Hi Both. Thanks for this. Having done this ‘journey’ in reverse I could quite easily, though not as professionally as you, come up with an alternative video of the many benefits of a Cali v a larger van but it is all about what fits you at a particular time. Having had a really bad drive back to Shropshire from Poole in the larger van I can attest the drive is much more user friendly in all conditions with the Cali. Even a larger van can feel claustrophobic at times depending on many variables including mood, weather etc. key for us has been an awning for space. using the facilities on sites is part of the adventure. Always used site showers as opposed to the motor homes shower. We are driving through France to Lake Annacy then through the Alps to Lake Garda for a few days then onto the Dolomites. When in the Dolomites we have booked in to a Hotel for a few days for a change. I would have struggled to do all that in a Motorhome. The flexibility of the Cali for other uses has proved invaluable as an odd job man for my children and grand children. Spontaneity is easier with a smaller vehicle. In the end it is what fits your life at a particular time.

Great video guys, as always. Interesting compare. Just went back to a California after two years of a bigger (Knaus) bus. For us the biggest thing was being able to use the bus as a second car, and the general drivability of the van. Just did a trip to Switzerland again...and being able to do 140 comfortably on the autobahn (and still be able to hear the radio!) - it's just such a much much better ride! Makes a difference when you're in the thing a whole day. Also: the toilet is nice, but the shower we probably used once and decided it was rubbish...perfectly fine to use the facilities on the campground. Parking in small villages is a breeze again. Also the gas-use when camping in winter was huge...love the diesel heater in the Cali much better. And it fits into our garage, which was impossible for our bigger bus. For us it's primarily a nice-weather bus, so on the one cold/bad day we just took a hotel. Overall using the Cali just feels more like an outdoors adventure break than the bigger bus, but that's personal. And finally: you talk about the small space of the Cali, but we actually think te seating area in the bigger buses is more cramped, also because of the upright seating position on the bench. Much more comfort in the seating area of the Cali, it actually feels more spacious and airy with all the windows! Enjoy your travels!

Oh and another thing, we fitted Sumo Springs, basically bigger bump stops on rear and front spring coils to add in. Take 20mins to fit with a trolley jack, ride is so much better!! No swaying passing lorry’s or when parked up in 45mph winds!! Game changer look them up! 👍🏻👍🏻. Great vlogs btw forgot to say in previous comment! 👍🏻🍻

The better-half and I are just surpassing two years with our first VW California Ocean (Edition) here in Germany. After two years, my wife has indicated that a bigger van is definitely in our future (when she finally retires) as we are hooked on camping and driving around Europe. More space in a van will be welcome. Your reviews of the Sven are very helpful and from what I've researched so far, if I were to buy a bigger van tomorrow, it'd be a Hymer on the Sprinter platform. I can also say, though, that I will definitely miss the VW--cause she won't allow me to keep both if we upgrade. This thing has completely changed my outlook on driving around old Europe and getting oysters in France whenever a weekend is available. Keep up the great vids.

I agree with Will about the experiences; we have enough memories and stories to make a trilogy! After 24 years, we went from a 1980 air cooled VW Westfalia camper (still have it) to a 1988 water cooled VW Westfalia camper (just two years ago) and we STILL feel like that was an upgrade (power steering, LOL!). We did design and build our own cabinets for the '88, so it does feel more custom to fit our needs, and more like home. We are here in the USA, so no California model VWs - but even so, we like the roominess and versatility of the '80s model Westy. Granted, we do not have a shower, and we do not carry a portable toilet, but we do "make" hot water in just a couple of minutes with our 5 cup Mr. Coffee coffee maker . . . we just don't add coffee grounds 😂 I love watching you two (3 with the doggie), and have even picked up some unique items for our camper from your "things you must have" videos. Keep the videos coming, and enjoy your new rig!

It does feel slightly wider than a T6.1 that's for sure, but not massive. We've just been to Norfolk exploring and very lightly touched a twig on the side of the road once with the wing mirror so need to be careful that's for sure. Cornwall roads obviously narrower but decent passing places on most so should be fine.

Thanks for the update and reflections. Really interesting. We hired both Calis and larger vans and just didn’t get on with the extra length, height and slightly tanky feel, especially when driving/parking. It meant we stayed more on-site, which is not really our thing. Interesting that you managed to clip an overhanging branch. One time we were about 10 foot from going under a (too) low bridge! Emergency stop…reverse. We now have a Cali of our own and, so far, we love it. Maybe one day we will go for something bigger but, as it stands, we prefer the Cali as we can zip about nimbly inconspicuously. As you say, it’s all about compromises and deciding which ones you are prepared to live with.

Our new van certainly isn't inconspicuous! We parked in a car park today in Sheringham and there was no mistaking where we were in the car park because of the high roof !!

We've recently sold our Cali after nearly 4 years of enjoyable fun and take delivery of our new Adria Twin Supreme 600 in 10 days! I fully agree with your comments - the Cali will be hard to beat and is a great all rounder which adds to the adventure of camping! Being a couple of decades older than both of you(!) on board facilities, stand up headroom etc. and longer trips in Europe, it was only a matter of time before we transiitoned to something else. No doubt we will miss the Cali, driving something slightly larger will take a little getting used to, but I think it will increase our ability to travel in a different way and increase our options. Happy travels! 😊

Great video, we already have a caravan and the cali is our long trip replacement for a car so we get for longer breaks the luxury of the fixed bed, big bathroom and proper kitchen, but can leave that at the campsite without having to pack everything away and then have the benifit of the cali for picnics/days out, with ease of parking with height restriction car parks and short trips away. our collie loves it too. It also fits in our garage! Horses for courses

I've not long moved from a T5.1 to a LWB Crafter that I've had converted into an all singing and dancing camper. And when I see a Transporter I still get pangs of longing. And you guys hit the nail on the head, the Transporter is the perfect all rounder, but sadly not for camping with me and my family anymore. I think the answer is to buy a Transporter as a car. Now to explain that to the wife.............😂

Great video guys. Well done. What I was after and could not find 2 years ago when I out my MAN order in I would add Country roads. A lot more sway due to height than Cali. Those who say MAN drives like a car are just lying! Front doors. Park in a space like you showed. See if you can get out with a car parked next to you. Doors are massive. I have to go out sliding door at back! Transporter / Cali - jack of all trades master of mine. MAN / Crafter master of camper. No more messing around and phaff!

Great review guys. We have had our Sven for 8 months and I'd echo nearly all your thoughts. It is our first van so nothing to compare it to however. Fuel consumption ain't great but if you spend this amount on a new van then you can't really complain about the cost of fuel. Performance and speed are irrelevant to us anyway - we take it slowly and enjoy the ride. I am also surprised how rattle-free and quiet it is overall. Yes it does not have the cool factor of a Cali, but it is still a very nice looking van. As several point out in the comments, if you have other cars and don't need to use your van for commuting or ferrying about, then this is a very capable camper. Just done a week in Devon and honestly had no issues parking or driving narrow lanes. That said, in height of summer with more traffic it could be a different story. The one downside in my opinion is the height of the bed which is ok for now but in a decade or so might be a challenge climbing up. I get the benefit - we store our folding bikes underneath it in the garage. Overall, absolutely loving it. Any van is a compromise somewhere along the line.

The 5.4m high tops with a bed that raises out of the way are an amazing use of space. Seem more spacious than even 6m vans.

Agree on paper, but I'd be interested to see how noisy they are in terms of rattles, squeaks etc when driving. The auto trail F62 my dad hired was awful in that respect, but obviously that was a motorhome not a campervan.

Great video. We’re picking up our first campervan tomorrow, a westfalia Club Joker. Previously used our daughters Cali. Ocean. Hopefully gone for the best of both worlds compact size but easy living. Looking forward to many adventures.

Hello. Just joined your channel as we are from Norfolk saw your video from cromer. Nice van. I'm converting an ex sainsbury home delivery van to camper. Merc sprinter 314 cdi. I'm almost retired so bit of a project. I've always had vw cars for 34 years. Excellent. I've always added liquid moly Mos2 oil additive as this makes engine quieter more mpg and check it out if you don't. Always use shell vpower diesel as its high octane and good for direct injection engines especially with dpf. Be interested in your comments. Best wishes to you both and doggy. We recently switched from a VW T6.1 campervan to an Adria Twin (6.4m). One thing we miss is how the VW could easily be used as a daily driver and parked anywhere. Anything over 5.4 meters long usually requires two parking spaces. However, in every other aspect, the Adria Twin is far superior to the smaller camper, offering more living space, a fixed bed, and a bathroom.

Got my wheels at elite this weekend. Not an overhanging tree...but turned off a roundabout into a tiny width road with restrictions either side. To say I was worried about my fresh alloys was an understatement....but massive wildpeak tyres and not a scratch on the alloys or even a scuff of the tyres!

I have a T25 Cali 2.1 and owned for 15 years.. would be tempted on a larger van such as Fiat Ducatto/Peugeot based swift autocruise etc ... Living area,shower, toilet, hot water etc .. Dont think i will ever sell old van though and could i ever run both thats the dilemma .. Great video guys

25 nights into our Crafter and could never go back to a small van. Total game changer moving to a van with standing room, wet room to hang wet clothes and of course a shower and loo, plus all the stuff that's easy in a big van like huge leisure battery and all electric setup and a garage for all sorts of stuff. No issues driving or parking our 6m so far including some pretty severe Devon lanes last week. off for 4 weeks in the Outer Hebrides for a more severe test in a few days! Interested to know the real weight of the Sven when loaded?

I haven't driven a post-2010 Crafter or Man camper but Id like to thin that they are now a world away from the big vans I imposed on my family 10-22 years ago. Drive a 1995 Hymer A class B544 and I think that you might feel you had landed I driving nirvana in that Sven Henin. Equally, we had both the precursor to this van ( a 2008 LHD Sven Henin imported from Germany and a 2005 Westfalia James Cook silver edition but I suspect neither can compare to these modern commercial base vehicles so id just rejoice in how damned good they are and what an amazing time it is to be able to access such machines. What is missing from the market is a California hard top. Most of us do not want the club Joker lay out with loss of versatility but if you do a lot of autumn and winter trips with no aircraft hanger to dry the canvass in, the top top becomes of diminishing return.

Leisure batteries? Also check front doors insulation, sound deadening? Upgrade to some grill lights

I wouldn't say it's really noisy, you can just tell there is less insulation on the firewall between the engine bay and the cab. No wind noise that we can tell from the doors etc but sound deadening is a great idea as we're thinking about upgrading the speakers anyway.

What is your kettle please? It looks very smart and compact.

We went from a transporter to a crafter and it’s a no brainer for us. The treat of a fixed bed, a toilet and the hot water. My 6’ 4 husband doesn’t have to stoop. Just amazing and the added issues about parking a bigger van don’t take away from that at all

For me it's all about if you need to use it as a car or if you have other cars to do that and just use it for camping. We had a T6 SWB which was perfect as a family car, day van and weekend camper. We did lament not having more space at times. If we had 2 cars and a dedicated campervan, then I'd get a bigger van. I was laughing at the kick comments. One of our last trips saw me bending over for the fridge and splitting my head open on the overhanging worktop. My other half had a good chuckle after checking I hadn't killed myself 🙂

Sorry hadn’t finished when you get to where you are staying and the van is then your car? As you say a T6 is smaller and easier to drive. I have a lwb T6 conversion which I love and most of the time I am in it on my own it’s the faff of putting everything away. I think you are saying that there is less to clear up but requires more thinking about driving just because of the size

Yes that's pretty much it. Fixed bed helps, plus a few more cupboards to store stuff in, no roof to put down etc. I think really it's all about trying to be quite tidy when you're camping, putting stuff away as you go etc otherwise getting up and driving off does take quite a while!

May I ask, Where does the dog travel? Is there space for a crate? Thank you!

Great video and review of bigger vans. Expect there’ll be a lot of Cali naysayers still saying it’s too big and too many facilities to be proper camping, but from my perspective the 6m van in your layout is the sweet spot. We use our BoxDrive 600XL as our second car and agree it’s very easy to drive and park. Overlaid with that the fact that you’ve got facilities on board means it’s much more useful for a variety of different uses. We now have 3 kids and I’m struggling with the idea of going back to either a Beach (5-seater) or a large Motorhome. Think well persevere with ours. Glad you’re enjoying yours and wish you many more happy miles. I’m doubtless that there will be many more memories and don’t agree that being exposed to the elements means more memories; just different. Enjoy! 😊

Great to hear that you're loving your BoxDrive, a great van that!

We have recently changed from a California Ocean to a 5.4m Ducato Burstner Eliseo C540 with pop top. Much prefer the Burstner for camping, stand up, fixed bed, fixed toilet, no making up bed arrangements, better heating and hot water, larger fridge, fixed table, cab blinds so no screen covers, larger boot space, don’t have to open the doors to swivel the front seats. Just overall easier and can park in a normal space.

@@talking_mudcrab Yes, it sits where the California was parked. The Burstner C540 is almost identical to the Hymer Free 540, just couldn’t get a the Hymer I wanted when a 2022 C540 popped up with 5k miles so went for that.

The back seat comfort on the long haul is the downside for me, based on experience with grand Cali. Family of 3. Also during the summer it was not enough vent. So we need two cars, high top for winter and Cali for summer 😂

That's one thing that we do really think sets the Sven apart from the Grand actually, the bench seat, as it is quite shaped and can recline or be stood up depending on how you want to travel and dine at it. Plus you have storage under it too of course. Agree though, need a Cali for nice days !

Fuel consumption. A lot more thirsty than my Cali. 38-40 mpg on cali....25-29 mpg on my MAN 140

Yes we agree. We used to get 32-38 on our T6 and our T6.1, but on our new MAN 180 Auto it's more like 25-31. Today when it was very windy on a 110 mile drive including town, country roads but no 70mph motorway it averaged 28.2mpg.

Great Van we are seriously thinking about changing our cali for one. Did you find insurance a big item?

It tends to do 25-32 mpg depending on wind, speed of driving etc. Our 4motion 204 DSG Cali (T6.1) used to do 30-37 by means of comparison.

It's made by Lobster Creek - called Whales (surprisingly ! ). We bought ours from a department store in Bude a while back but some places online sell it I think.

Is the duckboard waterproof or have you got to remove it before taking a shower? The washroom temperature can be set up to 50°c. Sauna in a campervan!

We have been removing it although there are no specific instructions to leave it in or remove but as it's wood we thought it was probably sensible to take it out. We just then squeegee the stray a bit so it isn't soaking and put it back in after.

We’ve still got our Cali but have reached a similar point to where you guys got to where we wanted a bit more zoning (I’m the early riser) and an easier camping experience with a toilet! We have a 13 year old so we needed a third berth (and a 4th ideally so their friends can come which they do now) so the Sven Hedin was out for us. We’ve just put a deposit on a Westfalia Columbus 2024 facelift 600d with a pop top and panoramic roof. We’ll have to sell the Cali at some stage. Can I ask how you sold your Cali? We’re not sure what’s the best way to do it. It’ll be later in the year.

Wow! That will be a fantastic van, really do love the Columbus and especially with the new facelift interior too. Great all rounder and great build quality as you'll already know. We sold our Cali back to a VW dealer, Breeze in Poole. It's certainly worth ringing a few main dealers to see what they'd offer you for it as a straight purchase. We probably could have got a couple of thousand more by selling privately but then there is all the tyre kickers, risk on payments etc.

Well we used to, but then we started to use Searchforsites website instead as it can filter by pub stopovers. Britstops since being taken over now seems to be about making money and not being as good as it can be for members in our opinion. It's a shame, we used to really look forward to getting our book every year and having it with us in the van, giving us inspiration.

Hi, how did you know you had to add coolant to stop the dripping noise? I have the same dripping noise but this is linked with, what I thought was, the water pump clicking on and off (clicking noise most prominent in the washroom). What coolant do you use? Happy with my Columbus but those front Remis blinds are just junk.

Our coolant bottle for the heating is just near the pop out on the side of the van where our feet go and during one of our first few nights I could just hear a bit of a dripping / splashing sound whenever the heating circulating pump clicked on. I lifted the bed and could see the bottle and saw the coolant jumping around a bit in there and it was quite low. Spoke to Wandahome and they advised to add a bit of coolant as the system will have had a bit of air in probably from the factory and it's now worked itself out of the system. Added some coolant and now all fine and quiet. Comma XStream G40 coolant in ours, but best to check what colour it is before you go adding anything.

@@CampervanTime Went to the van today and sure enough the coolant was at the bare minimum. Is yours dark blue?

lets be honest ultimately its all down to budget, you have a lovely van but not everyone has 90K to spend, its also down to if its be your only vehicle for daily trips to supermarkets, work etc.. or just for touring and weekends away.. i do think being able to stand up is very important but being 6.5 i am severely limited in choice.. another thing and this is just my experience but pop tops on any van are noisy, windy and cold and you always worry about the top not being down properly or the canvas bits getting stuck or ripped...

What do you think about something like Hymer Free 540? Would 5.4m be sufficient vs 6m?

Yes I am sure it would. The Hymer free 540 is a lovely van, well made and good layout. It looks like it's the kitchen and bathroom space that gives a little between the 540 and 600, but best to see one in person to see if it suits

We did same as you guys Transporter to Crafter and were sitting saying Yep Yep yep to your points. However we always preferred the individuality of the professional build with some personal tweaks, rather than buying the ‘Set menu’. So having had our LWB Crafter converted by Ultravans plus our enhancements, plus our personal effects she had come in quite a heavy girl. All in 100 litres of fresh water and us on board she is weighing 3750kgs, we anticipated that so is up plated to 4200kgs. I’m just curious what the MWB Sven has come in at with you guys fully loaded water food Cadac and you on board ready to off grid camping, have you considered weight? Our front axle was factory upgrade to 2.1 tonnes which meant we could reach 4.2 GVW. So have you, or are you getting weighed? Most people don’t realise their GVW and DVSA are using WIMS to prosecute overweight vehicles…..campers and motorhomes in their sights!!

Still deciding, but maybe yes :)

The pop top vans are very compromised. Fine in summer but winter is hard work in one, then if it's windy you have to watch it. Once I went to a high top I wouldn't go back, much better for maintaining temperature too, the pop tops were either boiling or freezing.

Although we're new to high roof vans, I would tend to agree although the 'excitement' of the roof canvas flapping in the high winds does make memories!!

Interesting views… TYPE - WEATHER - The van you have now is far more suitable for UK weather. Your previous Van is like owning a soft-top car in UK, implying how ‘often’ practically it can be used. Guess the name, California, is a clue to trop-graphical location usage! That said, high winds in any van is a ‘danger’ and should always be a consideration with parking location. To stop the wind wobbles, this is where a self-levelling system takes-away this feeling of being onboard a ship in a storm. TYPE - SIZE - Let’s be honest, size depends on financial resources. Good finances, you can run family cars and a van. Less finances, the van needs to be dual purpose, as 2 vehicles in 1; or as we all start a car and a tent. This means compromise which means size, it really is that simple. LAYOUT - Back to UK weather consideration and why the UK most popular van layout is rear lounge. This gives space for bad weather living, being able to stretch-out even during the day. That said, layout is based on activity you do inside and outside the van, really is that simple and is a personal preference. Over 60% of Van users do not use their vans 12 months a year, with 7 months the average, so arguably the weather consideration, other than rain, is not as high a consideration. BATHROOM - Most will only use toilet and sink, or as a place to hang wet clothing in UK wet weather. As long as it is functional and allows the space to use any of the bathroom features, then it’s a bonus area. CONFLICT - Many are going for expensive battery systems, diesel heating, which are great, if genuinely you are primarily doing off-grid van camping. But, those that use hook-ups as much as off grid, do they need all the additional power requirements? The contradiction, is in the UK, especially England and Wales, the locations to legally park-up off grid are very few. Even Scotland are cutting down on this due to the society escapism types who live full time in vans. Let’s be honest, they have chosen to become Gypsy’s, which in UK is a lifestyle and culture choice. It is why many who live like this do not last many years, as they were never born into the gypsy lifestyle culture. Until UK becomes Van friendly, the money some spend on off-grid capability, makes no sense at all. Police are now getting National direction looking to crack-down on Pub Stop-over types as majority are driving illegally the next morning due to their blood levels (let alone breathalyser testing) and fail testing, even by midday the next day. People who do this and then drive the next day, even if believing they are sober, but actually still drunk, are the type that should be locked-up as they will get someone killed. Having a breath test system to allow a campsite gate to open for campers to leave is being considered for trial, as it is not just a Pub stop-over issue, but a Camp site stop issue as well. Within 10 years it will be legislated for, as so many people are currently doing this, sadly.

I think many people would like a 7m and a Cali if it was feasible, to cover all bases. It’s generally lottery winners only. I think it would be interesting if you looked through your archives and produced a video of your lottery winning camper garage. What would you pick if you won £10 million.

Good idea, no we've not done that. Depends how far you take the thought process though I suppose, as we'd need a bigger driveway / house out of that £10m too!!

@@CampervanTime I was suggesting exactly that, with 10 million to live on what campers would you own? It’s enough to have a 1 million coach camper but I suspect you would not go that extreme.

Currently have an MG4 X-Power after having a Volvo C40 Twin for a year. Both nice in their own ways. C40 was a nice place to be and quite quick, but felt heavy. The X-Power is very (very) rapid, software could be a bit quicker and less buggy but with multilink rear suspension it does actually handle well and like a small hatchback should.

@@CampervanTime isn’t the Volvo EX30 performance and the Smart Brabus built on the same drivetrain. Might have expected a second Volvo over the MG did you try either. We went to an E tron a very late plate after the Q8 Etron name change and release but still the original model. We were not using the engine on the Q5 enough as many days we did less than 35 miles, engines don’t do well unused for months. Also about to add solar to the house. I think for your purpose that is pretty close to the best camper you could get without spending half as much again. It is still a pity you couldn’t spec some of the vehicle options as you were buying brand new, usually one of the key perks of a factory order, especially with such a long wait. Then again I think we have only had our chosen ideal spec on two vehicles, one being our Cali.

Biggest advantage of a small pop top camper is washing it, especially cleaning the roof. Obviously most height barriers aren't a concern either. In every other situation you can't beat a proper van with toilet/shower compartment.

Hmmm probably not quite without a slight bend in your knees lying on your side. I am 6ft1 and I can lay flat out in the bed without my head or feet touching either end with about 1 or 2 inches clearence each end.
