If the frames are empty, you can just leave them for the bees to fill when they're ready. You don't have to do anything until then.

You talked about splits in this video...so it seemed like a good chance to respond. Is it actually ideal and the best thing to split when you have 2 full deeps, or sooner? I wanted to ask someone this because, when you watch beekeeper videos they do it that way because its easier on the beekeeper to just move one box to the side and then you have 2 boxes (2 colonies after you slap on a lid and bottom etc). But bees weren't invented after boxes, and they aren't found in nature with boxes. And the boxes were made more to capture honey than for ideal split size... (I'm not saying they are bad. But I'm trying to figure out the how to be efficient and successful on splits.) So this made me wonder and think, maybe its possible that to survival /prosperity success, the ideal time to split might not be when you have 2 boxes... so its time to gather data and ask people like you this. Thank you for the videos. I was also curious if you get longer nectar flow with mountains and hills than on low lands apiary sites? (because water flows down hill, its possible that maybe flowers might be around for different time periods than in low lands? I don't know this is a thought. Unless on a dry side of a mountain.)

I split hives when they look like they're preparing to swarm. I don't split sooner than this unless I have a request for nuc's and for some reason don't have any left for sale. I prefer to work with the bees and their natural tendencies. Splitting 2 deep boxes is a way to split a hive, but not the ideal way to go. I think there's a lot more to consider when splitting. The hive without the queen should have most of the eggs and larvae and lots of pollen. They won't have a laying queen for over a month and need these resources to keep going until the queen starts laying. The hive with the queen can be considerably smaller. For this smaller hive, I wouldn't give them too much honey b/c here hive beetle will destroy it very fast. when do bees want to swarm? That's when both deep hive bodies are full and there's nowhere for the bees to build new comb. you will also see a lot of pollen (usually) in the brood frames. The bees are essentially getting the queen to stop laying so much so she can slim down and fly off with them. They also start to get cranky and there's lots of flowers blooming. I have an apiary in an area on the beach and they have a huge flow in the spring to summer but they bring in almost nothing the rest of the year. Most beekeepers put their hives here for those months and then move them. It can be tricky keeping them alive year round there. In the mountains, it is very lush and rainy and the bees have almost a constant food source - Feb-Oct. In the mountains and especially the wet side of the mountain is also where most of the farms are - avocado, mac nut, citrus, coffee, so there's going to be lots of food for the bees. The lower elevation area is where the tourists are and the resorts and the highway and stores.

@@BeekeepingMadeSimple Oh! Yes. Your simple answer is the right one. It makes sense. The bees will know when to swarm themselves, I hadn't really thought about. I was overthinking it. Thanks.

Interesting! Why is that? Personally, having at least 5 hives makes beekeeping a lot less stressful and way easier but I know beginners don't want to hear that they should have that many LOL

Okay, how hard can beekeeping be? The bees do everything. All the beekeeper has to do is buy a hive, harvest lots of honey, and make a lot of money. This is why honey rhymes with money. Okay, I am kidding. It does have complications and nuances.

That was the first 30 seconds of the video, but the video is 16 minutes where I do go into detail about what I find hard about beekeeping, what is challenging about beekeeping (which is very important because I believe what makes beekeeping interesting and challenging is different than what I think makes beekeeping hard), and ways the beekeeper can make it easier for themself.

@@rajbeekie7124 LOL I thin we're totally misunderstanding each other. I took your comment as making fun of how I started the video and you were being sarcastic. I do explain ways beekeeping is hard in the video and wanted to make sure you knew that. It's definitely not easy, but the nuances is what makes it interesting for me. Even after doing it year round here in Hawaii, 10 years later I still am learning and that keeps me going.
