    I literally just talked about this with my flute teacher! The low notes aren’t coming out as clear as they should be so I experimented with my embouchure and found out that it gets tighter as I play. This video was really helpful, thank you!!

    I am really struggling with this for my flute playing and have been getting frustrated. Thanks to your video I have managed to finally get sound just playing the headpiece with puffy cheeks/relaxed lips etc,. and that has really motivated me! I can't seem to play the whole flute this way yet. I will just keep practicing!

    K this may be a bit long, but it’s worth stating. I’ve been a guitar player and an ukulele player. I wanted to try a wind instrument, and I found the sound and look of a flute to be both brilliant and pleasing. For a while now I’ve been struggling to find my embouchure, let alone achieving high octaves (on purpose) my experience with the flute was becoming soul crushing. I became frustrated to the point of not wanting to pick it up. But I remembered my experience learning the guitar and my determination and so I got home from work (train conductor) and picked up the flute and found this video… and like last time, from watching your video… breakthrough!!! You helped me before but my progress fell back a bit, but now I reinstated what I learned before and added the technique that you demonstrated in this video and I found the perfect spot to position the flute and with the slight Puckering of the lips achieved the higher octave. I can’t tell you how much your videos are helping me find fun and joy in the flute again. Thank you as before. I’m indebted to you.

    Ahhhh!!!! That is so so so cool to hear. When things are not working, it’s always an opportunity. We often end up finding we need to solve a more fundamental problem and this can often catapult us in the right direction!

    I've been working on softening my embouchure for about 4 months and it's really starting to pay off! Intonation in the 3rd register is so much better but what surprised me the most is how much my dynamics have improved. I used to try so hard on dynamics but the contrast was never very noticeable to my ear or anything p or softer and tone would go out the window. All of a sudden over the last few weeks, when I make a dynamics change I have much more range and tone is consistent. It's very encouraging and the biggest improvement I've had to my playing for a few years now.

    Incredibly helpful. I have picked up playing again after a 20 year break (😬), and have been so frustrated by how tense my lips get especially in the high register. Even though I knew I needed to relax the embouchure, I couldn't quite get myself to do it. This video has SAVED my sanity, and my ears frankly. Thank you!

    I have a lot of problems with this. Another lady here on KZread said you need to pull your lips right back to be able to play properly. But I have very full lips that go forward not back 😂 I tried her method but it caused me so much pain I had to give up on it. Looking forward to implementing your ideas when I have watched the whole vid.

    Too true! 🤣Although, I will say that some students find that adding just a little puff really helps the sound 🤷🏻‍♀️ maybe still just temporary until the embouchure settles. Definitely not the most elegant way to play 🤣🤣🤣

    I just started with the Indian bamboo flute and coming from being a violinist and a vocalist, this really is frustrating me! I love your tips and instructions since it makes it much more easier to understand. Do they still work with the Indian bamboo flutes without the lip plate or is there something else that we need to do differently?

    I completely identify with all the tips you went through. Along with other vids you made I tried to correct my weak lower register sound that had no power. I was amazed. After watching your lesson I went my practice room ... picked up the flute and did what you said. And it happened. For a second or two I played bottom C with power and that rich resonant tone. It was great and then I lost it. Anyway over the last week or so I have been practicing on the lower register and achieving that good sound. The problem is it is not consistent. I tend to slip into the the second register. But it takes practice. The last tip on this vid I found out by practice. By a evident I just really relaxed and had kissy lips. I focused in my mind and concentrated on the air being directed and being split on the lip plate. It worked. I can go from low to high by just moving my lips only slightly and directing the speed and angle without getting tight. Now because of your lessons I am very excited because I have never played with this ..... I have to say.... professional sounding tone. I am putting all your advice into action and I am thrilled. You know I am 74 . I gave a little concert to my friends the other week and I made sure that I played in the middle register because I had no confidence trying to play bottom C because it played ... but it was weak with no volume. Itd different now. I love playing that bottom register with power because I love that rich tone. Now I have to practice to get it consistent. Thank you so much for you lessons. One day I will play a piece on my camera....give you my site address and leg you hear it for fun. Thanks. 😅😅😅😅

    I haven’t played in years then picked up the flute just last year when I joined community band…I want to be good enough for a solo again! But my face hurts too much after playing after a very short period of time, and it’s likely because I clench the muscles around my mouth so much to force out a sound. It’s so frustrating!

    I know this is an old video but I have a student who is struggling when trying to play high notes where because of a bump of flesh on the middle of her upper lip (on the inside) her air is splitting into two directions going left and right instead of center as she is condensing her air, have you run into this? or have any solutions

  • @TheFlutePractice

    @TheFlutePractice

    7 ай бұрын

    Yes! While it is fairly common, it is a challenge. Your best bet will be to develop her embouchure to the side, preferably the left side. You can help her learn to close the right side and only open the left. You will just need to place the flute a little to the left on the lip as well and it can help to bring the flute forward a bit (literally pivot the flute forward over the right side of the face) and angle the flute slightly down. Play with this angle until you find it.
