Thank you this was great. I appreciate you taking the time to explain in depth your experience and the tips along the way! Man, not only have I found sculpting to be very enjoyable but also the majority of the sculpting community is quick to help a beginner like myself. With that said thank you and I’m still catching up on all your videos 🤘🏼

i have the grey eds head, its hollow plastic and feels really sturdy also can be filled with warm water to help with demoulding. i am finding it nice to work with so far, will be making a mould from it for the first time in a week or two. i bought mine because i felt compared to cost/ time of making an armature any other way for a full head mask and not having someone around who i trusted to help make a head cast of myself it was a good deal . it also feels like it will last a while, not sure i would have bought the foam/white version tho .

my 1st attempt at demolding with the edhead was a fail bc i boiled water resulting in the plaster cracking. Im about to try again with warm water, hopefully it works bc its not coming off@@Cullens_Workshop

I have the new ed head and the old ones. They're both nice for different reasons. I used to really like that the old version was easy to modify (i.e. cut the head and make the neck longer, fill it with plaster, carve out the eye sockets, etc...) and the new version is cool because of filling it with warm water to help with oil clay demoulding. However cuttting into that version would make the feature non existant. That all being said I do use cheap alternatives as well: those plastic heads from amazon, the cheapo styrofoam heads from the craft store, super simple handmade armatures. What really seems most important is the planning involved before u really finalize ur sculpt and thinking ab issues like shrinkage (with latex) or if ur planning on a silicone mold thats a whole other set of considerations. One thing is for sure, no matter what armature I use I always check measurements with calipers making sure to allow for extra room if its going to be a wearable final piece.

Oh yeah fit is the most important thing. That's why i wound up making my own version.

Also it depends on the intention of the sculpture...i do resin..silicone and latex...so in making a LATEX mask it neds to have about 1/2 to 3/4 inch MORE clay on it to acomodate for latex shrinkage...the Ed head is pretty much worth it for that particular reason...but like you stated...anything else pretty much works for anything else.

Hi, I was wondering what resin you used to coat your ed head to give it the hard protective coating? Thanks!

The first time I used a fiberglass resin. But that wound up flaking off on parts that didn’t get sanded enough. I redid it before casting in smooth cast 300. You could also do it in something like xtc-3d

I'd really like to get a lifecast of my full head and shoulders, to sculpt on, and fit wigs for myself on, but the one place i contacted (in Chicago), wanted over $600 which is too much for my wallet right now...and i don't know anybody i trust to do one as an amateur...i've actually wondered if it would be lucrative to start a business doing lifecasting? apparently so lol

Yeah a full bust can be pricey, that's why I did the face casting at the local reynolds store. Covid really messed up their in person classes. You may talk to the people at the local reynolds store and see if they know anyone who could do it?

So would a mannequin upper body (head, arms and torso with no face) be good for sculpting busts?

Yep, it would definitely free up a lot of clay. The only down side would be if you want to adjust the head position.

@@Cullens_Workshop Well, Google has done it again. I had no idea there was a response to that comment until I just happened to come back and watch this video again. Thank you very much for the information!!
