Is A. Lange & Söhne as good as Patek Philippe? | Watch Brand Analysis

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I'm often asked whether watches from A Lange & Sohne are as good as Patek Philippe, and today's video seeks to answer that. Instead of declaring a winner in a straight Lange vs Patek Philippe showdown, I'm going to look at what makes Patek so good to begin with and then discuss how Lange & Sohne measures up to that - in the end it's on you to decide if one is better or if they're on equal footing.
To see if Lange is as good as Patek, I'm looking at 4 criteria that contribute to Patek Philippe's prestige, and seeing how A Lange & Sohne measures up to them:
0:00 Intro
1:26 History
3:00 Innovation
6:03 Movement & Decoration
8:07 Brand Identity
Regardless of the conclusion, there is no doubt that these are two of the best watch brands in the world!
A Lange & Sohne was originally founded in 1845 but lay dormant throughout the latter half of the 20th century due to being nationalized in East Germany, but in 1990 the company was relaunched & has been redefining what we think of German watches by releasing several innovations, as well as elevating the standards of movement finishing.
The honey gold A Lange & Söhne Langematik featured throughout this video highlights some of the key hallmarks of Lange watches - including the big date, German silver main plates, hand-engraved balance cock & blued screws.
What do you think of A Lange & Sohne? Do you think Lange watches are as good as Patek Philippe? Which is your favorite watch from both brands? Let me know in the comments below!

    Let’s not forget that Lange pushed Patek to rethink the way they were designing their chronographs - once the Dato was released PP had no choice but to abandon the lamania based movements in favor of in house designs. I will also say that Lange finish all their movements to the same incredibly high standards, not just the ones you’d find in higher end models (unlike all 3 members of the holy trinity) - aesthetically it’s really a matter of preference, but for me personally, I’d take Lange over Patek, VC, and AP 10 times out of 10

    Very true, I did allude a bit to their keeping the same standards even on their "entry level" Odysseus - its something really admirable, even with Patek you can see the difference in standards between an Aquanaut and a Calatrava for example, but with Lange they go all out no matter which model it is. As for the building twice it just goes to show again that Lange really spares no expense and demonstrates their enormous integrity as a watch manufacturer despite being part of a bigger conglomerate. Thanks for watching & highlighting even more what makes Lange such an amazing brand :)

And also Lange has had wayyy more inovations, even since the 90s, than you listed. By the way, I´m talking as a watchmaker myself here :) nonetheless good video my friend

A lot depends where you go, I live in India for example right now and you can get by pretty well with just English, but somewhere like Chile (where I'm from) you need at least a little basic Spanish to get by, but then in lots of countries in Europe most people speak some basic English at least so its easier and easier to travel without knowing the local language, but it doesn't hurt to know a few languages just to make things easier or to turn down the tourist treatment hehe.

I would say Patek is the more glamorous of the 2. There is a flair and style Patek has when worn. It has a class about it. Not that Lange doesn’t but in a different way. Lange’s detail your attention is outstanding. You can’t find a speck of dust on it. Nice video. I still dont have either a PP or A Lange. But I am looking at a 403.035 and a 5712. The thing that holds me back with the 403.035 is the bad retain of value when compared to 5712(which I think is a more boring watch). Do you think that the 403.035 in the future can gain in value?

  • @ShahLusso

    @ShahLusso

    3 жыл бұрын

    I normally don't put much stock into value retention as a deciding factor, but that being said when I do I'd look at it more from the perspective on buying smart - the lower value retention means that on the pre-owned market you can get much better value when buying, which in a way can hedge against any future depreciation (with most watches the first owner will take the biggest value hit, so you're safer going pre-owned). I wouldn't bet on the Lange would increasing in value necessarily, but looking at the chrono24 historical data it's been relatively stable at an average price of 44k since Jan 2018 so I also don't think you'd lose much if anything on selling it as long as you buy it at the right price. I would say though that it might take longer to sell the Lange just because fewer people know about them, but I think those that do are properly interested in them and are willing to pay what they're worth - conversely, a 5712 has broader appeal and can probably sell faster but that's also why the price for a pre-owned 5712 starts at 77k (Chrono24) on a bracelet vs the Lange which is at ~45k. If it was my money I'd go for the 403.035 vs the 5712 because IMO its a more interesting & better-looking watch (with a much better-looking movement too) - but I don't factor resale value very highly in my preferences so take my opinion with a grain of salt if value retention is a higher priority for you. Hope that helps & let me know which one you end up going with (both are great watches at the end of the day!)

    Great addition, without a doubt there's no shortage of Patek innovations, especially when one considers that a lot of their innovations they made for pocket watches first & then reengineered for wristwatches as well, the ones mentioned in the video barely scratch the surface of the contributions Patek's made to the watch world, especially in the late 1800s & early 1900s

  • @ShahLusso

    @ShahLusso

    Lange unfortunately doesn't officially assert a specific accuracy rating like Patek Philippe. On their website they do allude to ensuring precision and adjusting in 5 positions (same standard as COSC) however nothing as specific as the -3/+2 specified by Patek (which also adjusts to 6 positions instead of 5). Going purely off what each brand officially attests to, I would assume that most likely modern Patek Philippes would be more accurate, but by how much is hard to say without any official figures to compare and it would probably end up varying across different Lange movements, so since there weren't any official figures to compare I decided not to compare them directly on an accuracy basis. Hopefully though that gives more context :)

  • @ShahLusso

    @ShahLusso

    2 жыл бұрын

    Uff, its a tough call, IMO so much depends on what else is in your collection and how much you like the Rolexes you'd be selling. With how Rolex prices are these days, sellers remorse is a costly mistake 😂 Really the only downside to the Saxonia is that being a stright up dress watch it doesn't have the same versatility that a Rolex would have, so if your collection doesn't have anything else to fill that versatility gap you may miss the Rolexes. But if you can get past that and you're not too concerned with resale value then I'd say go for the Lange - the presence on the wrist, the insane quality of the movement decoration are just mind blowing. Even though this video is really old, the Lange's movement is still undefeated in terms of best looking movement decoration that I've seen. Hope that helps! :)

That watch is just bad ass. Especially if you are a traveler who loves Rolex GMT watches. Answer: No Way...at this corner of the watch market, everything matters and is taken into consideration when spending this kind of money. Patek Philippe stands above all else in heritage, value retention, even value appreciation and brand perception. Lange has invented "extras" for their complications, Patek invented the complications. Lange likes to create new complicated watches for the sake of saying "look at us"..the double and triple split chronos are good examples. You lose the useful complications such as moon phase, perpetual calendar, leap year etc...and gain the extra split functions..getting less watch in my opinion. Patek has mastered pretty much every complication better than their rivals. Lange only competes in the chronograph conversation, beautiful movement on the Dato. Patek will always be the brand all others are chasing.

    Off course, Lange and Sohne are in the same league as Patek Philippe. Like BMW and Mercedes, like Bentley and Rolls Royce, like Porche and Lotus. Like Lions and Tigers, like Atlantic and the Pacific oceans. Purely preference its subjective.

    Lange makes great watches but fails so hard in marketing and brand awareness that it is becoming a joke nowadays. Part of the reason is that their line is 100% dress watches and with the sports/rubber strap watches being supported by people's increasing desire to dress casually and be more active, the dress watch is not coming back anytime soon. Their latest Odyseuss shows the level of desperation they are at when it comes to missing this boat. Such is the fate of IWC, JLC, Moser, Vacheron, and any other high end dress watch concentrated brand. Lange at the very high end still make the best complicated watches and chronographs but the clientele at that level will not be able to sustain this brand alone.

    Interesting parallel drawn to some of those other Richemont brands (plus Moser), and you might be on to something - Patek Philippe & Audemars Piguet had the option to be bold & shake up their respective lineups in the 70's (Nautilus + Royal Oak) & then again in the 90's (Aquanaut + Offshore) in large part due to being independently operated, while Lange may have been held back due to potential overlap with Vacheron, Jaeger & IWCs sports watches - apparently the sports watch project was thought up as far back as 10 years - who knows what their brand perception & position would have been like if they had released it earlier I wonder. One thing's for sure though, when it comes to integrity about quality & decoration Lange definitely makes no compromises, and you're right their chronographs & high complications are amazing.

    @@ShahLusso ive been following the brands for more than a decade and its just disappointing to see lange iwc jlc etc slide into oblivion. Granted they might be crafted well at their respective price points but luxury is an emotion. This is something that rolex AP hublot RM Patek have succeeded in doing. There is a crowd you associate with for each of the successful brands. With the richemont group, they end up selling only a watch, which is not good enough...

    The more exposure I have to this brand the more I agree, Lange really is another level & more than deserves a place in the top tiers of watchmaking, especially with things like the triple split and Zeitwerk...amazing watches :D

    He states that you do not need to see Lange engraved on the piece to know its a Lange, well you cant ignore it as it's cheaply engraved on every part of the watch, everyone in the watch industry will know (or should do) that Patek Philippe is the brand that every other looks up to, just simply increasing the price of your watches does not make it a better watch..
