I kinda disagree. Budgeting is putting round pegs in round holes, and square pegs in square holes. What requires discipline is *deciding to sit down* and put the round pegs in round holes, and square pegs in square holes, and *stopping* when all the round holes are filled with round pegs and the square holes are filled with square pegs.

This is why I set myself up with a need want list...... My basic rule is I can't get something on my want list until all my needs have been met..... Needs include food, transportation and maintenance and clothing when necessary...... There are a few other things as well, but that's how I operate..... If my needs aren't met, I can't get what I want...... I don't deny myself, but I get smart with my money to make sure I'm not going to be struggling...... Most of my friends don't understand this though..... Their thought process is I need this shiny new thing and I need it now, but then they're going without some of their basic needs
I’ve been budgeting for months and it has totally saved me financially. A lot of people budget monthly, but since I get paid weekly I always budget on a weekly basis, which is awesome because I can track my expenses and spending more often. I personally love budgeting with pen and paper. I’m not a big fan of apps honestly. I just love writing things down and making notes to myself.

I have an alternative plan for people who think following a budget is "too restrictive". I call it a guilt based budget. Live like you normally would for a month, but whenever you spend money on something you write down the amount and what it was for. Then at the end of the month you go through the list of what you spent and categorize it, and if you went over your income for that month you have to explain to yourself why each purchase was necessary and worth going into debt for. Works even better if you do it with a spouse/partner and explain to them.
Did a budget for the first time this month. I was off on groceries and haircuts. Next month, I made the adjustment
I think understanding that you will be bad at it at first but that you will improve is important to understand and accept. Too often people do bad once and give up.

I love budgeting :) My husband and I have a big budget committee meeting at the beginning of the month and then have a quick meeting (usually 5 minutes or so) every Sunday after that just to touch base. Then of course, I run numbers a few times per week because I’m obsessed 😂

Marlyn Santos After 10+ years of consistent budgeting, I can tell you to within $50 what I actually spend on food in a month. I sometimes go a few dollars over, sometimes a few under (a few = >$20), but roughly I hang out around $700 a month. But if I were able to increase that to $800, I’d spend $800. So basically I spend what I budget. I could probably save $100 if I shopped a bit more frugally, but why? We can afford $700 a month for 5. I should mention I get most of my produce at a produce store that has really good prices! I menu plan every week and shop to the menu. All this makes a difference.
Budgeting might not be complicated, but for some people getting control of their money IS that hard! For everybody that saw the light in January, stick with it! Feels great on the other side.

Budgeting is SIMPLE! having the discipline to stick to a budget is the hard part. Some people aren't willing to sacrifice. They feel entitled to a new car, a $1k phone, a 4000 square foot house, etc. Ya can't fix stupid.
I started budgeting with my wife a few months ago and I liked the results (thank you free spreadsheet program). But we were still using the debit card for all purchases and felt like the money was still not being properly accounted for. Now we use cash and envelopes instead and it works a lot better. And for the first time in over a decade I am able to put money aside in savings. Too bad Dave isn't running for president, because maybe then the congressional budget would be balanced and America would be debt free in 6 months.
Go out of bounds and you hear Dave say “That was STUPID!!”

This man has been a blessing to my finances. God bless you Dave!
I struggled to do a budget where every penny was set out as I felt it was too restrictive, instead, I tracked my spending for 3 months then gave myself a weekly budget the I knew was livable. With this system I can save 60% of my income but still feel can do what I enjoy, if I spend too much one week I just know I have to cut back the next.

Your app is amazing, i preach and recommend it to friends all the time. I used to keep a rinky dink excel spreadsheet and still saved, but your app is much more helpful, especially with preplanning, category breakdowns, and creating funds.
I need to rework my budget also. But this time, I am also going to print out a monthly calendar so I know what I am spending on each day. And if something comes up and its not on the calendar for that day, its an easy "no".

I've paid for groceries with credit cards for 20 years now and it's not that hard to keep track. Last month we spent $591.17 on groceries. Plus with my card I get 2% cash back on groceries and 3% cash back on gasoline. every two years I get a free month of gas and groceries from my points

Can't argue with that Ryan! I guess Dave would say that you're still "playing with snakes". The temptations with credit cards (to purchase stuff and not pay the balance in time) are for many people just not worth the points or convenience, is what I think he means.
@drunclecookie216

@@flowergrowersmith449 yeah, my mind works completely different from most people. Being a civil engineer my mind has a very mathematical approach to everything. Whenever I have cash in hand I consider that money already out of the bank and it's not going back in, so I will blow it much faster. When I use a credit card I consider that purchase as building up a monthly bill that I have to pay so I'm less likely to spend because that money isn't "gone" yet, but I have to pay for it. The numbers on a computer screen for my bank account have a bigger impact on me then a piece of green paper in my hand.
Budgeting can be hard but I help other teachers on small incomes live a fulfilling life.

Question on my state 529 plans. I have 2 529 plans for my 2 kids. My oldest child's 529 plan has been active for 4 years and I see it has an annual return of 3.9%. My younger child's 529 plan has been active for 3 years and has an annual return of 2.07%. Should I make changes? Or are these plans still young enough to just let it ride? I'm split evenly between funds allocated towards aggressive, moderate, and conservative portfolios.
It’s good to know that the budget is not supposed to be set on stone 🥴 that’s why I never did a budget before -it never worked out as written . Ive been budgeting for 1 1/2 months and I have to readjust my budget daily but I’m letting myself reap the consequences of not sticking to my budget instead of getting a lifeline from the credit card. The thing I’m doing wrong is not having a detailed documentation of where I ultimately spend each dollar after shifting the budget around. I will start doing that going forward to arrive at a better prediction of how much money to allocate to each category in the future= less reworking of the budget
I have been keeping a budget for over 10+ years and it’s the BEST thing ever. I don’t do the Dave Ramsey way by assigning every dollar to a place. Can someone answer a question for me that I've been running into on our budget? If you have job expenses that you get reimbursed for, how do you factor that into the budget? For instance, if my husband spends $30 on gas but gets reimbursed 4 days later, how do we record that? Do we simply take it out of the regular gas budget as an expense, and then add it back to the budget as money earned? This is confusing to me.

I think the one part that I got super lucky with was that my food/eating budget was enough. It took some time to go through my transactions to figure it out, but I think that's why it was more accurate. I haven't had to adjust it since I made it. I assign $860 a month to groceries, eating out, taking a cab/uber/lyft, buying little expenditures, and buying clothes. That's a little less than 20% of my take home pay. What's been great about this budget is that I don't feel restricted at all, and often times I spend less than the full amount ($430 per 2 week pay period) and end up putting whatever remains into savings. This has allowed me to feel like I'm not held down by my budget, but to also add more to savings/paying debt and to gamify each week to try to squeeze a bit more out of my bi-weekly budget to put into my high score savings account.
You were spot on on the food bill.
Great content...
I started drinking water only, I'm quiting fast food, soda, chips, too much chocolate. I'm done. I finally faced the music, (my monthly spending habits), and it shocked me to my core. Goalwise, I only feel the need to purchase a vehicle and a house. After that, I hope to continue to live the way I really want to.
