I fucking love Bruce Dickinson, he's probably my top 1. BUT! Paul Di'Anno's contributions to Iron Maiden cannot be overstated. The guy is an absolute powerhouse of a singer. Ive no doubt that Di'Anno's vocal skills are on par with Bruce's, even if I prefer Bruce. I'll just say this; If I had to pick just one Iron Maiden album to own on Vinyl, it would definitely be a Paul Di'Anno album.

@@Rowlph8888 True. I like Paul's voice itself a little more tbh. Dude sounds like a wild animal blowing out the speakers, its awesome. The thing with Bruce however, is that he's pretty much mastered the art of singing. If you watch videos of his one man show explaining how he sings specific songs, its like taking a singing lesson from a master. Hes very disciplined, same with his fencing. I think his singing is not so much about his voice, as much as his overall personality. Same with Paul. Its like Lou Reed and Pavarotti. They couldn't be more different, but both can reach the same heights singing the same material.

He's written some very good stuff in and out of Maiden, he's got a good voice and overall he seems like a great guy. Yeah, he's not as versatile as Bruce Dickinson, or as iconic as Paul DiAnno, but he's still a fine heavy metal singer. His solo stuff is where it's at. There's a live video of his band playing Run to the Hills on KZread. Its a bootleg and the sound quality is shit, but his voice is clear enough. Its down tuned to fit his range and honestly, he freaking nails it. I honestly think that Maiden misused him and he also wasn't ready for that kind of gig at the time.

Met band members at the hall side door & a couple of their autographs on a photo of them (many years later stolen). That was a fantastic concert & more so because of Paul Di'anno.. LONG LIVE IRON MAIDEN. No Skyscraper reaches the Top if its foundations are not extremely powerful and resistant like the greatest weather and vicissitudes of the Ladies of Destiny that neither Zeus nor Odin controls. Congratulations "Paul Di'anno" for his 63 years. Its name that marks the beginning of Iron Maiden's triumphal trajectory and that as soon as it was put on the Rock and Roll Map Really Kickin 'All The Asses changed the Scene and Direction in 180 Degrees of the Heavy Metal World and the reluctance of many that is recorded on the band's first album with the most prophetic "Song" of all of the Iron Maiden that just and simply and nothing coincidentally is called "Iron Maiden". I don't need to say anything other than to show my Gratitude for you to exist and lose even on Via Tortuosa and out of the spotlight. When the name Paul Di'anno was recruited in the right person, at the right time with the posture of a true Rocker n Roller to convince that there was something more powerful than Punk Rock and that Heavy Metal in the NWOBHM version achieved with FRONTMAN as a Kamikaze hitting the soul of those who were alive as an eyewitness to remember who hitchhiked when it became fashionable to be an Iron Maiden fan about the fact that you were indeed adored by the first Iron Maiden Root Fans! Your voice will echo forever with this song and with one of the most famous Logos in the history of Rock and Roll: IRON MAIDEN PS: without any apology for drugs it is known by all that they can destroy the life of an ordinary person as much as Rockstars and that of any Artist who is, after all not everyone has the physical stamina and luck for example Rockstars like Jimmy Page to Tommy Lee, but without a doubt, that without drugs, no one would have opened as Doors of Perception and there would be neither Rock and Roll nor his Son called Heavy Metal. LONG LIVE IRON MAIDEN.

I was at this gig, this was the first time I saw Adrian Smith after Dennis Stratton left the band, Steve and Dave were in beast mode because of Adrian struggling to keep up with them, since then Adrian has gone from strength to strength after this gig, this was in December 1980, I remember the mad Eddie Christmas badges being thrown at us from the guys wearing the mad eddies from sacks. I never saw maiden live again because when they done a tour of the killers Album I thought I could live with paying to watch Adrian in place of Dennis but, I weren’t prepared to pay and watch Bruce for Paul. This is brilliaant Paul.Only criticism I would have is that Steve should have had Adrian starting the riff, to this song, because it was suppose to be slightly slower, to really make the crowd become immersed in the riffs and melody. Dave simply started playing too fast, and forced the rest of the band to go along with that. That was the primary reason why Adrian left in the end, because they are not a thrash band and the music is written for a heavy-metal tempo

Iron Maiden became to theatrical when they added Bruce Dickerson, he's a great singer but I like the edgier style with Paul in the band. I think Iron Maiden got to caught up in the times where singers where wanting to be more clearer in their vocals with longer note holding, hence the rise and fall of the hair bands. Maiden really missed the bus not keeping Paul as vocals.

I'll never forget seeing them 3 times between June 1980 & February 1981, absolutely fantastic. Energy from the band & the crowd was off the scale, every minute of every show.

@@stevenwilkinson1265 I don't envy you - no not at all ;-) (I missed that golden line up (pre-Bruce) My wife saw them as a warm up band to Kiss 1980 in Stockholm. I saw them first time 83, piece of mind tour. Which was great of course, but miss not having seen Wrathchild sung by Dianno...

About a year or two before this they couldn't afford to pay for their own demo tape, must have been an out of body experience being on the national stage.

This era of Iron Maiden is my favorite. Bruce D. is a great singer but I'll always prefer their speedier n and a lil bit punkier stuff

My thoughts are the following… Paul was great but I think Iron Maiden hit a peak with him apart from him developing a serious coke problem. I think if Bruce hadn’t come in the band would have stalled. Bruce took them to the next level. The Number of the Beast album is a testament to that.
