Is Cape Town the most racist city in the world? I Hyren Peterson | Abrasive Conversations Clips

Hyren worked and lived in different countries and in different cities in South Africa. After a decade, he is back in Cape Town. So in true Abrasive Conversation fashion, I asked him if Cape Town is one of the most racist places on the planet.

Landlords setting the bar high for rental applications is understandable considering how the law is almost entirely skewed in favour of the tenant. How is that racist? Job title has also got fokol to do with the content of the applicants character or their track record. If I view the world through racist lenses, I'm going to see racists around every corner. Let's start looking for the good in our brothers and sisters, what we have in common and not our differences. Let's build and not divide.

Here in Norway, by law - you can't demand more than 3 months rent as a security deposit. Also monthly rents have to be openly published and a landlord can be heavily fined for trying to change the rent based on ones-race.

@@MuantanamoMobile Here the norm is one to two months rent for security deposit, as a landlord myself, I have a vigorous and intensive process of qualifying a tenant for the simple reason that the law is very much in the tenant and if he/she is in contractual breach eg. non-payment , then the landlord has to employ an attorney to get the court order , this very rarely takes less than several months .So nothing to do with colour, rather "Does the tenant have a clean credit history and a stable verifiable income?" I'm sure it is similar in Norway ? Interesting that the creator of the video seems to think that qualifying a tenant is racist when I know several landlords of 'colour' that have an intensive tenant qualification process.

Cape Town has an overall discriminatory culture. Blacks vs Coloureds, Blacks Vs Whites, Whites vs Coloures, even ethnically Xhosas vs Other tribes. Discrimination is so ubiquitous in Cape Town that it's very hard to live there if you have high levels of self-respect as a Black person. However, if you live there long enough, you tend to adjust to the subtleties and just accept them as part of life. That's why people who've only lived in Cape Town tend to be extremely defensive about these issues.

I read most of the comments, especially those shouting "racist" but you actually know the meaning of the word? Secondly, I have a flat in which I looked after my mom, now rent it out. The previous 3 renters damaged and abused the place so closed it and stop renting it out. Had to replace cupboards, shower, carpets, clean-up the mess they left behind like dirty floors, doors, marks on the walls, ect, ect. Unfortunately there is the squatters law and once in, the owner can't just ask the renter to leave, he has to go to court to get a court order to "boot" the renter out! Who covers those costs? If you rent a property from large company or housing scheme, it's all the same, admin & paper work! Why should it be any different when the owner is totally vunerable, renters don't care! It's not their property nor their concern, not their loss and that arrogant attitude has caused owners to be more cautious, protective, concerned - you are a stranger! So prove your track record of reliability, honesty - just like credit facilities or cards - prove you are an upstanding citizen

The problem is a growing population combined with a stagnated economy due to bad policy, mismanagement and corruption over the past 30 years. People of color are already excluded systematically in certain neighborhoods, schools even sports because of things they will ask you. For example Schools, doors are open to everyone but if you don't have too much money, forget it. Same for places to rent and sports, you must have money, who's got money? So they don't want to tell you straight that you are not welcome, because they smile at you, treat you special, but they know you won't afford and you not gonna come back. Sad and facts.

Is cape town racist or discriminatory? Thanx to non-payers who have destroyed trust by people who rent properties. Renters, have no respect for property which is not theirs, damage and abuse the rented place expecting the owner must fork out! Those forms he had to fill in is to protect the owner - ever heard of the squatters act? This is a biased video and rental owners were not given a chance to raise their issues! It's always about victimhood!
