Is BOATING ON A BUDGET possible? Let's look at the costs of LIVING ABOARD a narrowboat...

One of the most common questions we get asked is... How much does it cost to live on a narrowboat? There is no fixed answer to that question due to SO MANY variables. But in this video we look at what OUR outgoings are - so hopefully you can relate to that and decide if you can afford to go 'Boating On A Budget' as well.

It was very refreshing to hear someone say that the license fee was good value for what you get, not too sure that you are a “tight Yorkshireman”🤔 Don’t forget that most marina mooring fees about 9% goes to the CRT

I had a static caravan a few years ago - and paid for the ground rent to keep that in one spot than I do to use the entire inland waterways… to me - even as a tight Yorkshireman - it’s good value! 😂 And yes that’s in effect why crt are adding the surcharge to CCrs licence - to make up for that 9 percent they miss from them.

Love the insight into boating and the costing.just a little story we hired a narrow boat with my brother and his wife ,he was steering at the back he shouted for me to give him a push off from the bank forgot got to jump aboard ,so while the boat moved away got my hands on rail and feet on the bank so fell in the water, the ladies tried to drag me out but couldn't do so my brother raced from the stern and said save Jack or save boat luckily he saved me lol

Thanks Peter and Dawn on the detailed costs for Livaboards. I heard within the past year that the government is no longer contributing to the CRT so, I think the CRT has been trying to raise the boater's costs as fairly as possible to make up for shortfall but, this is always a bitter pill for the boater's to swallow, no matter how you slice it. Alas, there is "No free lunch". One of the biggest gripes I have heard about continuous cruising is related where you must be at a physical location on a regular basis, such as a job, church, and rendezvous with friends. I am glad to hear your "Tight Yorkshireman" techniques have enabled you two to live a fulfilling and comfortable life style. 😊 Thanks for the videos, I always enjoy them!

@@billharris6886 it’s probably not an error on your part as such as it’s been widely reported about the government withdrawing funds… it’s just most of the reporting doesn’t actually give the full, correct, details. But safe to say the government WILL eventually withdraw all funding (just not done it yet…).

Useful information indeed. I think for many people it is a case of wanting to compare life costs aboard with life costs in a house. I suspect that transport costs will actually be higher when living in a house because most people end up using a car all the time since the house is not walking distance to anything.

Our 42ft in a marina costs about £350 per month for mooring license and insurance. Which isn't cheap but as a second sort of home it's not that bad either. In 2 years tidying it up and a few upgrades we've probably spent about £5000 on it and it's wasn't even a project boat. It can be cheap but it can be expensive depending on what you want.

@@WingingItBoatingonaBudget based on when you passed, you'll be at the end of there by now. I haven't moored up there, but there are a fair number of moored boats at the end / near the Dolphin Supper bar, so I am sure it is safe / ok there. I would probably come back down the Runcorn arm and head toward Warrington as it is more in the country-side assuming that is where you are heading. I guess you'll be heading up to either Manchester OR Worsely). I would stop off in Lymm for GREAT fish and chips. Have a safe journey. Have you done a recap on what you would do differently if you did another electric conversion? I have a 1980's 36 ft with the hull in good nick, that has an oil leak on the bottom of the sump and I have always wanted to convert it as a kind of extended day trip boat / office.
