We got rained out for the SECOND YEAR running of the whole Enchilada.... but se la vie - life on the road demands that we stay flexible, and that's exactly what we did. After being woken up in the middle of the night by rain (I was sleeping in Seth's truck bed still), it continued to rain through the night and into the morning as well as a little bit of snowing up at Burro Pass (the top of enchilada).
No worries though as Captain Ahab was untouched by the bad weather and actually still sunny and only slightly chilly. Not only did I remember Ahab being fun, but Seth had missed this trail last year in Moab, so it worked out perfect!
Seth and I were joined for the ride today by a super cool Patron - Triple Steve! - who is out on an adventure of his own! We had coordinate over the last couple weeks meeting up at Outterbike, and I'm so stoked that we did!
Watching this footage back while editing it always impresses me just how beautiful and unique Moab riding is! There just isn't anywhere else in the world quite like it.
Ok, let's gear up and ride!
LFRHGS my friends, hope everyone is having a great start to the week!
-Alexander

I really love this trail! It's a great way to get a quick fix. It's only 8.3 miles and 1200 feet of climbing, but it always seems like more. Last year, at age 70, I did it in 1:48 and I did walk a few sections on the descent, so it doesn't take very long. I love the climb (and the sections of descending I can do - which is most, but not all). I have run just LPS down and then hit this after Milt's and that works well!

Love the videos. I was in Moab a week ago for my annual trip and enjoyed HyMasa- Upper Ahab-Amasa Back (too pooped to check out Rock Stacker), Porcupine Rim, Slickrock and Mars, a.k.a. Klondike Bluffs. I love climbing as much as going downhill and enjoy the challenges. Nowhere near as good a rider as the two of you though! Great camera work and great riding. Moab is my favorite place to ride and camp, hands down.

Haha...all of my buddies had the same feelings as Seth. They LOVED the last mile, but not stoked at all on the climb, and the constant up and downs leading to that last part. They were ready for a great 5 mile descent, which never happened. I think they were spoiled from Porc Rim two days prior. I was the opposite, and loved the entire trail, because it was engaging, great views, and even the climbs had some challenges to them. I just think it's hard to find anything to measure up to Whole Enchilada, and in particular, from UPS down on that last 17 miles. 17 miles of mostly descending with epic views, great trail....hard to beat! Agree with you though Alex...for a short loop with some incredible trail building and memorable spots...Ahab is great, and reallly close to downtown!

I too was waiting for the 5 mile descent. The constant up and down of the descent kind of killed it for me. To be fair, the last mile of downhill was awesome, but the climbing got really old really fast.

  • @LB2119

Totally agree, Porcupine is one of the few trails in the area where you aren’t doing quite a bit of climbing in the descent. I have not ridden portal but it seems like a more sustained descent as well. It was great to see Alexander attack the climbs and not dab! As someone who, like you, enjoys the sustained descents, Moab provided a welcome challenge for the rough and rugged short climbs that are vastly different from the NorCal trails I ride. Pipe dream was another one that surprised me for the difficult climbs mixed in with great descending. Thanks for sharing, keep shredding!

Dartht33bagger same here. There were definitely some fun parts, and I really enjoyed a lot of the views, but all in all I was glad to get back to the car at the end of the ride. The constant up and down just wore me out.

Alex, you guys ride so many awesome places, it's really cool when I see you ride trails that I've ridden. I did Ahab this past May on my first trip to Moab. It was awesome to have done it, because it was touted as one of the "must ride" trails, but I had the same thoughts on it as Seth. While I like a good technical climb, there were LOTS of them! It got to the point that I started to dread the DH sections, as I knew they just meant more climbing, haha. Pretty big fear factor out there too, at least for me. Even watching this video brought back some of the pucker factor I experienced out there, haha. Totally worth it though, you just can't beat the views out there. The terrific riding combined with the stunning natural beauty make Moab such an amazing place. All in all though, I'm glad I did Ahab. Coming from New England, it's such a different type of riding out there, it really upped my technique and confidence level. The entire Moab trip was like that, actually. The 3 other guys I travelled with are all excellent riders, hitting these trails with them was like badass boot camp. I came back a much better rider. Keep up the great work!

Ahab was my first Moab ride and I thought it was sick but extremely physical. Although watching Nate Hills bomb it definitely exemplifies the fact that it is a trail that rewards being smooth and carrying speed. Otherwise you find yourself doing a lot of punchy climbs on your "downhill." I think I enjoyed riding porcupine rim more though just on the smashing rocks and hucking drops at 20 mph factor.
