaking ,God is still moving ,God is still using His people. We have modern miricals that occur. Native tribe members, that their language has gone extinct. In a restaurant, a lady spoke the blessing over the food in the tongues. After a Native from the lost tribe, he told her how beautiful of prayer she had spoken in his lost language, which had been extinct for years. This type of sign has been witnessed before in modern times.

I honestly think we need to stop calling ourselves part of the "Charismatic movement". There is a misconception that the word Charismatic means "in power" when the original translation of the word means Christ like. What we call charismatic church is the church Jesus called us to be. We are just the body of Christ. The word has gotten to be like a bad word for many who have been fooled by the devils lies. Talk about tickling their ears! Thanks again guys. This is a fantastic talk and we need to start doing damage control as the creationists are out for not just our blood but the blood of believers everywhere who might listen to them and be encouraged to deny the Holy Spirit or even mock others and even yes to blasphemy the Holy Spirt in some cases. It is antichrist and I have seen that spirit in some of those videos. Hostility and making fun of others is not the way of Christs love.

Growing up in the Christian Church, 'No crred but Christ, no book but the Bible', except for the gifts of the spirit. Jesus even said, "These signs shall follow the believer....." Pastors quickly squelched anyone who got out of line regarding cessationism. By the grace of God I founf the truth. Sadly, my brother-in-law died because my family continued to believe and speak death over him when i was speaking life. I received criticism from my family for speaking life.

Salvation is only the entry point and that is what most churches teach in the west. Speaking tongues is the first evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit and your gateway to prayer and ascension in the spirit. Not believing in tongues is like having a brand new ferrari but keeping in the garage and never driving it. Not many churches in the west teaches holiness, consecration, priesthood, judgment seat of Christ and this is how we came to a place where we are saying healing is not for today and people perish because of the lack of knowledge. But churches are going to invite male dancers trowing flames and entertain the crowds 🤷🏽

Brother Alan and Brother Daniel, thank you for this great discussion. A number of things stand out from this including the possible fact that we have been so caught up with winning souls but not put enough effort in discipleship. By our common definition, we have discipleship classes in many of our denominations, which seem to stop at just teaching our different doctrinal positions of our denominations, instead of helping believers become like Christ. Part of this could come form a sense that many feel that they have some monopoly on being leaders and are not keen to make those whom they present the Gospel to into 'Little Christs'. If our Lord himself declared that we would do even greater things than He did, and He was happy to see us do these things and sent us the promised Helper, why is it that we are quick to dismiss the possibility that others can be possibly more 'gifted' than we are? In these last days, we are compelled to preach the Gospel of the KINGDOM as a TESTIMONY to the nations as foretold in Matthew 24, and then the end will come. We are to be careful to not get caught up with endless arguments, for the HOLY SPIRIT is a PERSON, within whom lies the heart of God that longs to be with His children. We sometimes forget that and may get caught up with the gifts, which is where the cessationist movement gets its ammunition from to attack the charismatic movement. The Holy Spirit will only do the will of the Father and when we are immersed in Him, we get the attributes of the Father, which firstly and foremost is pure love, from which stem the gifts of a loving Father to a hurting world and then from that stems 'Thy Kingdom come Thy will be done on earth as it is done in heaven'. How then can we do the Father's will if we deny the power and presence of The Holy Spirit? In these last days, He will pour out His Spirit on 'all flesh'. How people react to that will determine whether they are wise virgins or the foolish ones. We are entering into that season and blessed are the hungry, for they shall be filled.

This was great!! What we need to do as Charismatics is defend the truth and give a defense for the hope that’s in us (and continuitionism is very hopeful) (to exegete scripture there I believe it’s talking about The Gospel) - but none the less, I believe we should, in love, defend our beliefs- also as Charismatics we should bone up on the basics of theology more, because I believe many are lacking in this area! The Trinity, Christ being fully man and fully God (Christology), salvation by grace through faith ALONE. And we should be stronger in Church History as well!

In the speaking in tongues at penticost, I believe they were actually speaking in heavenly languages. The crowd just had the holy spirit translating for them (as it says they heard). If you have a lot of people speaking different languages at once, even if you understood one of those languages, I would be supprised if you could make out much of what they were actually saying.
