The Heresy of Cessationism 1 (The Scriptures) Daniel Kolenda: Off The Record

Cessationism is the belief that the "miraculous gifts" of the Spirit ceased with the end of the "Apostolic Age." In this Episode of OFF THE RECORD, Daniel Kolenda begins a series aimed at "The Heresy of Cessationism" prompted by the "Cessationist Conference" which was held the week prior.
In Part One of this series entitled "The Scriptures" Daniel begins the conversation by having a look at the common cessationist proof text. Then he contrasts the weak and meager Biblical support for cessationism to the abundant and compelling Scriptural evidence that the gifts continue.
Among the cessationist proof text Daniel adresses are:
- 1 Corinthians 12:7-11
- Ephesians 4:11
- Romans 12:6-8
- 1 Corinthians 13:8-13
- Hebrews 2:3-4
- Ephesians 2:20
- Jude 1:3
- 2 Corinthians 12:12
Among the texts Daniel addresses that refute cessationism are:
- 1 Corinthians 14:1-5
- Joel 2:28-29 (which was quoted in Acts 2:17-18)
- 1 Corinthians 12:7-11
- Mark 16:17-18
- 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21
- 1 Corinthians 14:39

Submitting to the Spirit, raising our hands in church, dancing before the Lord, healing the sick, casting out devils, speaking in unknown tongues, and operating in the word of knowledge requires us to put aside our pride. Cessationist choose only those gifts which leave opportunity for pride to remain and grow.

@Empty_Tomb_Podcast So what Paul wrote means nothing? He spoke to the believers about the gifts of the spirit. Paul was not in the upper room, neither when the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples. Paul was persecuting the Christians. And you are very judgemental. Jesus said to learn of Him, for He is meek and gentle.

Dear brother Daniel, Great teaching. I couldn't agree more. All you've said I can confirm by experience. I grew up in a church that taught heavily on cessationism. So I recognize all the arguments you've mentioned. It's true that these are the main points for the defense of cessationism. I was young and relied on what I was told. I didn't read the Bible myself at that time. All I knew were the preferred verses of the church. No need to say that there was little to no power in the church. Much sickness, depression and strive. But it was all normal to me, because every lack of power was reasened away effectively. At the age of 18, I came to the living faith in Jesus, my wonderful Savior and Lord. The indoctrination of the teachings however, wasn't quite over yet. I started to read the Bible myself, but initially with the lense of cessationism. The doctrines I was under I simply passed on. That lasted about 15 years. Then, in my early thirties, I got in touch with charismatics. I saw things I couldn't explain and decided to put of the cessationist glasses to search the Scriptures as if for the first time. What a wonderful yourney that was! The Bible became my authoritative guide. What I discovered is that there is literally NO argument for the doctrine that the gifts of the Spirit were temporal and have ceased. Everything points to continuation. So I had to decide whether to follow the doctrines I had been taught or the authority of the Bible. I chose the latter. Never regretted it. Coming from the camp of cessationism, I now speak in tongues, prophecy, lay hands on the sick, bind and cast out demons. While I'm still learning!, I see the power of God already working mightily. What a wonderful God we serve! The gifts are really to edify and build up the body of Christ. The powers of the kingdom of God are released by the Holy Spirit through His gifts. So, by simply reading the Scriptures I saw that I HAD to repent of the heresy of cessationism. It can't stand in the light of Scripture. Cessationism is nothing more than a disguise of lack of power by the lack of faith. I say this by my own experience, because that is exactly what I had to repent of. Jesus, through the Spirit, works with the preaching of the word, confirming it by signs and wonders, Mk 16:20. Nowhere in the Bible I found that He one day will stop doing this in the church. Instead He continues to do so. He is the same, yesterday, today and forever. Of course my wife and I had to leave the church we were attending. But that was only for our good 😄 Love and blessings from the Netherlands.

It was this utterly beautiful, life changing event of meeting Jesus through the Holy Spirit that drove me to scripture to understand what had just happened to me. I had never even read parts the Bible prior to being born again. That was almost 34 years ago. I'm so glad I found this video. I've been made to question my faith, even my sanity or the "deceitfulness" of my heart by cessationists over my simple testimony. I would like to ask though ... Can anyone actually be born again and deny the power of the Holy Spirit who lives as an inner witness? Isn't this how we KNOW Jesus? As opposed to knowing about Jesus?

Basic understanding of miracles in the New Testament was to validate the deity of Jesus, the fact that he did miracles and he gave power to his disciples for a period of time. Towards the end of each apostle miracles wasn’t a daily routine. And with the closing of the scripture it’s absolutely biblical to argue for the miracles of the New Testament over fabrication that we see today. Watch the cessationist documentary and gain understanding on the other side. Modern day “miracles” are not what we see in the scripture. They’re fabricated to appear, no human today has this gift that is credible to perform the miracles that we see in the Bible.

I fully agree with both your dissertation and presentation. As a rebuke and correction, it's actually long overdue; a tough love necessary towards this openly self-conceited and visibly arrogant Cessationist community! Brother Daniel, your interpretation is very faithful to the letter and the spirit of the Word of God. I encourage you to continue unrelentingly to fight for the faith once delivered to the saints!! Given, the Reformed theology has indeed contributed significantly in certain credible ways, for instance in terms of an emphasis on Christology, a reverence of the Scriptures, and generally a more conservative biblical interpretation of societal values, especially against those who have fallen into the errors of liberal theology. However, the so-called Reformed church incessantly and indignantly takes a narrow and parochial interpretation with regards to Pneumatology, which is quite irritably dishonest and outrightly unfaithful to their claim of "sola scriptura". The baffling irony is that the alleged mantra of "scripture alone" has effectively been used to preclude the Spirit, the very Author of the Scriptures, and also contradict the very text of the Scriptures themselves!

See cessationists (like myself)believe this absolutely happens today. The difference is we don’t say your friend has the “gift of healing”. God uses means to accomplish his will and he uses means like prayer to heal people. Cessationists don’t say God no longer heals. We say the “gift of healing” has ceased. It was even fading away in Paul’s time. It served a specific purpose (verifying the message of the apostles) and now that we have the complete Bible, verifying miracles/signs are no longer needed.

Straight to the point. Cessationism is heresy and those who preach it heretics. They denied the power of God. The Bible teaches us to “Have nothing to do with such people” 2nd Timothy 3:5. Also the word of God warns us that “In the last times there will be scoffers… who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.” Our God is God of faith and He acts in our lives according to our faith. Due to lack of faith of those who knew a lot about Jesus He did not perform miracles among them. Matthew 13:58. Right here is a witness of God’s miracles. My wife got healed from constant back pain while we were praying in tongues with our relatives and friends. We all felt such a strong presence of God almost like tangible. She just asked God “please heal me because I am tired from the pain” and she instantly felt her back start straightening up and she felt something was happening in her back. She instantly realized she got healed. It’s been a few years now and she never had any back pain anymore. God wants to be real in your life not just theoretically but actively real. Most of the time you cannon rationalize Gods work with your mind. You have to accept Gods word like a child and believe it without any prejudice and doubt. The moment you start doubting Gods word it becomes inactive for you. And if you want to rationalize what’s God doing you need to rationalize the birth of Jesus, all the miracles He performed, His resurrection and the rest of the Bible. Thank you Daniel for such a powerful argument.

Leaders like Kolenda want the glory for themselves and want the attention on them. Their motivation is the same as Satan, to dethrone God and exalt themselves. He claims to have personally led thousands to Christ. That is a “look at me” statement. God does the leading in every soul that is saved. No man or woman has ever led another to Christ. We share the Gospel, but when a person turns from their sin to cling to the beautiful atoning sacrifice of Christ it is the sovereign work of God. Man brings nothing but empty hands.

Thank You Daniel for sharing your views on this subject. I didn’t know you had initially responded to this Cessationist movement on You Tube in October 2023. I had to respond to Justin Peter’s video which was produced recently right after Jerry Savelle’s passing. I couldn’t believe that JP had the audacity to criticize Jerry Savelle and the “Faith Movement” so soon after Savelle’s passing. I would never be led by the Holy Spirit to do such a thing as what JP did publicly and slander any human being so soon after their death. Even if I totally believed that I was correct and justified in my own views, what he did crossed the line of human decency. There was no love in what he did and this shows his true colors. But it seems like he does not care about public opinion but would prefer as many clicks as he can get on the You Tube channel. So I believe that’s another motive for these Cessationists. It’s easy to criticize others but make money at the same time through this medium. The love of money is granted them by allowing them to slander others ministries and putting them down and yet they have nothing to offer on their own merit or teaching. Where is the compassion of the Lord in their comments? Again, I’m so grateful to have found your response and defense for Continuation as they call it and for explaining the gifts of the Spirit. The truth is many Christians do NOT want them. The weapons of our warfare are NOT carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds. That is what the gifts are for. They are weapons to fight our spiritual battles. I was in a church service a few years ago and the teacher said he never saw a move of God in 10 years. Well that church does not emphasize the gifts or do not believe they exist today. So where the Holy Spirit is not welcome, no movement of God will ever happen. That means people will not get saved or delivered. If you get sick, do not ask them to anoint you. So, this Sunday, all you have is 3 songs and a short sermon. you will leave church the same way you came in. If the Holy Spirit is not welcome in His fulness, then do not expect any move of God. Sad but true.

I was arguing with a guy online about the $300 charge and he tried to justify costs. To prove him wrong, he pulled up a prophecy conference with Joel Richardson and several other speakers in Orlando @ $129. Yeah, its mind numbing.

I went to a church who didn't believe in the gifts of the holy spirit. My growth stalled and I fell into a depressing plateau. It wasn't until 2020 that my eyes opened. The church was works based, disguised as Anti-Works based but they believe you needed Baptism to he saved. Although, God can make exceptions to save people like Luke 23. Why? God decided to remove the old covenant and give us the new one. So why wouldn't God do it again? Thats why its called Grace.

I am thankful for this teaching and would like to watch it all, however my heart was really grieved with how you opened this series. It honestly came across as mocking those who disagree with you. Keep the teaching, throw out the intro. You have such a large platform and it will teach many to speak of other brothers and sisters with that tone and language and I can't imagine the Lord is pleased with it. I would NOT be pleased if my kids spoke of one another that way and I'm just human, not a holy God!
