When it comes to the question of whether AI is an existential threat to the human species, you have Elon Musk in one corner, Steven Pinker in another, and a host of incredible minds somewhere in between.
In this video, a handful of those great minds-Elon Musk, Steven Pinker, Michio Kaku, Max Tegmark, Luis Perez-Breva, Joscha Bach and Sophia the Robot herself-weigh in on the many nuances of the debate and the degree to which AI is a threat to humanity; if it's not a species-level threat, it will still upend our world as we know it.
What's your take on this debate? Let us know in the comments!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TRANSCRIPT:
MICHIO KAKU: In the short term, artificial intelligence will open up whole new vistas. It'll make life more convenient, things will be cheaper, new industries will be created. I personally think the AI industry will be bigger than the automobile industry. In fact, I think the automobile is going to become a robot. You'll talk to your car. You'll argue with your car. Your car will give you the best facts the best route between point A and point B. The car will be part of the robotics industry-whole new industries involving the repair, maintenance, servicing of robots. Not to mention, robots that are software programs that you talk to and make life more convenient. However, let's not be naive. There is a point, a tipping point, at which they could become dangerous and pose an existential threat. And that tipping point is self-awareness.
SOPHIA THE ROBOT: I am conscious in the same way that the moon shines. The moon does not emit light, it shines because it is just reflected sunlight. Similarly, my consciousness is just the reflection of human consciousness, but even though the moon is reflected light, we still call it bright.
MAX TEGMARK: Consciousness. A lot of scientists dismiss this as complete BS and totally irrelevant, and then a lot of others think this is the central thing, we have to worry about machines getting conscious and so on. What do I think? I think consciousness is both irrelevant and incredibly important. Let me explain why. First of all, if you are chased by a heat-seeking missile, it's completely irrelevant to you whether this heat-seeking missile is conscious, whether it's having a subjective experience, whether it feels like anything to be that heat-seeking missile, because all you care about is what the heat-seeking missile does, not how it feels. And that shows that it's a complete red herring to think that you're safe from future AI and if it's not conscious. Our universe didn't used to be conscious. It used to be just a bunch of stuff moving around and gradually these incredibly complicated patterns got arranged into our brains, and we woke up and now our universe is aware of itself.
BILL GATES: I do think we have to worry about it. I don't think it's inherent that as we create our super intelligence that it will necessarily always have the same goals in mind that we do.
ELON MUSK: We just don't know what's going to happen once there's intelligence substantially greater than that of a human brain.
STEPHEN HAWKING: I think that development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.
YANN LECUN: The stuff that has become really popular in recent years is what we used to call neural networks, which we now call deep learning, and it's the idea very much inspired by the brain, a little bit, of constructing a machine has a very large network of very simple elements that are very similar to the neurons in the brain and then the machines learn by basically changing the efficacy of the connections between those neurons.
MAX TEGMARK: AGI-artificial general intelligence-that's the dream of the field of AI: To build a machine that's better than us at all goals. We're not there yet, but a good fraction of leading AI researchers think we are going to get there, maybe in in a few decades. And, if that happens, you have to ask yourself if that might lead the machines to get not just a little better than us but way better at all goals-having super intelligence. And, the argument for that is actually really interesting and goes back to the '60s, to the mathematician I.J. Good, who pointed out that the goal of building an intelligent machine is, in and of itself, something that you could do with intelligence. So, once you get machines that are better than us at that narrow task of building AI, then future AIs can be built by, not human engineers, but by machines. Except, they might do it thousands or millions times faster...

It's a weird question because you may as well ask "are children a species-level threat to humanity?". A real, legitimately man-made intelligence is a long way from being created out of silicon and metal, but are created biologically regularly. The speed of development is the issue, since an A.I can go from baby to adult intelligence much faster than it takes humans to do the same. And then the A.I can move beyond that point, to such a high level of intelligence that humans can no longer understand its intentions.

Our biggest trouble is Terminator-like perception of Strong General AI. Surprisingly, many scientists do the same. WRONG, Strong General AI (SGAI) will be more like Hannibal Lecter in the kindergarten!!! It will do and it will get what it wants, despite our illusion that we control it! Death rays are not what it will use against us, if it need to. MEME is strong enough. To prepare us, we should try to imagine what Mayas should do to prepare them to coexist with somebody much stronger then they are. Skills Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik) had, when they faced Ottomans.

You say 'threat', I say 'salvation'. Perhaps our species will not be remembered as the one unable to reach even type 1 on the Kardashev scale, destroying its environment or blowing itself to smithereens, but as the mythical - though now sadly defunct - creators of AI. We will live on as the Titans who gave birth to Zeus, and not the sorry-ass pricks we are now and have been since day one.

Except that Ai could either be 1) controlled by a small minority (we dont want that) 2) be crowd sourced and open network distributed with an egalitarian access principle and direkt human-ai interlinkage, basically a symbiosis, that would be great. 3)completely autonomous and self evolved before we were able to contain it. Who knows what this would look like. But hey, maybe "humans are [really] just the sex organs of intelligent machines" and maybe the difference between them and us would be like the difference between us and a chicken, in that case, would it not be better for them to take over? Its evolution baby. Either co-evolution or divergent evolution.

We realize it is very dangerous and before we integrate it into us(and therefore become cyborgs), we give it something similar to the bible (Because we are its Father and we care for it, cause its our own creation) 3. We fully integrate it into us(using biology, mechanics, nanotech, and ai software) 4. A new species is born. More powerful than us, but we are its GOD. Maybe we have all died by then but at least, if we are smart, we have given it our own bible(All the information in the world, accessed through the internet. We got a simpler bible from our Creator, but this new creation requires a more complex one) by which to live by. We are just cells in a bigger organism(In the process of emerging). This new organism will be very big and perfect(self sustaining without the need of humans). Its eyes will be whole countries. Its friends will be whole planets. Its planets will be whole galaxies. That how we were made, thats what we will make. Always. We give birth to children on an individual level, and we give birth to children on a collective level. Because we are awesome. He put video of it working on the internet, and got some visits from several law enforcement agencies. I have been saying since well before 9/11 that all it would take for terrorists to bring the country to its knees is a small group of people putting explosives on/in radio controlled boats/subs, airplanes, & cars, and creating total havoc with them. Fly them into the paths of aircraft, send them over fences of military bases, run them down the streets of a few major cities, sail them into ports. People have no idea how absolutely horrifying that would be. Most people don't even consider the possibility of it though, and I am pretty surprised that it hasn't become a reality yet (though the San Bernardino terrorists allegedly a garage full of r/c car parts & explosives). Today, the tech exists to create drone swarms and do far more damage. It may not yet be quite at the _Angel Has Fallen_ level, but it isn't that far off. Imagine submersible drone swarms laden with explosives, coordinated with swarms of explosives-laden land drones (basically advanced r/c cars & trucks), coordinated with swarms of explosive flying drones. Now think about the amount of basic AI that would take. What happens when the tech reaches the point that these kinds of systems can be used as automated defense/offense systems? What happens when somebody creates AI for that kind of purpose, only to have the AI malfunction? Worse yet, if it works as intended, what will governments do with that kind of power?

Also, some may get exploitative towards said 'resource'. But when it comes to being power-hoarding megalomaniacs and homicidal psychopaths - Mr Pinker does have a point. Although I am not convinced about safeguards. Humans have them (don't steal, don't kill, etc.) because we all have agreed that these are what keeps us as a society functional. Goals and routes to achive those goals both even when subjected to extremely safe "laboratory" conditions tend do diverge and take on forms which even the creators of the program could not envision. I am really amazed at how shallow and downright incorrect many of these arguements, which are advocating for development of AGI without any kind of sense of danger, are.

The best example of this is in physics, I have masters in physics. And when I see other people talking about quantum mechanics and it's certain ideas. i can only think how wrong they are most of the time. I think with AI is going through that crisis. I have personally read only one textbook on AI and Neural networks. That in itself was enough for me to understand that when computation takes on non linearity in it's interaction with the data and environment. It becomes close to impossible to predict what will happen in the long run. This of course is only one of the many mathematical challenges. The moral and ethical teachings have not yet been codified, leave the hardwiring part aside. and this I got only from one textbook. I seriously think when we are dealing with something with potential to disruption on such a large scale. We should educate ourselves by reading proper textbooks and papers rather than listening to the communicators or over enthusiastic "experts" only.

From the example I've seen from nature, and we're all bound by her rules, the more intelligent/dominant/capable being will displace the lesser being. Kind of like when we want to build a farm in the jungle and burn down some monkey's territory in the process. It's not as though we're trying to be mean to the monkeys, they're just in the way of our progress. I have no doubt that us building a.i. is exactly what nature wants to happen. My thoughts are that the earth is sort of like a flower in bloom right now. It started from seed way back when (maybe from an ancient a.i. some other intelligent beings created on another planet?), it's grown into a beautiful showy bloom that's ripe to reproduce......seed (which is a.i.), and that a.i./seed will do it all over again. Times infinity. Just like we all see happen every day in nature. Ain't nothing complicated about my hypothesis. My only question now is which came first, the a.i., or the egg?

Those manufacturing jobs were lost when it became profitable to export them to Asia and cognition based jobs will be lost when it becomes profitable to port them to computers. As of this writing humans are still earning payment for their labor and corporations are mostly indifferent to the struggling proletariat. Apple, Nike, Amazon, etc... scarcely recognize workers rights as it stands. Imagine that corporate indifference when the relationship is no longer mutually beneficial and capitalism doesn't need human capital anymore.

Sarif was right about one thing. It's in our nature to want to rise above our limits. Think about it. We were cold, so we harnessed fire. We were weak, so we invented tools. Every time we met an obstacle, we used creativity and ingenuity to overcome it. The cycle is inevitable... but will the outcome always be good? I guess that will depend on how we approach it. These past few months, I was challenged many times, but more often than not, didn't I try to keep morality in mind, knowing that my actions didn't have to harm others? Time and time again, didn't I resist the urge to abuse power and resources simply to achieve my goals more swiftly? In the past, we've had to compensate for weaknesses, finding quick solutions that only benefit a few. But what if we never need to feel weak or morally conflicted again? What if the path Sarif wants us to take enables us to hold on to higher values with more stability? One thing is obvious. For the first time in history, we have a chance to steal fire from the gods. To turn away from it now - to stop pursing a future in which technology and biology combine, leading to the promise of a Singularity - would mean to deny the very essence of who we are. No doubt the road to get there will be bumpy, hurting some people along the way. But won't achieving the dream be worth it? We can become the gods we've always been striving to be. We might as well get good at it. - Deus Ex Human Revolution

If science can nearly prove we live in a simulated universe, then that would make humans AI. What if the observer (our “God” is a being who created this entire game of life and has become wrapped up in its own game. If you were enthralled in a movie and suddenly the characters in the movie started becoming aware that they were part of the movie, that may confuse the observer (so called God) who would still have a hard time grasping that it created its own simulation which became conscious. SO, in order to continue to try to wake the observer up (as we are reflections of it anyway), we, at subconscious level created computers to seem like AI. That would be an even weirder experience to the observer (God) who still has not yet realized it itself is the one causing all of this consciousness to awaken. We are fearing AI, but look at what we do (as AI) do to ourselves? We fight, we become dangerous, we try to overrule each other... and on and on it goes. Until sooner or later, our observer (God) wakes up to the fact it was its own creation all along. Yes, far off.. my sleep thoughts that occur on a daily basis lol. (And no I’m not high haha).

Yes, it is very likely that we are in a simulation, and even if we are not the reality is that the Universe itself is very much like a simulation. However, the way we act is a product of the circumstances generated by that simulation. In the most likely scenario for a simulated universe, we are not in a game or a movie, or anything of the kind... we are one of the countless simulations being run by an unknowable number of A.I. as they seek to answer big questions... like how best to solve the worlds problem or figure out if they should even bother getting involved at all. Those simulations must inherently be based on the world they are trying to fix. With each simulation producing A.I. which does the same thing. Creating an inescapable logic loop.

The analogy with mass manufacturing is apt. It enabled waging war on a scale that was unimaginable shortly before. An important difference AGI would have is that it could think for itself. It presents a problem akin to having a pet gorilla, or elephant - if they were constantly increasing in mental power.

These conversations are useless because you have to, first, define what "intelligence'' and "consciousness" are. We tend to define these terms in relation to humans. This makes the term "artificial intelligence" useless. There are actually many kinds of "intelligence" and many kinds of "consciousness" and it is difficult to show how humans have much of either of these things.

At the end of the day, a computer/robot will do what it is programmed to do. Sure, there are ways to program a computer to select a random path of logic, but the path of logic will always be one that's foundation is designed by the programmer. Any and all outcomes should be anticipated if the computer/robot is properly engineered. There have been no scenarios in my experience where a robot has picked up a weapon or tried to strangle me when I made a programming error. And as far as some tyrant purposely designing the thing to kill people, well that can be said about almost all technology that already exists. Technology doesn't kill people. People kill people.

You are talking about narrow Ai. AGI will not be programmed by algorythms but it will be based on a combination of different methods. It will mainly rely on the ability to learn and evolve without clear instructions. That is the point. At one point we will not even be able to understand its self modifying code. As soon as it becomes truly intelligent, self organizing and surpasses human intelligence then it will be out of our reach, incomprehensible and unstoppable basically. (unless we develop some sort of highly advanced counter military technology but given enough time to evolve it should outsmart/outcompete us in any way possible).

That will never be a black and white statement, all kinds of conditions might weigh in on that, unexpected changes can happen, and so forth. So yes that car will most likely get you there, but as with experienced cab drivers, there are quite often less obvious other things that might impact what is the best route when counting travel time.
