I’m still learning. It seems to me that premium selling leading up to earnings will put a headwind on this trade ie. Increasing option pricing leading up to earnings. Not only that but entering the trade at very low vol. Not so sure about this one. If anything a straddle makes sense, comments?

We would never sell a straddle (selling the greatest amount of premium) When IVR is low (under 50)

It’s precisely at times like these that investors need to be on guard against the next certainty. You don’t have to act on every forecast. I will also suggest investors to get yourselves a financial-advisor that can provide you with entry and exit points on the shares/ETF you focus on.

MRV goes ex-dividend this Friday.. Can you explain why they say exercise a call in these cases?

Ex means without. Owners of stock get the dividend. Only deep in the money calls will be at exercise risk to become stock. These spreads are all out of the money. Zero risk.

Interesting that you want high volatilities in order to sell rich premium. But you want avoid earnings. Aren't implied volatilities the same? Is there any options strategy that exploit the high volatilities before the earnings? Is there any research done on options premium (over- vs. underpricing) before earnings?

You can buy premium when IV is low, say about a month or so before an earnings announcement, and then sell it right before the earnings announcement when, theoretically, IV should be at its highest.

@@thatpointinlife IV is not the only thing that decides premium. There is also a Greek called theta.

@@LaifuLama, say you have a directional bias to the upside on MRVL. If you buy the ATM call option that expires just after earnings, and the stock price does indeed go up and your call is now ITM, and you sell it right before the earnings announcement when IV is at its highest, you WILL make money, Theta be damned. You will have reaped the benefits of expanding volatility while eliminating the risk of holding it through earnings.

Selling premium, the day of earnings prior to the announcement is typically the play if you like trading earnings. I don't like it then but that's a personal preference. Maybe when the markets /VX is over 20 it will be a different story. Today /VX 13 is some of the lowest ever. Search our site we have many segments on the subject

@@thatpointinlife But theta/time will destroy this play if the stock stays rangebound regardless of IV going higher.
