I bought Power slave when it was released. I can not hear it for years, yet I know every lyric, every guitar riff, every bass chug, every drum fill, every meter change - just a masterpiece. I was 14 when this came out and was a total Maiden fan. Near 4 decades later and still a Maiden fan - literally for life. Up the Irons! 🤘

The first I ever heard of this song was in the 1986 horror film 'Creepers', believe it or not. I was 11 and already a huge horror movie enthusiast by that time. You only hear some of the beginning riff section, but it's played a couple of times through out the film. I loved it instantly and was able to learn the song's title during the credits. 'Creepers' didn't especially endear itself into my psyche, however Iron Maiden's Flash Of The Blade did. It's an often overlooked gem, and I'm glad to see you reacting to it. Keep rockin', stay heavy, and up the Irons 🤘

The song that you've heard with a similar riff is probably A7X's Not Ready to Die, tbh. The influence was there, anyway. 😅 This song was written by Bruce Dickinson. It's about dueling; being a kid and fantasizing about a lot of the things young people grow up to fantasize about with great adventures. They want to be awesome duelists, and battle dragons and giants, then they finally take up the sword for themselves as they realize becoming such a master is possible, even if great mythical beasts aren't real. When touring with Iron Maiden became taxing and the band members needed a break, Bruce took up fencing as a hobby, then joined England's Olympic fencing team and became a fencing instructor so that he could do things he loved without being worn down by them. This song is considered obscure by Iron Maiden fans and doesn't come up in a lot of discussions. Powerslave is one of their top albums, but this song and The Duellists are very underrated tracks. Aces High, 2 Minutes to Midnight, and Rime of the Ancient Mariner get most of the glory, as you can imagine.

Flash of the blade is mostly shadowed by a lot of other fantastic song in their huge cathalogue, even if you look only at only the Powerslave album, wich is fantastic all through. But it's definitly ab awsome song and I'm som glad over this reaction that stick out of the reason at choosing this song.

@@satanihelvetet I love it for the mythological deliveries. A lot of people mention Iron Maiden and think of the power metal bands that they've influenced, but Maiden themselves have seemingly few folkloric songs in their entire discography, leaning more toward modern literature and ancient history. This song is one of those really uplifting ones featuring legendary figures and events, in the vein of Dio or Jethro Tull without being overdramatic. It's beautiful, I feel!!! 😃😄

Talking about melodies and Iron Maiden, they do a song called The Talisman and about a minute in the melody does my head in because I know 100% I have heard it somewhere else and have no idea where from.

It was called Creepers in most places, but Phenomena in Italy before that, and it came out in 1985. Great film, but a lot of scenes were cut. An awesome Italian band named Goblin composed several parts of the score, and if you've ever seen the original Phenomena without all of the international cuts, Locomotive by Motörhead was also in it. Jennifer Connelly and Donald Pleasance were two of the stars, if you haven't seen it in awhile. I'm probably the only person born in the '90s who knows it exists. Thank you, Iron Maiden!!! 😅

What I love about this song is that it suits Iron Maiden's reputation in a way that a lot of songs don't. The stereotype of heavy metal bands like Iron Maiden, and other bands later influenced by them who became known under the genre of Power Metal, is that they write songs about dragons and sword fighting like Dio a lot of the time. This is actually the only Iron Maiden classic to mention dragons, and I think that's fascinating. David is obviously the Biblical king who killed the giant Goliath with a slingshot. The iron mask is an integral part of fencing gear, so the duelists don't poke their eyes out or have their faces scarred. It's a whimsical little song. I love that!!! 😄❤

St George of England and St David of Wales, according to myth, both took on dragons 👍

@@alancraig782 St. David's a different case though, in that he didn't slay the dragon. As a bishop, he wasn't permitted to murder. On that note, it can probably be assumed that King David of Israel is the one in the song, even with a similar parallel.

Know what you mean about the melody, frustrating when the answer is close enough to kiss, but elusive in name. One thing about this, like quite a few Maiden songs, that I'm not in love with, is they way the bass is written in as such high notes. Look at that, I found something the whinge about. The rest of the song it great. (bracing myself for the endless piles of hate mail....LOL) Dear old Brucey boy did w convincing cover of Ozzy's Bark at the Moon. Seems as though he sang over the original sound recording with Randy Rhodes on guitar.
