Some people are saying this was Raúl Juliá’s final film, but it was his final film released while he was still alive. His actual last movie, released a few months after he passed away, was “Street Fighter,” where he played M. Bison in a scene-stealing role of a lifetime. Honestly, it’s not a great movie, but he elevates it to so-bad-it’s-good.

That part at 15:33 that you said didn't age well was the exact intention at the time; every single "main" cast member chosen for the performance was a slim white blonde girl. All the kids chosen for the Native American roles were PoC, fat, nerdy or disabled. It's a commentary on what is considered "cosmetically pleasing" to white middle class Americans and how passive-aggressive they can be to kids who don't conform. It's the same towards Wednesday and Pugsley.

Blazing Saddles aged really well, because it was a Black- and Jewish-written movie about the white supremacy of the Wild West myth, and this movie ages well because it's calling out the raceism/conformity/ableism of WASP culture. An unironically racist movie (or scene) does not age well, because it's not satire.

15:32 - Amy Fisher - the Long Island Lolita. A girl who shot her lover's wife in the head. The lady survived and Amy went to prison. She was 17. Amy then after her release came on Oprah and other talk shows and then later became a pornographic actress, a reality star, began hanging out with her ex-lover and did all kinds of stupid attention seeking stuff. Don't know what she's doing nowadays but I would think Onlyfans was something she would be into. One of the best things about the Addams Family movies is that the antagonists would actually get along with the Addamses and be willing to help them with whatever financial problems they had if they had just the least bit of chill. The lawyer? He was friends with them for ages but he wanted to rip them off. A psychopath con artist? Surprised she's not a distant cousin. And Deb at the end when she's explaining all of her trauma, they completely understand and sympathize . All she had to do was chill and she would've been welcomed with open arms. She even could've kept trying to murder Fester as stress relief (dude puts arsenic on his Cheerios so good luck). But no, she had to choose...pastels.

As someone who watched Addams Family Values in the theaters when it came out, I need to say that the scene where Gary and Becky cast the play was supposed to come off as racist - so it aged perfectly. The scream at the poster of Michael Jackson was another pop culture reference - around the time the movie was being made/released, allegations had come out that Michael had SA'd a young boy.

  • @SuperDrocket

    @SuperDrocket

    8 ай бұрын

I would disagree with you about your interpretation of the Michael Jackson poster. The first public accusations against MJ came out in August 1993, and the movie was released in November 1993 - given how long it takes to make movies, there's absolutely no way the timing of that works out. The poster beside the one of MJ himself is Heal the World, released in 1991 (which would fit the timing of when the movie was being made.) If you listen to the song/watch the video, it's an extremely schlocky 'love will fix the world' song, which fits in with the rest of the cutesy 'hang in there' cat poster type stuff the cabin is decorated with. Really, just go listen to the Heal the World song and you'll quickly see why such saccharin nonsense would be horrifying to Adams-type personalities.

  • @xejelah

He also wanted to be a dad, so he started with babysitting.

@@xejelah Um, nobody said MJ was part of the Addam's family. I said that the song Heal the World is the sort of fake feel-good nonsense that would horrify anyone that would fit in with the Addams family, which is to say the people in that cabin, which is Wednesday, Pugsley and Joel. And no, people weren't 'freaked out' about MJ before the accusations started. He was considered rather weird, what with the rumors about sleeping in an oxygen tent and living with a chimp, but overall public opinion was pretty positive because he donated a LOT of time and money to good causes.

The female camp councilor was Christine Baranski, she played Leonard's mother on "The Big Bang Theory", maybe you saw her in "Mamma Mia". Joan Cusack is always brilliant, she steals every scene in "In and Out". She's in a lot of films with her brother John Cusack such as "Grosse Pointe Blank" and "High Fidelity". The other Thanksgiving film was "Home for the Holidays" starring Holly Hunter ("Raising Arizona") from 1995. It's very funny, Robert Downey Jr. is in it. The movie I like at Thanksgiving is "The House of Yes" a black comedy that takes place on that day. If you get around to seeing "The Sound of Music" you MUST watch the 1998 "Goodbye Lover" starring Patricia Arquette. You'll see why.

Back in the '90s, Hollywood went on a kick of making movies based upon old TV shows. Most of them sucked, but there were two exceptions -- The Addams Family and The Brady Bunch. They both take the same approach to their material, placing highly stylized characters into a realistic world where they're out of place, it's just the Brady's are sunshine and flowers instead of darkness and daggers. If you like one series, you will like the other.

Sure, she has the B-side plot, but her scenes are the funniest and she has the real arc of being in a terrible place and overcoming it, all whilst finding love on the way. Fester is just...well, he's just an idiot, really. He doesn't learn anything, or even really do anything. Fester's arc is the worst thing about this movie IMO, the real gold is in the summer camp. My favourite part is when Wednesday claws at the wire fence behind her when the others start singing kumbaya at her.

If Fluffy has to swim the English Channel to save the day, you are right there cheering Fluffy on. You never say, "That was stupid". You make watching the reactions fun! :) (The second song in the cabin was "Tomorrow", the theme song from "Annie" (Little Orphan Annie), a totally feel-good kid's movie). Amy Fisher (in the trading cards) shot her lover's wife in the head, but the wife survived. It was very scandalous and juicy, and all over the tabloids. Amy was nicknamed "The Long Island Lolita". After getting out of jail, she became a porn star. And you need to see The Sound of Music. It is a classic and based on a true story, and starring Julie Andrews.

I think that the reason the movies focus on Fester is that everyone else in the family have fairly defined roles from the original comics and TV series. The comics were single panels/single jokes and while they are good would not translate to a full movie. You should watch the TV series as it does capture a lot of the humor from the comics and fleshes out the characters quite well.

Even though the movie takes place during the Summer, it was released during Thanksgiving week on 1993, and there is a play about the First Thanksgiving within the movie. Take all that and the family oriented themes of the franchise as a whole, and The Addams Family Values becomes a great Thanksgiving movie the entire family can enjoy every year.

The male camp counselor was played by Peter McNichol. He played Renfield in the Mel Brooks movie "Dracula: Dead and Loving it!"

I've always believed that if Raul Julia had lived we would have gotten a third Addams Family movie to cap off a trilogy

I just learned today that baby Pubert was played by a pair of twin girls (from a certain point onward, productions started casting twins as single babies, since they can't be on set for as long between rests - that way they can swap out the twins and they'll mostly look the same on camera)

Hopefully you'll give the show Wednesday on Netflix a go. It's actually really good and Christina Ricci (played Wednesday in these movies) does have a significant role. Jenna Ortega does do a wonderful job or portraying Wednesday and the first 4 episodes are directed by Tim Burton.

Oh, I am SO excited for this: an amazing sequel and we get to watch Ashleigh's hair dry!!! Christina Ricci's Wednesday is really next-level top tier, and Joan Cusack's Debbie really should have fit into the family had she just embraced them for who they were. But this sequel is just... outstanding! And the fact Wednesday's Thanksgiving speech is STILL relevant in 2023 is... unthinkable! And the whole "They had sex" is brilliant. This is just... an outstanding film that if you you did not watch the first film you could still follow it without confusion!!

I forgot that was John Cusack's sister in this! They've been in several movies together. Love both of them!

Nathan Lane from "The Birdcage" was the Desk Sargent. For more of Mr. Lane I'd recommend "Mousehunt". 👌 😊
