Is 2024 THE END for Car Meets As We Know Them?

This month's Reading Japanese Meet was an eerie one. The turnout was different to the norm, whether that be Japanese cars, impostors or police. I caught a few of the greatest arrivals and departures to and from the event, including that of an insane Time Attack Subaru that the police seemed to take a fondness to..

I'm from the Max Power era where people were doing up smaller hot hatches or engine swaps etc. The thing that always ruined them was the small number of people who turned up and started driving like idiots, drawing unwanted attention from the locals who would call the police. The overwhelming numbers of bought not built cars with big power out of the box and the ridiculous pops and bangs map people get, plus this culture of people showing off while leaving, which is the cause of people gathering all over the roads just put me right off The heavy police presence of meets is a function of the constant dangerous behaviour of some of the people in attendance. This is compounded by the fact that everyone has a camera and insists on filming everything and posting it on social media. I miss the old car scene where it was just a bunch of like-minded people who wanted to park up in a car park and check out each other's cars, chat about them and eat fast food. Most of the people there even took a dim view of the meets being ruined by the minority who arrived to race, do burnouts, rev their engines and flame their exhausts etc. We didn't want the police moving us on.

I think your right there ,there’s too much available that you can buy new with big power on finance deals etc therefore can be bought by anyone whereas years ago if something was built and heavily modified the chances are the guy who’s car it is can drive

My local car club is very old school, a few modified classics but mainly yank stuff and the majority of us with grey hair. We all behave and just chat and drink coffee (usually meet at the drive-thru Starbucks on the edge of town).

Welcome to modern government. Someone is killing & stealing, arrest the victim if they resist and do nothing otherwise. Someone is having fun, arrest them and ruin their life. That kind of mentality is why I get kind of angry when I hear a British accent or see a UK/AUS sticker on a car here in the US.

Same, when 3 young underaged drunk school kids jumped me after getting off the bus. Cops didn't care, didn't do anything, and told me I should have beat them up as a lesson. I even knew where they went to school, and they could easily have got the camera footage from the bus company. (I didn't because they were underage, and I would have been the one to get in trouble if I did). I wasn't badly hurt at all, stayed on my feet, whilst they had a girl trying to hold them back LMAO. Was ridiculous. This is that happens when you move council estate people from a bad area into a nice one. Welcome to Plymouth and the moronic city council.

I was born and raised in mainland Europe, been living in the UK for about 10 years now. We didn't have this culture growing up in Scandinavia. What the UK has is epic when it comes to car and bike culture. But this sort of behaviour, and pops and bangs tunes are really forcing the public to take action (understandably so). Keep it respectful and continue this fantastic culture the UK has!

As these meets become more & more like the street takeovers (read criminal activity) you see in the US, the more I am actually for the police presence. Sad, I know, but it's only a few high-profile incidents involving pops & bangs Fiesta's away from ruining enthusiast car ownership for the rest of us.

  • @LePedant

It's not criminal for us. We have the right to gather, and poorly defined "anti-social" laws were deemed illegal. Cops can only give a dispersal order, if a riot is declared. Anti-social laws were deemed too vague and went against our freedom of expression. Disorderly conduct is the closest thing to antisocial laws we have, but you have to be a real jerk to be charged. While on private property, like parking lots, we can do all the burnouts, and be as loud as we want. We just have to be like 500ft away from residential buildings, and stop by 10pm. Only the owner of the property can force us to leave.

Proper cars will become even more expensive to both insure and buy fuel for in the very near future. Government mandates on net zero will force the matter sooner rather than later. Treasure these days where its still relatively affordable to go out and enjoy your ride, as the days where most will have to save up to use it are just around the corner.

the UK police seem to be more friendly. Here in New Zealand, the police wouldn't film or take photos, they would just block all entrances to prevent people from leaving and check all car modifications which half these cars in the video would likely be taken off the road for being illegally modified.

Everybody likes a good send, but they ultimately lead to high police presence and shut-downs of some great meets. The many are always punished for the action of the few. I personally hope the culture continues, especially when we need community nowadays with so much hate. Reign it in a touch, do not give 5-0 reason to be suspicious, and there is no reason for interention!

Ive mellowed alot as ive got older I'm in my 40's now but I still enjoy a good departure send. People who complain about noisy cars have nothing better to do with their time. As for the police they are just looking for revenue, bunch of tax collectors these days.

You have to look at the objective facts. These meets DO result in accidents (3 in one night on one occasion as Adam pointed out) and they are undeniably accidents resulting from people trying to show off. Yes it's the minority but just imagine if the police did nothing and the next accident killed some innocent family who happened to be passing the exit. All of a sudden it would be "there'd been accidents and complaints for years, why didn't anyone do anything!". Well here they are, trying to do something. I love our car culture in the UK, but this is the worst side of it. As Adam said at the end, a meet should be exactly that, a MEET. Chat to people, look at their cars, talk about mods, have a coffee and a laugh. All the obnoxious revving just feels like insecure kids trying to get attention and, ironically, makes it hard to actually have a conversation. The police are treading a difficult line. I feel like they went in hard last year to make a statement, particularly about this meet which is especially problematic. Hopefully it will be enough to deter idiots and meets like this can go back to being about enthusiasts just meeting up and hanging out.

It could get crazy back in the day but its not bad at all now. They will be preventing accidents when people launch their cars leaving though. A lot of the police probably like the cars tbf.

I think it's fine, it stops people driving like bellends on the public road. Car meets are for car nerds to check out each others cars, not to see who can do the biggest burnout or poorly-controlled drift.

my experience is the exact opposite. public meets with police presence tend to have high quality cars attending them, while "underground" meets, as cool as the idea sounds, are just a bunch of stock-ish cars doing reckless burnouts while teenagers in skinny jeans film them.

Car/bike meets have always been the same, look at the history of the ACE CAFE. My Dad was what they called a Ton Up boy, they would meet at the Ace Cafe then race round the North Circular(a406). Me i started with a '56 chevy Belair, smoking out the Kings road in the late 70's early 80's. then capri's, cosworths, Skylines, supra's, various Evo's etc. I'm now in my mid 60's, still going to meets/shows (rarely car park meets) with my mustang v8 or my MX5 turbo (360bhp) . Still doing burn outs etc when i leave. Just keep it out of the Babylons face, they will get fed up and give up attending. In every decade there's been crack downs, They then give up if they aint getting convictions. Trouble now is all the people filming and splashing it over social media etc.

Not seen any bother at all, i suspect the Caffeine and Machine is exactly the same which is how it should be! These car park meets atract the wrong attention these days I go nowhere near them.

Car culture died when financed reliable cars were introduced with decent enough power, looks, etc. Now, there are massive amounts of people on the roads at all times now. Unlike in the 90s to early 2000s after seven or eight pm, the roads were dead! Many did all the crazy shit you see today. Just fewer people were around to witness it (or film with phones). Fuel was super cheap, so much so you could burn a tank a night and not see the bank balance break sweat. Loved the glory days in the UK. I would suggest looking at other countries if you still have the passion for how things used to be.
