Is Bazball the Future of Test Cricket? A Closer Look

Спорт

In this video, we discuss some of the strategies that have made the England cricket team must watch TV over the past few months. For me, I don't think they'll win against in India and Australia, especially at their homes. But I really don't care, because Brendon McCullum took an absolutely fragmented team and decided to double-down on their strength of white-ball hitting ability and go on a Blitz. He's definitely made England a better team as well as pushing the boundaries on how far he could go with this approach. He'll fail a lot for sure, but if the fans are willing to persist, Baz can adapt their gameplay according to different conditions and game scenarios to become a potentially world beating team. Experimenting, learning, and improving - This is what test cricket should be all about. Fans - have patience please, because you might just be witnessing something you may never see again ❤

    Will be interesting to see if Bazball works in English conditions with as flat pitches as you can make in England. Most home series are won by the home team now, so will be even more interesting when England play away what type of pitches the home side will ask for. If Bazball works will Australia, India and the rest of the test sides adopt their versions of bazball, would make for exciting test matches.

    It's all good for us Bangladesh 😂 who will play significantly more test matches compare to previous decade. England will be all out inside 100 runs with that approach in Mirpur which won't be boring to watch (although our pace bowlers are also showing huge potential to be one of the top 3/4 best attack in the world but spin is still the best option unless we are playing against Afghanistan).

    Great video but I think you're missing the point that Bazball isn't just smacking the ball but more capitalising on what your team is good at. Other teams can do Bazball but it means doing what they're good at which may not be limited overs cricket. For instance South Africa use for the most part a number 7 that isn't to reliable with the bat and is more so just a bowler and that is what Bazball is, South Africa realised bowling was there strength so they are using 5 instead of 4 or 4 and an allrounder. The last thing I'll say is that Pakistan pitches were perfect England Bazball pitches on account of the flat pitches but only time will tell.

    Bazball is more than just whacking it around at 4 an over. That Australian side had at least 8 all time greats in it any time. This England side has a couple of great/very good players. The difference is in the mentality. There is no fear of failure because it’s not just about winning but also entertaining. I keep thinking back to the game in New Zealand where stokes enforced the follow on - there’s no way Waugh would have enforced the follow on in that match (especially after Eden Gardens 2001) he would have wanted to grind New Zealand into the ground. The Australian side of 1999 - 2008 was all about strict discipline and relentlessness. They were innovative as a consequence of their skill and experience, whilst This England side is fairly raw and as a result promotes expression and innovation as a method to compete and entertain.

    Its all well and good doing this against a weak New Zealand side and 2nd string Pakistan side not at full strength on those flat roads in Pakistan. It'll be a whole different story against the Australian quicks. They got bundled out at Lords by South Africa remember, if South Africa had a batting line up these days they would have won that series. Let see how they go in the ashes, Australia will be very confident after their dominance in the last 2 years in test cricket

    @@6ixandout No worries this was the rest of my comment I forgot to post earlier: And since when have England been the best limited overs team for the last decade?? Back in 2013 they were one of the worst teams in the world, even Alastair Cook was somehow getting into that side, and they got knocked out by Bangladesh in the 2015 World Cup. Australia dominated odi cricket from 1999-2015 and are currently number 1 in odi cricket again after a few years underperforming since they won the 2015 WC. Also remember what the Bazball mindset brought to the 2015 WC final - brainless cricket from McCullum in the first over of the match leading Mitchell Starc to set Australia on their way to an easy victory

    I think I said that they were ONE of the best limited overs teams over the past decade (and if I didn't, that's what I meant :P) I stand by that statement. Champions Trophy runners up in 2013, winner of the ODI WC in 2019, T20 WC in 2022, T20 semi finalists in 2021 and T20 runners up in 2016, that's pretty impressive! I'm not an England fan but I will give them credit where credit is due. This video is to give one side of the analysis and part two gives the other, then you can decide for yourself what you think. Thanks again!

    @@6ixandout yeah I think saying last decade is pushing it that's all. They've only been good since they hit rock bottom in 2015 and realised they had to turn things around and take white ball cricket more seriously. Overall they had been very average from the 1992 World Cup final, to when they started winning in 2015. 2013 champions trophy was played in typical home conditions where they've occasionally done well like the 2004 champions trophy for example. But even then they managed to screw up in the final in a game they were winning easily. They've been there or thereabouts in tournaments since 2015 but you could equally say that about India, Pakistan, Australia and even Wi in t20 WCs

    2 - 0 down and Australia only need to win or draw 1 of the remaining tests to retain the Ashes. Bazball might be entertaining for those with an attention span measured in nanoseconds, but its not going to win you games against teams like India or Australia who can change their approach according to the situation on the field at the time.

  • @CarlinConnolly
    @CarlinConnolly9 ай бұрын

    INdia will be a more difficult test than Australia @ home but the style of play definitely worked against them. But if you think about it, BazBall is actually designed for the subcontinent - go hard @ the new ball when the ball will fly to the boundary and fields are up, take on spinners - particularly coming down the pitch to take the spin out of the equation. Attacking fields and rotation of the seamers so shirt spells allow full pace and don't allow batters to get a handle on them. Much depends on the back up spinners as i think Leach will give Stokes control and some wickets but if Root and then whoever joins him - Livingstone, Ahmed, Jacks, Dawson & Parkinson are the candidates i'd say - takes wickets with attacking fields then we can win because we like to chase - now if that's possible on a raging turner we'll see!

    Good analysis, however, Bazball can't be beaten for one simple reason, which is that not worrying about losing is what Bazball is about. As long as the English fans don't mind losing occasionally or even a couple of games at a time, the theory dictates that given enough basic talent Bazball will win more than it loses. We could argue that Bazball is the inevitable consequence of 20/20 cricket as especially younger players need to be more aggressive to become effective 20/20 players which let us face it is where the big bucks are. Players especially batsmen trying and often failing to transfer from one format to the other is deemed to cause more trouble than it is worth, and this seems to be the case. Bazball also and perhaps counterintuitively often results in fairly long games as although wickets may fall many runs may be scored before this happens. Bazball is a win-win situation for the fans and Test Match Cricket as a whole and as such will become the way of the future to a lesser or greater extent.

Now the poms come along and think they’ve reinvent the wheel, but they just copied Australia. It may work against Ireland, but not a top class side. It’s all well and good to bash everything, but in test cricket you need to play to the conditions and circumstances of the game. That’s why it’s called a test. And you’re not always going to get flat pitches prepared by your per curators. Ask Anderson how he likes that. It’s probably finished his career ( about time actually) How’s that working out for you now England? 2-nil😂

    what is bazball? lol Nothing new about playing positively & aggressively as long as you have the players who can actually do it. Propaganda.

    If you are amazed with Bazball style cricket then you have never seen Sehwag play test cricket 🙄

    He is amazed because it is the entire team playing like that, not just a single player. That's what is amazing about Bazball. About half of the team is having a strike rate close to or above hundred with runs on the board. Sehwag is also not the only player who was fsst in test cricket btw. For example, the Brendon "Bazball" McCullum has hit the fastest test hundred and not Sehwag. I'm an Indian or Indian origin too. Try seeing the world without a nationalistic bias sometimes.
