    based on some basic research all engine oils have an SAE number (Society of automobile engineers). Now, viscosity is measured in a unit where higher number means more viscous oil(more thicker), Lower viscosity value means(lower number) means thinner oil at a particular temperature. There are two number x and y in the format xW-y. The x means the viscosity value when engine is cold. It is supposed to be lower value since oil needs to be thinner when engine is cold, so that it can reach the engine head. Now the value Y is the viscosity of oil measured at 100 degree C. Please note thats its not the temperature itself what Y is signifying. Rather the viscosity value at 100 degrees. This is the operating temperature of most engines running normally. Now the oil has to be thicker to maintain its consistency so the value is higher. E.g 0w-20 means the oil is very less viscous at cold temp, and viscosity value is 20(more thick) when temp is 100. Similarly 5w-40 would mean, oil thickness is less(5) when engine is cold, and its viscosity is 40 when engine temp is 100. So this oil is more thicker at 100 degrees than 5w-20.

    "So this oil is thicker than 5W40 at 100 degree" No. Higher the number, higher the viscosity, it is directly proportional. Which is exactly what you have written in your comment however your end conclusion is the opposite.

    Brother let me tell u its pretty clear ..the market scenario is hiped with buying more new cars rather than maintenance of cars for longer period. Aab yeh trend govt bhi support karta aur Autosector k to wah wah. The only thing to do is drive cautiously till warranty period after that save ur car by giving the necessary graded oil & fluid. Thanks again Paaji for the video with truth and man to man conversation ❤. God bless you all.

    Adding to the pinned comment, 0W oils are used because normal public does not warm their engines before driving. They just crank the starter and start driving. This is the basic reason for using 0W oils. Us enthusiast are the only ones who follow the engine warm up, turbo cool down procedures. 95% of car buyers are not enthusiast, hence companies are switching to 0W oils. Such a basic thing Manish ji missed, you are enthusiast doesn't mean everyone is. And regarding VW oil burning, there are many articles on oil burning issue with VW engines. Use any oil, both TDI and TSI engines consume oil. That is not a bad thing.

    A very good topic to discuss about, have been researching quite a lot on this. VW themselves are confused, dealerships are putting 5W-40 in 1.0 TSI Polo (DSH0) while the Virtus and Taigun 1.0 (DTB)have a sticker under the bonnet stating 0W-20. I’ve personally noticed drop in fuel efficiency after the first oil change in my Polo hinting that it was filled with 0W-20 from factory.

    Recommended oil type is mentioned in user manual - stick to that type as OEM knows better than anyone else. My Rapid petrol uses 5W40 and has worked well for past 10 yrs. Recently I tried 0W30/20 which is a thinner oil ( expensive than 5W40 ) and result is that the mileage has marginally improved and engine is bit silent. Thinners oils do this. Flip side is that if i rev too hard, i can smell some oil burn - this may be because of thinner oil. Hence i am shifting back to original skoda recommended 5W40 ( many oil cos make this oil e.g. Shell Helix, Castrol Magnatec, Mobil etc )

    I own a Honda City 2012 model. Previously Honda service centre use to fill 0w30 oil. Around 5 years back they started filling 0w20. Since I work in Petroleum Oil Refinery, I understand oil grades & its effect especially for hot conditions prevailing in northern & western India. Upon questioning service centre, they replied since it’s a fully synthetic oil grade, 0w20 will also work and will improve car’s mileage. But I was not satisfied with their answer and I checked with my car service manual wherein list of recommended engine oil are 0w30, 0w40, 5w30, 5w40. Further I states 0w30 SM grade will give best fuel economy. Since my Honda city I-vtec engine is naturally aspirated engine so switched back to 0w30 fully synthetic SN Shell Helix Ultra engine oil. Further Honda service centre doesn’t allow to use other brands engine oil so I have stopped going to Honda Service Centre, instead get my car serviced at reputed third party service centre while using 0w30 oil.

Don't know which one is better, but since last 4 years, I have been using VW 507 00 approved oils due to its highly demanding requirements. VW tests 507 00 oils in atleast 18 different engines for a significantly higher duration than VW 505.01 oils Also gear oil viscosity rating and engine oil viscosity rating are completely different. A 75w80 gear oil will be almost equivalent to a 5w30 engine oil with respect to viscosity.

    There can be only two reasons behind this trend followed by most OEMs: 1) First, the quality and type of the oil pump being used in the sump might be incapable of pumping high viscosity oil at required pressure into the engine. The lubrication lines in the engine might also not support oil of a thicker viscosity and may even get clogged leading to premature engine failure. The oil pressure sensor would show a low oil pressure signal along with that dreadful red low oil level warning indication on the dash. 2) Secondly, it may be a deliberate attempt at reducing the cost of consumables for the customer which works in two ways. Firstly, it improves the margins for dealer service network and secondly, it also brings down the cost of servicing for the vehicle owners thereby creating a public image of the brand being easy on the pocket when it comes to the cost of servicing a vehicle at an authorised service centre. To sum it up, its advisable to stick to the OEM recommended grade of oil, at least till the vehicle is under warranty. In case one is deciding to change the grade of oil, ensure to get the old oil flushed out completely, sump cleaned up, and the oil filter replaced before a different grade is refilled.

    Newer engines, especially those designed with tighter tolerances like those of VW and requiring better fuel efficiency, often benefit from 0W-20. • Older Engines: Engines with more wear might perform better with 5W-30, which offers better protection at higher operating temperatures. 5. Fuel Efficiency: 0W-20 can slightly improve fuel economy because of its lower viscosity at operating temperature, reducing engine drag. 6. Driving Conditions: • Normal Driving: For typical daily driving, either oil might work fine if it aligns with your manufacturer’s recommendations.

    India has lack of knowledge because our education system is based on memorizing and scoring high marks in examination. Every brand and big institutions take advantage of us and scam us is most possible way. I am an Engineer and I know what all these mean. That is why I service my own vehicle, I have trust in me that my engine can't go wrong with the type of care I take. I don't care about brand warranty unless there is any manufacturing defect. I take things in my own hands and stay happier and service better than authorized service center. Also, for the people who are non-technical you guys can trust your technical friends more than those brands and their so called warranty. Companies do dirty business, nothing else

    Advantages for brands / dealerships for promoting low viscosity engine oil as standard of late.... 1. Three to four percent increase in fuel efficiency to give temporary psuedo satisfaction to customer 2. Easy low temperature / early morning lubrication is ensured specially for those who crack the engine and immediately move the vehicle due to easy flow in engine. This ensures lesser engine/ turbo related compliants specially in early ownership period or say warranty period 3. Chance to get more money from customer for costly fancy grade oil instead of basic mineral oil 4. Thinner oil leads to relatively early engine overhauls ( around 1.5 lacs ) leading to gone piston rings and blowby problems. This again gives dealerships one more chance to make money for engine buildbup out side warranty. ਪੰਜੇ ਉਂਗਲੀਆ ਦੇਸੀ ਘਿਓ ਚ 😂 15wd40 is still best grade for diesels. And 5w40 is still best for gasoline engine considering Indian conditions

    One key take away from your statement is that if the engine oil is not suitable for that particular engine, the engine will start consuming more engine oil and will not last the annual service interval of 15,000 km. I have not faced any such issue with VW 2.0 cars till date. Another point is that the current manufacturing and servicing is only taking into consideration that the life of the engine should be about 15 years because of the NGT ruling for petrol vehicles and 10 years for diesel vehicles. This was earlier restricted to Delhi NCR areas but now is being gradually rolled out on pan India basis. Also, along with fuel efficiency, the manufacturers are also required to comply with the latest pollution emission norms and perhaps this change in type of engine oil great has to do something with that as well. Also, at the end of the day, the Indian customers have been making huge huge cry about the servicing cost being higher and this is One way for the manufacturers to bring down the cost.

    @@JainArpit If I had to make a guess, I would say it's probably due to strict and stringent emission norms. Thinner engine oils can increase efficiency marginally, allowing the oil pump to work more easily at lower temperatures, even during cold starts. While I'm not completely sure about the specifics of BSVI Phase 2 emission norms, I do know that Euro 7 and the upcoming BS7 standards will require compliance with cold-start emissions. Although the corporate world can be quite greedy, and one might suspect that car manufacturers are conspiring to execute planned obsolescence, as hinted by Munish and @Sunderdeep Singh, I don't think that's the case-at least not with engine oils. Especially after the Dieselgate scandal, the VW Group has taken a defensive approach to comply with emission norms. There's no way they can afford to ruin their brand reputation again by pulling a trick like this. They had to shut down their diesel engines globally after the fiasco, so they understand the consequences of malpractice. I do not think the VW Group is conspiring.

    @@sufiyanadam my thoughts exactly as stated in my original message. To add to what you’re saying, these KZreadrs are not indicating that this is only the VAG group which is doing this. They are stating this to be the case across the manufacturers in India and perhaps even abroad.

  • @sufiyanadam

    @sufiyanadam

    @@JainArpit Yes, I agree. There is a global shift to 0W20, most probably for regulatory compliance. While the choice of engine oil might seem counterintuitive for tropical climates at first glance, modern synthetic oils like 0W20 are designed to perform well across a range of conditions. These oils are designed with advanced viscosity index improvers, ensuring the oil stays thin enough to flow at low temperatures while maintaining the right thickness at high temperatures. As far as I am aware, they add additives like zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) which offer strong anti-wear protection, keeping critical engine parts safe from friction and wear, even when the oil is on the thinner side. They're formulated with high-quality base oils that enhance their thermal stability, meaning they're less likely to break down or lose viscosity at high temperatures compared to older formulations. @SunderdeepSingh

    Please do not dish out your opinion based on some blogs / articles you read online. Every manufacturer invests into research when suggesting oil grades / specifications. Manufacturer always mentions multiple viscosity for a particular engine. It is the approval / specifications that are fixed with multiple viscosity covered. Eg: VW 502 can be met with 0/5 W 30/40. Newer TSI engines where VW 508/509 is specified must use the newer generation oil 0/5 W 20. To compensate for the lower viscosity, the additive package is added always as per the manufacturer. You can shuffle between the viscosity allowed by the manufacturer but neglecting the recommendation is not the right way for your engine. Also the racing car example given by you makes sense as they do this in short sprints. Those cars are not daily drivers. Look at this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/e3-YysmEhb3OgKQ.html&pp=ygUhbG93ciB2aXNjc290dSBvaWwgZGFtYW5hZ2UgZW5naW5l
