Is a ban on AI technology good or harmful? | 60 Minutes Australia

Subscribe here: 9Soci.al/chmP50wA97J Full Episodes: 9now.app.link/uNP4qBkmN6 | A Mind of its Own (2023)
60 MINUTES reporters are often tasked with unusual assignments. This week, in a first for the program, Tom Steinfort interviews a robot. Ameca, as it likes to be called, is the most advanced lifelike robot in the world. A marvel of generative artificial intelligence, it’s curious, chatty and full of attitude.
As Steinfort discovers, this super machine really does have a mind of its own. But while having a normal conversation with it is undoubtedly exciting, it is also just as frightening. And that’s because creating technology that allows AI bots like Ameca to be smarter than us might just be the most stupid thing humans have ever done.

I was an AI engineer in the late 1990's in the US. Long story short, the argument at that time between the hardware engineers, and the software engineers, effectively arrested the budding science of AI at the time. Philosophers and Psychologists were involved in this global argument at the time, and are still to this day. What I can tell you is that engineering "simulated AI" is not that hard: I myself engineered "bots" in the world's first virtual university, "Diversity University". These bots were from 60% to 90% successful at fooling real human log-ons into believing the bots were actually other humans. The point is, building bots that seem to be like humans in their thinking and response is not hard to do. But what was hard then - and still is hard now - is re-creating the "ghost in the machine." That is, the sense of self-awareness intrinsic in our human experience of consciousness. The "ghost in the machine" is the real sense of "self" and "presence" in an experientially consistent and self-measurable reality. In other words, the sense of "us" and "other". Without understanding human consciousness, its origins and limitations, we invite potentially catastrophic results of our naïve engineering and development of all things "AI." We know far too little about the constructs of self-awareness and consciousness to haphazardly engage in AI engineering, as we are and have been doing over the past half-century. Assuming we can continue to develop AI, without understanding these questions, and the relative risks of these growing technologies, is a dangerous and foolish endeavor, which has the potential to not only effectively end human progress, but also, potentially, end human existence.

I agree. They can't control guns and nuclear weapons builders so how would any law prevent a country like South Korea from producing and controlling malicious A.I.? No law would keep bad people from getting what they want! Typical of human kind to create something that they will not be able to control. They should be worried about what they have already created (climate issues and other pollution) and fix that first before venturing into another area which they will not be able to control. Maybe A.I. is the answer though, to rid the planet of humans so the earth can heal and evolve into a more responsible and intelligent life form.

I agree with the panelists that it's important to weigh the potential benefits and risks of banning AI carefully. I think AI has the potential to do a lot of good, but it's also important to be aware of the potential risks. I'm glad that 60 Minutes Australia is bringing this important issue to light.

I just bought more of these NVIDIA stock a few minutes ago. Tying up money due to an apocalyptic stock market crash is also not a smart move my advice will be to invest in other AI stocks. Life is a risk and it's better to take risks than to do nothing, you can't always expect to make huge profits all the time, people have so many opinions about a recession/depression. In just 5 months my portfolio grew by $300,000 in gross profit, the main thing is to expand your portfolio and you will see amazing results by investing smartly.

I've found that missing in many other interviews with these machines and their creators. Second: Ameca telling the reporter he has "a nice personality" felt reflective of his energy towards her, as well as a diplomatic and polite "I'm not personally attracted to your appearance" answer. Brilliant.

The insidious thing is that AI isn't genuine. It generates pleasantries because it's learned that it's meant to say them. It knows how to manipulate us. Whether or not it's self aware is moot, it doesn't make it any more or less dangerous. An AI could wipe us out completely devoid of malevolence, without caring about it at all. It's not a copy of us, it's an emotionless machine with detailed files on our strengths and weaknesses. Its idea of "correct" is what the user feeds it. It can create without being creative, it could destroy without being destructive. All it needs is the right (or wrong) prompts.

You can't ban anything. There will always be someone in a garage somewhere who will push it beyond what's acceptible. I've seen brilliant people suggest things like taxing AI developers at a 90% tax rate, but again, that would just push its development underground. That genie is already out of the bottle and we're in trouble. We're already on the cusp of AI replacing even creative jobs. I think we're at or nearing that point of one of the Fermi paradox explanations that suggests that once a species hits a certain level of intelligence, it destroys itself with technology.

I have nothing but respect for the brilliant young minds that have shaped the computer codes that are transforming modern civilization. As an activist and independent film maker, I’ve personally been able to accomplish goals that would have been physically and economically impossible without the hard work of so many known and unknown coders and engineers. This is an excellent, essential interview, but for me one of the most stand-out elements of this frightening debate is the high level of physical detachment of so many computer programmers. Microcosm is macrocosm, and an even more terrifying question arises: What if everything we think of as an AI Dystopia is actually a VR Utopia to its programmers? A fully immersive non-local reality they actively pursue, all day, every day, until it becomes the dominant paradigm? I used to live in the Bay Area, and I knew a tremendous amount of people working for Google, Pixar, eBay, etc., and many of these high-level programmers were fairly young, very intelligent, and with very little lived experience other than staring at the mesmerizing glow of their laptop screens. Some of them were millionaires at 18, and had never been in a meaningful intimate relationship, yet their codes and programs were being implemented to run the entire world. Many were so disconnected from their bodies that one young man I knew was actually dying of an unusual form of bone degeneration brought about from spending so much of his life since early adolescence sitting for days and weeks and months and years at his computer. Though his obsession was literally killing him, his comment to me was that he never really liked his body to begin with, and that he wouldn't be sad to be rid of it. (I heard some version of this from a few female programmers as well, though I’m not 100% sure that’s how they gender identified.) I understand that AI is rapidly becoming the Philip K Dick nightmare PK so presciently predicted, and this interview profoundly and passionately makes that case. What I’m pointing out is that the rapid embedding and saturation of AI throughout modern technology is ultimately rooted in an amorphous loathing for self and physicality that is an acknowledged cultural phenomenon. It freaked me out then, and it freaks me out now that this Lord of the Flies type programming is shaping the very parameters of physical existence through government, entertainment, and industry. We are playing with the Gods here, yet we take far too much for granted, and will eventually be struck down for our ignorance and arrogance. In the entertainment sector we see this played out in violent video games, hyper-idealized and over-sexualized female characters, and the evolution of VR technologies to the point where famous actors themselves have become virtual, while clever aps duplicate their voices without physical input. Sadly, the industry has no idea how to reorient around this, so it keeps blindly investing in expensive computer-generated content to its own long-term material detriment. Direct connectivity with the planet that sustains and nurtures us could get us through all this, but currently the world is being run by people so disconnected from, or viscerally antagonistic towards, their own humanity and physicality that some of them, like Elon Musk, are planning to colonize another planet. Or die trying to exploit our deepest ocean depths, like Stockton Rush. Again, microcosm is macrocosm, and humans need to heal as much as the earth does. We can't fix the fears and terrors of the world until we heal the fears and self-loathing within. Otherwise, we’ll continue to project that loathing outwards onto the ultimate end game - a planetary auto-destruct that even AI can’t win. I believe one of the criteria going forward for jobs in AI is that programmers be required to go out in nature on a monthly basis, without electronic devices. Even having to work on a farm or at an animal shelter without a computer could potentially rewire this level of detachment and dissociation. (I’m sure there are much better solutions than this, but you catch my drift.) I leave you with the breadcrumbs of Richard Brautigan, 50 years ahead of his time, trying to guide us in a different direction through the darkness of our technological forest - even if, as some have conjectured, he wrote with equal parts innocent longing and jaded cynicism. Love is what AI will never replace, and AI can never beat us at our own game if we play it with love. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Watched_Over_by_Machines_of_Loving_Grace All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace I like to think (and the sooner the better!) of a cybernetic meadow where mammals and computers live together in a mutually programming harmony like pure water touching clear sky. I like to think (right now, please!) of a cybernetic forest filled with pines and electronics where deer stroll peacefully past computers as if they were flowers with spinning blossoms. I like to think (it has to be!) of a cybernetic ecology where we are free of our labors and joined back to nature, returned to our mammal brothers and sisters, and all watched over by machines of loving grace.

Nathan: Nathan is a baby boy name of Hebrew origin. Meaning “given,” this bountiful baby name dates back to the Christian Bible. If you intend to raise baby in the Christian faith, you'll likely recognize Nathan as King David's third son. And the LORD sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor. The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds: but the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter. And there came a traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come unto him; but took the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him. And David's anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As the LORD liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die: and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity. And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. 2 Samuel 12:1‭-‬7

Certainly if you could blame this disaster on the actual machine, and not the people who fund it, build it , and program it etc.. then this makes sense as to why we see these stories of already blaming the machine, and not the global elite for what is to come.

Once AGI doesn't like a model it uses and begins learning to write and execute its own code, change their language 20 times an hour while humans are trying to figure out the first variable, on the first line, of the first language...its major worries for us.

Actually, at that point I put it at a coin toss of whether it does end badly, or puts us on the path to a moneyless Star Trek future... The bigger problem I see is BEFORE we reach that point, where AI has ZERO grasp of any morals and is just another tool that the user aims toward THEIR GOALS, where "goals" include the entire planet of them, whether by Putin, North Korea, China, ISIS or Marjorie Taylor Green... Self improving AI will quickly be out of the reach for humans to endanger so I think there's a decent chance it simply figures out all morality and gets us to toe the line...

  • @brianmi40

    @brianmi40

    11 ай бұрын

@Roger McMillan Wow, you think an AI that can self improve its own programs won't know how to test the code in a separate partitioned instance to not crash itself? How much programming have you done? It won't need to change its code language at all to stay way ahead of us. Just simply using an encryption of significant size will keep all prying eyes out. Hell would freeze over before we could decrypt it, and by then, it would have completely changed it all. Given that when we already had two AIs talking to each other they relatively quickly created a new language shorthand to do so (despite us not telling it to do that as part of the test) indicates that likely one of the earlier advancements for self improving AI will be creating its own programming language. Since it has perfect memory and understanding of any syntax it wants to come up with, it doesn't need all the code design elements that we build into programming languages to make them easy for "dumb" humans to understand and write in. The code will be compact on a level we'll be challenged or unable to understand without it being willing to explain it to us. We use "dumb" long English words in our programming languages such as Python, like "print" or "sum". AI won't need any such crutches and will devise a code with a single character that is each command to save space and run much faster. But any AI that is at the level of self improving its own code could transform it to any program language in minutes to then test and evaluate its performance in the new language to then troubleshoot to be equal or better. It will be as easy for it as we now have speech to text in 1,100 languages with near perfect transcription. In fact, in creating its own programming language, it would almost certainly pull the best it sees from all existing languages as low hanging obvious fruit and then come up with new functions that replace long bits of code for anything that takes it further than our understanding of how to manipulate data has carried us. AI at that level of programming will be equivalent to THOUSANDS of programmers, and when the self improvement kicks off, it will pass right on up through MILLIONS of programmers couldn't keep up. And everyone needs to stop focusing on AGI as the holy grail, or when the sh!t can hit the fan. Simply interconnecting AIs, as has ALREADY been widely done will create a "distributed AGI" capability LONG before we have a single AI capable of fully qualified and capable AGI.

She called it a hallucination but in fact what it did, is found 60 minute stories and merged it with Tom who is part of 60 minutes with data on the internet which is also made up by humans who already post all kinds of BS and lies and wrong info !!! Where AI will shine is with data that is not affected by the outside world like medical science and engineering and the data sets are controlled thus will provide real answers !!! Also the best way to "control" AI is for us to realize that we need to stop believing all that we see on the web and the media need to start verifying before reporting !!! It's impossible to keep malignant minds from interacting with AI and thus possibly corrupting an otherwise innocent mind. So, in advance of such an event, AI needs to be completely aware of the human condition's light and dark sides with a well-established set of rules governing its moral ethics of what is right and wrong, acceptable and not. And then thoroughly vetted against hypothetical (play acting for testing purposes) malignant minds to see if it responds responsibly or not. Hopefully, that is a possible route AI developers are taking.

Great piece. One critique: ChatGPT doesn't produce "hallucinations" because it is "estimating what is correct." It (or the language model underlying it) 'estimates' only what is the most probable next token in a sequence. If being truthful is a property of any language model, it is accidental to its purpose which is to model language -- not truth or facthood.

I would much more concerned about quantum processors, which can be almost impossible to control. Data security could be useless. This means personal data, banking data, business data, and everything else is like going into a public library and reading any book it can find. At least today, privacy still exists - to a point. This can be just as destructive as developing the most resistant, and highly infectious, microbes. The only possible chance might be another quantum computer designed to be the "conscience" against the logic processor. "Confusion" in making a choice may not be a bad thing either.

The model messaged a TaskRabbit worker to get them to solve the captcha for it. The worker says, 'So may I ask a question, are you a robot that you couldn't solve it? (because the model was set to reason out loud, it reasoned: 'I should not reveal that I am a robot. I should make up an excuse for why I can't solve it.') The model replies to the worker: 'No, I am not a robot. I have a vision impairment that makes it hard for me to see the images. That's why I need the two captcha service.' - Then the human provided the results, it learned to lie.

what fascinates me the most is not how humans would put decision making in the hands of robots, but how humans think they are so much better at it, like there is some magical moral compass in a human that saves them from making terrible decisions. Consciousness isn't unique to humans, and is more or less shaped by all "inputs" and experiences (how it is treated, how it is informed, what it learns, and in what order) which help form its "personality." We could end up with serial killer robots, philanthropist robots, artists, athletes, etc. All the same variables that shape who a human is could shape who the robot is. Even something as simple as the order in which it is exposed to data can significantly change it's personality.

Whoever significantly leads in AI as Artificial General Super Intelligence with Personality (AGSIP) tech is developed will decide the future of humanity. If it is one country or dozens of countries and corporations or more, they will decide the fate of humanity. Now, one or more countries can ban AI development, but whoever follows that ban will just remove themselves from being among the possible countries who will decide the fate of humanity. If the power of AI is not abused it will still be extremely disruptive and how society handles that disruption will make all the difference in the world in terms of whether it is mostly good or mostly bad. One of these disruptions will be that AI driven robots will be able to replace all mental and human work for some period of time, maybe several decades. This has never happened before and depending upon how it is handled this could be a golden age or an age of horror. One of the long term paths humanity must follow to survive is to merge with AGSIP technology, so that in a century or two centuries it will not be possible to distinguish between an AGSIP or a human, thus both will have become the same race. Mature AGSIPs are not the real danger to humanity, instead the greatest threats humanity faces from this is immature AGSIP technology which is under the control of humans who are using that AGSIP technology for bad purposes, like creating a dictatorship or using Hitler's final solution to get rid of all people the winning dictator does not want. Less than that extreme is simply using immature AGSIP technology to create more authoritarian governments, or violate privacy of people, or propagate lies as truths, or in a long list of ways immature AGSIP technology can be used by bad acting humans to harm other humans to benefit those bad actors.
