Is 5 Cents Still An Incentive To Recycle? Some Call For Increase To New York's Bottle Deposit

On the 40th anniversary of the bottle deposit in New York State, there is an effort to double it. It's still just a nickel, which consumers get back if and when they return it for recycling, but some say it's just not working anymore; CBS2's Carolyn Gusoff reports.

How about don't charge the bottle fee in the first place?

@First Last you democrats do a great job littering the streets and destroying your cities without even considering bottles

I wanna agree but this is the only option to kind of make people clean up the bottles/cans around communities since the original owner of the item can’t seem to keep the world clean them selves.

Why not raise the bottle and can deposit bonus to a dollar? Recycling a bottle or can for $1.00 each can help you earn some of your money back you've spent just to help pay off a lot of bills if you're trying to get yourself out of debt. This needs to happen not just in New York alone, but in every U.S. state across the country. Pass this on to Biden and Hochul, this can really be a game changer for lower and middle class citizens. #Recyclefor$1

Or you nuts if it was a $1.00 a bottle for each return you'd have people fighting over bottles in the streets..😂

The deposit should be one dollar, and adjusted for inflation every year or two, For the consumers who complain about the cost: return your containers and there is no cost to you. We need to begin showing respect to the Earth.

Make it 5 bucks a can and you won’t see another can at the dump. New Yorkers can handle it, they got money.

I know that one of the recycling centers there gets the 5 cents back every time they get the containers picked up, but they also get 35 cents per container for sorting fee, so no 5 cents per container is not enough.

It is time to double the bottle bill and expand the law it's only way you can keep the city of New York clean. Might as well get with the times. If the returns rates are going down it's gonna be kind of worthless bill to have. Hell Connecticut has already expanded theirs as of this year and next year they are going up to 10 cents. I live in Mass. and I turn in bottles and cans by the truck loads and find all kinds of things we have no deposit on around here. Might as well make something good out of nothing. Why waste it.

It doesnot cost more. If you are lazy, yes. But if you bring them back it doesnt cost anything to the consumer. Take a Look at European countries, in Germany for example they have a 97% return rate, because the deposit is 25c. You also collect already really good sorted resources, which can be recycled better and easyer. From what i have heard in the US recycleables arn‘t even sorted by material, which sounds nuts to me. Ultimatley that results in a good amount of the not sortable part of the rycycling bin to get burned or even worse landfilled. In terms of recycling the American system is compareable to a 3rd world country.

There WILL NEVER BE AN INCENTIVE TO RECYCLE.....THIS IS BECAUSE ALL THE STORES TAKE THE 5 CENTS AFTER YOU PURCHASE YOUR DRINKS....KEEP IT AT 5 CENTS BUT THE STORES STOP TAKING 5 CENTS PER BOTTLE... MAKE THE CONSUMER FEEL THEY GET REWARDED FOR RETURNING A BOTTLE

During my time in New York, there were some milk container bottles with a dollar, up to two dollars, for refund that can only be returned at a grocery store's customer service area, not by the machines itself. Other than that, increase the refund amount to at least 10 cents. If someone don't want to return it, give it to someone who does.

I see a lot of elderly people collecting bottles, & it is really sad. & the fact that it's been 5 cents since the 80's & has never gone up is disheartening. literally men & women in their 70s going around dangerous garbage for $1-2 an hour. 😢
