Cessationism 7 (Miracle Workers) | Daniel Kolenda: Off The Record

In this episode of Off The Record, Daniel delves into the intriguing theological debate surrounding the frequency of miracles in the Bible. The spotlight is on Cessationism, a belief that asserts miracles, particularly the charismatic gifts of the Holy Spirit, are rare or have ceased altogether. Contrary to this perspective, Kolenda takes a closer look at the Bible, arguing that miracles are woven into its narrative fabric, appearing on almost every page.
He meticulously highlights passages from both the Old and New Testaments, illustrating the prevalence of divine interventions and supernatural occurrences. Exploring all the different stories of miraculous healings, supernatural transformations, and celestial interventions, Kolenda builds a compelling case that miracles are not confined to a particular era but are rather an integral part of the biblical narrative.

I did videos rebutting all of the Strange Fire speakers a few years ago. I actually felt that Tom Pennington did a poor job on cessationism. One of his points was that the gifts aren't being used properly today. That's not an argument for cessation. It's an argument for correction.

The Lord has led me to a Baptist church and truly opened my own eyes to the prejudice I had in my heart towards more cessationists type doctrine. Not to say all Baptist are cessationists, and in fact, most at my church are not, though many do hold on to a lot of cessationists' ideals. There have been frustrating moments and I have felt like a fish out of water there so often after growing up pentecostal and then belonging to a non-denominational church but talking on these platforms has made me realize I am far from the only one being called to cross the line we've drawn in the sand. God is definitely moving and uniting us. Piecing the parts together that both sides have gotten right and helping us to accept one another. It's exciting, and this has been an incredible series of encouragement. I can't wait to watch as more episodes are hopefully released soon! 😊

Do miracles confirm divinely appointed messengers? Sure! Because of the great commission ALL CHRISTIANS are divinely appointed messengers! The signs confirm the gospel being preached, not the preacher. They comfirm the message of the kingdom of God, but not the messenger. He has empowered all of us to go and preach the gospel with power to demostrate that the King has come!

I am 68 yo. When I attended school, debates were based on facts and not feelings. The only safe zone was around a teacher. Also, even in my younger years in school, our teachers would ask us a very simple questions: Why do you believe a certain comment or answer? Can you prove it? Except for a few areas like math or parts of science, which wasn't racist at that time, you had to be ready. You may have been wrong and the mistakes corrected by looking things up, but we had to think on our own. Our minister had a Q&A time for kids. Or if he was having dinner at my grandparents, he thoroughly enjoyed us asking questions about the Bible. He was never one of those who said "Because I am the minister and you can't question my authority ". If the spiritual gifts ended, aren't you saying that your faith has ended? It's like the apostasy of the pope and many churches adopting man's laws instead of teaching GOD'S word. I believe in the power of prayer. I believe in the spiritual gifts. Under Biden, anyone who is a Christian and a patriot are: Domestic extremists. A national security threat and enemy of the state. We are a bigger threat than nuclear war and their climate change cult religion where you love the creation but not GOD. It's time for Christians to come together instead of fighting among ourselves. Together we can push back against the apostasy and pushing the adoption of man's laws over GOD. May GOD bless

Cessationism is a tool of the devil to destroy the faith of the saints, to keep them from receiving God's grace and power in miracles. If you can only believe...all things are possible to him who believes (our beloved Lord Jesus in Marc 9:23). Simply put, cessationism is a theology of unbelief.

I’ve experienced 3 healing miracles in my body…eyes restored, hearing restored and bulimia destroyed. The last one I wasn’t even a follower of Christ when it happened but God heard my cry for help. I don’t think I have extraordinary faith. Jesus said we need faith as small as a mustard seed and anything is possible. I think you have to actively work hard to deny that miracles still happen today to not experience them. God is gracious and kind and wants to demonstrate His power to us.

Thank you for delving into this so thoroughly. I'm glad you mentioned John the immerser. He has been on my mind recently. I would love to hear your take on what Jesus was actually saying when He said John was the Elijah to come prophesied in Malachi. It seems like such a contrast. One a great worker of miracles, the other did no miracle. I've been contemplating (Matthew 11:11), "Amen, I tell you, among those born of women, none has arisen greater than John the immerser." Tree of Life version. The scope of these words blows my mind. Even Isaiah prophesied his ministry. This would put him above Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Samuel, David, Isaiah, Elijah, Elisha, and every other prophet. This, of course, excludes Jesus, because John said, "The One who comes after me is above me, because he existed before me." (John 1:15) I 'm thinking it has to do with his role in what actually happened on the day Jesus came to be baptized. We know that John is a Levitical priest because he is a descendent of Aaron. As Jesus approached, John declared, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world," In effect, he, the Levitical priest, was approving the Lamb of God as spotless and without blemish, completely innocent before God, thus approving the sin offering, and fulfilling the requirement of the law of Moses. "Then Jesus, came from the Galilee to John, to be immersed by him in the Jordon. But John tried to prevent Him, saying, 'i need to be immersed by You, and You are coming to me?' and Jesus responded, 'Let it happen now, for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.' So John yielded to Him." (Matthew 3:13-15) So the High Priest was approved and baptized by the servant priest. "After being immersed, Jesus rose up out of the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming upon Him. And behold, a voice from the heavens said, 'This is my Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased!' " (Matthew 3:16-17) So the Lamb is also approved by the Holy Spirit and the Father. Because if this incredible moment in history, we can all declare worthy is the Lamb! Halleluiah! I think this is why Jesus declared him to be the greatest man born of women. Just my take.

Why is it so difficult to state that cessationism is in essence demonically inspired; to make clear that Jesus made it clear to his disciples that the Holy Ghost would lead them in all truth John 14:17;26. On this basis it should be clear that the Spirit of truth is not in them. This should be made clear against their foolish arguments.

I believe Tom didn't read the whole Bible, or just can't understand it, maybe even blind to it, I pray his eyes are opened to the truth. What all that the other's did miraculously by God's power through them, Judges, King David and Solomon with the different inhuman like strengths and abilities of war and knowledge, not to mention the different mighty men who fought alongside them. There's a lot more miracles to the Bible than the cessationist belief wants to see. I just pray that God has mercy on them, that they are shown the truth and repent of unbelief, because that's truly what it is. I used to lean towards these teachings because of the men I trusted to be good biblical scholars and leaders, until God Himself convicted me by the Holy Spirit that something wasn't adding up as I read and studied the Bible for myself over the past 4 years and experienced miracles and been a part of praying for others to receive miracles as stated in my other comment. All glory to the Most High! 🙌 Also, though an extra biblical source, it is a historical one of the church, I guess that discredit the miraculous event of Polycarp? A man that was taught by the Apostle Paul Himself, when he died well after the scriptures were finished being written, it is recorded that as they tried to burn him alive, Polycarp prayed and wasn't burnt at all. The Roman emperor was infuriated by this so he had a soldier kill Polycarp with a dagger instead and a dove flow out of the fire, then so much blood spilled out from him that it miraculously extinguished the fire that was blazing hot. I guess testimonies like these are just fairytales to the cessationists. To God be all the glory! 🙌 I have to give this testimony here because I feel led to do so. By God's grace, my wife, whom I met in Kumasi Ghana moving here from Texas over 2 years ago to be an evangelist and help reach the unreached, and I were sent to heal someone through prayer and singing songs of praise over them. We shared with about putting their faith and trust in Jesus and blessed them with prayer before we left. These are nore of the details. We went to a woman's home where she lay dying, sent hone by doctors and told she had no hope of survival, she would die soon, I believe it was months. My wife got a call to our foundation we faithfully run that God has blessed us with, and it was the sick woman's mother crying to my wife about her daughter dying, she wanted us to visit her and pray with her. So, we obeyed the Lord in this request and did just that, as I said with prayers, songs, and telling the people around her about Jesus and how He died for our sins and rose again. It was God that sent us and worked through us in our obedience to Him, and the woman was completely healed, in the moment I was there I didn't see anything special or magical happen as cessationalists believe happens, but I will say this was special to me and a miracle already. The woman who was so sick she looked like skin and bones, other than her stomach being very large looking, she could barely sit up, but as we prayed, she gained strength and sat up more strongly and was happy praying and singing with us, though she thought she would die before we got there. We left trusting God that Je had already done a miracle for her. A few weeks after we left I asked my wife about the woman and how she was, she told me the woman was completely healed and they were grateful to God and for us being there and praying for them, all glory goes to Jesus! God does miracles to this day, just because someone says they disbelieve God working through His workers, doesn't mean it's true, no one can take away our own supernatural experiences just because they are lacking in faith from not seeing such things in their ministry. I'd say it's even safe to say their ministers are like that because of their lack of faith in what God can do through His obedient children, so I pray one day they all have a miraculous experience to help their unbelief be and strengthen their faith, as God did for me and my wife. Jesus even had an issue in Nazareth because of unbelief. ⁵⁸ “And He did not do many miracles there because of their unbelief.” -Matthew 13:58 That goes to show you how God intends it for believers working in obedience and miracles if Jesus who is God Himself couldn't do many miracles in a particular place from lack of belief. God bless you for these teachings, and protect you and yours as you continue strong in the faith, going around the world in obedience to our Lord and Savior! 🙏 I want to add another testimony to this, it's just one of many true stories that has happened to my wife before I met her, abd I've experienced personal isntant healings in my body from her praying over me many times, from serious illnesses, to simple ones. My wife, whom I've been married to for a little over a year now, by God's grace, had a dream of her brother going to some occult people wearing a certain type of red cloaks, to fo something that wasn't good, instead of getting what he thought he would get from this meeting, he was sacrificed by this group. My wife woke up in prayer and called her brother and told him the dream, in disbelief he asked her how she could know this information, he was literally about to go to such a meeting, and because she told him and it was perfectly accurate to what he was going to do, he never went which truly saved his life. All of these miracles come from God and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ works with us through the Holy Spirit when we trust Him, have faith, and obey. 🙌

And perhaps you have not read enough of Tom Pennington. And from what I have witnessed, the same has to be said for Daniel. Tom Pennington clearly states in the sermon I will attach below that he believes that God is and has been executing miracles since the conception of the universe, contrary to Daniel Kolenda's claims, deeming Daniel Kolenda's claim of Tom Pennington's (and cessationists, as Daniel Kolenda said) belief that there was, I paraphrase, only a combined timeframe of 200 years in which God performed miracles in the whole of history, fallacious. In addition, unfortunately, Daniel Kolenda also erroneously interprets Tom Pennington's words starting at 6:05. If Daniel is quoting those from where I think he is, Tom Pennington clearly clarifies misconceptions (one in particular) of the definition and belief (or the inverse) of Cessationism that neither you nor Daniel Kolenda seem to take heed of. Since it would not be ideal to quote Tom Pennington's words verbatim here now, I shall summarise. When Tom Pennington said those words quoted from 6:05, he explicitly said that the three time periods in history that he would proceed to mention was time periods in which the miracles performed were for a special and different purpose. So, I shall turn your words around, and onto yourselves. You and Daniel ignorantly slanders Tom Pennington. Did you two properly do your research on Tom Pennington thoroughly, just like how Tom did not read the whole Bible? And can you understand his claims, in totality, like you claim Tom Pennington is incapable of doing so with the Bible? Additionally. Have you or Daniel truly read the entire Bible, as Tom Pennington has allegedly not done? Worse, do you Continuationists really think you understand it all? If you do, lie, arrogance, and hypocrisy plague your tongues. The proposition that you are capable of understanding the "whole Bible"? Lastly, I would like to make it clear that this is not meant as a sinful attack, but a biblical critique. Sola Fide, Sola Gratia, Solus Christi's, Sola Scriptural, Soli Deo Gloria.

@John_Loh_JW to answer your question about reading the whole Bible, I've read it many times, and I have read it daily for more than 3 years now, though I don't have anything to prove to you or anyone else. Though you say it isn't an attack, you are attacking me, and it really doesn't seem Christian like to me. I made a statement about Tom and said I'm praying for him not being rude in any way, if you paid attention to what I wrote, it says I believehe didn't read the Bible, can't understand it, or is blond to it, that wasnt meant as an attack or insult, it was meant as genuine concern because I've learned from many cessationists and by God's grace recently came out of it. To me, it saddens me that you would jump to conclusions based on your beliefs that align with his; you take offense without understanding my heart behind this subject. Now, with that said, not me or anyone else knows everything there is to know about God's word, and I never made such a prideful or arrogant claim, you've only labled me this way without even knowing me. So, just like with Tom, I pray for you and your heart because I meant nothing negative or bad about what I said. That's all I'm going to say about this, so feel free to feel however you want about it and me, and to reply more if you want, but I didn't post my comment to argue with anyone, I posted out of genuine care and concern for cessationists, because I used to be one. Jesus is my Lord and Savior and I've not only seen and been a part of miracles, I myself have been miraculously healed by prayers and laying on of hands, all by God's grace and power in the name of Jesus. No one on this planet can change my mind on that, not even Satan.
