Irobot Roomba 980 vs Dyson 360 Eye - robot vacuum obstacle course

In this episode of Challenge Wednesdays, we wanted to see which robot vacuum could navigate our obstacle course with the least amount of destruction, cleaning as it went.
We pitted the Irobot Roomba 980 against the Dyson 360 Eye in a course containing a teetering tower of jenga, a tangle of wires and a balancing bird. We also laid out strips of lentils and glitter to see which vac was most effective at cleaning.
The verdict? Overall we feel the Dyson 360 Eye won the challenge as it managed to carefully navigate the obstacle course with only one fatality - the balancing bird. It did, however, get very confused towards the end of the challenge which meant that it left a small amount of lentils and glitter unvacuumed on the floor.
The Irobot Roomba seemed to be on a path of destruction, bulldozing the jenga and everything else in sight and pushing debris around the room with no regard for tidiness. It did manage to vacuum most of the lentils and glitter, but we feel it lost overall due to its navigational skills.
We hope you enjoy this video. Remember it is in no way related to our official Which? tests - these are conducted in lab conditions and scrutinise each aspect of robot vacuum cleaners to find the most effective all-round models on the market.

*A great vacuum💯 for the price. The suction is awesome **MyBest.Tools** excellent for pet hair. The beater attachment works great on the stairs. Not too heavy and easily maneuvered.🤨*

The Dyson clearly wasn’t as good as Roomba. The Roomba moved the random objects out of the way so it could clean the whole area and sucked up most of the orange stuff where as the Dyson left loads. If you had shoes, toys etc laying about on the floor you’d want the vacuum to push them out the way not go round them!

*I run the m6 daily, and my floors look awesome🌼 **allabout.wiki/Vacuum** I wet mop 2 days and dry sweep the rest of the days. When I first got it, I used the included disposable pads. I didn't like them--the dry pad has no depth so if it picks up a chunk of something, like dry cat food, then it pushes it around or drags it around the floor. The wet pad wasn't very absorbent so left streaks and wheel marks.*

Roomba uses bump sensors in addition to camera sensors. It's meant to bump into things.

yes. this test was not appropriate to the products. the design is to come in contact with objects as part of detection for the Roomba at least. I own a 980... somehow in life I have never left wine glasses, Jenga and other assorted objects on my floor when I am likely to have my Roomba operate.the Part that was close to a realistic general day to day obscuration was the cabling. You also failed to cover tests on object heights or shag or other "difficult" carpets that are realistic to a home.Should you do so you will find that the Dyson is too tall and far more likely to get stuck compared to the Roomba. Do take note that even with your obstructions the Roomba cleared up more of the mess then the Dyson.

As an owner of 24 different robot vacuums, I can agree that this test was very poorly set up. Bumping into an object as a form of navigation in a robot vacuum is not inherently bad. You will find that the Roomba does slow down before bumping into things, and comes with rubber built into the front of the bumper. Bumping into objects allows it to clean closer, and create more accurate mapping. Objects left throughout your home during the cleaning cycle of the Roomba such as furniture or other items, not as easily knocked down as stacked wine glasses or a Jenga Tower. Whether or not the vacuum knocks down stacked items is irrelevant to the navigation simply because you won't have that issue in your home. Also, they failed to test a variety of other factors that are crucial to the robot vacuums function. Having the base angled in a corner of the room is also against the instructions for both of these vacuums, they should be going straight back and forth lines across the rooms and not diagonally. It really frustrates me when Tech reviewing companies try to review robot cleaning appliances simply because they never know what they're talking about, and they never do test the robots properly. These kinds of tests should be left so those who are experienced with what they are talking about so that misinformation it's not being spread around the internet to consumers who may be looking to purchase an item.

Bump sensors to avoid obstacle are annoying and flawed in their own way. I have to hear the vacuum bumping on closed bedroom door early in the morning. Or have the vacuum cleaner push my slippers away when I've put my feet up on the couch or bed. And worst is when it decides to bump sense your own feet while you're standing in the kitchen. My dogs don't like that either. I would like it if I can find a robot vacuum that will allow me freedom from bumping into things.

My Roomba eats everything (cables, credit cards, thread). It also gets stuck a LOT. If you move a chair in a room, it will spend 5-10 minutes banging around trying to get around it. It also gets stuck a lot. I mean a LOT. - It completely ignores the "exclusion area" that we've set up. This means that it gets jammed on the arched feet on the bottom of dressers. (Works fine if you have straight legged furniture, but if there's an arch or angle to the legs, it wedges itself in and stops). It also burrows itself under carpets. - We have oriental rugs on hardwood floors. It sometimes can't get over the edge and just pushes against the carpet until it's gotten itself stuck underneath. - SO frustrating.

Terrible test... The roomba actually cleaned almost everything, whereas the dyson left most of it still on the floor. As other said.. its not often you leave a very light plastic glass tower, a plastic glass filled with glitter, jenga, and a light eagle statue thing on the floor... I think Which got paid by Dyson...

I dont really care who won, but the price people for both units is unbelieveable!! I pay a person in Oz to clean my house for $70.00AUD a month 3 bedroom flat.. around 35ponds.. So 12 x 70 is $840 for a year, or 441.33 Pound.. i think you get the picture.. I am sure my cleaner will do a better job, she cleans my bath and mops after she vacums lol. BTW dont waste your time!

I have purchased over 5 different Dyson vacuums in all of my years ( some of the purchases were as gifts to family and friends ). Now, for first the time; I am having a problem with my current Dyson V8 ABSOLUTE. It now only runs for less 4.25 minutes in MAX ( it is still under warranty; date of purchase 13September2017 ). I keep my vacuums clean. I asked Dyson to just exchange it and if needed I would pay shipping. But, my reply from Dyson was NO. Therefore, I will clearly state this: DO NOT PURCHASE ANY DYSON PRODUCT. OH YEA !
